Porsche has worked up a treat to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the first two Porsche Clubs, the first of which was founded by seven gentlemen in Westphalia, Germany in 1952, and the second started by another six gentlemen a few months later. Those few enthusiasts and two organizations have grown into 181,000 members among 640 Porsche Clubs in 75 countries. In honor of those humble beginnings, Porsche has created the 911 Club Coupe.

Using the Carrera S as a base, the Club Coupe gets the Carrera S Powerkit providing an extra 30 horsepower, taking the total to 430 hp and dropping the 0-to-100-kph sprint to 4.0 seconds. The PASM option drops the car by 20 millimeters over its 20-inch Sport Techno rims, and the Sport Design package adds a new front fascia and a ducktail spoiler out back. The work is then coated in Brewster Green paint with an Espresso interior, and finished with glossy script on the doors.

The only bittersweet note concerning the 911 Club Coupe is that Porsche is making just 13 of them, and the company is keeping one for itself. The remaining 12 will be awarded to those who win the allotment lottery, entered by registering at the microsite. You have until June 16 to get your name down, and if you are among the chosen your name will be engraved on the door sill - but we assume that's after you've paid €142,831, or $175,580, before taxes for the privilege.

Have a look below for the press release and above for the gallery of a car that will be harder to find than Carmen San Diego.
Porsche announces super-exclusive 911 Club Coupe originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 28 May 2012 08:01:00 EST.
Porsche is recalling 1,232 examples of its new 911 Carrera S over potential fuel leaks. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration filing, routing of a coolant line could interfere with the fuel line, causing the latter to to become disconnected. Naturally, a loose fuel line is no small matter, as it could lead to stalling problems or even a fire.

NHTSA says the recall will begin in April, when Porsche notifies owners that they can take their coupes to the dealer to repair the issue free of charge. Follow the jump for the official details.
Continue reading Porsche recalling 2012 911 Carrera S over possible fuel leak

Porsche recalling 2012 911 Carrera S over possible fuel leak originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 26 Mar 2012 11:00:00 EST.
The 2012 Porsche 911 has been soaking up its share of plaudits, now its ready to soak up its share of your bank account. The "longer, lower, wider, 100-pounds lighter, faster" 911 has finally reached dealerships in its two initial guises: 350-horsepower Carrera and 400-horsepower Carrera S.

The entry model will need $82,100 of your hard earned cash, which is a $4,300 premium over the 2011 Carrera MSRP. It takes another $14,300 to affix an S to the rear end. Those prices don't include the $950 destination charge, but you wouldn't let such a tifle stand between you and history anyway, right? You'll find a press release with a few more details after the jump, then we can all turn our attention to the 911 Turbo.
Continue reading 2012 Porsche 911 hits U.S. dealerships

2012 Porsche 911 hits U.S. dealerships originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 08 Feb 2012 09:29:00 EST.
We like the new 2012 Porsche 911 so much that we thought, heck, why not show it to you twice. This time, however, we bring you the more powerful 911 Carrera S from the floor of the Frankfurt Motor Show. It's the more powerful sibling to the standard 911, and a German sports car that we're eager to get some seat time in.

Buried in the tail is a 3.8-liter flat-six engine that produces 400 horsepower, and can be paired with either a PDK or the new seven-speed manual gearbox. A 911 Carrera S equipped with the auto-shifting unit can run from 0-62 miles per hour in just 4.3 seconds. If you opt for the Sport Plus package, that time drops to just 4.1 seconds. Seeing as this is a Porsche, the Sport Plus package is just one of many things you will be opting for.

Regardless, the new 911, while looking similar to all past examples, offers subtle styling cues that reveal it as the latest member of an iconic family. The wheelbase is 100 millimeters longer and the height of the car has been reduced. Both of these factors give the 2012 911 Carrera S a slightly sleeker profile.

Are you in the market for the latest 911? You'll need at least $96,400 to put a Carrera S in your driveway. That's $13,771.43 per gear.
Continue reading 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S is seven shades of awesome [w/video]

2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S is seven shades of awesome [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 20:00:00 EST.
Last we checked, Road Atlanta was a famed professional 2.54-mile racetrack, not an oversized autocross layout on a training skidpad. Somebody may need to remind Mini USA, as the maker of famously small cars has just announced the "track" (their word, not ours) for its overly-publicized "Rumble on the Racetrack" (their title, not ours) challenge pitting the Mini Cooper S against the race-bred Porsche 911 Carrera S.

While Mini promises "No tricks. No gimmicks. No jokes" in its latest Facebook post, the map of the so-called challenge <strike>track</strike> autocross is nothing more than a few hundred cones dropped on the "School Course & Training Area" located in the infield of Road Atlanta by turns 6 and 7 (this is hardly the same asphalt that hosts cars like the Corvette C6.R, Porsche RS Spyder, Ferrari 430GT and Audi R10 TDI at the Petit Le Mans).

With the big shindig scheduled for Monday (with or without an official Porsche showing), this event has gone from entertaining to mildly disappointing. We don't need to explain to any of our readers that a Mini Cooper S is as comfortable on a loop-de-doo autocross course as Porsche is, well... on the winner's podium at Road Atlanta.

Mini has yet to answer the challenge from Hyundai (the Koreans were kind enough to offer to take Porsche's vacant spot on the grid), but they had better get on it. With a <strike>track</strike> autocross this tight, they should be expecting a call from Smart first thing Monday morning.
The 3.6L and 3.8L engines to be found under the engine covers of Carrera and Carrera S models are new, featuring gasoline direct injection for the first time, and bringing more power and improved fuel economy in tow. The 3.6L engine now produces 345 horsepower (a 20-horse increase), while the 3.8 in Carrera S gets a 30-horsepower boost, coming in at a very healthy 385 HP. Both engines' fuel economy and emissions output levels are improved, with the Carrera Coupe boasting a 24 mpg (US) combined-cycle figure.

Also contributing to the cars' improved performance and fuel economy is the new 7-speed dual-clutch transmission that arrives for 2009. Dubbed Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK), it replaces the Tiptronic S in the Carrera and Carrera S. Visually, the 2009 Porsche 997 is freshened with bi-Xenon headlamps, LED daytime running lights, and restyled taillamps that now use LED illumination. Also in back, you'll see that the Carreras get ovoid dual exhaust outlets, while the Carrera S cars get a pair of double-barreled tips. The cars arrive in Europe next month with a U.S. launch to follow later in this year.

Gallery: 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S

[Source: Porsche]
Continue reading Officially Official: 2009 Porsche 911 gets direct injection and dual-clutch gearbox

Officially Official: 2009 Porsche 911 gets direct injection and dual-clutch gearbox originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 Jun 2008 09:22:00 EST. Drive new 911s. On a frozen lakebed. In Vail, Colorado.

Porsche's popular Travel Club has been enjoyed by thousands of enthusiasts in Europe and, until recently, wasn't available for those who wished to remain stateside. That's all changed when Camp4 was added to Porsche's Driving Experience program. As indicated by the name, fortunate travelers get their own 911 Carrera 4S to flog around an ice track in an effort to hone their winter driving skills and enjoy the luxuries that only well-to-do individuals can afford.

Porsche employs a cadre of experienced racers to coach the privileged few through a series of exercises designed to teach advanced car control, safe driving practices and the mental game that ensues when piloting a vehicle at its limits.

The amenities to be enjoyed are of the four-star variety, including a luxury hotel, fine dining and other niceties that make us salivate from afar. But when it really comes down to it, we just want to drive and that's what this program seems to do best.

More information is available through the Porsche Driving Experience website, here.
Porsche Travel Club: Come for the snow, stay for the drifts originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 11 Nov 2006 16:25:00 EST.
