Carlsson has been expertly tuning Mercedes-Benz products for more than 20 years now, but we can't say as we remember the outfit turning out anything quite so racy as this SLK 340 Judd that it has brought along to the Geneva Motor Show this year.

This SLK is meant for competition, obviously, and Carlsson has already booked the car to race in several hill climb events in the E1 category. The purpose-built racer should have a fighting chance to do well in said races, with a shape vetted in wind tunnel testing for maximum downforce, the SLK uses a carbon-fiber bodyshell to help achieve a curb weight of just about 1,720 pounds.

The featherweight SLK's name comes from its 3.4-liter V8 engine, which churns out a wicked 610 horsepower to go with its 317 pound-feet of torque. A Hewland transmission with paddle shift operation manages all of the thrust.

In addition to the European hill climbs on the docket, Carlsson intends on dicing with the likes of Hyundai and Suzuki in this year's Pikes Peak race. We look forward to seeing the SLK on that famous run, to be sure. Find a bit more information about the Carlsson SLK 340 Judd in the official press release below.
Continue reading Carlsson SLK 340 Judd is winged up for hill climb glory

Carlsson SLK 340 Judd is winged up for hill climb glory originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 06 Mar 2013 05:29:00 EST.
Carlsson's race-tuned versions of the Mercedes-Benz SLK have been taking checkered flags for years, and we won't be surprised if its SLK 340 hill climber fares any different. Developed by multiple German and Swiss hill climb champion Reto Meisel, the carbon-bodied SLK 340 with lightweight brakes and a closed underbody weighs 1,716 pounds. Propelling that tiny bit of weight is a 3.4-liter V8 from Judd with 610 horsepower, and it rolls on 18-inch wheels shod in Avon tires.

It will debut at the Geneva Motor Show before beginning its racing campaigns in the summer. This one won't just tear up roads in Europe, though - Meisel says he plans on bringing it to the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The press release below has more details.
Continue reading Carlsson turns Mercedes-Benz SLK into 610-HP hill-climb clawer

Carlsson turns Mercedes-Benz SLK into 610-HP hill-climb clawer originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 28 Jan 2013 08:00:00 EST.
It is clear that the Chinese appetite for luxury cars with monumental power and imperial luxury has barely begun, so automakers are positioning themselves to make sure they can provide a growing supply. Zhongsheng Group Holdings, owners of a dealer group that includes Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus showrooms, has taken a 70-percent stake in German tuner Carlsson according to a report in Reuters, and it has plans for its new purchase that offer enormous potential.

Saying that off-the-rack luxury cars have sold so well in major cities that they feel "like driving a Camry in Los Angeles," the Zhongsheng CEO is one of the new faces in the exotic customization segment. He plans to open a number of retail outlets for Carlsson, to use Carlsson to design bodykits and accessories for marques that his company sells, and to build a factory in China for local assembly.

Terms of the deal weren't disclosed. However, Reuters notes that Mercedes-Benz has officially approved the deal, which means warranties will still be honored for Carlsson customers everywhere.
Chinese take majority stake in German tuner Carlsson originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 06 Jun 2012 07:58:00 EST.
Customized Mercedes-Benz cars have been in the spotlight at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Mansory, Fab Design and Brabus have all fallen in love with the SLS AMG, but Carlsson continues its affair with the SL65 AMG. At last year's show, Carlsson unveiled its C25 super grand tourer. For 2011, Carlsson has come back with another iteration of the frighteningly fast two-door, this time called the C25 Royale.

What's the difference between last year's C25 and the 2011 C25 Royale? Both pack the same bone-crushingly powerful V12 under the hood, here producing 753 horsepower and 848 pound-feet of torque. The C25 Royale goes for a few extra steps in the weight savings department by utilizing a carbon fiber roof.

Just like last year, however, the C25 Royale will be limited to just 25 units. Also, to further increase the likelyhood that your neighbor will never have the same car as you, Carlsson says it will sell just one per country. Starting price on a Carlsson C25 Royale is €429,000, or just shy of $600,000 USD. Add in German VAT and the price rises to €510,510 (around $713,000 USD). As we said, that is the starting price. The options list is packed with further piggy bank busting features, which you see for yourself by reading the press release waiting after the jump.
The svelte Mercedes-Benz CLS has long been a favorite of tuners, and with the new model on the way, you can expect a veritable onslaught to ensue. The first bit of blood has been drawn by Carlsson, which has just unveiled its tuning program for the CLS350 before it even reaches showrooms.

Engine modifications are available for both the CLS350 gasoline and diesel V6 mills. With the petrol engine, power is increased to 333 horsepower and 302 pound-feet of torque (gains of 27 and 29, respectively), and the oil-burning powerplant now cranks out 320 hp and 575 lb-ft (increases of 55 hp and 96 lb-ft). Both the gasoline and diesel CLS350s will sprint to 62 miles per hour in just 5.9 seconds - 0.2 seconds faster than the stock petrol car and 0.3 seconds faster than the standard diesel model.

Carlsson's C-Tronic adjustable suspension (mounted to a choice of wheel options) is also on offer, as is a full body kit - complete with a new front bumper, grille, power-dome hood, LED fog lamps, side skirts, side vents and rear apron with diffuser - and an Alcantara and brushed aluminum-trimmed interior. Have a closer look in the gallery below.

We have to admit that we were a little disappointed when we saw the Carlsson C25 in person. The finished product doesn't seem to quite have the ultra-aggressive look of the original concept sketches. It could also be that we're not huge fans of the silver, black and orange paint scheme, nor of the brown and orange interior. In Carlsson's defense, the color combination was chosen by their customer, and we'd like to see another version in a solid color and a better choice of interior hues before we declare a verdict.

Even so, the C25 is an impressive beast. Under the hood is a Carlsson-built 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 putting out 753 horsepower and 974 lb-ft of torque, good for a conservatively listed 3.7 second sprint to 100 km/h and a top speed of just under 220 mph. To also appeal to potential clients, Carlsson has made exclusivity a top priority, limiting production to just 25 units and selling only one example in each country where they're available. As is proven by the car you see here, customers can choose from a near-limitless range of exterior and interior color combinations. Hit the jump for more details on the Carlsson C25 or browse through the gallery of live photos below.

Carlsson C25 rendering - click above for high-res image gallery

Another day, another supercar packing a beefed up Mercedes-Benz twin-turbo V12. Meet the Carlsson C25, the latest in a long line of heavily worked over Mercedes products sporting the Carlsson badge. Though in fairness to Carlsson, the C25 seems to take the revision much further than before. Obviously, the C25 is a reimagined SL65 AMG Black Series with more curves, cuts and vents. And the first two renderings rather handsome.

Under the hood sits a Brabus-style monument to war gods everywhere. The 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 summons up 753 horsepower and a near-ridiculous 848 pound-feet of torque. What is ridiculous is Carlsson's claim that the engine can actually produce 996 lb-ft of twist but that they've had to electronically limit it. You know what? Our coffee grinder can produce seventy billion torques, but it's voltage/reality limited. Point being, we really wish Mercedes tuners would stop saying the engines produce more torque than they do. Ahem...

Naturally, all that power makes the Carlsson C25 pretty fast (0-62 mph in 3.7 seconds and a 219 mph top speed). However, we are now living in bizarro times where a 3.7 second blast to 100 km/h isn't exactly headline news. What is news is the C25's exclusivity. You will be able to buy... one. That's right, Carlsson will only be selling one C25 per country. No word on which countries that entails, but we'll go ahead and guess: twenty-five of them, as Carlsson is only making twenty-five C25s. No word on the price tag either, but if we may hazard yet another guess: enough to make your head ache.

Interestingly, Carlsson is choosing not to sell the C25 as any sort of track day special. Instead, they are maintaining that the C25 is a "Super-GT." According to Carlsson's CEO Markus Schuster, "There are more than enough super sports car in this world which can only be safely driven on a race track. Therefore, we deliberately wanted to develop a car which is highly exclusive on the one hand and can be used for the daily journey to office on the other hand." How pleasant riding to the office on 25-series rear tires will be is anybody's guess. Press release after the jump.

It doesn't seem to be the optimal time to be producing high-end custom luxury cars, but Carlsson is pressing forward anyway and will introduce its third model in cooperation with leather company Etienne Aigner at the Geneva Motor Show next month. Carlsson previously unveiled the Aigner CK65 Eau Rouge coupe at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2007 and later the Aigner CK65 RS Blanchimont that took aim at the luxury limousine segment. The latest model, the Aigner CK55 RS Rascasse, is named for the second turn at Monaco and takes cues from both previous models including the paint scheme of the Eau Rouge and the limousine theme of the Blanchimont. Carlsson has converted the seven-seater to have just two rear thrones, leaving room for such amenities as an integrated refrigerator and a custom entertainment system with dual eight-inch screens and surround sound audio system. Of course, Aigner leather covers the seats, dash, door panels and center console. The exterior gets Carlsson's full body kit and three-piece forged wheels, and the 5.5L V8 is boosted to 456 bhp and 472 lb-ft torque. Full details on the CK55 RS Rascasse can be found in the press release after the jump.

[Source: Carlsson]
Continue reading Another hard-to-say Carlsson: Aigner CK55 RS Rascasse

Another hard-to-say Carlsson: Aigner CK55 RS Rascasse originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 Feb 2009 20:01:00 EST.
When our man Jonathon Ramsey sampled the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG last year, he found it to be "just right." So we have to cringe a little when a tuning company getting their hands on one. Why alter a car that needs nothing? To Carlsson's credit, it's hard to argue against more horsepower (600), more torque (520 lb-ft), a higher top speed (202 mph), and larger carbon composite brakes. Other modifications, like the new grill with the prancing Carlsson horse and the butterfly doors are more likely to draw criticism. The same goes for the paint, which Carlsson calls Stealth Titanium Graphite and claims is the "most matte" color ever produced. If all of that sounds like your cup of tea, Carlsson is offering complete cars for a mere 272,500 Euros, or about $355,000 for us Statesiders.
The high-end, super-luxury limousine market is a fairly limited one. There's Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Maybach and.... well, that's about it. But with Daimler possibly nixxing the struggling brand in the next few years, who will fill that gap for those who prefer to lounge in the back seat of a Mercedes rather than drive? Carlsson possibly has the answer with its... take a deep breath... Aigner CK65 RS Blanchimont based on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. This is the second vehicle that has been built in cooperation with Etienne Leather, the first being the Aigner CK65 Eau Rouge we spotted at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year. For the Blanchimont, Carlsson has installed enough items to use the car as a home office - custom leather upholstery, a Concert Hall infotainment system with surround sound, DVD system with three television monitors, hinged tables behind the front seats for laptops, and a wireless router that creates a personal hot spot inside the car. Oh yeah, the Blanchimont also features a 700-horsepower V12 and can reach 60 mph in under four seconds(!). More details can be found in the press release after the jump, and there's plenty of high-res photos in the gallery below.

Carlsson has applied its tuning magic to the new M-Class with a host of power, visual, and interior upgrades. Starting with the engine, Carlsson's performance kit for the 320 CDI engine boosts horsepower to 269 and torque to 452 lb-ft, and a new exhaust system with quad tailpipes is also available. The suspension can be upgraded with Carlsson's C-Tronic system that lowers the vehicle 40mm, and 22" 11-spoke wheels help fill the wheel wells even more. A subtle front spoiler and a diffuser-look rear skirt are the only exterior modifications. Interior appointments include alcantara and leather seats, a sport steering wheel, aluminum pedals, and illuminated door exit lights. Once again, Carlsson proves that sometimes it doesn't take much to make a better Benz.

Frankfurt's got more than you can shake a schnitzel at. But the only reason we snapped off a few shots of this particular CK was because of its two-tone hue, even though it is a subtle rip on the Veyron. Only after we got back and started going through some of our overlooked photos did we realized that this particular M-B was something a bit more special.

The Carlsson Aigner CK65 Eau Rouge is the product of a collaborative effort between the German tuning house and Etienne Aigner, a high-end leather purveyor. As you can imagine, the interior appointments are luxurious to a fault, with acres of dyed dead cow, Alcantara and wood lining every conceivable surface. What lies beneath though is far more compelling.

A turbocharged V12, aided by everything from new intercoolers to some heavy ECU tuning, produces over 700 HP and 800 lb.-ft. of torque, making the CL capable of a blast to 60 in 3.9 seconds. Ultra-light aluminum wheels, sized 21x9-inches in front and 21x10.5-inches in the rear, are wrapped in Dunlop SP Sport Maxx ZR 21 tires, reducing unsprung mass by a full 50-percent at all four corners.

There are more mods than we can mention, so Carlsson's press release is posted after the jump. And you can check out a gallery of live and press pics below.

Gallery: Carlsson Aigner CK65 Eau Rouge

Continue reading Frankfurt 2007: Carlsson Aigner CK65 Eau Rouge

Frankfurt 2007: Carlsson Aigner CK65 Eau Rouge originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 15 Sep 2007 18:32:00 EST. Based on a kit the company had already prepared for the SLK350, the CK35 bumps the C's 3.5L V6 up to 295 horsepower. This, combined with an updated air filter and exhaust system, gives the sedan a 1-62 time of six seconds along with additional growl coming from the twin double-barrel tips.

As you can see, Carlsson has also prepared a new bodykit for C. It incorporates new skirting all around, including a rear diffuser in the rear bumper. 19" Brilliant Edition wheels add the proverbial cherry on top of this Teutonic sundae.

Full press release after the jump.

[Source: Carlsson]

Gallery: Carlsson CK35 Performance Kit for C-Class

Continue reading Carlsson intros CK35 performance kit for the new Mercedes C-Class

Carlsson intros CK35 performance kit for the new Mercedes C-Class originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 01 Apr 2007 12:52:00 EST. The Carlsson CK50 begins life as a Euro-market GL 500 (currently, we only have the GL 450 here in the States). The base car is no slouch, dishing out some 388 horsepower, but we're talking Deutsch tuners here, and with these guys, horsepower numbers beginning with number "3" are routinely laughed at. As such, the CK50 kit turns up the juice with a healthy 435 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque.

Complementing the pumped-up engine is a Carlsson exhaust that gives the truck a meaner sound in addition to augmenting power and torque. The new mufflers are each tipped with double-oval outlets (not shown in the attached photos, btw).

They also drop the suspension 35mm with their C-Tronic lowering kit. C-Tronic automatically adjusts ride height based on road conditions and bestows improved handling and looks on the beefy GL. No tuner car is complete without an assortment of shiny new wheels, and the CK50 is no exception. Lightweight forged eleven-spoke 22" wheels or polished 20-inchers are available. Inside, Carlsson will deck out the interior as much (or as little) as you like. New leather, wood, carbon fiber, and copious amounts of electronic gadgetry can be had to create a real custom look.

Naturally, added power and improved handling are nice things to have, but in the case of the Carlsson CK50, the suspension / wheel package really improves the SUV's aesthetics. Carlsson doesn't bother with any unnecessary bodywork, instead keeping the GL's stock, handsome lines intact. The lowered suspension and larger wheels give it a sportier, more wagon-like appearance in profile, which we like very much. Appropriate, given that most of these trucks are probably being used on-road as big station wagons anyway. The CK50 is visually understated, yet possesses enough power to go 0-62 in 6.1 seconds. Not a bad combo for a pretty large SUV.

(Photos, press release after the jump)

[Source: Carlsson]
Continue reading Carlsson CK50 antes up 435 HP for the Mercedes GL-Class

Carlsson CK50 antes up 435 HP for the Mercedes GL-Class originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Oct 2006 11:53:00 EST. Based on the already formidable Mercedes CL 600 with its bi-turbo V12, Carlsson works some of their magic and raises horsepower from 517 to an eponymous 600 and torque goes up to a staggering 740 ft lbs. Even in such a large coupe, this is enough to snap off 4.4 second 0-60 times all day long. Because of tire restrictions, top end is governed at 320 km/h or 199 mph.

And to make the journey towards the double-century mark more enjoyable, the exhaust note has been retuned through the use of new center and rear elements as well as new quad exhaust tips. The interior has been fitted with a combination of Alcantara and leather with rhombus quilting ,plus a Carlsson sports steering trimmed with either leather and Alcantara or leather and wood.

Outside, you'll notice Carlsson's 3/11 Ultra Light three-piece, 11-spoke forged wheels wrapped in 21-inch Dunlop SP Sport Maxx tires. And this being Carlsson you'll see unique aerodynamic components, such as front spoiler and rear skirt lips in the typical Carlsson diffuser look, as well as the striking rear spoiler and stainless steel grille insert. The CK60 also utilizes Carlsson's C-Tronic(R) electronic lowering kit that drops the CL 30 mm.

[Source: Carlsson via World Car Fans]
Continue reading Carlsson CK60: More goodness for the new CL

Carlsson CK60: More goodness for the new CL originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Sep 2006 17:21:00 EST.
