The Holden VF Commodore is getting ready to go on sale in Australia, and the first commercials for the new full-size sedan range have just hit the Internet. Why is this newsworthy to us, you ask? Well, in both spots, our version of the car – the soon-to-arrive 2014 Chevrolet SS – is prominently featured, giving us our first look at the new flagship Chevy in motion.
Small businesses are the lifeblood of our economy, but sometimes word-of-mouth advertising is more effective than attempting to create your own commercial. Take this video for Arlen's Transmission in Burbank, CA, for example. It is equal parts hilarious and creepy, and comes from the mind of comedy duo Rhett & Link, who've made quite a name for themselves turning a love of local commercials into an art form. The pair finds local businesses looking for free promotion, and then works with them
Chrysler has done a pretty good job as of late turning its television commercials into pep talks or rallying cries, but for its first ad for the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, it turned to Al Pacino's inspirational speech from the movie Any Given Sunday. In the movie, Pacino's character talks about how football is a game of inches, but the commercial, titled Chip Away, focuses more on the attention to detail that Jeep has exhibited on its updated flagship SUV.
It used to be that a wild car dealership commercial meant a screaming frontman in a hideous suit making terrible puns and begging for you to help him out of some terrible predicament having to do with surplus inventory. No more – as production values have increased so has the number of commercials to so unusual that you spend the first few seconds trying to believe what you're seeing.
There have been many great car commercials over the years, but is it possible to define the best? Well, Ad Week recently took a crack at it by rating the top commercials of the year by looking at their view counts on YouTube, but Auto Express took a more democratic approach by putting the decision to a vote. Just after Thanksgiving, Auto Express came up with a list of the 20 popular commercials, and it tasked its readers with choosing the winner for the best car ad of all time. The winner? Honda
Toyota tried to make family hauler commercials cool with its "Swagger Wagon" spot for the Sienna minivan back in 2010, but now Fiat looks to have created the unrated version of Toyota's idea with a web ad for its new Fiat 500L called "The Motherhood." Trying to cater to the 500L's target demographic, no punches are pulled as this blonde British mom attempts to describe all the joys of family raising.
Just one model year after a complete redesign, Honda saw fit to make some pretty big changes to the Civic for 2013. Now, with the car about to hit dealers, we're getting our first look at the company's advertising direction for its high-volume compact car. Done as a comic-book-style action cartoon, this video is for the sportier Civic Si models and is obviously geared toward younger, more enthusiast-oriented buyers.
Ford is getting pretty creative with ad spots for the new 2013 Ford Fusion. After seeing Ford make its rivals disappear, we now get to see it make the new Fusion fly. In a new television commercial called Cliff, the car is shown being driven off the side of a mountain and flying through the air. Instead of relying solely on CGI to make the car fly, Ford threw in some good old-fashioned stunt driving for added realism.
