Smart ForTwo preys on your back-seat fears - Click above for video after the jump

Are you afraid of getting into your car late at night, only to look in the rearview mirror and see a face staring back at you that isn't yours? Don't lie - we all have those random, irrational fears which are all but unfounded. Capitalizing on just such a fear, Daimler's Smart produced a commercial which preyed on those fears and closed with a clever tagline espousing the fact that Smart ForTwos don't have a back seat.

The ad was a huge hit in Germany, where it was originally slated to run during the trailers in movie theaters. It garnered such approval that it eventually made its way into television spots throughout Europe and has now ended up on Youtube as a "banned" ad. As we understand it, though, the ad wasn't banned, it just never aired in the States. The 'banned" moniker should help it earn some views, but the commercial is good enough on its own to warrant viewing.

See for yourself after you turn on the lights, check behind you and make the jump.

Although auto industry money is a bit tight at the moment, in order to sell vehicles, automakers have to buy advertising. Lots of advertising, in big, expensive campaigns with high production values and creative that's at the vanguard of style. Advertising agencies that can handle the needs of giant clientele with international brands are still happy to welcome automotive accounts through the doors.

Advertising Age has taken a look at the still-big auto advertising business and what fifteen assorted manufacturers drop on advertising per year. Landing one of these big vehicular fishes would surely make an account executive smile, though AdAge rightly posits that some of are sexier than others. Toyota spends the most at more than $800 million, with Ford coming in second at nearly $700 million. The biggest accounts don't seem to be in any danger of having their deals come up for review, however, so it may be easier to poach someone who's already looking, like Chrysler or Volvo. Hit the link for all the figures.

Car has listed what it considers ten of the "best, funniest, and cheesiest" UK car adverts. Those of us Stateside aren't likely to have seen many of them, like that for the Austin Allegro -- called "The new driving force from Austin" -- but there's enough old and new for everyone. Even Steve McQueen and the Rocky theme make an appearance (but not together). Even with some of the newer ones, however, you occasionally wonder: is that really what the greatest minds of our generation have come up with to sell a car? And there's the inevitable follow-up: did that commercial actually get me to buy that car?

But Advertising Age takes a look at the marketing muddle that will need to be overcome soon after signing the deed.

The article points out problems such as competing models like the Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango to the "vaguely upmarket" Chrysler brand. Looks like the new owners will be pumping a lot of cash into ads educating customers on what's available from Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep.

Oh, and speaking of Jeep, AdAge quotes John Morel, director-product and market planning at American Suzuki Motors Corp., as saying the iconic American offroading brand has been stretched too thin. "They need to keep it pure," Morel said, which we read as "Get rid of the Compass."

Chrysler's brands have long depended on platform sharing and re-branding, so expecting that issue to go away anytime soon is probably wishful thinking. Better defining of the brands, however, wouldn't be so hard to do, and will probably be one of the first marketing pushes by any new owner. But then, it's all speculation until we actually know who that buyer will be. Stay tuned.

[Source: Advertising Age]
AdAge: Bargain bin Chrysler a marketing nightmare originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Apr 2007 15:06:00 EST.
