2013 Renault Captur features zip-off seat covers, crisper drawer glovebox [w/videos]

Evidently, Renault's executives in France have not been content to sit idly by as their alliance partners at Nissan have happily mopped up enviable global sales totals with their Juke crossover. We've been hearing about an answer from Renault for some time now, and the production Captur is finally a reality at the Geneva Motor Show.

Packing what it says is the styling and driving position of an SUV, the configurable interior of a minivan and the driving verve of a small sedan, the Captur is hoping to become a big-volume player in Europe's mushrooming small CUV class that also includes cars like the Škoda Yeti. Less boxy than its Czech rival, the Captur's fluid styling is also unlikely to furrow as many brows and wrinkle as many noses as the love/hate Juke. And taking a page from the Mini playbook, Captur will offer a contrasting roof paint color to increase personalization possibilities. Even if it lacks some of the visual charisma (and the butterfly doors) of the 2011 Captur concept, we think it's a very handsome package overall, one we wouldn't mind seeing in North America.

Clever details abound in the interior - check out the videos below - including a large crisper-drawer-like glovebox and trick washable seat covers that zip off and can be changed depending on one's mood.

Renault hasn't spilled all the details yet on the Captur's powertrains - or even indicated whether all-wheel drive will be available - but it has confided that both gas and diesel engines will be offered.

Renault brings Captur from concept to reality with new CUV

Renault has officially brought the Captur Concept to life with a new small crossover. The production version has abandoned the wild scissor doors and bulbous fenders of the concept in favor of a more mature five-door configuration.

Based on the Renault Clio, the Captur offers buyers a range of gasoline and diesel engines. While the automaker hasn't served up any drivetrain specifics, we'd be surprised if the Captur option sheet didn't come littered with the same powerplants as its cousin, including a turbocharged .9-liter three-cylinder and a 1.2-liter turbocharged gasoline engine as well as a 1.5-liter diesel. A six-speed dual-clutch transmission handles shifting duties in all applications.

The Captur will be built at the Renault facility in Valladolid, Spain. Expect to see the machine receive an official unveil at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show in March. Renault is planning a line of crossovers based on Nissan platforms and styled after the Captur concept that debuted at this year's Geneva Motor Show.

According to Auto Express, the new family of soft-roaders will start with Nissan Juke-based Captur, slated to be the smallest in the lineup, and offer a mid-size model based on the upcoming Qashqai, while the top-spec model will ride on Nissan X-Trail underpinnings.

Engine sizes will range from 1.6 to 1.8 liters, and there will likely be two versions of Renault's twin-turbo diesel on offer, generating 128 or 158 horsepower. Renault promises to use heavy styling cues from the Captur concept, including its huge Renault badge, curvaceous bodywork and full-width grille.

According to AE, the entire range should have debuted by 2016, with the first models arriving sometime in 2014.

The Renault Captur appears to be the Nissan Juke of tomorrow, but it's here on the Geneva Motor Show floor today. It also features a more muscular-yet-curvy body than its Japanese cousin. Renault describes the Captur as a sporty crossover that would be utilized by two people bent on exploring the world.

Those two explorers will likely be happy to know that under the hood sits a 1.6-liter twin-turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which produces 160 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque at just 1,750 rpm. If you failed math (like us), feel free to break out the calculator in order to prove that the Captur is in the 100-horsepower-per-liter club.

The interior of the Renault Captur is pure conceptual craziness. A series of elastic cords take the place of traditional seating fabric. The idea is to provide the same support and comfort found when relaxing in a hammock. It certainly sounds interesting, but in the end, it's pure auto show zazz.

It typically takes months, if not years after a concept car debuts before an automaker confirms whether it will or will not go into production. But in the case of the Renault Captur, it hasn't even been publicly unveiled yet and reports are already surfacing about its production car future.

According to foreign reports, Renault will build the dynamic crossover as part of the next generation of Clio hatchbacks due next year. Of course, certain elements will be lost in translation from show stand to showroom, but we hope the nifty turn signals integrated into the bodywork make the transition. Those wheels are pretty sweet, too.

We'll get our first glimpse at the Captur concept at the Geneva Motor Show next week.

We brought you initial details on the Renault Captur crossover concept just a few days ago, and surmised that it looked remarkably similar - if less bug-eyed - to the Nissan Juke. They are, after all, corporate cousins. But the Renault Captur incorporates a number of innovative features of its own, like two-part doors that swing up and down for easy ingress and egress, giant wheels that seem to blend seamlessly into the tires, and that exo-skeleton roof structure. Perhaps the Captur's most intriguing design element, which you can see for yourself in the footage after the jump, is the lighting that's worked into the body panels themselves. The lines between vehicle segments and bodystyles are getting more blurred all the time. And it isn't just the Germans with their "four-door coupes" and "sports activitiy vehicles," either. Nissan has proven just as capable of blurring the line between SUV and hatchback with their crossovers - vehicles like the Rogue and Juke. And now the Japanese automaker's sister company, Renault, appears to be following down the same path with its new Captur concept.

The Captur follows last year's DeZir show car in showing the way forward for the French automaker's design language, capturing, as it were, the spirit that future Renaults will be taking. Of course this being a French concept car, it encompasses certain elements that won't ever see production. Things like the fantastical interior, to start with, and those 22-inch wheels whose white spokes seem to blend right into the tires. But if you want an overall picture of where Renault is heading, this is where it's at.

Powered by Renault's Energy dCi 160 twin-turbo engine giving 160 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, the Captur also incorporates dual-clutch gearbox.

Although Renault doesn't say so specifically in the press release after the jump, where you can scope out all the details, we're assuming we'll see the Captur on the show stand at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, from which we'll be sure to bring you our up-close-and-personal impressions and images.
