Following the culmination of the 2009 FIA Formula One World Championship, slots were granted to four new teams for the upcoming season. They were all ecstatic about the prospect of dicing it with the likes of McLaren and Ferrari, but not all of them are guaranteed to make it when the flag waves at Bahrain in just a couple months' time. This comes right from the mouth Bernie Ecclestone, F1's notoriously outspoken commercial director.

Rumors have been circulating for months that at least two of the teams - USF1 and Campos Meta - were having trouble finalizing their car designs and getting their houses in order. The other two newcomers - Lotus and Virgin - have hardly been immune to the rumors, either.

Given the difficulties involved in designing, building and fielding two new cars from scratch, Ecclestone doubts all four will be ready to start the season, much less see it through to the end. Bernie's solution would have been to allow the newcomers to purchase chassis from any of the established teams, and field just one car to start off. Good idea or not, it's a little late at this point, so we'll just have to sit back and see how it unfolds.

The past few years in Formula One have seen an unprecedented return of legendary family names to the sport: names like Villeneuve, Piquet and Rosberg. But the most hyped scion of racing fame has been Bruno Senna.

The nephew of the late, great Ayrton Senna was rated highly by his world-champion uncle and has been on everyone's watch list for the past few years since he began competing in open-wheel formula racing. The young Brazilian was tipped to race in F1 for Honda until the Japanese automaker (which, incidentally, powered all three of his uncle's championship-winning McLarens) withdrew from the sport. Instead Bruno bided his time, won a few GP2 races and completed the 2008 championship as runner-up while finishing on the podium at his Le Mans Series debut at Catalunya.

Those waiting for the Senna name to return to F1, however, can stop waiting as Bruno has signed on with Campos Meta 1. Notably, despite the family ties with several teams on the grid - including Lotus, McLaren and Williams, to say nothing of the STR ties through family friend and confidante Gerhard Berger - Bruno ended up signing with one of the new teams joining the grid next year.

There's been no word on who will partner with him for the rookie squad, but sources suggest a more experienced veteran driver (like Alex Wurz, for example) is in the mix. But one thing's for sure: Senna's going to have all eyes fixed on him, and he'll have quite the reputation to live up to.
If you thought the series of driver changes in the middle of this ongoing Formula One season was something, it's nothing compared to the grand game of musical chairs expected to ensue as the season draws to a close. With BMW closing up shop, several new teams joining the grid and at least a couple of former world champions switching teams for next year's championship, we're shaping up for the biggest jumble the F1 circus has seen in years. Follow the jump to see how it's unfolding so far.
But when he left McLaren - the team with which he won three World Championships - at the end of the 1993 season, he reportedly declared, "If you think I'm good, just wait until you see my nephew Bruno." That's quite an endorsement. The following season, Ayrton died at San Marino, and Formula One has been waiting for the return of the Senna name and legendary prowess ever since. According to the latest reports, that's exactly what we could get as soon as next season.

The young heir to the Senna name has been working his way up the formula racing ladder for the past several years, leapfrogging from Formula BMW and Formula Renault up to Formula Three (where he won several races), GP2 (where he was runner up in this year's championship) and even a third-place finish at the Le Mans Series season opener at Catalunya. He earned a test with Honda last year and was tipped to replace Rubens Barrichello until the Japanese automaker - which had also powered his uncle's McLarens - pulled out of the sport. Now, however, the promising young Brazilian is reportedly being considered by Campos, one of the new teams joining the Formula One grid for next season.

Other drivers under consideration include McLaren's veteran test driver Pedro de la Rosa or Marc Gené (who was recently passed over for the race seat at Ferrari in favor of his fellow tester Luca Badoer) as well as Russian prodigy Vitaly Petrov and Spanish up-and-comer Antonio Garcia.

[Source: F1-Live | Image: JOSEP LAGO/AFP/Getty]
Ayrton's nephew Bruno Senna up for F1 race seat next season? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 13 Aug 2009 18:28:00 EST. First the biggest teams in F1 were slated to split off and form their own series. Then everything seemed reconciled, until Max Mosley got all torqued off again and threatened to scuttle the whole deal. It's anyone's guess at this point - we think the one series will be on track for next season - but in the meantime, the FIA issued the official list of entries for 2010.

Alongside the ten current teams (Ferrari, McLaren, BMW Sauber, Renault, Toyota, Red Bull, Toro Rosso, Williams, Force India and Brawn) returning for next season, the FIA chose three out of the dozen prospective teams that lodged applications to join the series. As it turned out, the two parties - the first representing the teams currently participating in the sport and the second its governing body - have apparently reconciled their differences.

But as it turns out, even if all of the existing teams walked, the FIA would still have had a field of eager teams ready to take their place - that's one heck of a bargaining chip. One way or another, all indications are that the cost of running an F1 team will be drastically reduced in the near future, starting with next season. Lower costs mean easier access, and teams have been lining up by the dozen to take part in the new, more accessibly Formula One. Follow the jump to read all about 'em.

[Source: Autosport | Image: Mark Thompson/Getty]
Continue reading Grand Primer: A dozen new teams lodge bids to enter F1

Grand Primer: A dozen new teams lodge bids to enter F1 originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 06 Jun 2009 10:33:00 EST.
If you're not familiar with the GP2 Series by now, think of it as the formula racing equivalent to college football. It can sometimes make for an even more engaging spectacle and gives a chance to preview who will make it into the big leagues of Formula One next. Since the series inception in 2005, each year's champion has earned a race seat in F1. And more than that, every year the runner-up has secured a testing role with the Renault F1 team. Considering that the drivers who have graduated from GP2 in the past few years have turned out to be some of the most talented young rookies in F1, any formula racing fan worth his lug-nuts keeps a keen eye trained on GP2.

This year's championship just wrapped up this weekend in Monza where the F1 circus came to race the Italian Grand Prix, providing a secondary spectacle for racing fans who braved the rain to get a glimpse of the action. Each stop on the GP2 calendar includes two races: the feature race on Saturday, and the reverse-grid sprint race on Sunday. To find out who took the honors and who you should watch in the big leagues for next year, follow the jump.
