When it comes to camping, Americans tend to either rough it with tents or go for broke in massive bus-size recreational vehicles. Down in Australia and New Zealand, the caravan reigns supreme. Not to be confused with the Dodge minivan offering, caravans provide humble accommodations for vacationing, but they can be pulled by much smaller vehicles than, say, a fullsize Airstream trailer.

New Zealand-based design house W2 has unveiled a new twist on the caravan with the Romotow, and it is clearly not your ordinary camper trailer. Claimed to be inspired by a USB drive, this trailer folds in and out of itself, providing extra living space. Lightweight materials are used, and the concept also features power-assisted braking, self-leveling pads and shocks and a backup camera. The interior features a bathroom, kitchenette, louvers for cross ventilation, and available features such as deck area and sliding doors.

W2 is currently at the design and testing stage. A fully functional Romotow should be ready by 2015. If you are a camper that's tired of roughing it, or one who enjoys the outdoors but would prefer more domestic confines, the Romotow looks like a solid option for a camping tr- er, caravan. Check out more on this wild concept in the video below.
Continue reading Innovative trailer concept inspired by USB drive [w/video]

Innovative trailer concept inspired by USB drive [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 23 Dec 2012 08:59:00 EST.
The Jeep Wrangler is already one of the best off-road vehicles on the market, but Thaler Design will help turn your Wrangler Unlimited into the ultimate off-road RV with its ActionCamper kit. The Austrian company adds a fiberglass camper shell featuring a pop-up soft top with enough space for a two-person weekend adventure. Even better, the top is removable (with very heavy lifting required) and it only adds a net 440 pounds to the Wrangler's curb weight after components such as the factory top, rear doors, rear seat and roll bars are all removed.

With the styling of an old military ambulance, the ActionCamper is about everything you need for a short off-road excursion, including a plenty of storage space, a refrigerator, stove, toilet and sink. The camper comes with a four-gallon fresh-water tank as well as a black-water (sewage/drainage) tank that can hold 5.5 gallons. The extendable nozzle from the sink can also be used as a shower. There's also a fold-out king-size bed and, with the top popped, you get enough room in the kitchen/sitting area for a six-foot, three-inch person to stand up.

GizMag says the ActionCamper has a retail price of $53,500, not including the donor Jeep. That's serious money but it's still cheaper than the survivalists' special Earthroamer XV-JP.
ActionCamper turns your four-door Jeep Wrangler into an off-road RV for two originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 03 Nov 2012 20:01:00 EST.
After Lawrence Drake gave up his pickup truck for a Chevrolet HHR, he wanted a camping shelter more hardy than a tent. The trick? Finding a solution that was in line with the HHR's 1,000-pound tow capacity. He found it when he designed the Teal Camper, a modular enclosure that fits on a four-by-eight trailer and weighs just 630 pounds empty, including the trailer.

Basically, the camper is a set of weather-sealed panels that are bound with Phillips-head bolts and a strap. They come in a few configurations, such as corner pieces and those with windows and door openings, and you can assemble them in rectangular shapes as small or large as you like. The standard kit comes with a bed that sleeps two and a table, but Drake has designed lightweight optional fixtures like canvas cabinets. There's also a pop-top that can extend headroom to six feet, and the entire assembly can be bolted to a plywood floor with straps or angle brackets.

Drake's gone as far as he can on his own resources and is looking for investors for manufacturing. As such, there's no price tag yet but he projects around $3,000 for an empty shell. It's a neat concept that we think deserves a shot. Check it out in the gallery of photos.
Teal Camper brings modularity to the outdoors originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 06 May 2012 14:03:00 EST.
This weekend, Audi marked the competition debut of its latest R18 race cars at the second round of the World Endurance Championship at Spa-Francorchamps. Yet the most spectacular race car running on any track this weekend was thousands of miles away at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway in the 24 Hours of Lemons "Loudon Annoying" event taking place at the very same time.

Yes, that's a pop-up camper trailer that's been converted into a race car by SpeedyCop & the Gang of Outlaws. And there's video of it after the jump. Now, before you click, see if you can guess what the car underneath is. (Hint, there's another photo in the gallery that makes it very clear.) That answer is also posted after the break, and it makes the whole rig even more fantastic.

We're big fans of the Volkswagen bus, from the original Type 2 and its descendants, to the Vanagon that replaced it, and even the front-drive Eurovan. While VW hasn't sold one of these in the U.S. since it discontinued the Eurovan in 2003, the rest of the world has enjoyed the Transporter T5 for the past decade. The VWs are immensely popular camper vans in Europe (especially those with pop-top roofs), and the novel Doubleback conversion shown above takes the formula to another level.

With an electric, slide-out rear pod similar to what you find on many modern RVs, the Doubleback can extend a Transporter by an additional six-and-a-half feet, offering an entire rear bedroom. The company says the extra room adds only 286 pounds to the vehicle's curb weight and extends in under 45 seconds. The conversion eliminates any rear seating, so your camper will be a two-seater, or you can get a front bench installed to fit an extra passenger in the middle.

At today's exchange rates, the Doubleback sells for about $87,975, including British taxes, or the company can convert your vehicle. Be sure to check out the photo gallery to see more of this cool bus.
The Doubleback fits a big RV into a small space originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 31 Mar 2012 14:02:00 EST.
Love it or hate it, Toyota has done an impressive job with the Prius. What started as a single model has grown to a whole family, including the versatile new Prius V minivan. But for some even that won't prove enough space, so Japanese conversion outfit Campinn has developed this rather bizarre appendage for the standard Prius hatchback.

Unveiled this weekend at the Tokyo Auto Salon, this conversion turns the current Prius into a camping van of sorts, complete with convertible sofa-bed and overhead sleeping area. It's made of fiber-reinforced plastic and boosts the car's length to 196 inches and its height to 81.1, and comes complete with a skylight and a back door for slipping out un-noticed when people are gathered around the front gawking and laughing at what looks like a hybrid with a tumor.
Toyota Prius camper conversion has us charging for the woods originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Jan 2012 09:30:00 EST.
Volkswagen buyers in the Netherlands will soon have the opportunity to get their hands on a brand-new 2012 Volkswagen Type 2 Microbus. That's right, the original hippie van will be available brand-new in Holland as a 2012 model.

How is that possible? Well, while the buses went out of production a long time ago in Europe and the states, South Americans have been enjoying unfettered access to the Type 2 (currently sold there as the Kombi) for decades. The Type 2s slated for the streets of Holland will be built in Brazil with their South American-market counterparts and then shipped to the Dutch market.

As you can see, the T2 hasn't been changed much to make it more suitable for modern families. That spare tire on the front end, however, is anything but. The van's air-cooled flat four-cylinder engine has been replaced with a more modern 1.4-liter inline four, and the "spare tire" is actually an air filter that obscures placement of a front-mounted radiator.

For now, these camper-only vans are only scheduled to be available only in Holland, but they'll be eligible for registration anywhere within the European Union. We think things will stay that way, so don't expect any to make it Stateside.
Volkswagen Type 2 returns to Europe via Brazil originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 12 Nov 2011 14:03:00 EST.
Behold the Sealander; Germany's take on go-anywhere camper. This little vessel is small and light enough to be towed by any modestly-powered CUV and features a fully-configurable interior. Inside, there's space for a four-person table, a kitchenette and a sleeping area, and there's even space outside for a deck. Why would you want a deck on your tiny camper? Because you'll need somewhere to stand when you take to the open seas in your home away from home. As its name suggests, the Sealander is completely amphibious. All you have to do is strap on the pint-sized motor and avoid any small craft warnings.

If you've got an inkling to call der Schwimmcaravan your very own, you'll need to brush up on your German and import one from the EU. Head over to the Sealander site for more information, and check out a video of the aquatic RV in action.
Continue reading The aquatic camper we've been waiting for

The aquatic camper we've been waiting for originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 29 Sep 2011 10:01:00 EST.
Volkswagen has a rich heritage when it comes to camper vans. But while the German automaker may only offer the Chrysler-built Routan in North America, overseas, it tends to that heritage quite closely, and for its latest model, Wolfsburg has partnered with outdoor outfitter Berghaus for the special edition you see here.

Spun off the Transporter's California line (which somewhat ironically isn't offered in its namesake or any other state in the union), the Berghaus edition packs all the regular features of the standard model and upgrades with some unique touches. That means four seats, an electrically-operated pop-up roof, onboard kitchen and folding dinette. What distinguishes the Berghaus edition, however, is its long list of extra equipment, including a bike rack, folding awning, 18-inch alloys and special badging both inside and out.

It also comes with a special rucksack, a pair of sleeping bags, gloves, hats, mugs, water bottle, flask and more. All that kit is driven by a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel and six-speed manual transmission with ABS, traction control, engine braking and stability management. Only 80 examples will be offered in the UK (no word on further distribution in other markets), and you can scope out the full details in the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Volkswagen teams up with Berghaus on special edition California camper van

Volkswagen teams up with Berghaus on special edition California camper van originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Sep 2011 07:59:00 EST.
Fancy a camping trip? You could go out into the wilderness and pitch a tent, or you could take a van like an original Volkswagen bus and enjoy the great outdoors through its windows. But if both of these sound enticing, there's a third option: the Volkswagen Camper Van tent. Yep.

Officially licensed by Volkswagen, this tent replicates the outside of '65 VW Type 2 Transporter van at full scale. Available in red, yellow or blue, it can accommodate four adults in two separate zippered roomms, which could be perfect for reliving those memories from the Summer of Love - or living them again for the first time when that acid flashback kicks in. Deliveries begin in August, but you can pre-order yours now at Firebox.com for about $480.
Volkswagen Camper Van is back... in tent form originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 19 May 2011 11:31:00 EST. This is the time of year when you can't help but realize that you've been tucked away in an office while the desk calendar has been the only one getting a workout. It's time to look at a map and pack a bag. Coincidentally, my friend Tom had the same thing in mind. He's about to have his first baby, doing work on his first home, and he's getting a look in his eye that suggests it's time for a breather. For me, the open road is always calling and, when a friend is ready to join in, it means the stars have aligned for a road trip.

Those two little words create all kinds of questions, the first of which centers upon what type of vehicle to use. We're both 30, so we'd like a little luxury but... we're both 30, so we'd like a little adventure too. Thankfully, a brief call from Airstream put my name on the keys of a 2011 Avenue slumbering in a Los Angeles parking lot.

All that stood between us and our chosen camping spot was 100 yards of loose rock - Precambrian granite that formed slippery masses of pebbles and shards, which ranged in size from as small as a quarter to larger hunks resembling a freshly sharpened axe head. It's difficult to walk on with hiking boots, let alone drive across.

Did we mention we had no intentions of pitching a tent? No, what we had in mind was a fire, a few hot dogs and a nice warm bed with a roof over our heads. There are only a few vehicles in the world that we would trust with the success or failure of our weekend getaway, and the Jeep Wrangler happens to be one of them.

Better still, we were piloting one of Jeep's shiny new Trail Edition Campers, which was firmly attached to the trailer hitch of a Deep Water Blue 2010 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. This, boys and girls, is how camping is done properly.

If you had your heart set on a Volkswagen Amarok before the company made it clear that the truck wasn't heading to North America, prepare to have your wounds lightly salted. A company by the name of Bimobil has gone through the effort of creating a camper conversion for the handsome pickup. Instead of the drop-in style units that we're used to seeing here in the states, the Bimobil piece actually replaces the Amarok's bed altogether. From what we can tell, owners can easily detach the camper once they get to a suitable location in the event they have to go to town for important supplies. You know, like beer. Or a snake-bite kit.

Our Google Translator isn't much help in discerning exactly how much Bimobil is asking for the swank digs, nor what other special features the camper boasts. Even so, we're thinking that there are few better ways to vacation than from the back of a pickup. Besides, how awesome does this thing look? If you happen to speak German, you can head over to Bimobil's website and dream a little dream of mobile living. Otherwise, content yourself by having a look at our gallery below.

The caravan you see above is stuck betwixt the two walls. We don't know how they got it in there, if they couldn't get it out - nevertheless, the reality on the ground is that it wouldn't come up. One would think there had been enough of these videos from all corners of the world to prove that sledgehammering the throttle doesn't solve problems. Yet this gent, who isn't in Iceland, is the next to learn that lesson the hard, and expensive, way. Follow the jump for the turmoil. Hat tip to Duy!

Designed with an eye toward post-apocalyptic living, Paul Elkins whipped up this trailer to pull behind his bicycle at the Burning Man festival. It's 100 pounds of home away from home, built from aluminum tubing reclaimed from a satellite dish and skinned with the same type of plastic commonly used for political campaign signs. A card table and some wheelbarrow parts are also in the mix, following the idea of using what's on hand after a disaster.

While Elkins designed another version of this idea that's more suitable for road use, this rig looks pretty comfortable and well equipped. It harnesses the energy of the sun to charge batteries and dehydrate food - you'll be able to read a book at night while enjoying your own beef jerky recipe. Hot water for a shower is also provided courtesy of the sun. It's all pretty cozy, and it's way cheaper than an Airstream. Checking out Elkins' blog reveals plenty of ingenious projects that might give you something to do during the coming winter months.

Gallery: Homemade Bike Trailer

[Source: High Mileage Trikes via Neatorama]

Recession Vacation: bike-pulled camper built from salvage originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 05 Sep 2009 15:02:00 EST.
Some of us enthusiast types are still upset that Volkswagen never released the retro-futuristic new Bus first seen back in 2001. Looking backwards with 20-20 vision, perhaps the conceptual Bus was a little too slavish to the Type II's (a.k.a. Transporter, a.k.a. Station Wagon, a.k.a. Bus) design aesthetic and not concerned enough with its zeitgeist - affordable, practical family fun.

Meet the new VW Caravelle (passenger van), Transporter (cargo van) and California (camper van - not shown). These Golf-nosed successors to not only the Transporter, but the Vanagon and Eurovan, will be making their refreshed debuts in a few short weeks at the Frankfurt Auto Show. Beyond receiving a new shnoz, other tweaks include a range of common rail TDI engines, new rear-light clusters, more aerodynamic side mirrors, touchscreen navigation, USB connectivity, updated ESP and a hill-start assist feature. Plus, you can get either van with a manual gearbox.

While both these cars are Euro-only (Volkswagen hasn't sold a Eurovan in the U.S. since 2003), it is good to see a modern version of a Westphalia-style camper van. And you know, maybe Volkswagen should think about ditching the Routan and bringing these new vans here... especially the pop-top California? Just a thought. Either way, we'll know more come Frankfurt.
If you're one of those take-no-prisoners off-road types, then we've found the perfect camper trailer for you. It's called the Tvan, and it's made by Track Trailer. The company, Australian-based and located outside Melbourne, has been in business since 1982. Their Tvan model is specially engineered to eliminate the problems found with conventional flip-over type campers (which stow the tent on the bed). With the Tvan, the tent is stowed in the rear hatch allowing your bed to be kept clean and dry. Even better, a hard roof over your head ensures a better night sleep.

As Track is experienced building military trailers, much of their heavy-duty technology finds its way into the Tvan. Features such as an asymmetric link suspension with Koni shock absorbers, 10 inches of wheel travel, and a 30-degree departure angle allow the trailer to follow the tow vehicle over nearly every terrain. With a hot dip galvanized steel frame, it is also built to take abuse and last. Of course, the kitchen appointments are stainless steel with abundant power outlets, lights, and ventilation to take the edge off of roughing it. It even comes with a 70-liter "food grade" water tank as standard equipment. Now, we found you the camper, you just have to figure out how to get it here... unfortunately, the Australian company isn't shipping to the States.

There have been Westys since VW went mostly conventional with the Eurovan, but they're not much of a common sight on US Highways anymore.

Ursa Minor Vehicles understands that all those former kids who took trips to the Grand Canyon in a Westfalia have a soft spot for the poptop. Thus, the Ursa Minor ECamper kit for the Honda Element has been born. For those willing to part with an additional 4,000 bones, they will regain the ability to tilt up the roof again and contort themselves into an upper bunk area. The ECamper does require that the donor Element have a sunroof, which is the access hatch to the 85" x 50" sleeping area under the carbon fiber lid. Options such as color matched paint and roof racks are also available, and Ursa Minor will even sell you a fully outfitted Element if you don't want to tackle the kit. $4,300 is about what it'd cost in parts and labor to fix the head gaskets in your Wasserboxer, again, isn't it?

[Source: Winding Road]

Gallery: Ursa Minor ECamper

Spirit of the VW Camper van goes Element-al originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 04 Feb 2008 10:58:00 EST. While most viewers might have figured out that Jezza and the gang had started the fire intentionally for comedic effect, enough people apparently thought the fire was real that the BBC felt it had to issue a statement saying it was, indeed, faked. Not only was the fire a fake, but Top Gear paid £1000 to have a fire engine and six crew members on standby.

A spokeswoman from the Dorset Fire Service said they were asked to make the incident look real, and so they "treated it as a genuine fire."

It was a typical Top Gear stunt with entertainment outweighing journalistic integrity. Unfortunately, there will always be people who have no sense of humor and who think everything they see on TV or in the media is real. The BBC pointed out that it never misled viewers, "as it was obviously 'slapstick' with a 'sitcom ending'."

Check out the fire clip after the jump.

[Source: PistonHeads]
Continue reading No, really? For our part, we'll tell you why this BMW 1-Series has a severely swollen rear end. The inflatable sphere hanging off the back is called the "Air Camper". According to Winding Road, which discovered the accessory in Intersection Magazine, the UK-based high-fashion mag commissioned BMW to produce the bubble camper in conjunction with the launch of the 1-Series a couple years ago. It sleeps two and is inflated by a low-voltage fan that draws power from the car's cigarette lighter. The add-on magically transforms the 1-Series into the Ultimate Camping Machine, and has the added bonus of hiding the polarizing lines of BMW's Bangle-era rear ends.

[Source: Winding Road]
Think the Bangle Butt is ugly?
