2010 Chevrolet Camaro Indianapolis 500 Pace Car - Click above for high-res image gallery

Some of the most desirable Chevrolet Camaros are the factory-made replicas to celebrate the pony car's inclusion in the racing world as a pace car. And it looks like we have yet another pace car rep to add to our growing list of potential collectibles with General Motors' announcement that it will build 200 or fewer 2010 Chevy Camaro Indianapolis 500 Pace Car Limited Edition models.

Each of the Pace Car models will be based on an SS with the RS appearance package. A 400 horsepower 6.2-liter V8 engine will be mated up with a six-speed automatic transmission (what, no manual?), with power put to the ground through 20-inch polished aluminum wheels. A throwback-style front grille recalls the old '67 Pace Cars, and the whole shebang will be painted in Inferno Orange, including the engine cover.

Now, for the most important bits:
  • Premium floor mats with accent colors
  • 2010 Indianapolis 500 event logo decal on both doors and embroidered on driver and passenger headrests
  • 2010 Indianapolis 500 event logo badges on front fenders
Price? $41,950 (including an $850 Destination Freight Charge). Get the rest of the details in the press release after the break.

Like Bumblebee on his interstellar voyage from Cybertron, the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro has taken years to arrive. If we take the Transformers analogy further (bear with us), the Camaro has landed after a few Decepticons - the Dodge Challenger, Ford Mustang and Nissan 370Z - have already begun staking out territories. More than the others, the Camaro has to justify its place in the battle, while at the same time backing up three years of unrelenting hype.

Once again, Camaro5.com sends in these photos that appear to show the full-scale Camaro model being used by the GM Accessories design studio to test all the factory knick-knacks and bolt-ons that they have in the works. Forget the tease we all got via the upskirt video GM allowed to be filmed -- this shows the full monty.

Here's the quick-and-dirty rundown.
  • 7-spoke wheels
  • RS stripe package (left side of the car)
  • SS stripe package (right side of the car)
  • Grille insert
  • Rear fascia blackout
  • Platform-style rear wing
  • Fuel filler cap
  • 2 possible ground effects kits (see close-up of the rear -- at that point, the clay modeling is "halved")
  • Ducktail spoiler (again, see detail shot -- it's on the right half of the car)
  • Slotted brake discs w/ red calipers
Whatever the final assortment of accessories turns out to be, it would seem that there'll be a very wide selection from which to choose. As for the 5-spoke wheels shown in two of the photos, they look 'shopped on. Whether those are GM photoshops or fan mods is anyone's guess. We're definitely feeling that RS package, though -- with those black 7-spokes, please. Keep that wing, though.

Our second featured Camaro this week is another one from 1967, which, let's face it, was a good year for Camaros. This '67 Camaro SS 396 was purchased for $800 back in 1986 and it's been a personal project of Flickr member BinCali ever since. It was wasting away in a car port that BinCali passed on his way to work every day until that fateful day twenty years ago when he struck up a conversation with the owner that lead to the title transfer. In the 20 years BinCali has owned the Camaro, he's stripped it down to "every last nut bolt," performing all the work on it himself except the paint. The 396 motor actually displaces 402ci now, while BinCali has worked to restore other items of the car, like the interior and the exhaust, to their original factory specs. As if the Camaro weren't enough to impress this crowd, the car in the background is an ultra rare right-hand drive 1971 Holden Monaro GTS, one of about five in the United States. It makes us wonder what else is in BinCali's garage.
