Chevrolet handed over the keys to 33 Hot Wheels Camaro Convertible Indianapolis 500 festival cars this week. Race directors get the luxury of driving the droptops around Indianapolis in an ongoing tradition with roots all the way back to the 1960s. The stunt is supposed to remind area residents that the Indy 500 is right around the corner. The cars are our first look at the special Camaro Hot Wheels Edition in convertible form, and they are slated to head to dealers after a one-time production run. The cars also represent the first time in history full-size Hot Wheels have been offered for sale by an automaker.

The cars will be available in both the previously seen coupe bodystyle and this convertible configuration, and will feature metallic blue paint and special wheels with the iconic redline accent. Buyers will be able to choose between the V6-powered 2LT trim and the V8-powered 2SS guise.

Hot Wheels says the original Custom Camaro toy was one of the original 16 1:64-scale diecasts, and it remains one of the company's most valuable collector items today.
Hot Wheels Camaro to make big debut at Indy originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 05 Apr 2013 13:45:00 EST.
Remember when there was a bit of consternation among the Bowtie faithful after Chevrolet introduced the Camaro ZL1? The issue wasn't around the big coupe's awesome performance, it was with the name - many wondered why the company hadn't chosen to exhume the company's legendary Z/28 moniker. There was a bit less of an outcry when Chevy showed off the 1LE model, but only just. Well, apparently there's a good reason why the Z/28 nameplate wasn't used - because they were saving it for this bad boy.

Powered by Chevrolet's 7.0-liter LS7 small block V8 (also found in the C6 Corvette), the 2014 Camaro Z/28 looks to offer massive track performance above and beyond the already capable 1LE. Chevy hasn't released official power ratings yet, saying only that the Z/28 will deliver "at least 500 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque" - the supercharged 6.2-liter LSA found in the ZL1 dispenses 580 horsepower, so the track-focused Z/28 probably won't be the most powerful Camaro on offer.

Perhaps more importantly, curb weight is down 300 pounds compared to the ZL1 thanks to a comprehensive lightweighting program, including thinner rear glass and lighter wheels and making air conditioning an option. Chevy says that the weight cut and the institution of substantial chassis and braking changes are good enough to cut a whopping three seconds per lap off of the ZL1's times, though it hasn't specified what circuit it has been tested on.

Aero changes include a whopper of a front splitter tied to a lift-curbing undertray, along with flared fenders and rocker extensions. Out back, a unique spoiler and diffuser help keep the massive meats planted to the ground at high speeds.

Inside, the manual-transmission-only Z/28 gets the ZL1's excellent flat-bottomed wheel and standard Recaro seats (already optional on SS and ZL1 models). The interior is finished in a matte-metallic finish dubbed Octane. Pricing has yet to be announced, but for all the details, scroll down to look at the lengthy official press release and to watch the car's live unveiling. We recommend fast-forwarding to the 8:55 mark to hear the Z/28 get fired up.
Continue reading 2014 Chevy Camaro Z/28 is back!
The Poncho is dead. Long live the Poncho. Like certain other reoccurring personal maladies, the aftermarket community simply can't let the Trans Am go without another flare up. The guys at Trans Am Depot have worked up a quick commercial for their newest creation: The 2013 Trans Am Hurst Edition, and it watches pretty much like you'd expect it to. The footage is comprised of just about every TA male fantasy you can conceive of, from Daisy Dukes and white tank tops to tramp stamps, bikinis and ice cream cones. There simply aren't words for what you'll see below.

Of course, we like our T-Tops as much as the next guy. If you like what you see in the videos, you can pick up your very own TA by heading over to the Trans Am Depot site. The guys even have Chevrolet Camaro-based versions of the Pontiac GTO if the '77 TA treatment is too much for your tastes. Enjoy, but don't say we didn't warn you.

Continue reading Check out the official 2013 Trans Am Hurst Edition commercial

Check out the official 2013 Trans Am Hurst Edition commercial originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 16 Mar 2013 19:01:00 EST.
Full Disclosure: in my younger days, I loved nothing more than tormenting passengers with my behind-the-wheel hijinks. Once, after a particularly artful handbrake turn on a two-lane at around 50 miles per hour, I left one backseat occupant crying in their own lap. This isn't necessarily something to be proud of, but it gives you a glimpse into why it is that I find this ad from Pepsi so damn disappointing. The premise is beautiful. Take NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon, give him a disguise and set him loose upon some unsuspecting used car dealer. Hilarity ensues.

Except that this Pepsi Max commercial is so obviously staged, it can't help but feel like some ham-fisted marketing fail. From the strategically placed aftermarket cupholder mounted mid-dash for the hidden camera to the fact that the supposed dealer Camaro is displayed as a 2009 model (Hint: Chevrolet didn't make any), this clip is about as organic as a Twinkie. Still, we would never turn down a chance to watch Gordon thrash on a rental-spec coupe - only problem is, he probably didn't even do the driving himself. Check it out below.
Continue reading Watch NASCAR racer Jeff Gordon put one over on a used car dealer... sorta

Watch NASCAR racer Jeff Gordon put one over on a used car dealer... sorta originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 13 Mar 2013 12:57:00 EST. Ditching the superchargers, the 2013 COPO Camaro can only be equipped with one of three naturally aspirated V8 engines, and other new features include the option of a manual transmission, new front springs, some minor styling changes and a lower starting price of $86,000. All cars are designed to abide by the rules of the NHRA's Stock Eliminator or Super Stock classifications, depending on in which series buyers wish to enter their Chevrolet Camaro.

Returning for 2013 is the 427-cubic-inch V8 producing 425 horsepower, but the new engines include a 325-hp 350-CID V8 and a 375-hp 396-CID V8. Buyers can select to purchase all three engines, and each will be matched with the sequence number of that car; the track-only COPO cars will not have vehicle identification numbers and can't be registered for street use.

Chevrolet is also offering unique enthusiast-specific options such as a COPO Build Book and the opportunity for owners to help assemble their car's engine at the Chevrolet Performance Build Center in Wixom, MI.

Like last year's model and the original COPO Camaro from 1969, only 69 of these cars are being built. If you want the chance at getting your hands on one of these rare Camaros, today is the last day to make your purchase intention known (by visiting chevroletperformance.com) before a third-party company randomly selects available buyers. Those chosen to purchase a COPO Camaro will be contacted on March 11. General Motors says that more than 3,000 people showed interest in the 69 cars built for 2012. More information about the new COPO Camaro is posted in a press release below.
Continue reading 2013 Chevy COPO Camaro announced with two new engines and manual option

2013 Chevy COPO Camaro announced with two new engines and manual option originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 07 Mar 2013 18:28:00 EST.
We've already seen leaked specs and potential spy shots, but the refreshed 2014 Chevrolet Camaro will make its official debut at the New York Auto Show in a few weeks.

Besides a tweaked exterior and the possibility of a high-output LS7 under the hood, we really don't know much else about the 2014 Camaro, but here's hoping for an improved interior, too.

In addition to the refreshed Camaro, Chevrolet will also be showing off the recently introduced Chevrolet SS, making its debut on the auto show circuit, and we'll also get our first look at the C7 Corvette coupe and convertible side-by-side.

General Motors will round out its major introductions with the redesigned 2014 Cadillac CTS and the updated 2014 Buick LaCrosse and 2014 Regal.
For a concept car built to promote an animated movie about a snail that wants to go racing, this thing ain't half bad. The outsized monster you see before you started life as a Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, and then went through a big-time Hollywood makeover before being positioned on the Chevrolet stand here in Chicago.

This 2013 "Turbo" Camaro Coupe is getting the promotion machine ratcheted up for a new DreamWorks tale by the name of, you guessed it, Turbo. Coming this summer, the movie will follow one snail's quest to become a race driver worthy of making the cut at the Indy 500. Like many DreamWorks vehicles before it, we're guessing that the petrolhead snail will star in a movie that adults (especially racing fans) with have no trouble watching with their kids. Check out the trailer below to see if you agree.

As for the car, we're told that it is "instrumental" in transforming Turbo from snail into racer. Helping the beastly pony car in this mighty task, is an ankle-cracking front splitter matched by a ungodly huge rear wing out back, a COPO hood and a supercharged (yes, supercharged) V8 engine making more than 700 horsepower. 24-inch wheels all the way around - 10-inches wide in front and 15-inches wide in back - should allow the "Turbo" Camaro to hook up with ease, as well.

It looks like there some changes in store for the Chevrolet Camaro - the only thing is that we just don't know what Chevy has up its sleeve. Looking at these spy shots, we'd initially be inclined to think that there is just a minor facelift or a new special edition, but upon closer inspection, there are a few oddities about this car that definitely have us intrigued.

The most obvious difference on this prototype is the slightly restyled front fascia with a smaller lower air inlet and the two-bar grille. Then we get to some of the car's mysterious details. For starters, this fascia has the SS vent above the grille, but it looks to be blocked off. Granted this could just be a one-off piece used for testing. What really piqued our interest was at the rear of the car where it has quad exhaust outlets that are used on the ZL1. Could this be the LS7-powered Camaro that we reported on back in December?

At this point, your guess is as good as ours as to what we're looking at here, so let us know in the comments what you think this could be.
Camaro spy shots show subtly different grille, front fascia originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 03 Feb 2013 11:03:00 EST.
Hagerty Insurance, which specializes in covering cars already deemed classics, is out with its annual Hot List predicting this year's ten cars that will be future collectibles. Even though it stays under $100,000, it spans almost $74,000 in MSRPs starting with the $23,700 Ford Focus ST on the affordable end and peaking with the $97,395 SRT Viper.

Other notables include the Chevrolet Corvette Convertible 427, what with 2013 being both the 60th anniversary of the brand and the last year of the C6, the 505-horsepower 427 special edition being a send-off to the sports car that always does well in the last model year of a particular generation. The Tesla Model S collects yet another award for delivering a welcome and overdue shock to the electric-car game and is the only sedan to make the list, and the Subaru BRZ also adds to its trophy chest, the lightweight coupe doing so much with so little that it might be worth a packet after Father Time has waved his staff a few times.

You can check out the rest of Hagerty's picks in the press release below.
Continue reading Hagerty predicts this year's future classics

Hagerty predicts this year's future classics originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 31 Jan 2013 17:59:00 EST.
Four different General Motors vehicles from the 2012 model year are being recalled over a potential airbag issue. The driver's side airbag shorting bar in the 2012 Buick Verano and 2012 Chevrolet Camaro, Cruze and Sonic might make contact with the airbag terminals, even during a crash. If so, the airbag won't deploy when it should, possibly increasing injury to the driver.

The recall is expected to begin on February 13 for the 3,896 units that might be affected. GM will notify owners who can then take their vehicles to dealers to have the airbag coil replaced. A bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration below has more info.
Continue reading GM recalling nearly 4,000 vehicles over airbag concerns

GM recalling nearly 4,000 vehicles over airbag concerns originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 31 Jan 2013 13:31:00 EST.
Back at the 2012 SEMA event in Las Vegas, Chevrolet unveiled the car you see above, a 2012 Chevrolet Camaro COPO Convertible. Actually, that's not quite accurate - this car is THE 2012 Chevrolet Camaro COPO Convertible. As in, the only one ever sold. There was one more produced, but it's not leaving the GM Heritage Center any time soon. This one was just sold at Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale for $400,000 exactly.

That sum will be donated to the American Heart Association, and the winner will take home this Inferno Orange Metallic COPO, complete with a 327-cubic-inch V8 topped by a 4.0-liter supercharger. The engine sends 550 horsepower to the rear drag slicks through a three-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. Perfect for a run down the quarter mile, top-down style.

Check out our high-res image gallery from the block at Barrett-Jackson above, and don't forget to watch a video of the COPO being auctioned below, along with the car's official auction description. And don't forget to play along with the crowd at the Hagerty Fantasy Bid game online for a chance to win a custom 2013 Shelby GT500.
Continue reading Chevrolet Camaro COPO Convertible jumps from SEMA to Barrett-Jackson, pockets $400k for charity [w/video]

Chevrolet Camaro COPO Convertible jumps from SEMA to Barrett-Jackson, pockets $400k for charity [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 19 Jan 2013 17:10:00 EST.
As we continue to put together all the data for the year-end edition of By The Numbers, General Motors has announced that it sold more than a million vehicles in the US last year that achieved at least 30 miles per gallon on the highway. More impressively, GM managed this feat using multiple strategies including small vehicle size, turbocharged engines and hybrid or plug-in technologies across four brands (Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC) accounting for 13 separate models. This number will grow even more in 2013 thanks to cars like the all-electric Spark, the diesel Cruze, the range-extended Cadillac ELR and the Buick Encore compact CUV.

GM's small car sales were up 39 percent last year helping to attain this million-sales mark for 30-mpg models, and almost 40 percent of all GM sales consisted of cars with fuel-efficient I4 engines. In regards to more advanced means of improving fuel economy, GM says that it plans on having 500,000 vehicles with "some form of electrification" on the road by 2017.

We're piecing this together as best we can from the original Japanese with the help of Google Translate, but it seems Chevrolet is headed to the Tokyo Auto Salon with three special vehicles. Embracing the customization of American metal through the themes of cool, fun and freedom, the showpiece will be a Camaro Giovanna Edition but there's no information on it. Based on its name, though, we would not be shocked if it's fitted with Giovanna aftermarket wheels.

It will be joined by the Chevrolet Captiva Freedom Rider in Carbon Flash Metallic hue and the Chevrolet Sonic Street Icon Package in red. The "stylish and playful" Sonic is all about skateboarders and "the street generation," while the Captiva works the two-wheeled crowd with its Thule bike rack and painted-to-match bicycle.

The Salon goes down from January 11-13. We'll be looking forward to that Camaro and to see whether that Captiva grille really is as meshtastic as it looks in the above picture.
Chevrolet headed to Tokyo Auto Salon with Sonic, Captiva concepts originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 02 Jan 2013 13:31:00 EST.
Just when we thought that the horsepower battle between Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro had reached its zenith with the 662-horsepower Shelby GT500, it appears that Chevrolet won't go down without a fight. Based on an official-looking Vehicle Identification Number decoder (click the above image to enlarge) that Camaro5 managed to get its hands on, the 2014 Camaro might be getting ready to receive a few tweaks under the hood.

The biggest news is that an LS7 V8 engine looks to be joining the Camaro family for the 2014 model year. The 7.0-liter LS7 is currently used in the Corvette Z06 with a power rating of 505 hp and 470 pound-feet of torque, which is much less power than the supercharged 6.2-liter LSA V8 used in the Camaro ZL1 putting out 580 hp and 556 lb.-ft. Interestingly, though, there are no new trim level listed on the detailed sheet, suggesting this engine could be destined to find its way into one of the Camaro's existing model, though a few months ago, it was reported that GM filed trademark papers for the Z/28 moniker, a storied designation in Camaro history.

On the opposite end of the performance spectrum, the decoder also appears to indicate that the Camaro's base 3.6-liter V6 will become E85 capable. We'll wait until we hear official word from General Motors on either regard to get too excited, but both are promising leads for Camaro fans. Combined with this week's news that next-generation Camaro production will be shifting from Oshawa, Ontario to Lansing, MI, this has been a surprising eventful week for Chevy's ponycar.
2014 Chevrolet Camaro to be available with LS7 V8? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 21 Dec 2012 14:15:00 EST.
General Motors has announced that the next generation of the Chevrolet Camaro will once again be built in the United States, specifically at the Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant in Lansing, MI. The current Camaro has been assembled in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, since its introduction in 2010.

The automaker cites "lower capital investment and improved production efficiencies" as key reasons for the move - indeed, the Camaro is the only rear-wheel-drive vehicle made in Oshawa; the Buick Regal and Cadillac XTS are currently manufactured there, and the upcoming Chevrolet Impala will join the front-wheel-drive group in 2013. Meanwhile, the Lansing facility currently produces two rear-wheel-drive vehicles - the Cadillac ATS and CTS - which makes the Camaro a natural fit.

The Canadian Auto Workers Union is, as expected, none too pleased by the "callous and poorly thought-out" announcement, "reacting in anger and frustration" according to a statement. CAW National President Ken Lewenza added, "General Motors has once again shown a complete and utter disregard for its workers and also Canadians in general, whose tax dollars kept the company out of bankruptcy."

The CAW says that "GM must replace lost Camaro production on a one-to-one basis." The automaker's own statement says it will "continue to meet the production targets agreed to with the Canadian and Ontario governments during the 2009 restructuring." In any case, production of the current Camaro will continue in Ontario until the next-gen model is ready to go on sale sometime within the next few years.

Forgiato is a well-known maker of custom wheels to fit just about any taste (and budget), but the company also makes other parts to trick your car out. For Chevrolet Camaro owners, Forgiato has designed the DiFalco grille to include hidden headlights somewhat reminiscent of what was available on first-gen Camaros.

From what we can see in the images, the mesh grille and motorized headlight covers go over the stock parts, and when closed, each "eyelid" also has 18 LEDs that can light up for a unique effect. Priced at $3,399, the DiFalco grille doesn't come cheap, but judging by the other upgrades made to this wide-body Camaro show car, we're sure this is just a drop in the bucket.

Check out the (questionably safe for work) video after the jump showing a few brief glimpses at the trick headlights mixed in with two minutes of a scantily-clad woman hanging out by a pool and an autonomous Camaro not named Bumblebee.
Continue reading Forgiato brings hidden headlamps back to the Chevy Camaro [w/video]

Forgiato brings hidden headlamps back to the Chevy Camaro [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 08 Dec 2012 19:07:00 EST.
NASCAR driver Tony Stewart is known as "Smoke" to many, and the custom Camaro ZL1 he helped create for SEMA reflects his sometimes mysterious personality. Chevy design manager Dave Ross worked with Stewart to come up with not only the flat red and silver tribal theme, but the custom gray-metallic paint and the red-haloed headlights, as well.

The interior gets seats embroidered with Tony Stewart signatures, suede door panels, French-stitched black leather armrests and piano black trim plates and gauge bezel. The large wheels are custom-designed with a piano black finish and just a touch of red on the spokes.

Underhood lies the 6.2L supercharged LSA engine with enough power to turn the rear tires to billowing clouds of small rubber particles. The engine is factory fresh but handily uses its 580 horses to make a 0-60 run in four seconds with a top-out speed of 184 miles per hour.

For the host of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Chevy cooked up a delectable Corvette 427 Convertible Collector Edition. An avid Camaro fan, spiky-haired Guy Fieri already owns 1968 and 2011 Camaro SS convertibles in matching yellow and black. His new Corvette, however, twists that color scheme for a black with yellow stripes getup accented by the blacked-out 19-inch wheels in front and 20s in back with matching yellow calipers. Stunning would be the correct adjective, and GM should definitely put the package on its menu.
Continue reading Chevy cooks up custom Camaro, Corvette for "Smoke," Fieri

Chevy cooks up custom Camaro, Corvette for "Smoke," Fieri originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 01 Nov 2012 18:42:00 EST.
Following the well-received concept version of the Lingenfelter LTA at SEMA all the way back in 2009, the specialist tuning company has finally brought along a production version of the car this year. Surprise... it's a convertible!

Ken Lingenfelter himself says that "overwhelming response after displaying conceptual versions of the LTA at previous SEMA Shows" has forced the company to offer up the real deal. Great news for enthusiasts of retro-themed performance cars, and Camaro fans in general.

Each LTA begins life as a model year 2010-2013 Camaro (including convertibles, obviously) and is then modified completely by Lingenfelter. The company will not be selling pieces of the body kit, for instance, as separate pieces. Lingenfelter will only deliver "...a complete, finished vehicle that's been re-done inside and out."

The LTA will be available in three grades, though the Level 3 LTA seen here would seem to be the one to have. This package includes a V8 engine tuned to produce some 655 horsepower, Brembo brakes, 20-inch "Honeycomb" wheels and a completely custom interior.
Continue reading Production-ready Lingenfelter LTA Camaro debuts in Vegas

Production-ready Lingenfelter LTA Camaro debuts in Vegas originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 31 Oct 2012 15:19:00 EST.
It seems the Pontiac Trans Am steadfastly refuses to die. Ever since Chevrolet was granted a retrofied Camaro to compete with the Ford Mustang, Pontiac lovers have lamented the loss of this 1970s icon. And, looking at the Hurst Edition from Trans Am Depot, shown here at the 2012 SEMA Show, may explain what all the fuss is about.

It's not going to appeal to everyone's muscle-car tastes, but there's certainly room for a brash-and-bold black-and-gold Special Edition in many a Trans Am lover's garage. After all, if you want the keys to a custom pony car, you'll certainly get noticed in this one. If this scheme isn't your bag,, you can alternatively order your Hurst Edition in white and gold or silver and black. Oh, and don't forget a color-coordinated Screaming Chicken on the hood.

No matter which way you choose to go, your inner Burt Reynolds will appreciate the Eibach suspension kit, forged wheels with Pirelli PZero tires, functional shaker hood, fender air extractors, rear spoiler and, of course, a Hurst shifter inside. The interior is emblazoned with all manner of special touches, including a Hurst dash plate and T/A stitching on the Katzkin two-tone leather seats.

Optional bits include T-Tops, which you simply must include, a supercharger or twin-turbo package and just about anything else your black-and-gold heart desires.
Many a lifetime of car-love has started with a single Hot Wheels model. The diecast cars gave us early access to dreamy metal that we might not otherwise ever see, along with crazy versions of vehicles that we already knew and loved.

The brand offers a perfect fit for the likes of the Chevrolet Camaro, then, as the model's throwback-meets-modern looks and enthusiast driver-appeal already speak to the young at heart.

Red-accented, chunky five-spoke wheels set off this rather electrically blue paintjob (it's actually called Kinetic Blue, but you get the idea), and Hot Wheels badging completes the grownup-toy vibe. The best part is that, as we reported earlier, this Hot Wheels Camaro will be a model that you can actually buy, albeit for a hefty price. Get a better look in our live image gallery above.
Chevy Camaro Hot Wheels Edition is not kidding around originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 30 Oct 2012 16:40:00 EST.
