It's been a while since Cadillac had a roadster in its product portfolio. Since the XLR went out of production at the end of 2009, to be precise. But while the CTS Coupe (and its high-performance counterpart, the CTS-V Coupe) may fill the niche for a svelte wreath-badged two-door, Cadillac may be planning on something a little more windy - and more affordable - in the near future.

According to our compatriots over at Inside Line, Cadillac is considering spinning a two-seat roadster off the rear-wheel-drive platform of the new ATS sedan. If given the green light, the ATS roadster would likely be positioned squarely at the likes of the Mercedes-Benz SLK and BMW Z4, maximizing the use of the ATS platform while giving The General a potentially intriguing rival to its German competitors.
Cadillac may build two-seat roadster off ATS originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Jan 2012 17:00:00 EST.
The BMW 3 Series has dominated the small luxury segment for decades, and it's easy to understand why. The 3 Series has consistently delivered best-in-class driving dynamics in spite of the competition having over 20 years to play catch-up.

Enter the hotly anticipated 2013 Cadillac ATS. In many ways, it mimics the larger CTS, but with some softer lines up front and along the flanks. The headlamps flow all the way back to the mid-point of the front wheel wells. The rear end employs the trademark Cadillac vertical tail lamps, plus a pair of inset exhaust tips.

There's little doubt that the ATS is gunning for the 3 Series, and Cadillac is confident that its new sports sedan is a real pavement slicer. The car's development included plenty of time on the Nurburgring, it boasts nearly 50/50 weight balance, and it features a five-link independent rear suspension, a first for the Cadillac brand. The ATS tips the scales at 3,400 pounds, slightly more than the 3,362-pound BMW 328i sedan. The ATS is also the same exact height as the Bimmer, the wheelbase is within a few tenths of an inch, and the Caddy is about one inch wider.

Inside, the ATS really steps up its game, with eye-catching color combinations and a choice of real wood or carbon fiber accents. The ATS also features cut-and-sew stitching on the dash and seats, and what appear to be materials that are a step up from the larger CTS. Among the available features are performance seats that offer adjustable side bolstering.

The ATS also features Cadillac's new CUE technology, which offers Bluetooth, USB, auxiliary inputs and a slot for an SD card. CUE also incorporates an eight-inch LCD touchscreen, which opens up to reveal a large storage area. There's also a 5.7-inch display nestled inside the gauge cluster, a color heads-up display, and push-button start.

Power is critical in this segment, and the ATS features three engine offerings. The base model uses GM's all-new 2.5-liter four-cylinder generating an estimated 200 horsepower at 6,200 RPM and 188 pound-feet of torque at 4,500 PRM. The up-level 2.0-liter turbo four might be the most interesting choice, with 270 horses at 5,300 RPM and 260 lb-ft at just 2,400 RPM. The top engine is the familiar 3.6-liter V6, which offers 318 horsepower at 6,800 RPM and 267 pound-feet of torque at 4,900 RPM. The 3.6 and the 2.5 run on regular unleaded, while premium is recommended for the 2.0 turbo. Transmission choices include a Tremec M3L TR3160 six-speed manual and a Hydra-Matic 6L45 six-speed automatic.

Cadillac hasn't released pricing or fuel economy numbers yet; we're expecting those closer to the ATS's summer launch. Hit the jump to read over the Cadillac press release, and peruse the high-res images in the gallery above.
Continue reading 2013 Cadillac ATS prepares to take on the 3 Series

2013 Cadillac ATS prepares to take on the 3 Series originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 08 Jan 2012 14:15:00 EST.
General Motors has released the third installment of the company's mini web series on the Cadillac ATS and its development at the Nürburgring. The latest video takes us around the infamous German track with Adam Dean, Cadillac ride and handling engineer, behind the wheel. Dean gives us an in-depth look at what's like to sling the new baby Cadillac around one of the world's most challenging road courses at speed. We can't imagine too many ATS buyers will be caning their sedan around a race track, but it's good to know the vehicle can hold its own just the same.

Will GM's efforts on Green Hell help the ATS take on hardware from BMW and Mercedes-Benz? We'll just have to wait to find out. Word has it the vehicle will debut with the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that will eventually show up in the likes of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu and next-generation Chevrolet Impala. The lump should produce somewhere between 270 and 280 horsepower. That should be plenty for a small luxury sedan. Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself.
Continue reading Cadillac ATS gets tuned at the 'Ring

Cadillac ATS gets tuned at the 'Ring originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 19 Dec 2011 10:33:00 EST.
General Motors casts quite a shadow over the annual Detroit Auto Show. First of all, their Renaissance Center headquarters are right next to Cobo Hall where the show is held every year. But beyond that, GM never fails to bring a big spread to its hometown expo. And this year looks to be no exception.

Some of the debuts slated for The General's still-vast portfolio of divisions will be expected - like the Chevrolet Sonic RS and Cadillac ATS, both production vehicles that are slated to debut at the show. But details on others we'll have to wait for. For one, Buick will unveil a new production crossover utility vehicle. Sources expect it to be smaller than the Enclave (which shouldn't be too difficult) and possibly bear the Encore name, which kind of gives us the jibblies.

Chevy is also slated to roll out two concept cars from the GM North Hollywood Design Center. We'll be watching out for details on all the Detroit debuts, so watch this space for more.
GM to showcase two Chevy concepts, new Buick crossover in Detroit originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Dec 2011 16:30:00 EST.
We just wrapped up our first hands-on with Cadillac CUE, the luxury automaker's attempt at a modern, fully-integrated infotainment system for the upcoming XTS, ATS and refreshed SRX.

First impressions are favorable, although in its current form the system is still very beta in both execution and response. However, the core tenants of the system - a capacitive screen with multitouch control and proximity sensors, capacitive center stack buttons and a configurable instrument panel - are all functional and incredibly slick, despite some slow responses and awkward transitions.

Cadillac's electronics and HMI team have been working on CUE for the better part of four years and their efforts show. And with daily builds of the system being developed and deployed, they're well on their way to having the system ready for prime time when the XTS arrives early next year.
Cadillac took some time last month to put the upcoming ATS through its paces at the Nürburgring as part of the vehicle's final development, and the company brought along a video crew to share the experience with the desk jockeys of the world.

The video after the jump is the first in a series orbiting around the newest model from Cadillac and its experience in Germany. We have to say that the machine looks plenty spritely busting through the apexes of the Nürburgring. Judging by the soundtrack, we'd say the four-door is rocking a well-exercised V6 under the hood.

That runs contrary to rumors that indicated that the ATS would arrive with a turbo four behind the headlights, though there's nothing saying that a smaller displacement option isn't still on the table. Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself, and head over to the Cadillac Facebook page for more information on the upcoming clips.
Continue reading What the Cadillac ATS did on its summer vacation [w/video]

What the Cadillac ATS did on its summer vacation [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 11 Oct 2011 19:28:00 EST.
GM Inside News reports that General Motors is working on a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine for the Cadillac ATS. The small-displacement engine is expected to produce between 270 and 280 horsepower. Those are impressive figures, though there's no indication as to whether or not the engine will require premium fuel.

If true, the engine's introduction only stokes the rumors indicating that GM is walking away from V6 drivetrain options in its mid-size offerings altogether. Automakers like Kia and Hyundai have already abandoned the six, allowing those companies to produce lighter, more efficient sedans that are just as powerful as their V6 competition.

GMI says that the new 2.0-liter will be cut from the same cloth as the 2.5-liter Ecotec four-cylinder that GM recently unveiled in the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu. In other words, while it may borrow some tricks from the turbo 2.0-liter lump that powers the Buick Regal GS, it will by and large be its own beast.
GM readying 2.0-liter turbo four for Cadillac ATS? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 06 Oct 2011 09:59:00 EST.
Cadillac is going to keep things classy with its upcoming ATS. The top will stay on, which means the lineup will lose the planned convertible version but retain the sedan and coupe.

What's the motivation for the drop-top rejection? Volume projections. Cadillac doesn't see enough convertible fans stepping up with cash to support the production of an ATS convertible.

The sedan is still on track to arrive in dealerships during the summer of 2012. Rumor has it that the coupe is slated to arrive a few years later as a 2015 model. Regardless, we're eagerly awaiting word on what the V versions will pack under their hoods.
Cadillac ATS convertible scuttled originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 28 Sep 2011 15:30:00 EST.
Cadillac is getting ready to launch into a segment of the automotive market that's already rife with serious competition. The upcoming Cadillac ATS will do battle with the likes of the Acura TL, Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Infiniti G, Lexus IS and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, among others. Simply put, it will need to be a very good car to gain the attention of those who shop in this segment.

To that end, General Motors appears to be doing an awful lot of evaluation testing with the ATS, making it that much easier for our spy photographers to catch the company's engineers testing the camo-clad prototype seen above. This particular brand of shape-masking is quite effective, and it's hard to pull out any solid hint of what's going on underneath. Still, we expect the angular source to resemble a baby CTS (which itself will grow in size) with a few tugs on the sheetmetal that the ATS can claim as its own.
Spy Shots: 2013 Cadillac ATS sheds cladding, gains swirls originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Sep 2011 15:59:00 EST. Episode #242 of the Autoblog Podcast is here. This week, Chris and Dan are joined by John McElroy, long-time host of Autoline Detroit, Autoblog columnist and a fixture to listeners of WWJ. We start by getting our supercar fix, mulling the Pagani Huyara and its eventual move to the U.S. market. From there, we bring some informed analysis to General Motors regaining the largest automaker crown from Toyota and discuss the newly-confirmed Cadillac XTS and ATS. Your questions and comments power the last third of the podcast, and for those of you who hung with us live on our UStream channel, thanks for taking the time. We've embedded our Q&A module after the jump for you to scroll through and follow along, too. Thanks for listening!

Cadillac has made it clear it plans to enter the rarified air generally reserved for such finely tuned machinery as the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class with the same verve and gusto it's done with its CTS. And the vehicle it hopes will earn them entrance into the hotly contested market is the upcoming ATS.

We know General Motors will attack the small end of the premium market with a multi-tiered approach, including engines packing four, six or eight cylinders. A new document that surfaced on Cheers & Gears seems to indicate just such an approach, culminating in a fire-breathing ATS-V with a 6.2-liter pushrod V8 engine sending 470 horsepower and 438 pound-feet of torque through either a six-speed automatic or manual gearbox.

Moving down a notch will reportedly get you the same 3.6-liter direct injected V6 engine that powers the bulk of Caddy's CTS models; 330 horses and 280 lb-ft will be routed through an eight-speed automatic transmission. According to the supposed spec sheet, that combo should net 20 miles per gallon in the city and 30 on the highway using regular-grade gas.

Finally, the rumormill swirls with talk that a turbocharged four cylinder displacing 2.0 liters and putting out 270 horsepower and 250 lb-ft will serve as the base engine for the ATS, mated up to an eight-speed automatic. Naturally, that combo will serve as the fuel mileage leader, managing an estimated 22 city/32 highway rating, though it's likely to require premium gas.

Certainly, all of this information is to be taken with a suitably sized grain of salt (mayhaps the whole shaker?), but it is in line with what we've been hearing for the last year or so. In any case, we ought to find out all the details in due time - Cadillac's ATS is expected to hit the market no later than the latter half of 2013 as a 2014 model.

GM is investing heavily in its Grand River Assembly plant. Recently, the automaker announced it's pouring $190 million into the Lansing, Michigan facility, and one of the models expected to be built there is the upcoming Cadillac ATS. The ATS will slot below the CTS and will be built in a range of body-styles. According to GM Inside News, the ATS will first be launched as a sedan, with a coupe and convertible to follow behind. Eventually, a V-Series version will also be produced.

GM Inside News also reports that they have verified a timetable for the release of the ATS variations. The sedan will be released in the fall of 2012, as a 2013 model. Nine months later, a two-door will be made available as a 2014 ATS model. Another nine months after that and a convertible ATS will hit the streets. And of course we'll get to see a 2015 ATS-V as well.

Rumor has it that the ATS will be available with a wide range of engine options, starting with a naturally-aspirated four-cylinder that will be standard, while the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a V6 will also be offered. For the V-Series, it's been said that Cadillac will stick with the V8 formula and shove an eight-cylinder unit under the hood of the ATS.

We now know exactly where General Motors will build its new small Cadillac. The company has announced that it will be investing $190 million into its Grand River Assembly facility in Lansing, Michigan so that the plant can produce the ATS. The company says that the move will provide work for around 600 people, though at this point, it's unclear whether those workers are in addition to the 1,133 workers currently employed at the facility. Right now, the plant builds six models, including all of the variants of the CTS as well as the SRX.

The Grand River Assembly announcement is only the latest in a series of investments that GM has announced for a slew of plants in Michigan. Thanks to some generous tax breaks from the Michigan Economic Growth Authority, the automaker has promised to put money into a new battery facility in Warren, and the company's Delta Township Assembly plant is slated for an additional $37 million in upgrades as well.

Look what the spies have caught. Fresh from our time in the nothing-else-looks-like-it Cadillac CTS Coupe, comes these furtive shots of what we think is the upcoming Cadillac ATS. We've heard different rumors, but the dedicated BMW 3 Series fighter will either show up in 2013 as a 2014 model, or 2014 for the 2015 model year. Whenever it shows up, the ATS will be riding on a smaller version of GM's new/upcoming Alpha platform, the same basic RWD chassis that will also underpin the third generation CTS as well as the next Chevy Camaro.

We've taken a long, hard look at these spy shots, and have concluded that whatever sits under the CTS shell has had its wheelbase shrunk, leading us to believe this is in fact an ATS mule. The wheels are far too close to the passenger compartment. The other giveaway are the two places to insert fuel. At first we thought perhaps this is an XTS prototype and that the second orifice was (maybe) because of the new big Caddy's plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain. However, we think the vestigial door in the photographs is actually there because of the shortened chassis of the ATS. Also, GM will be placing PHEV plugs on the driver's side for convenience. We've also heard nothing about an ATS PHEV, though an ATS Hybrid has been rumored.

As for the mule in these pictures, here's hoping whatever's under there is worthy of all six ducks.
GM has had a hard time finding customers willing to part ways with $10,000 or more for a fully capable SUV with sedan-like city fuel economy, but that reportedly isn't stopping the Detroit, MI-based automaker from improving its hybrid formula for its next generation of vehicles. GM is said to be working on a new electric motor that will reportedly shrink in size by 25 percent while increasing power by 20 percent. These smaller, more powerful motors will reportedly help The General put its hybrid tech in even smaller vehicles.

Automotive News reports that Tom Stephens, GM's vice chairman of global product operations, told reporters that the company's next two-mode setup will be lighter and more affordable when it hits the streets in 2013. The system will reportedly still be available for SUVs and trucks, but Stephens says the system will also be available in rear-drive cars. Jim Hall of 2953 Analytics reportedly told AN that the easy money is on Cadillac getting the upgraded Two-Mode tech, with the next generation CTS and the ATS as the best bets to include the hybrid powertrain.

Given the fact that Cadillacs command a higher price tag, we're thinking that the Wreath and Crest is a good place to start if the automaker ever wants to make a profit off of a full hybrid vehicle. And with the STS likely to go away before 2013, we're thinking the CTS and ATS could be the only rear-drive Caddy sedans by the time 2013 rolls around. It can't hurt that the ATS and the next CTS will share the same platform either, making it easier/cheaper to add Two-Mode tech to both vehicles.

The fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro has been on the road for less than a year in production form, but, according to Motor Trend, General Motors is already considering a followup act. The current model is based on GM's Zeta rear-wheel drive platform that was developed by Holden in Australia. While the Zeta cars, the Camaro and the late Pontiac G8, have generally been praised for their dynamics, they are not perfect. The platform is heavy and many of the originally anticipated additional applications have not materialized, raising the per vehicle cost in the process.

Last summer in the wake of bankruptcy, GM showed off many of its upcoming vehicles to members of the media, including a new smaller Cadillac dubbed ATS. The ATS rides on a new rear-wheel drive platform that has been referred to as Alpha. GM didn't disclose exactly what they were calling the ATS platform, but they did tell us that it would be shared with the next-generation CTS which will likely grow a bit to better compete with the BMW 5 Series. Given the economics of building cars and the volumes expected for both the Cadillacs and the Camaro, it makes sense that the Camaro would move over to the Alpha architecture. One of the goals for all three models will be reduced mass, necessary to meet new fuel economy standards and improve performance.

Cadillac is in the midst of a renaissance. Again. Still. The 2008 CTS paved the way, the Converj is set to follow, and the XTS is set to put the stodgy old Seville and Deville to rest. But Caddy's also preparing to launch an attack on the entry-level end of the luxury market. And according to word on the street, it'll be a full-on assault.

When the "small" Cadillac model dubbed ATS debuts for 2012 - the smart money's on the Los Angeles Auto Show in December - it'll be spearheaded by a four-door sedan, targeting the likes of the BMW 3 Series and Infiniti G37. But like the offerings from BMW and Infiniti, the sedan won't be the end of the story. According to an inside source speaking to Inside Line, the ATS will also breed a wagon, a coupe and a convertible.

Whether the convertible will use a folding metal roof or a conventional rag top remains to be decided, but whatever form it takes, one thing's for sure: General Motors remains very serious about Cadillac, and so should the competition.
Given the visible details at the back of the car, this appears to quite clearly be a Cadillac of some sort, as the vertical taillamps and the horizontal spoiler/high-mounted stop lamp are dead giveaways. The confusion lies with the rest of the car. While Burlapp Cars is speculating that this may be a prototype of the upcoming ATS that will slot in below the CTS, we have our doubts. The styling buck we saw at GM's design center last summer was a notchback two-door, and we would expect a four-door sedan to follow a similar layout.

A more likely scenario is that this is a prototype of a four-door Converj. The Chevrolet Volt-based Converj appeared at last year's Detroit Auto Show as a two-door coupe with a similar profile to this car. The car in the photos appears to offer similar proportions to the Volt.

It's certainly possible that Cadillac has shifted design directions for the ATS to go with this fastback look. It's also possible that Cadillac is developing a five-door hatch based on the ATS for the European market to go up against the Audi A5 Sportback and the Gran Turismo version of the next generation BMW 3 series that was recently spotted testing. Thanks to Ed for the tip!
