It happens every year. We bid adieu to some cars and trucks that will be missed, and say good riddance to others wondering how they stayed around so long. Whether they're being killed off for slow sales or due to a new product coming along to replace them, the list of vehicles being discontinued after 2012 is surprisingly long and diverse.

CNN Money has compiled a list of departing vehicles, to which we've added a few more of our own. In the slow sales column, cars like the Lexus HS 250h, Mercedes-Benz R-Class and the full Maybach lineup appear, while the Ford Escape Hybrid, Mazda CX-7 and Hyundai Veracruz are all having their gaps filled with more modern and more fuel-efficient alternatives. Obvious exceptions to the rule include models that still sell in decent numbers like the Jeep Liberty and the Chrysler Town & Country (which will eventually be replaced by a crossover-like vehicle).

Check out our gallery of discontinued cars above, then scroll down for more information.
Continue reading These cars are headed to the Great Crusher In The Sky

These cars are headed to the Great Crusher In The Sky originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 24 Aug 2012 14:58:00 EST.
Volvo has its heart set on a new, larger luxury coupe, according to Inside Line. The Swedish automaker aims to build a model slotted above the current C70. Dubbed the C90, the model will compete directly against hardware like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe, which means a convertible version will likely follow as well. The news comes via unnamed insiders.

The C90 will be built on the same Scalable Platform Architecture as the upcoming C80. As such, we can probably expect the new two-door to share the C80's gasoline and diesel drivetrain options. Given Volvo's affinity for plug-in hybrids, we wouldn't be surprised to see a battery pack show up eventually as well.

Unfortunately, none of this is written in stone. The C90 still hasn't made it into the Volvo model cycle plan, meaning the luxe two-door won't see the light of day until 2015 at the earliest. Still, the news underscores Volvo's intention to move upmarket and fight head to head with entrenched European luxury brands like Mercedes-Benz and BMW.
Volvo contemplating C90 luxury coupe originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 03 Jun 2012 16:04:00 EST.
The first quarter of 2012 will see the introduction of the Volvo C70 with the Inscription package. The Polestar-modified hardtop droptop carries a $3,900 premium above the four-seater's $40,450 MSRP and is "exclusive to the North American market," although exclusivity in this case appears to mean we get 500 of the car's 2,000-unit global volume.

Those 39 Benjamins will get you 250 horsepower and 273 pound-feet (a gain of 23 hp and 37 lb-ft); aluminum sport pedals; new leather for the seats, dash and some trim; plus 18-inch wheels, a spoiler, and a black grille. Ice White and Black Sapphire Metallic will be your only color choices. Have a closer look at the swanky Swede in the gallery of high-res photos, and there's a press release after the jump.
Continue reading Volvo C70 Inscription will cost an extra $3,900

Volvo C70 Inscription will cost an extra $3,900 originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 17 Dec 2011 16:01:00 EST.
Volvo doesn't have a big presence at the LA Auto Show, but the Swedish automaker did manage to roll out a new special edition model for our edification. The C70 Inscription is a new trim limited to only 2,000 units worldwide. The Inscription will be available in the U.S. with Volvo's T5 five-cylinder turbo delivering 230 horsepower. Other markets will feature a pair of diesel offerings in 150-hp and 177-hp flavors.

Visually, the Inscription separates itself from garden-variety C70 models through details like a black painted grille with chrome accents, polished aluminum 18-inch wheels with black accents and an interior that features Sovereign Hide(!) upholstery and a leather-clad dashboard. Other exclusive interior tweaks include Inscription-embroidered front headrests, carpet and a unique handbrake cover. The special edition folding hardtop convertible will be available in three colors; Black Stone, Black Sapphire and Ice White.

The Volvo C70 Inscription arrives in dealerships beginning this month. Hit the jump to read over the official press release, and feel free to click on the gallery above to peruse high-resolution photos from the show floor.
Continue reading 2012 Volvo C70 Inscription Edition looks a bit moody

2012 Volvo C70 Inscription Edition looks a bit moody originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 17 Nov 2011 19:01:00 EST.
Volvo enthusiasts should know the name Polestar well. The performance garage has a long history of tuning Volvos, and was anointed by the factory to run its works touring car program. Based on that success, Polestar launched a radical C30 PCP concept that is tipped to jump-start a new era of performance models from the Swedish auto marque.

Most recently, Volvo turned to Polestar to help tweak its R-Design specs, and had the tuning house start work on an ECU reflash for the S60. Now Volvo has officially announced the availability of the fruit of its collaboration with an upgrade for select models.

For $1,295 (including installation), owners of the C30, C70 and S40 (and soon the V50) with the T5 engine will be able to have an extra 23 horsepower and 29 pound-feet of torque squeezed out of their turbocharged five-pots with a dealer-installed tuning package.

The enhancement is affected by increasing airflow and optimizing spark timing, and while the aftermarket could surely squeeze out more for less, for a factory-backed upgrade, it strikes us as a good deal. Follow the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Volvo offering 23-hp upgrade for $1,295

Volvo offering 23-hp upgrade for $1,295 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 08 Nov 2011 18:29:00 EST.
Never quite capable of keeping its sales in pace with its German rivals, the Volvo C70 doesn't appear long for this world. The joint venture with Pininfarina that produced the C70 is shutting down and we've yet to receive any word on a potential new production site. So what we could be looking at here is the hardtop convertible's swan song.

Called the Inscription edition, this special C70 is set to debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show later this month. It's distinguished by such special features as a painted grille, polished black 18-inch wheels and an interior decked out in special leather trim and aluminum accents. We think it looks rather fetching.

Available with either a turbocharged five or a pair of diesels (in other markets), the Inscription edition can be had in black, black metallic or white. Have a closer look in the high-res image gallery and the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Volvo rolling in to LA with C70 Inscription edition

Volvo rolling in to LA with C70 Inscription edition originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 08 Nov 2011 14:00:00 EST.
Volvo has announced that it will cease production at the company's joint-venture plant with Pininfarina Sverige in Uddevalla, Sweden, according to Ward's Auto. That means manufacturing of the C70 convertible is without a home.

As of right now, Volvo isn't saying where, if anywhere, production of the C70 will head next. In the meantime, the 600 workers currently employed at the Uddevalla plant are being offered positions elsewhere in the company. If the C70 doesn't find a new production home, it will join models like the S40 and V50 as another discontinued Volvo for 2012.

So why shut down the plant? According to Volvo, it all boils down to economics. The automaker says that under its current configuration, the facility is only operating at 65 percent capacity, and at its current volume levels, it simply doesn't make financial sense to keep the lights on at a plant that only produces one vehicle.

Volvo and Pininfarina have jointly produced vehicles at the Uddevalla plant since 2005, but agreed to bring the relationship to a close in March of this year. At the termination of the joint venture, Volvo gained sole possession of the plant.
Volvo to end C70 production in Uddevalla, will it surface elsewhere? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 14:00:00 EST. Volvo has announced it will take sole ownership of its joint manufacturing facility with Pininfarina. The Pininfarinia Sverige AB plant in Uddevalla, Sweden, only builds the Volvo C70 convertible. According to Volvo, the changeover will take place in 2013, and the automaker will continue to build C70s at the plant.

Volvo and Pininfarina have been bedfellows at the plant since Volvo began building C70s in 2003. The car moved just over 4,000 units in 2010, down nearly two percent from the 2009 total.

Thonet shift knobs for Volvo C70 - Click above for high-res image gallery

We'll be honest - when we heard that a European contemporary furniture designer would be creating something specifically for Volvo, our first thought was, well, IKEA. (Very funny, we know.) However, the folks at Thonet (based in Germany, not Sweden) have created special wooden gearshift knobs specifically for the 2011 C70, in partnership with Volvo tuner Heico Sportiv.

The shift knobs, made out of oak, beech or walnut, are said to reflect the design language of Volvo's floating center console. Thonet has a long history of creating wood furniture designs, so it was a natural fit for Volvo to select them to create this special gearshift specifically for the Heico Sportiv C70. Hit the jump to read more in Thonet's press release.
Do you know anyone who owns a Volvo C70? We don't either. The hard top convertible hasn't been a strong seller here in the U.S. since it was introduced in 2008, but Volvo is trying to do something about that for the 2011 model year. For starters, Volvo gave its lone convertible offering a nice refresh, with a new front end in the mold of the XC60 and S60 and new, higher-end taillamps. The even better news is that Volvo has improved the C70 while at the same time offering more bang for the buck.

The 2011 C70 will start at $39,950 ($40,800 with $850 destination charge). That's a mere $50 cheaper than the 2010 model, but Volvo says it added $4,000 in standard features to sweeten the pot. Among the newly standard equipment is a five-speed automatic transmission, Sirius satellite radio and Sovereign Hide leather upholstery. Cranberry leather can replace the Sovereign Hide leather upholstery at no charge. Other changes include a new, wider instrument panel with gauges that are unique to the C70.

The 2011 C70 will retain its 2.5-liter turbo five cylinder engine with 227 horsepower. Hit the jump to read over the Volvo press release.

Why San Diego? That way you could maximize the amount of time your new C70 spends with its top down. More than three hundred days a year -- probably. We say this because we saw some leaked shots of Volvo's latest hardtop droptop a couple of weeks ago and it looked real nice with the roof stowed. Elegant even. But dude, is this Swede funny-looking with the top up. Viewed from the side, it's hard to tell which end is which. Only the arching, over-sized headlights lend a clue.

There are some good points, like those aforementioned headlamps. And we really dig the new grill. The mirrors, wheels and rear end treatment (check those LED lights) all pass the smell test, too. But what's up with those cheapo fog light surrounds? And you simply have to check out the thick rubber antennae to understand how awkwardly it's placed. And again, speaking of awkward, with the top up the C70's proportions are bizarre. We're talking Volkswagen Eos bizzare. Make of it what you will, but we're left with the impression that Volvo took a styling step backwards this time out.

Volvo still hasn't released an official press release to accompany them, but it would appear that genuine pics of the facelifted C70 have hit the streets regardless. Set to debut at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show, the reskinned convertible hardtop seems as if it has been spending some late evenings with the S60 Concept that debuted in Detroit earlier this year.

The fresh new look, including swept-back headlights and a larger trademark iron mask, is a further departure from the automaker's (now long ago) boxy past. At the back, a new rear lamp design includes today's obligatory stylish LED lighting, a reshaped bumper, and more pronounced "Volvo" badging on the trunk decklid.

While the exterior has taken a giant leap forward, the single interior shot inexplicably fails to reveal any changes whatsoever.

What we don't know is what resides under the hood, so Volvo may still have a few secrets to reveal in the next couple weeks.

Due principally to debt, the family owners of Pininfarina S.p.A. have contracted with Italy's Banca Leonardo to help them sell 50.7 percent of their stake in the design/contract manufacturing business. Said a source, "It is a commitment [the Pininfarina family] made with the banks. The family has no intention of leaving completely." Sure, but who will buy controlling interest of such a storied company? Have you met our Indian friend Tata?

That's right, rumors are swirling that Indian giant Tata, new owner of both Jaguar and Land Rover, is reportedly in the hunt to purchase the Pininfarina family's shares. However, the reports are painting the pending deal as a partnership rather than a takeover and Tata already has dealings with Fiat, so they're familiar with the Italian way of doing things. For its part, Pininfarina is working on an electric car (hey, why not?) with French entrepreneur Vincent Bollore. They also have contracts with both Ford and Volvo to build cabriolets of the Focus Coupe-Cabriolet and the C70, respectively. We'll see how this all plays out, especially now that Fiat owns Bertone.

2010 Volvo C70 Spy Shots - Click above for a high-res gallery

Swedespeed forum member al_bcn has managed to capture a pair of what looks to be Volvo's refreshed-for-2010 C70 convertibles totally undisguised. The topless twosome were caught galavanting around in Barcelona as they were apparently being shot for some sort of commercial.

The folding hardtop four-seater looks as if it benefits from a very similar front-end to the Concept S60 unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this past January. Incorporating a larger set of swept-back headlamps and a deeper, less upright grille, the C70's look is certainly evolutionary, but as it's a handsome enough model, we don't see this denting its appeal. Out back, the changes seem to be even more modest, with new headlamp lenses featuring more prominent backup lamps.

Whether there are substantive changes in the interior or under the C70's skin remains to be seen, but judging by the finished state of these cars, we expect to see them debut on the show circuit soon. Hat tip to Erik!

Gallery: Spy Shots: 2010 Volvo C70

[Source: Swedespeed]

Forum Spy: 2010 Volvo C70 convertible snapped during Barcelona commercial shoot originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 05 Jun 2009 08:57:00 EST. The newly released second-generation S80 won't see any major changes, nor will the new 70-series wagons, the C70, or the C30. The S40's going to bid us adieu, as there's price overlap with the S60, and the S60's not much larger than the S40. The C30's going to serve as the entry-level Volvo, while also angling at MINI's territory of cutieified premium small cars. The S60, while handsomely drawn, is becoming long in the tooth. A redesigned S60 will bow in 2010, and it will be smaller than the current model in an effort to differentiate it from the S80, as well as still serve those customers who would have gone for the S40.

While Gothenburg's losing a sedan offering, it'll be adding a CUV in early 2009 when the XC60 hits the streets. With the CUV market currently on fire, a smaller Volvo 'ute to go after X3 shoppers is a shrewd move. The basic hardware's already been piled together as the Land Rover LR2, which we suspect offers a decent preview of the XC60 experience. Basically, what we see happening is the phasing out of the P2 platform that Volvo developed in the '90s for the original S80, and a migration of all vehicles to some flavor of the EUCD platform.

[Source: Automotive News - Sub Req'd]
Volvo planning major lineup changes originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Sep 2007 10:01:00 EST. Heico covers the entire Volvo range, from C30 to a butching-up of the XC90 ute and finishing at the top of the range with a beautifully executed toning of the C70s lines. They've deftly modified the C30, creating the Heico HS3 D5 with a juiced diesel powertrain and upgrades to the chassis, interior and styling. Models affected include the 1999-2000 C70 coupes and convertibles, S60, S70, S80, V70, V70XC and XC70.

And just as Chrysler is getting rid of the Pacifica, it'll be seeing 127,928 of them coming back for new fuel pumps and powertrain control module software. The affected crossovers were built from Aug. 1 to Sept. 30, 2004. DaimlerChrysler is also sending Jeep Compass owners updates to their cars' manuals. NHTSA said the books omitted a required rollover warning. We imagine the folks over at TTAC could think of a few more warnings NHTSA could have included in the Compass manual.

[Source: NHTSA via The Associated Press via Yahoo Finance]
Volvo, Ford, Chrysler recalling thousands originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Nov 2006 12:05:00 EST. However, in the last two years, Volvo has seen a decline in its new vehicle sales and judging by figures from the first half of 2006, those numbers seem to be dwindling even more.

As far as dollars and cents are concerned, PAG condenses all of its manufacturers' earnings into one lump, so the ability to parse out who is losing what is a task reserved for only the geekiest of accounting wizards. What we do know is that PAG, as a whole, had broken even last year, while the second quarter of 2006 shows a loss of $162 million. Not massive, but worrisome.

Analysts are pointing to a number of factors leading to Volvo's decline and at the forefront of those issues is an aging product line. Thankfully, Volvo is addressing this issue head-on, granting the S80 with a thoughtful redesign, as well as bringing the new C70 into the marketplace. The entrance of the C30 hatchback, which fills a niche previously untouched by the Swedish manufacturer, may give Volvo the added boost it needs, especially if it is well received here in the States in 2008.

[Source: Automotive News - sub required]
Volvo's profitablity waning originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 31 Jul 2006 17:01:00 EST. It will likely become even more popular now that Volvo has introduced its first diesel engine in the Swedish convertible, a 2.4L turbodiesel initially developed for the S60, S70, XC70 and XC90 but downsized and detuned for the C70. Known as the D5, this five-cylinder turbodiesel develops 180 horsepower and 258 ft-lbs. of torque. It will initially be mated with a five-speed automatic transmission.

[Source: Volvo]
Volvo drops a diesel in the C70 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 30 May 2006 10:57:00 EST.
