EVO video - 2012 Car of the Year: The Track Battles - rear of Pagani Huayra

EVO has come out with another gotta-watch-it video, throwing its 2012 Car of the Year contestants around the UK's 1.5-mile Blyton Park track. It's actually a 15-minute teaser for the full-length DVD detailing the magazine's Car of the Year selection, but the tease is worth every penny free second.

Tiff Needell and sports car racer Richard Meaden handle the wheel duties, the two driving five pairs of sports cars: Lotus Exige S vs. Porsche Boxster S, Morgan Three-Wheeler vs. Toyota GT86, BMW M135i vs. Porsche 911, Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series vs. Alpina B3 GT3, the marquee event pits the McLaren MP4-12C vs. the Pagani Huayra. After a head-to-head lap with commentary during drifts, Meaden takes each car out to set a representative lap time.

You'll find the verdicts, lots of tire smoke, and lines like "Anything you can do sideways I can do sideways" in the video below.

Motor Trend Best Driver's Car 2012 showdown - video screencap

We've already watched the 2012 Best Driver's Car competition from Motor Trend numerous times, and like us, apparently many M/T viewers had questions about the week-long, nine-car comparison. Not wanting to disappoint its audience, the crew got together to enjoy a few pints while reflecting on the experience and respond to viewer questions during an episode of The Downshift.

It sounds like one of the most frequent questions asked was why some cars made the list and others were left out in the cold. First and foremost, the editors wanted to assemble a group of the newest (or significantly updated) most fun-to-drive cars available, but had to do so within the constraints of the automakers' test vehicle fleets. This explains why, for instance, the Subaru BRZ made it in to the final group of nine, while no Ferrari did.

M/T also addressed the age-old question of how and why a non-manual transmission car could be considered a top driver's car. Editors were quick to point out that, with the great automated manual gearboxes used on the Porsche 911, Nissan GT-R and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series Coupe, all that the cars were really missing was a clutch pedal.

Some of the more interesting bits of the conversation included a breakdown of tire and brake replacements required during this massive comparison. We were amazed to find out that only four sets of tires were shredded, but the "surprising amount of brakes" that required replacement definitely made sense for a competition like this at a track like Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Another thing that caught our attention was the amount of negative feedback in regards to the Lamborghini Aventador (which finished dead last) - from the failed brakes to Autoblog-alumnus Jonny Lieberman stating that "it had no business on a racetrack."

From Jonny's praise of the PDK transmission to former Editor-in-chief Angus Mackenzie's vibrant description of the 911's handling, it's easy to see why the Porsche was named M/T's Best Driver's Car for 2012.

Our old pal Jonny Lieberman gets to have all the fun. The former Autoblog editor now gets to play with multiple supercars at a time for his post at Motor Trend. As part of MT's Best Driver's Car award process, Lieberman and the rest of the magazine's team quarter-mile all of the year's contenders in what they call "The World's Greatest Drag Race." Based on the contenders, we're inclined to agree with their bluster.

While last year's race saw the Nissan GT-R edge out the Ferrari 458 Italia, this year features a few new contenders, including the Lamborghini Aventador and McLaren MP4-12C. Other contestants include the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series, Chevy Camaro ZL1, Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, Subaru BRZ, Jaguar XKR-S and Porsche 911 Carrera S, which - spoiler alert - actually won the Best Driver's Car award this year. Oh, and the updated version of Nissan's GT-R makes a repeat appearance, but no Ferraris are in the field this year.

A special thanks should go out to the Subaru BRZ. It was so far behind the competition that it provided many of the wide-angle shots that captured the whole rest of the field. The straight line is not the forte of a 200-horsepower drift-o-matic, but a fourth place finish in this year's Best Driver's Car competition is a mighty feat for this seemingly outmatched sports car.

The biggest competition in this drag race will be from the new Aventador and the MP4-12C. Do they have enough to take on a new Godzilla? You're just going to have to scroll down to find out. Motor Trend Best Driver's Car 2012 - overview shot

Here's a test of nine cars (see above), only two of which make less than 500 horsepower. Three of these nine cars recorded 0-60 times of less than three seconds, and all the rest but one (the Subaru BRZ), did it in 4.2 or less. Those are impressive stats, to be sure, but huge horsepower figures and stupid-quick acceleration, while certainly amazing in its own way, doesn't necessarily mean the car is a blast to drive - as Motor Trend says, if it were, they'd be testing a bunch of Top Fuel dragsters.

No, the point of throwing together these nine cars was to find out which is the magazine's Best Driver's Car of 2012. As you might imagine, a lot of instrumented testing goes into the equation, but perhaps the most important pieces of information come from the pilots behind the wheel. Again, to quote Motor Trend, "picking the Best Driver's Car, while fun, takes a great deal of time, thought, sweat, and vicious arguing."

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe Black Series - rear three-quarter view, yellow

If you've been sitting on your hands mulling over the idea of spending $125,000 on a Mercedes-Benz C-Class, we've got some bad news for you: your time is up. That's because, according to reports coming in from Europe, the German automaker has sold out every last example of the C63 AMG Black Series coupe.

The most hardcore of AMG models, need we remind you, is capable of hitting 60 in four seconds flat en route to a 186-mph top speed. Those are near-supercar figures from what you might otherwise call the baby Benz, if "baby" in this context more closely resembles Chucky from Child's Play. The car was built to dice it with the likes of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS and BMW M3 GTS... and ended up clocking a blistering 7:46 lap time at the Nurburgring in the process.

Mercedes-Benz had originally planned on building just 650 examples, but when demand far outstripped supply, it upped production to 800 units - all of which have now apparently been spoken for. Word has it that, even with its six-figure price tag, Daimler could still sell plenty more. The reason for the cap on production was apparently because the vital elements that set the Black model apart from its donor car were too time-intensive and were holding up production on the assembly line it shared with the rest of the C-Class range.

You may still have a chance to get your hands on a C63 Black Series, however, if spy shots of a wagon variant come to fruition. Daimler may, however, need to find a way of diverting their production off the main line to a specialist shop in order to complete them without disrupting production.

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series

Mercedes-Benz has rolled out a new video for its vicious C63 AMG Black Series. The 510-horsepower machine spends a little time frolicking through an industrial complex before taking to an open stretch of track for a little more fun. The entire clip is appropriately shot in black and white and set to the riotous tones of the hefty 6.2-liter V8 banging off the limiter. Not a bad way to blow two minutes of your day.

As you may recall, Chris Harris recently lined the C63 AMG Black Series up against bruisers like Porsche 911 GT3 RS and the BMW M3 GTS for a little German showdown. Harris found the C63 to be a willing dance partner with appropriate levels of presence on the street, but still found the machine out gunned by the track-bred Porsche. Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series DTM Safety Car

The latest hotted-up safety car for DTM is the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series. If we'd been in a racing accident, we're not sure we'd trust the men who stepped out of a car that's half steroids, half Satan, but after 12 years of providing the safety cars (along with Audi) for the German touring car series, we'll assume Mercedes-Benz knows what it's doing.

The most powerful C-Class ever will rush to the scene with 517 horsepower, an "aerodynamically optimised light bar" and other Christmas lights, AMG Track and Aero packages and an AMG-specific exhaust.

The safety car is more powerful than the 500-horsepower Mercedes actually racing in the series, so if it weren't for the extra weight it's carrying, it might even beat the other cars to the scene of the accident. 2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series dealer abuse video screencap

The Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe Black Series is a whole lotta car. Not only is the name a mouthful, but the 510-horsepower German rocket can be a handful too, well, in the wrong hands. This wouldn't be the first time we've seen techs or valets getting their kicks behind the wheel of a vehicle that doesn't belong to them, but it seems some employees at one Ottawa-area dealer didn't get the memo.

Our tipster claims that a couple rogue techs at a dealership called Star Motors (formerly Carling Motors) decided to take out one of the 30 existing Black Series in Canada for a joyride. While we agree that some test drives of performance cars should be spirited to find performance-related problems, it's pretty clear these guys just wanted some kicks behind the wheel of this $115,000+ Autobahn assassin.

For over eight minutes they negotiate the streets of Ottawa near the Hunt Club Road dealership, breaking all kinds of laws, risking property and injury in the process. The police would gladly impound this Black Series for some of these speeds, and MB enthusiasts would gladly slap these guys in the face for redlining the motor for so long.

Why any tech would post this on YouTube is beyond us, as they're are only asking to be fired. The Internet has moved in for some e-justice and MBWorld.com has been set ablaze with nasty comments on the matter. Not only did they identify the location of the dealership, they have also sent the video, the original of which was removed from YouTube but then re-uploaded by a forum member, to Mercedes-Benz Canada HQ and are hard at work trying to find the possible owner to show him what's been done to his car pre-delivery. Democracy, said Winston Churchill, is the worst form of government...except for all the others. You might say the same of the Nürburging. Not the track itself, but the ultimate bragging rights that have emerged from comparing lap times on it. Because while there are countless factors that can affect a car's lap time over such a long circuit, it's still one of the best ways to measure a car's overall performance.

And so the comparisons carry on, especially for German cars that call the Nordschleife their backyard. This time we're looking at the latest slice of awesome wearing the Three Pointed Star, the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series coupe, which has reportedly posted a 7:46 lap time at the hands of local publication Sport Auto.

Breaking the eight-minute barrier is an achievement unto itself - one which the standard C63 AMG coupe just barely missed with an 8:01 - but stands up better to comparison: In the same group test, the new Porsche 911 Carrera S barely edged it out at 7:44, while the BMW M3 GTS hit it in 7:48, placing the Black Series right in the middle of the two.

Of course, another test under different conditions, with different drivers on a different day would surely come away with different results. But in an imperfect world, these are as close as we'll get to perfect figures.

The AMG-Mercedes people thankfully gave us around 20 hot laps in their new C63 AMG Coupe Black Series over the course of the day - enough that we were able to get into a groove for the final 16 sorties or so. GT cars of about this size, setup and power tend to take to Laguna Seca like yuppies to mesquite.

And so we cooked all day in a fully accoutered C63 Black Series. The fixins' on our coupe went well beyond the standard model's race-car-for-the-road spec: Track Package, Aerodynamics Package, AMG Performance Media suite, Exterior Carbon Fiber Package, 19-inch matte black forged light alloy wheels and a fire extinguisher. We'd have preferred if some of these options actually came as standard equipment, but last we checked, we don't own and run Daimler. Not yet anyway.

Goosing the well-weighted throttle pedal to the floor at the right moment in second gear out of Laguna Seca's insidious Turn Eleven left-hander, the C63 Black Series filled all of Monterey County with its divine quad-barrel noise. The sound was almost enough to make that difficult corner worth tolerating.

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series video screen capture

Mercedes-Benz has given the company's 2012 C63 AMG Black Series a life of its own. The newest commercial for the vehicle shows exactly what happens when dealers shut off the lights and go home for the night. The coupe sets about prowling the streets of some unnamed metropolis in a quest to quench its insatiable thirst for asphalt, frightening away vagrants and using its exhaust note to bark at the moon. Looks like fun. Buyers may want to think about installing a cage in the garage if they plan to bring this Black Series home.

Our short time with the non-Black Series C63 coupe left us wanting plenty more, and the video after the jump is only whetting our appetites for this even snarlier two-door. Click over to check and watch the film for yourself.

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series Sedan spy shots

It looks as if Mercedes-Benz is closer to giving the C63 AMG Sedan the Black Series treatment, judging by the shots our spy photographers nabbed of the menacing four door frolicking around the Nürburgring.

Word has it that the C63 AMG Black Series Sedan will pack the same 510-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 as found in the two-door as well as an identical seven-speed automatic gearbox. It's worth pointing out that the cog swapper is no standard slusher, however. The seven speed is an AMG SpeedShift MCT capable of changing gears in as little as one tenth of a second. Let's see your left foot do that.

Expect to see a volley of suspension tricks lifted from the meaner coupe as well as a larger oil cooler and brakes capable of bringing planetary bodies to a screeching halt. So far there's no word on when we'll see the vehicle debut, but we're guessing it won't be too far down the line. Stay tuned.

Mercedes-Benz has a hankering for cranking out powerful luxury cars all day long. The power-hungry engineers at AMG take those vehicles and play crazy games with the horsepower and torque antes. Occasionally, Mercedes and AMG let the uncorked mad scientists loose and a Black Series vehicle is born. What you're looking at above is the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series coupe making an unscheduled debut, and that cackling noise you hear is the sound of a wild-eyed, frizzy-haired engineer welcoming his creation into the world.

Rumor has it that this super coupe will pump out 517 horses and 472 pound-feet of torque. Thanks to a slight reduction in weight and a broader track, the C63 AMG Black Series should be a beast on the street and at the track. We'll wait for official figures (and some sweet sweet seat time) before providing real claims on what this two-door is capable of. Still, we're giddy just from looking at these photos.

Hold on to your hats, folks. As if the current 451-horsepower Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG weren't hardcore enough, the folks in Stuttgart are working on an even hotter Black Series version of Merc's BMW M3 killer.

The bulgier fender flares you see here won't be the only visual upgrades - our spies tell us that a new front spoiler will be on deck, as well as a revised rear diffuser with some Formula One-inspired cues. This development car still uses the old front fascia not found on the new-for-2012 car, but we'll probably see the updated headlamps and LED running lights as part of the new package.

The automaker's 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 will still be the powerplant of choice, current intelligence reports suggest we can expect about 510 horsepower on tap - 29 more ponies than the already-potent C63 with the P31 Development Package. That grunt runs through Mercedes-Benz's seven-speed AMG Speedshift transmission, and even with the added Black Series bits, we'd expect that a few pounds have been shaved off of the AMG's curb weight.

Our spies even suggest that a C63 AMG Black Series Coupe is in the works, and it will bow shortly after the sedan's official debut. Consider that a proper successor to the shockingly great CLK63 AMG Black Series that debuted in 2007.

The Mercedes-Benz C Class already has a hugely capable and entertaining performance model in the 451-horsepower C63. But a refreshed C Class is expected to bow at next month's Detroit Auto Show, and an exotic Black Series Coupe is expected to follow later in the year.

Inside Line reports that a conversation with Mercedes spokespeople has revealed that the 6.2-liter in the C63 will not be tweaked for Black Series duty, opting instead for the company's twin-turbo 5.5-liter mill. That powertrain, as you may recall, already puts out 571 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque in the S63 AMG. That's 71 more ponies than the the CLK AMG Black Series and more twist than almost anything this side of a diesel-powered heavy-duty pickup truck. That should help justify the expected $100k-plus price tag of the rarest of AMG variants, while simultaneously making every BMW M3 owner a bit leery of a race with the Black Series coupe. Let's just hope it maintains the otherworldly bark of the naturally aspirated 6.2-liter, which is one of the C63's primary draws.

This set of spy photos landed in our inbox showing what appears to be a modified version of the giant-slaying Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG prepping for testing. Our spies indicate that this could be a high-powered Black Series version of the M3-killing C-Class, rumored to have around 510 horsepower. You know, because the standard 451-hp C63 just isn't sweet enough.

We know that the next-generation C-Class is due to arrive within the next couple of years (before the facelifted version arrives in 2011), so perhaps this is a sort of last hurrah for the top-dog C63. We can clearly see the tacked-on wider fender flares and front wheels similar to those that debuted on the CLK Black Series a few years back, and our spies suggest that a larger front spoiler and new rear diffuser will be added, as well. Power will still come from the same 6.2-liter V8 currently found in the C63, mated to a seven-speed AMG Speedshift transmission.

We're still a bit skeptical as to whether or not this is actually a full-on Black Series treatment. All we know is, we certainly wouldn't kick a 510-hp C63 AMG out of bed.
