Corvette Racing went into the ALMS round in Long Beach, California ready for a fight. Coming off of the long grind that is 12 Hours of Sebring, the two-hour slam around a concrete-lined street course promised a new challenge for the team and drivers. As promised, the race was a hard fight, demanding the drivers stay vicious and focused from beginning to end.

Despite a lackluster last-place qualifying effort for the number 3 machine, car number 4 managed a second-place grid spot. Ten minutes in, Corvette Racing had first place, though they were only able to hang on until around minute 40. Despite its less-than-desirable start, car 3 managed to work its way up the ranks to a respectable finish.

Both cars came away with the scars of an all-out street race, but managed to finish near the top of the heap. Corvette Racing now heads into LeMans with a renewed focus and the momentum of two positive results in California. Click past the break to see the team's results and get a closer look at the action.
Tommy Milner made his mark driving for BMW Rahal Letterman in last year's ALMS series alongside Bill Auberlen and Dirk Werner. Together, they won the team and manufacturer championships in the ALMS GT Class.

Milner also managed to win the Dubai 24 Hour race overall in the Need For Speed BMW Z4. This year, Milner's behind the wheel of the Compuware GT2 Corvette C6.R, and managed 3rd in class at Sebring.

To promote Need For Speed Shift 2: Unleashed, Milner took some hot laps of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca driving a GT1 Corvette C6.R. Without any driving aids, Milner laid down a 1:21.709 lap, just two seconds behind the GT1 lap record of 1:19.304. Click past the jump to check out a video of Milner's lap.

Our onslaught of CARS 2 character debuts continues this week with an exclusive reveal just for Autoblog readers. Pixar is letting us announce that NASCAR racer Jeff Gordon will make an appearance in the film as Jeff Gorvette, an up-and-coming Chevrolet Corvette C6.R that's "turning hoods wherever he competes."

More than just a cameo, Gordon's character will compete as a "respected competitor - and legitimate threat - at the World Grand Prix." Pixar makes no obvious connection to Gordon's actual roots in NASCAR, but the character of Jeff Gorvette is a Chevrolet and will wear #24 like Gordon's actual racecar, although obviously it isn't an Impala. We're not sure how the Corvette Racing team that just finished 3rd and 4th in this past weekend's season-opening 12 Hours of Sebring feels about having an oval racer portray its beloved C6.R GT2 car on film, but Pixar needed an accomplished road-racing car and probably wasn't interested in a character named Jeff Gimpala.

We're also privileged to announce that Darrell Waltrip will be returning as a character in CARS 2, reprising his role as racing announcer Darrell Cartrip, the "Kentucky-born #17 Chevrolet Monte Carlo known for his wild color commentary." He's graduated from being a Piston Cup announcer and will be on-hand to call the World Grand Prix in the sequel.

Check out both characters after the jump, including a video turntable of Jeff Gorvette.
There are plenty of top-notch competitors in the American Le Mans Series looking to knock you out of contention, especially in this year's hyper-competitive GT2 class. So it's important not to hurt your own chances with bonehead mistakes. The Pratt & Miller Corvette Racing team knows this all too well after its own #4 C6.R GT2 collided with the #3 car early in this weekend's season opening 12 Hours of Sebring endurance race.

We're not talking about a poorly timed maneuver during the heat of the race, folks. Instead, Jan Magnussen in the #3 car began leaving his pit box after an unscheduled stop to repair a power steering hose when Emmanuel Collard in the #4 Vette came out of nowhere and slammed into his side. The #4 car immediately went behind pit wall for repairs, but since the #3 car was already leaving the pits, it was forced to limp around an entire lap with a flat front tire before returning for repairs. The collision effectively took both Corvettes out of contention for a podium spot, though they did manage to finish the race in 8th and 9th place.

The mistake by Corvette Racing is all the more difficult to wrap our heads around considering how dominant this team has been in ALMS racing. That, however, was before the team switched classes from GT1 to GT2 in mid-2009. The going has been rough since then, including a particularly violent crash at Laguna Seca in last season's final race. Nevertheless, when they aren't bouncing their cars off walls (or each other), the Corvettes remain contenders to watch.
Racing improves the breed. How many times have you heard some automaker PR flack spout that line in order to justify a motorsports program? When it comes to NASCAR, which is still the most popular form of racing in the United States, it's clearly a complete fallacy. Open wheel racing, be it at Indianapolis or Monaco, largely falls into the same bucket. There is, however, one form of motorsports where there truly is a feedback loop: sports car racing like the kind on display in the American Le Mans Series.

One example is staring you in the face every time you look at the nose of a contemporary Corvette. When the C6 Corvette debuted, many fans complained about the styling, including the front air intake and the departure of the long running pop-up headlamps. The C6 brought a new larger central air intake and exposed, flush lighting. The design was influenced directly by the C5.R racing program and its need for better air-flow to the engine and brakes of the racecar. Learn more about the connection between Corvette production and racing after the jump.

Corvettes look sharp. Racing 'Vettes, even sharper. A competition-spec ZR1? Now we're talking.

After dominating the GT1 class seemingly for longer than we can remember, the Corvette Racing team is dropping down to the GT2 category for the 2010 American Le Mans Series. There they hope to find the competition, dominated by Ferraris and Porsches, even fiercer, and indeed they did for the latter part of the 2009 season. This, however, is our first look at the finished new car.

The shot above was snapped at the garages of Pratt & Miller, the racing outfit contracted by GM to develop and run the racing 'Vettes. Although the color scheme is the same yellow and black that's instilled fear into the hearts of most every other team on the grid, the 2010 C6.R, as you can see, gets a decidedly sharper paint job.

The bodywork is otherwise styled after the roadgoing Corvette ZR1, built atop an aluminum frame (instead of the GT1's steel), with steel brakes (in place of carbon-ceramic) and a downsized 5.5-liter V8 (replacing the 6.0- and 7.0-liter units employed in previous iterations). The season can't begin soon enough...

Corvette Racing GT1 mega-gallery -- Click above to enter

While the 24 Hours of Le Mans was the swan song for the GT1-class Corvette C6.R, the fellas at Corvette Racing will unveil the next chapter of the story this coming Tuesday, August 4th. According to the crew at BadBoyVettes.com, that's the day we'll see the new GT2-class Chevy Corvette racer, which will allegedly wear "ZR1-influenced" styling. Beyond that, well, we're waiting along with the rest of you. We can't imagine Corvette Racing would abandon the Jake-emblazoned Velocity Yellow-and-Black livery that has become synonymous with success over the years. They'll need all that mojo and then some in GT2, where the competition is fierce and Porsche and Ferrari rule. And that's fine. Consistent, healthy competition has been sorely lacking for the Vettes, which have essentially just raced each other recent years, so this ought to be fun. The GT2 Vettes spring into real action on August 8, when ALMS visits Mid-Ohio. To the GT2 field: Check your mirrors. They're coming. To the rest of you in readerland: Check your local listings and set those DVRs.

Gallery: Corvette Racing GT1 Mega Gallery

[Source: BadBoyVettes.com]
Corvette Racing GT2 car to be unveiled on Tuesday originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 01 Aug 2009 18:06:00 EST.
Click above for a larger image along with more shots of the new GT2 Corvette

We recently reported Chevrolet was rumored to be switching from the bespoke wide-body Corvette used in GT1, to a more stock-looking body styled like the ZR1 as it moved into the GT2 class in ALMS. Now, the first few pics of the new Pratt & Miller Corvette C6.R GT2 have surfaced courtesy of Teen Kaas at AmericanLeMansFans.com. Set to challenge the existing front-runner Ferraris, as well as the M3s, Porsches, Viper, Ford GT and Panozes, the ZR1 might be just what the General needs to stay at the head of its class.

As you can see from the photos, the hood window is gone, but the car does bear a resemblance to the ZR1 with a few minor tweaks for the track. There's a revised grille in front, a large spoiler out back and a new diffuers underneath, but other than that it looks fairly close to the stock unit. If the hood window remained you'd see a 6.0-liter LS7 this year, which will be replaced by a 500-hp, 5.5-liter race-tuned LS3 for 2010 when the rules change next year.

Gallery: ALMS GT2 Corvette

[Source: AmericanLemansFans via BadBoy Vettes via Jalopnik]
Corvette GT2 C6.R spotted in ZR1 body originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 Apr 2009 09:01:00 EST.
2009 Corvette GT1 Championship Edition - Click above for a high-res gallery

Back in February, General Motors circulated a few studio shots of a new Chevrolet Corvette GT1 Championship Edition package, but the New York Auto Show is the first time we're coming face-to-face with just such an animal.

Built up from a standard 4LT coupe or convertible, the GT1 CE is essentially a trim-and-tape tribute package designed to celebrate the C6.R's racing successes. As such, it features a graphics package influenced by the racecar's livery, including the skull "Jake" logo, driver flags, a windshield banner, and so on. There's also a ZR1 "style" rear spoiler and chrome wheels to complete the package, although unfortunately no drivetrain bits from the King Corvette will make the scene.

Inside, as you can see in our photographs below, the ebony interior has been done up in yellow stitching, and there's special GT1 embroidery adorning the instrument panel, center console armrest, and seats.

As Chevrolet has plans to build just 600 of these limited-edition models, this could well be the closest any of us ever get to driving one.

Gallery: New York: 2009 Chevrolet Corvette GT1 Championship Edition

Gallery: 2009 Corvette GT1 Championship Edition

Photos copyright (C)2009 Jonathon Ramsey / Weblogs, Inc.
New York: Chevrolet Corvette GT1 Championship Edition gets called to the carpet originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 08 Apr 2009 16:58:00 EST. The first couple of times Corvette Racing took the GT1 title in the American Le Mans Series, it must have been exciting. But after dominating the class every year since 2001, they're starting to look for a new fight, and the Porsches and Ferraris duking it out in GT2 must have started to look mighty tasty. Aching for a fight, Chevrolet's racing partner Pratt & Miller have started teasing what their latest challenger will look like, and it's pretty badass.

For 2009, the Corvette C6.R GT2 will take its cues from the new king of the roadgoing Corvette castle, the all-conquering ZR1. Don't expect a window into the race-engine compartment, but the design promises to look unmistakably like a track-bound version of the supercharged 'Vette flagship. Under the hood in 2009 will be a downsized 6.0-liter LS7 to meet the new ALMS regulations, to be replaced by a 5.5-liter race-tuned LS3 with 500 horsepower for 2010. The rendering above gives us a good idea of what the C6.R GT2 will look like, so F430 and 911 pilots had better get used to it.

[Source: BadBoyVettes via Jalopnik]
A Wolf in Wolf's Clothing: New Corvette GT2 racer takes cues from ZR1 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 01 Apr 2009 18:30:00 EST.
Keith Cornett of Corvette Blogger spent last weekend down in Florida at the 12 Hours of Sebring. He was likely one of the few whose attention wasn't solely fixed on the top tier Le Mans P1 class in which the new Audi R15 did battle with Peugeot and Acura. Keith was there for the Corvettes, and this particular race was significant for Corvette Racing. Later this season, Corvette will switch from the GT1 to GT2 class, so this was the final chance for the C6.R to open up a can at Sebring, and open a can it did.

The Competition Sport is a new model offered by Chevy that celebrates the Corvette's success in racing, and it's more than just a pretty package. Keith got to sample what the Competition Sport has to offer while riding shotgun during a hot lap session at Sebring the day before the big race. His ride was #02 in the series, a fact that was evident to all thanks to the large door graphic that comes on these cars. Follow the jump for two videos that highlight Keith's hot lap in the Competition Sport Corvette and click here for more info on the limited edition cars.

[Source: Corvette Blogger]
Continue reading VIDEO: New Competition Sport Corvette footage shows car in action at Sebring

VIDEO: New Competition Sport Corvette footage shows car in action at Sebring originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 Mar 2009 14:29:00 EST.
GT1-class racing is one of the most hotly contested in Europe, with cars like the Aston Martin DBR9 and Maserati MC12 competing among others for top honors in the Le Mans Series and FIA GT Championship. Here in the American Le Mans Series, however, officials are considering the possibility that they'll have to shut down the class altogether.

This season, the Corvettes have had the category all to themselves, which has made the class uninteresting, with predictable outcomes. Bell Motorsports announced their intention to run Aston Martins to compete with the Corvettes for GT1 victory, but that may be another case of too little too late. Itching for a good fight, GM is reportedly dropping down to the paradoxically more competitive GT2 series. Not anxious to run another season of an empty GT1 roster, ALMS could very well cut the class out altogether.

Take BadBoyVettes.com, for example. Dedicated to covering and rooting for Corvette Racing, this band of supporters has already achieved a great deal. The Bad Boy Vettes skull logo serves as Corvette Racing's unofficial mascot, and it has adorned the race cars' b-pillars since the 2005 24 Hours of Le Mans. That in itself is cool beyond description, but it's nothing compared to what the BBV crew got Corvette Racing to agree to for the final round of the ALMS at Laguna Seca the weekend of October 20.

Bad Boy Vettes has convinced Corvette Racing to let it design the race livery for the pair of C6.Rs that weekend. The #4 car will be revealed at a party on October 17th, and in the image above, you can catch a glimpse of the paint scheme under the spray cans. As if the C6.Rs weren't badass enough to begin with, now they're going to be adorned with giant skulls. Evil FTW!

Conversely, at Autoblog Decentralized World Headquarters, we have had no say whatsoever in the paint scheme of the LeMons entry Damon's preparing.

[Source: Bad Boy Vettes]
Break out the Krylon: Bad Boy Vettes designing C6.R livery for season-ender at Laguna Seca originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Oct 2007 15:57:00 EST. The fellas at Bad Boy Vettes sure know how to give Le Mans a "YOU ARE THERE" feeling for those of us not fortunate enough to be jetting overseas for the annual 24-hour showdown.

BBV, calling in-car cameras "passe," taped their trusty Canon PowerShot digicam to the hood of one of the yellow C6.Rs as it lapped the circuit Wednesday with Ron Fellows behind the wheel. Ron Fellows, making his final Sebring appearance as one of the #3 car's co-drivers, has a similarly liveried limited-production Corvette Z06 named for him. The change to the race car is an obvious tie-in to the production machine, as it's identical in scheme right down to the red fender stripes.

GM points out that this is the first time since Le Mans 2003 that one of Corvette Racing's cars have run in a color other than yellow. Their press release does not point out that 2003 was the year that the Vettes, in their navy blue anniversary livery, were bested by Prodrive's 550 Maranello at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. As of Sebring's 10-hour mark, it looked as if running in a non-yellow color might not the luckiest thing for the C6.R. The O'Connell/Magnussen/Fellows #3 car was running second in GT1 behind the still-yellow #4. The #3 led early in the race, however, and the cars were on the same lap as of the last posted standings, so there's still time left for it go out and bust that color jinx.

UPDATE: #4 car wins GT1 (7th overall), followed by the #3 (8th overall). Gap between the two was 17 seconds.

[Source: GM via ALMS]

Gallery: Corvette Racing #3 car at Sebring

Sebring: Corvette Racing's #3 car wears white in salute to Fellows originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 17 Mar 2007 20:16:00 EST. Now the postseason awards are beginning to pile up as well. Ron Fellows, who co-drives the #3 C6.R with Johnny O'Connell, won his third straight ALMS Driver of the Year award, while his crew chief, Dan Binks was recognized for his efforts and named GT1 Crew Chief of the Year.

And it doesn't end there. This week in Germany, the heart of the C6.R, it's LS7.R motor, was recognized as Global Motorsport Engine of the Year by a jury of 50 race engine engineers. When you consider the breadth of global motorsport and the number of outstanding engines competing on circuits week in and week out, the award becomes even more significant. You don't even need to leave ALMS to find another high-profile powerplant that garnered quite a few headlines of its own this past season.

The C6.R's relentless success and reliability stems largely from the excellence of the LS7.R that lives under its long hood -- a trait that is matched or exceeded by the dedication of its drivers and crew. If history is any indication, we can expect more of the same come March when the 2007 season kicks off at Sebring.

[Source: ALMS]
Corvette Racing's LS7.R named Race Engine of the Year originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Nov 2006 07:58:00 EST. Automobile Magazine weighs in with its two cents, stating that the so-called "Blue Devil" will actually carry the significantly less satanic moniker of Z07 - or maybe Z06.R (with the "R" presumably standing for "Really hazardous to your driving record"). That seems somewhat more clumsy than the Sting Ray or Super Sport/SS names that we've heard tossed around, but would fit in with GM's long history of three-digit alphanumeric codes.

The 650 HP 6.2L supercharged GenIV V8 looks to be housed under a huge air duct, which is likely required by the addition of a air-to-water intercooler unit. Serious speed requires the shedding of serious heat, and so the car has also grown vents along the top and rear of the front fenders, and a NACA duct has appeared on the top of the rear quarter panels. Hit the link to see the full spy shot - we're anxious to hear what you think, as we're already in love.

The supercar is said to be on its way in 2008 as a 2009 model (giving us two more years to make inaccurate predictions), and will carry a price tag of around $100K. Given the Z06's superlative performance, we don't doubt for a moment that the Z07 will provide the biggest bang for the buck in its market segment.
