<br />
<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/volvo/">Volvo</a> has built versions of its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/c30">C30 hatchback</a> with <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2009/09/16/frankfurt-2009-volvo-introduces-c30-drive-with-99-g-km-of-co-s/">efficient diesel engines</a>, <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2007/02/01/volvo-c30-plug-in-hybrid-concept/">plug-in hybrid powerplants</a>, <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2008/12/02/volvo-launches-flex-fuel-s80-and-c30-in-thailand-to-go-with-new/">flex-fuel ICEs</a>, and <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2009/09/17/frankfurt-2009-volvo-reveals-battery-powered-c30-w-video/">pure electric drivetrains</a>. It's the all-electric version that will get some extra attention at the <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/category/Detroit-Auto-Show/">Detroit Auto Show</a> next month with Volvo's announcement today that it will build at least 50 units of the BEV C30. The cars will be made next year and are due to start real-world tests in 2011.<br />
<br />
Volvo brought a drivable prototype version of the C30 BEV to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/Frankfurt-Motor-Show/">Frankfurt Motor Show</a> earlier this year, but the machine that will be shown in Detroit is a more evolved iteration. Volvo says that the NAIAS unit has a complete interior, full instrumentation, and enhanced battery packaging.<br />
<br />
Lennart Stegland, director of Volvo Cars Special Vehicles, said in a statement, "The first prototype helped us identify the main technological challenges, such as battery packaging and safety issues. We have addressed these challenges without compromising the C30's cool and fun-to-drive personality. I am very happy with the result. The electric C30 in Detroit is a much more complete product." <br />
When you're an auto <strike>journalist</strike> blogger, you're constantly, incessantly bombarded with a series of questions. Usually it's, "What's the best car you've ever driven?" (Personal answer: Superformance Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, followed by blank stares.) The other question we get more frequently than, "How you doing?" is, "What car should I buy?" Sorta like the initial question, we have a a few boilerplate responses. One of them just happens to be the sadly invisible but highly desirable <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/VolvoC30/">Volvo C30</a>. Really, if you're in the market for a small, stylish car under $30K, you can't do much better. Usually, we're totally ignored. Though one friend did heed our advice -- she also happens to own a 1972 Datsun 240Z. In other words, a woman with taste.<br />
<br />
For 2010 Volvo has <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/08/refreshed-volvo-c30-peeks-out-ahead-of-frankfurt/">updated the C30</a>. The biggest change is that the small hatch's snout is now up to snuff with its rear. We especially dig the new grill (also seen on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/16/frankfurt-2009-2010-volvo-c70-works-best-in-san-diego/">2010 C70</a>). Kinda looks like an upside down Aston Martin front end, no? The long, arching headlights are major improvement, too. We even like the the mirrors. Inside, the song remains very much the same -- think icy, Scando fortress of solitude. And of course, the rear end is as killer looking as ever. Sure it harkens back to the P1800's stern, but the C30's isn't slavishly derivative. In fact, the 2010 model's reworked bumper makes it look even better. Long story short, as long as Volvo's around, we'll keep recommending the C30. Especially since it's as close to we can get to a shooting-brake. <br />

<br />
<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/02/rendered-speculation-volvo-c30-earmarked-for-a-2010-refresh/">As expected</a>, Volvo will do the nip tuck on its entry-level model, the C30 hatchback, for the 2010 model year. The first official pictures and an accompanying press release have just been unleashed ahead of the car's upcoming debut at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/frankfurt-auto-show/">Frankfurt Motor Show</a>, and, not surprisingly, the updates focus mainly on the front and rear fascias and closely mirror the modifications made to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/01/2010-volvo-c70-leaks-out/">C70 hardtop convertible</a>.<br />
<br />
Up front, an interesting mixture of sharp angles and creases join organic shapes and headlamps that are stretched well back into the fenders. Prominent badging puts Volvo's iron mark front and center in the shapely new grille. At the rear, the brand name is spelled out in larger script on the C30's trademark glass hatchback.<br />
<br />
Besides the refreshed appearance, the 2010 C30 will also sport a bevy of new color options, including an Espresso/Blond interior combination. Chassis mods start and end with an available Sports package that lowers the car by 10 millimeters, adds stiffer bushings, dampers and stabilizer bars and a quicker steering ratio. Want more? Check out our gallery below and hit the jump for the U.K. press release.<br />

There's not much to complain about when you gaze upon any <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/17/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-volvo-c30-v2-0/">C30</a>, though the R-Design trimmings offer sprinkles on the cupcake. The cars will be exclusive, with oly 400 hitting showrooms in April for a base price of $25,700. The easiest way to spot the special Swedish hatches will be the metallic mirror housings, grille and grille crossbar. There's also a subtle R-Design badge affixed to the grille to identify the car as something just a little special. Special paint colors will also set off the R-Design cars, and the body kit-equipped car we photographed shined resplendently in Black Sapphire. Interior changes consist of blue-faced gauges like the actual high-performance S60R (RIP) and R-Design logos embossed into the leather inserts on the seats and metal accent bits around the cabin. The R-Design cars are more style than substance, but the exclusivity will be of value to buyers who like to have something special, and the T5 powertrain that all U.S.-bound C30s carry offers snappy performance already.<span style="font-style: italic;"></span><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/new-york-2008-volvo-c30-r-design/low/">New York 2008: Volvo C30 R Design</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/new-york-2008-volvo-c30-r-design/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/01_c50_volvo_lived_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/new-york-2008-volvo-c30-r-design/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/02_c50_volvo_lived_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/new-york-2008-volvo-c30-r-design/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/03_c50_volvo_lived_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/new-york-2008-volvo-c30-r-design/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/04_c50_volvo_lived_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/new-york-2008-volvo-c30-r-design/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/05_c50_volvo_lived_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/20/new-york-2008-volvo-c30-r-design/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New York 2008: Volvo C30 R-Design is R-some</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/20/new-york-2008-volvo-c30-r-design/">New York 2008: Volvo C30 R-Design is R-some</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 20 Mar 2008 13:59:00 EST. <div align="center"><strong><em><small>2008 Volvo C30 - Click above for high-res image gallery</small></em></strong><br /></div>
<br />We've been told for so long that hatches don't sell here in the U.S., so it's surprising to see a new crop of two-box premium cars going on sale. MINI started it with its R53 Coopers; retro flash met modern dash and it sold successfully enough to warrant an upgrade to the <a href="http://autos.aol.com/cars-MINI-Cooper+S/overview">R56</a>. Volvo's got the same lust for entry-level customers to its premium wares, so on the scene rolls the <a href="http://autos.aol.com/cars-Volvo-C30/overview">C30</a>. Based off the <a href="http://autos.aol.com/cars-Volvo-S40/overview">S40</a>, the C30 reaches back over three generations of boxy-but-good styling to a time when Swedish cars wearing the alchemist's symbol for iron had curves and a shooting brake profile. Hatch/wagon/brake/estate - call it what you will, Volvo's hoping it can call the C30 a success.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-t5-version-2-0/low/">Review: Volvo C30 T5 Version 2.0</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-t5-version-2-0/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/c30_ft1_crop_1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-t5-version-2-0/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/c30_rear_rvrs_1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-t5-version-2-0/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/c30_ft_3_1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-t5-version-2-0/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/c30_rear_1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-t5-version-2-0/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/c30_hatch_1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><em><strong><small>All photos (C)2008 Dan Roth / Weblogs, Inc.</small></strong></em><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/17/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-volvo-c30-v2-0/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Review: 2008 Volvo C30 V2.0</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/17/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-volvo-c30-v2-0/">Review: 2008 Volvo C30 V2.0</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 17 Mar 2008 11:58:00 EST. It's also home territory for the loved and loathed Red Sox. There's plenty of cars plastered with "B" stickers, license plates and trinkum. Long a sponsor of Red Sox baseball, Volvo's rolled out a special edition of its stubby C30. The Kammback hatch comes with a factory-fitted Team logo stuck to the glass of the rear hatch, fender badges and a distinctive shade of red. This regionally pimped Volvo is a limited edition, with only 107 examples being produced. <br /><br />If baseball (or just the Red Sox) isn't your thing, Volvo's got an Ocean Race Edition that spans the V70, XC70 and XC90 models. Ocean Race cars have been available a couple of times before, sporting Ocean Blue paint and nautical detailing, and the new Ocean Race themed cars continue to tie in with the actual sailing event. New this time around is the availability of Ocean Race models in Electric Silver as well as Ocean Blue. Interior details are more evocative of sailing, and new wheels draw inspiration from the undulation of the ocean. Volvo expects to shift 9,000 of these maritime units, which should make it easy enough to find a limited production Volvo, even if you miss out on the baseball themed C30. <span style="font-style: italic;">Ocean Race press release after the jump<br /></span><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/special-edition-volvos/low/">Special Edition Volvos</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/special-edition-volvos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/green_monster_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/special-edition-volvos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/fender_badge_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/special-edition-volvos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/center-stack_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/special-edition-volvos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/3490_2_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/special-edition-volvos/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/3491_2_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: Volvo]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/06/bats-and-boats-special-edition-volvos-for-bo-sox-fans-and-sai/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Bats and Boats - Special edition Volvos for Bo' Sox fans and sailors alike</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/06/bats-and-boats-special-edition-volvos-for-bo-sox-fans-and-sai/">Bats and Boats - Special edition Volvos for Bo' Sox fans and sailors alike</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 06 Mar 2008 08:57:00 EST. Just-Auto.com is going one step further by reporting that Volvo will also add a new XC CUV model to its lineup based on the C30 hatch to be called, not unsurprisingly, the XC30. Presumably it will also be a five-door model with all-wheel-drive that's jacked up off the ground a bit. <br /><br />The burgeoning of Volvo's 30 series of cars will come at the expense of the S40 sedan, which will be merged with the larger S60 eventually creating a common mid-size sedan likely to retain the S60 name. The new S60 won't get a V-named wagon counterpart, however, which would be too close in concept to Volvo's standalone V70 and XC70 models. Do expect, however, an XC60 CUV model to be based on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/01/08/detroit-auto-show-volvo-debuts-the-oh-so-swedish-xc60/">XC60 Concept</a> that debuted at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit last January. <br /><br />Finally, as we recently reported, rumors of the larger <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/12/18/volvo-responds-next-gen-xc90-not-dead/">XC90's demise</a> have been exaggerated and Volvo's largest SUV is expected to get a refresh soon and a full-on replacement eventually. Clearly, however, Volvo sees future profits by filling out its small car lineup with versions of the C30 hatchback that will sell well all over the world, and not just the U.S.<br /><br />[Source: Just-Auto.com]<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-t5/low/">Volvo C30 T5</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-t5/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/4860_2_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-t5/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/4861_2_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-t5/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/4859_2_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-t5/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/03/volvo-c30_le_051_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-t5/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/03/volvo-c30_t5_083_high-res_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/12/27/report-volvo-plans-xc30-cuv-to-join-v30-wagon-and-c30-hatch/">REPORT: Volvo plans XC30 CUV to join V30 wagon and C30 hatch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 27 Dec 2007 15:24:00 EST. The announcement that Ford is developing a new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/12/17/european-ford-focus-rs-teaser-hits-the-net-sales-begin-in-2009/">Focus RS</a> has given us even more reason to be hopeful. Pure speculation and performance prognostication says that the 2.5-liter turbocharged mill shouldn't be an issue since it's already fitted into the C30 and its platform siblings, the Focus ST and S40, plus, all-wheel-drive could be part of the equation.<br /><br />A 300 hp C30R has the potential of joining the Mazdaspeed3 as another way of satiating our desire for a hot Focus, and if the price, we're smelling a hit.<br /><br />[Source: Swedespeed]<br /><br />Thanks for the tip, Paul!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/12/20/ford-focus-rs-could-beget-volvo-c30r/">Ford Focus RS could beget Volvo C30R</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 20 Dec 2007 10:03:00 EST. Things appear to be heating up with the <a href="http://autos.aol.com/cars-MINI-Cooper+S-2007/overview">MINI</a> being joined by the<a href="http://autos.aol.com/cars-Volvo-C30-2008/overview"> Volvo C30</a> and word of another Swede stepping into the fray. Saab will unveil its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/11/26/big-plans-for-gms-new-delta-small-car-platform/">Delta</a> platform-based 9-1 at the 2008 London Motor Show and it will be available for purchase in late 2009. Nondefinitive descriptors provided by Saab assure us that the 9-1 will be dramatically styled with an iconic shape. There had been some attention paid to a high-roof small CUV idea, but Saab asserts the 9-1 will be sporty in that Saab way, though it will have the functionality younger buyers are looking for. <br /><br />Rather than pile on to the CUV segment, Saab could cash in some retro love and still make a very Saaby and useful car that doesn't put on truck airs. The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saab_99">Saab 99</a> of the 1970s could provide some inspiration for the 9-1, resulting in a car that doesn't occupy a lot of space, but can swallow a refrigerator. Look to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/02/28/geneva-motor-show-saab-takes-off-with-aero-x-concept/2">9-3X</a> and <a href="http://www.saabcentral.com/features/saab_misc/saab9x_a.php">9X</a> for hints about what the car might actually look like. <br /><br />[Source: Autocar]<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/12/05/mini-killa-saab-9-1-headed-for-london-motor-show/">MINI-killa: Saab 9-1 headed for London Motor Show</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 05 Dec 2007 09:57:00 EST. "The five-door would be less exciting from a design perspective, but we're looking to expand." That seems like an accurate statement considering that stretching the three-door model could have a few negative aesthetic implications. But if sales of the C30 in the U.S. and Japan go through the roof, a five-door model could be a competitive product for buyers looking to move up market from the C30's platform sibling, the Mazda3.<br /><br />[Source: Automotive News - Sub. Volvo, however, thinks the best way it can compete in the coupe niche is by resurrecting the 1971 P1800ES. And if you ask us, they could be right.<br /><br />The <a href="http://autos.aol.com/volvo-c30-2008:9207-overview">Volvo C30</a> is an odd car when seen among SUV-filled American traffic. Its relatively tall, stubby nose juts out from the headlight-capped fenders wrapped snugly around 18-inch alloys. The front fender line continues as the car's full length shoulder, and just beyond the doors, widens to become the rear fender and taillights. It's a dramatic look that lets the C30 trick those on the outside into seeing a much smaller vehicle than it actually is. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-volvo-c30-version-2-0/439826/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" align="right" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/10/hatch_215w.jpg" /></a>In back, you might first think the hatch opening would be huge, but only the rear glass opens, reminding us of another favorite two-door hatchback: the BMW Z Coupe. But unlike the Bimmer, the Volvo has some usable space back there, though it's not that easy to access through the small opening. There are also two more seats than in the Z, and more than adequate head and leg room for all passengers. We don't recommend the C30 for cross-country trips with all the kids, but singles, young couples and maybe a small, light-traveling family will find it big enough for daily use and possibly even weekend treks. <br /><br />Continue reading about the C30 after the jump.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-volvo-c30-version-2-0/low/">First Drive: Volvo C30 Version 2.0</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-volvo-c30-version-2-0/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/10/2-volvoc30_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-volvo-c30-version-2-0/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/10/1-volvoc30_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-volvo-c30-version-2-0/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/10/3-volvoc30_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-volvo-c30-version-2-0/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/10/4-volvoc30_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-volvo-c30-version-2-0/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/10/5-volvoc30_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br /><strong>Live Photos Copyright (C)2007 Chris Tutor / Weblogs, Inc.</strong><br /><span style="font-style: italic;"></span><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/10/15/first-drive-volvo-c30-version-2-0/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>First drive: Volvo C30 Version 2.0</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/10/15/first-drive-volvo-c30-version-2-0/">First drive: Volvo C30 Version 2.0</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 15 Oct 2007 13:28:00 EST. Its 105 HP 1.6L turbodiesel engine is optimized for fuel efficiency, and its transmission even uses low friction oil so as not to sap the power running through it. The tranny's third, fourth and fifth gears are also taller, and low rolling resistance tires, an aero-optimized undercarriage and special rear spoiler all contribute to lifting the C30 Efficiency's fuel economy to an incredible 4.5L for every 100 kilometers, or 52.26 MPG in the U.S. cycle. That's all, no whiz bang hybrid drives or vaporous hydrogen fuel cells on board this car.<br /><br />One interesting design detail we didn't notice when the official pics were first released is the car's wheels, which are odd to say the least. It appears that the material between the spokes is something like chicken wire with a very fine weave. We're not sure if it cuts down on the production of turbulent air behind the wheel or a designer just had a brain fart, but it comes off as one of those "green" details this car could do without. <br /><br />Check the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/08/20/frankfurt-preview-volvo-c30-efficiency/">original post</a> for the nitty gritty details, and view our high-res gallery of live shots by clicking below.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-efficiency/low/">Volvo C30 Efficiency</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-efficiency/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/07_frankfurt_c30efficiency-0_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-efficiency/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/07_frankfurt_c30efficiency-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-efficiency/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/07_frankfurt_c30efficiency-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-efficiency/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/07_frankfurt_c30efficiency-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-efficiency/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/07_frankfurt_c30efficiency-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/09/12/frankfurt-2007-volvo-c30-efficiency-keeps-it-simple-stupid/">Frankfurt 2007: Volvo C30 Efficiency keeps it simple, stupid</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 12 Sep 2007 13:01:00 EST. The newly released second-generation S80 won't see any major changes, nor will the new 70-series wagons, the C70, or the C30. The S40's going to bid us adieu, as there's price overlap with the S60, and the S60's not much larger than the S40. The C30's going to serve as the entry-level Volvo, while also angling at MINI's territory of cutieified premium small cars. The S60, while handsomely drawn, is becoming long in the tooth. A redesigned S60 will bow in 2010, and it will be smaller than the current model in an effort to differentiate it from the S80, as well as still serve those customers who would have gone for the S40. <br /><br />While Gothenburg's losing a sedan offering, it'll be adding a CUV in early 2009 when the XC60 hits the streets. With the CUV market currently on fire, a smaller Volvo 'ute to go after X3 shoppers is a shrewd move. The basic hardware's already been piled together as the Land Rover LR2, which we suspect offers a decent preview of the XC60 experience. Basically, what we see happening is the phasing out of the P2 platform that Volvo developed in the '90s for the original S80, and a migration of all vehicles to some flavor of the EUCD platform. <br /><br />[Source: Automotive News - Sub Req'd]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/09/04/volvo-shuffles-its-lineup/">Volvo planning major lineup changes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 04 Sep 2007 10:01:00 EST. The Swedish automaker has been in a marketing and design rut, which it intends to rectify by offering a new compact model that takes aim at the MINI and other small-sized competitors like the Volvo C30.<br /><br />The new compact vehicle will be accompanied by a new small crossover and a redesigned 9-5, both of which will take styling cues from the Aero-X concept that has already infused the new 9-3. A new 9-5 will be based on the Theta and Epsilon 2 platforms, and is likely to debut in 2009. The CUV is expected near the close of the decade, while the 9-7X may meet its maker by the end of 2008.<br /><br />[Source: Automotive News - Sub. The reasons behind the current boom in hatchbacks and crossovers are obvious: better fuel economy, more car-like handling and ride, all with many of the same attributes of an SUV.<br /><em><br /><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" align="right" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/08/volvo_c30_t5_350-op.jpg" alt="" />USA Today</em> ran a piece that details some of the offerings that are either making a splash in the marketplace already, or that are pegged to be winners as the movement away from big 'utes continues. Much of the discussion centers on some of the new high-end crossovers that are currently in the works, specifically the BMW X6 and Infiniti EX35, which offer a bit more luxury over outright utilitarianism.<br /><br />The real crux of the article is that American consumers have put to rest the moribund offerings of the 70s, like the Ford Pinto and Chevy Vega, and are finally warming up to the sloping rooflines of modern five-door designs.<br /><br />[Source: USA Today via <a href="http://news.windingroad.com/concept-cars/trendspotting-us-hatchback-offerings-mushrooming/">Winding Road</a>]<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-infiniti-ex35/low/">2008 Infiniti EX35</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-infiniti-ex35/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/08/inf_ex35_hi_001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-infiniti-ex35/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/08/inf_ex35_hi_006_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-infiniti-ex35/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/02/08_ex10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-infiniti-ex35/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/02/08_ex11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-infiniti-ex35/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/02/08_ex12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/08/29/weve-heard-this-before-usatoday-reports-hatches-are-coming-bac/">We've heard this before: USA Today reports hatches are coming back</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 29 Aug 2007 10:04:00 EST. At the time, there was discussion that other models in Volvo's line-up may get R-worthy tweaks when these two models were nixed. Another rumor that Volvo may kill off the "R" designation altogether was floated, and although we thought it was unlikely, we figured time would tell.<br /><br />Tell it has, and according to an article in Automotive News, the 2007 model year will be the last for the Rs.<br /><br />Slow sales of both the S60R and V70R were the final nails in the coffin of Volvo's hotted-up models, which originally began with the T5R back in 1995. While US sales of these high performance sedans were the highest of any country, the numbers haven't justified the extra expense here or abroad, leading to Volvo's decision.<br /><br />Thankfully, Fredrik Arp, Volvo's CEO, made it clear that Volvo will continue to develop more driver-focused machines -- pointing out the new C30 hatch and V8-powered S80 -- so the automaker is merely deleting the consonant, but its ethos will remain intact.<br /><br />However, don't expect anything soon, as Arp is quoted as saying that, "We are working on the next phase, but it will not be immediate." So does that mean no AWD, 250+ HP C30? We hope not, but again, time will tell.<br /><br />[Source: Automotive News (Sub. According to Automotive News, the automaker is allowing visitors to the <a href="http://c30.us.pls.carscomplete.com/prelaunch/dispatch.do">C30's site</a> to configure their ride as desired, and then is quoting them a price. However, that price fluxuates depending on when you visit.<br /><br />AutoNews' example involved both the base model and a fully loaded version, with the former coming in on March 8th at $24,970, while the latter's price was $28,270. Checking back six days later, on March 14th, prices had dropped to $21,565 for the base model and $24,415 for its fully optioned sibling.<br /><br />Volvo's intention is to determine what potential buyers are willing to pay and how many vehicles they should ship to the States. Since the C30 is a slight departure from the automaker's conventional offerings, Volvo wants to get the right mix before making a commitment to a set number of vehicles.<br /><br />While the rationale behind this move has its merits, we're a bit unsure as to whether such a tactic is particularly smart when launching a new model, as it may merely confuse consumers before they even have a chance to seriously consider the product.<br /><br />[Source: Automotive News - Sub. This week, the automaker released a slew (seriously) of new photos to coincide with the hatchback's Australian launch, and the eye candy is such that we couldn't help but share it with you. So, please take some time to peruse the 93 photos in the enormous gallery below. Each pic is sized to suit your monitor, making them just right for most desktops as wallpaper. This is one car that's going to cause a fight among the editors when it comes time for one to slide into the Autoblog garage. Neff is <em>so</em> gonna pull rank...<br /><br />Enjoy the pics!<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-t5/low/">Volvo C30 T5</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-t5/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/4860_2_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-t5/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/4861_2_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-t5/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/4859_2_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-t5/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/03/volvo-c30_le_051_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-t5/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/03/volvo-c30_t5_083_high-res_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br /><strong>Related Items:<br /></strong>

Even before its revolutionary <a href="http://www.volvocars.us/footer/about/NewsAndEvents/News/default.htm?item=%7B9A6C00B8-4D97-4F88-9CAC-E72CA9C0F674%7D">Lambda-Sond system</a> in the late 1970s, the Gothenburg-based automaker had been making efforts to tread lightly. Now comes word that Volvo has developed a hybrid version of the C30 hatchback. The drive system is reportedly a series hybrid, with the batteries being charged on the go by a diesel powerplant. There's plug-in charging capabilities, as well. The batteries alone can provide motive power for about 45 miles before the generator awakes. The electrified C30 will be part of the Michelin Challenge Bibendum, where engineers will presumably be trying to break stuff so that any production version has well-vetted hardware. No details are available about whether the hybrid hardware was developed in-house by Volvo or bequeathed by parent Ford, which developed a similar series hybrid drivetrain with a hydrogen fuel-cell generator for the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/01/07/detroit-auto-show-ford-airstream-concept/">Airstream Concept</a> that debuted at the Detroit Auto Show this year. <br /><br />[Source: Autobild - in German]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/01/30/volvo-c30-hybrid-concept/">Volvo developing C30 series hybrid concept</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 30 Jan 2007 13:02:00 EST.
