If you found yourself in a situation where lives were in danger, would you step up and be the hero?
Junior high students in Milton, Washington were confronted with just such a scenario, and 13-year-old Jeremy Wuitschick manned up in a big way.

When his bus driver went into convulsions, he shot out of his seat, grabbed the wheel, pulled the bus over and had the presence of mind to pull the keys from the ignition. Wuitschick may have averted catastrophe with his actions. Hit the jump to see the hero in action.
Continue reading Brave kid stops runaway school bus when driver has seizure

Brave kid stops runaway school bus when driver has seizure originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 14 Apr 2012 18:02:00 EST.
Well, this looks Hanoi-ing.

Vietnamese traffic lieutenant Nguyen Manh Phan pulled over a bus driver in Hanoi for driving on the wrong side of the road. Instead of cooperating, the driver refused to show his papers and decided instead to flee the scene.

The officer, though, wasn't keen on seeing driver Phung Hong Phuong get away so easily, so he positioned himself in front of the bus. When the bus began moving, the officer grabbed hold of the windshield wipers and hung on for dear life.

The bus driver did eventually pull over about a kilometer down the road after more officers and civilians pursued, but not before the incident was caught on tape.

Now, having personally visited the country in the last year, believe me when I tell you that traffic laws almost completely go unenforced and everyone drives on the wrong side of the road in Vietnam. In other words, this person must really have been driving dangerously to be singled out. What's more, he had been released from prison in 2010 for his part in a fatal traffic accident.

The video, along with a news report on the incident, can be seen by scrolling down.
Continue reading Watch this Vietnamese policeman go on a wild ride after stopping a bus

Watch this Vietnamese policeman go on a wild ride after stopping a bus originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Apr 2012 20:00:00 EST. Lots of traffic, lots of people, no tipping. And the job has just gotten worse in Jinghua, where a bus company has instructed its drivers to please stop hitting expensive supercars.

To illustrate the point, drivers were shown a poster with supercar logos to watch out for and how much the associated cars were worth. Hit a Lamborghini, you'll be out 5 million yuan (almost $800,000 USD). And right there, the last vestige of fun was taken away from the under-appreciated Chinese bus driver.

The poster even includes the Shelby Super Cars logo, which can't possibly be all that common in China. Odder still is the omission of the Porsche insignia, which we take to mean it's open season on Boxsters and Caymans.
Chinese bus companies tell drivers not to hit supercars originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 28 Mar 2012 14:30:00 EST.
How safe are busses? It's a good question, and one that the United States Department of Transportation is mulling over after revising work hour regulations for truckers and airline pilots earlier this month. Bus drivers are next on the list, as the USDOT is seeking public comment on allowable on-duty time, according to Bloomberg.

The effort would amend rules that are several decades old, just as bus travel has taken off. Buses represent the fastest-growing transportation segment, with departures up 7.1 percent this year, according to a study cited by Bloomberg. This year, eight bus crashes have resulted in 28 deaths, according to the report.
DOT to push for new bus driver sleep regulations? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 29 Dec 2011 10:14:00 EST.
Passengers on a bus put a lot of faith in the person behind the wheel. A bus driver will shuttle many folks in his or her daily routine, and it's that person's job to make sure people get where they're going safely. One passenger on a Canadian bus line recently managed to capture a driver doing just the opposite.

As the bus was in motion, the man behind the wheel decided it was an opportune time to fill out a little bit of paperwork. The person holding the camera stated that the driver was also using his phone before switching to this exhibition of distracted driving. Of course, this isn't the first time riders have attempted to exact a bit of YouTube justice on unsafe bus drivers - we've previously seen videos of a Portland bus jockey reading a Kindle, as well as an overachieving Italian operator using not one mobile phone, but two. Click past the jump to watch this latest example of distracted driving.
Continue reading Passenger catches Canadian bus driver doing paperwork while driving

Passenger catches Canadian bus driver doing paperwork while driving originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 01 Aug 2011 15:01:00 EST. Bus Driver with two cell phones - Click above to watch video after the jump

The Italians sure do know how to live. Their vehicles are more beautiful, their meals more delicious and their bus drivers more distracted. Just take a look at the video after the jump to see what we mean.

While jostling through the hectic traffic of Rome (of course it's in Rome, where else?) this particular driver took the time to attempt to set up his email on a new smartphone while speaking to customer service on a second handheld device. That's right, this guy was rocking two phones at once while ferrying a load of people through the city streets.

Now, you may be wondering exactly how the mechanics of such a situation would play out. Our enterprising pilot took to steering the bus by using his elbows. According to The Guardian, the company that owns the bus service has suspended the driver pending a full investigation. Still, it's terrifying to know that this guy is likely still behind the wheel of his personal vehicle. Click past the break to see the full video for yourself.
Continue reading Italian bus driver fired for driving with elbows while using two phones

Italian bus driver fired for driving with elbows while using two phones originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 May 2011 14:59:00 EST.
According to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, accidents attributed to distracted driving killed about 5,500 Americans in 2009 alone. That grizzly statistic recently prompted our nation's lawmakers to roll out new regulations prohibiting commercial truck and bus drivers from texting or using cell phones or other electronic devices while driving. Someone should have told the book worm of a municipal bus driver in Portland, Oregon that Amazon's Kindle falls under the "electronic devices" category.

A passenger on the bus captured video of the bus driver, with his e-reader in plain view while motoring down I-5. The first 14 seconds of the video look entirely harmless, until said driver reaches down and appears to turn the page on the device. Later, the driver is caught driving with his elbow, leaning forward for a better look at what must have been a riveting read. If there was ever any doubt why the Department of Transportation is hosting a distracted driving summit this week, hit the jump to watch unnecessary risk-taking at its worst.
It was an oil-burning 32-passenger GMC that was ready for retirement by 1982. It was driven by Sarge. I'm not sure why she was called Sarge, but her demeanor definitely lived up to the moniker. Frequent exhortations to"SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP" kept us all in line. Nobody ever laughed when she ground the 2-3 upshift. Think you'd enjoy ruling passengers with an iron fist? You could go get the endorsement on your license and then hit the job market, or if that takes too much effort, just buy Bus Driver, the video game.

Hey, at least it's still a driving game, but it's the staid, responsible version of gaming. Rather than speed around a track or create mayhem, your mission is to follow routes in your school bus, city bus or tour bus while picking up and dropping off fares. What fun, the replays must be enthralling. It could be worse, though - it's still a wheeled conveyance you're controlling rather than some Wiimote-powered silliness. We do wish that Meridian4, the game's publisher, had included the DeLorean bus that never got off the ground.

Gallery: Bus Driver: The Video Game

[Source: Winding Road]

Forget Gran Turismo, Bus Driver is greatest next-gen driving sim originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 11 Mar 2008 09:01:00 EST.
