The previous mark for the number of cars simultaneously performing a burnout, as certified by those record keepers at the Guinness Book of World Records, was 49. That mark has now been moved to 69 (even though the newscast graphic says 70, it was 69) thanks to the petrolheads ready to sacrifice tires at Australia's Summernats Car Festival in the nation's capital, Canberra.

The annual festival has always included burnout competitions, usually for one of two titles that end in "a bloodbath of rubber and smoke." According to one of the Summernats co-owners, this year's attempt effort in the Liqui-Moly Power Pit ended with about 30 tires blowing during the 30-seconds of sustained scorching needed to take the record.

You'll find a newscast of the burnout in the first video below, along with a spectator's capture of the record from beginning to end. And smoke. Lots and lots of smoke.

As you can see from the screen grab above, some people get to have all the fun. Jay Leno, who owns more cars than you will ever drive in your lifetime, was graced with the presence of a Fiat 500 Abarth at his garage.

Now, this was not the first time that Fiat has stopped off with the potent Italian runabout. Fiat dropped in on Leno with an Abarth back in December of last year, but this time he was able to take it out on the road and put the performance-minded 500 through its paces. And that he did.

Leno owns the very second 500 to be sold in America, and raised the question: Is the Abarth good enough for an upgrade? We certainly think so, but Jay took to the Los Angeles streets to find out. Along the way, he mused about how the Abarth would stack up against the Ferrari Dino and the future of the performance automobile. Ferrari 458 on Great Wall

Ferrari is not an outfit that would miss out on the enormous opportunity presented by the Chinese market. Having won the grand prix there three times out of the first four it was held, the Prancing Horse marque launched a special-edition 599 there in 2009, followed by an even more exclusive porcelain-finish one-off.

For 2012, Ferrari created a special-edition 458 Italia to mark the year of the dragon, and to launch it, the local dealership in Nanjing rented out a section of the Great Wall. It's what they did with it, however, that has local authorities seeing red in more ways than one.

Apparently at some point during or after the demonstration, an employee of the dealership got behind the wheel of the limited-edition V8 supercar and pulled some smokey donuts. The problem is that the stunt left tire marks burnt into the ancient surface, leaving authorities understandably upset. What repercussions will ensue remains to be seen, but we certainly wouldn't want to be ticking off China's notoriously strict government.

Cadillac CTS-V burnout

One rear-drive coupe with over 500 horsepower would be enough for most automakers. But not General Motors. The biggest of the Detroit automakers just couldn't get by with what some rivals would put on a showroom turntable with more flood-lights than an ATF raid. That's why it makes the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and ZR1, the Camaro ZL1 and the Cadillac CTS-V. (And that's before we get into overseas products like the Holden Commodore GTS/Vauxhall VXR8.)

The question is, which one is best for burnouts? To bring us one step closer to the answer we all crave, our compatriots over at Inside Line took two such 500+hp GM super-coupes - the Z06 Centennial Edition and the CTS-V Coupe - down to the Streets of Willow for the fifth installment of their Burnout Super Test.

2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8

SRT cars love doing burnouts. This is not news. So, how do you get an all-wheel-drive 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 to produce as much smoke as any Challenger, Charger or 300C we've ever seen? By messing with the ECU, of course.

You see, in Track mode, the Jeep sends 65 percent of its power to the rear wheels, and, according to SRT engineers, there are certain instances where 100 percent of the engine's power can be sent to just one rear wheel. Loading some special software into the engine's control system can easily allow for sending all the power to both rear wheels, and thus, burnouts ensue.

Chrysler really should have sold the Dodge Viper without its body. We don't really have anything against the slinking lines of the big snake, but there's something about the vision of the V10 monster frolicking around with its skirt off that simply flips all the right switches. It's like a post-pubescent Ariel Atom. If you recall seeing the awesome Viper-powered Saab 9-3 SportCombi built by Zatzy forum member mrspringer, you probably spent at least half a second wondering what fate befell the engine's donor.

Well, wonder no more.

Mrspringer seemingly got a hold of the whole vehicle in running condition with one notable exception - it had no skin. Like any mad scientist worth his salt, the guy immediately set the rear tires spinning and the naked guts of the Viper pirouetting in a remarkably tight parking area. Books are made for reading, boots are made for walking and tires are meticulously engineered for burnouts. As you may or may not be aware, the latest chapter in the Fast and the Furious saga was released this weekend to the rejoicing of testosterone-soaked teenage crowds everywhere. Nowhere was Fast Five more celebrated than in Detroit, as after the final credits rolled, the movie-going masses retired to the parking lot for an impromptu burnout competition.

If you listen very, very closely, you can hear the cries of a million environmentalists.

Nearly everyone got in on the fun, from full-size diesel pickups to front-wheel-drive Chevrolet Malibu models and beater Nissan 240SX projects. Some of the more impressive smoke came courtesy of a Mitsubishi Evolution that retired to a far flung corner of the cinema parking lot to wring out some all-wheel-drive pirouettes. The fun seems to have lasted a good long time before the local PD showed up to put a stop to the party. Miraculously, very little sheetmetal was wrinkled in the smoke.

Hot Rod was recently busy filming its Shelby Cobra versus Super Snake video, but that doesn't mean there wasn't some downtime. That break in the action... resulted in more action, because someone at Shelby handed the Hot Rod crew keys to a 2011 GT350.

Did they take a few casual runs up and down the road to get some basic footage? No, they lined up the car on a desert side street and attempted to ruin the rear rubber. On their way back to the original film shoot, they threw in a quick power slide for good measure. Drop the clutch and click past the jump to check out the clip.

When Mercedes-Benz first dropped word that a team of enterprising individuals had wedged a kicking Silver Arrow V8 under the hood of the company's diminutive B-Class hatch, we immediately began searching around for a video of the machine in action. Now the German automaker has been so kind as to supply just such a clip. While we'd love to see the little five-door lift a leg around a proper road course (Nürburgring?), for now we'll have to settle for a shot of the steroid-riddled commuter lighting up its rear tires in grand fashion.

As you may recall, the B55 was created by trainees at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Rastatt. With 385 horsepower borrowed from an E-Class and about as much weight as a box of tissues, this creation ought to go like stink. Hit the jump to check out the action for yourself. Now we just have to wait and see whose palms we have to grease to be able to plop ourselves behind the wheel for a spell.

There are plenty of guilty pleasures when it comes to cars and motorcycles, but chief among them has to be the burnout. Sure, you might as well be lighting $100 bills on fire, and yes, you're not exactly doing the environment or your vehicle any favors, but there's just something magical about sending the rear (or front, though that's usually not nearly as fun) wheels spinning. It seems that Pirelli has taken it upon itself to educate the public about the highly-addictive nature and dangers of lighting up a tire. Remember, kids, do as your told, not as we do.

We love burnouts as much as the next guy, but lets face it: Not every clip of tires spinning on pavement is a thing of beauty. The beautiful, crisp HD video (shot at 120 frames-per-seconds on a very serious Red One camera) is chock-full of elegant pans, tilts and slo-mos with 19-inch Viper wheels spinning all the while. We're not sure if it's the raw display of power or the smell of burning rubber, but there is just something about a good burnout that puts a smile on our face. Of course, the burnout has to be done right to make us smile. A poorly executed spinning of the rear wheels prompts plenty of indifference, unless the burnout goes so terribly wrong that it proves to be somehow better than even the best burnouts.

Luckily it just so happens that we've found an instance of badder is better. Hit the jump to see what happens when a guy in his third-gen Chevrolet Camaro has the wrong kind of tires to be spinning around on the pavement. We don't want to spoil the climax of this video, but we will tell you that it is absolutely worth watching if you're a big fan of automotive carnage.

We're not exactly sure why burnouts are fun to watch, but boy are they ever. In the hands of an expert, the smell of the burning tires and the roar of the engine are a thing of beauty. For the amateur, burning prolonged rubber can lead to more than some ruined radials. Hit the jump to view one of the saddest burnouts we've ever seen. For some reason, the man behind the wheel of this BMW thought it would be a good idea to lay rubber on a cement embankment. The resulting video ought to be enough to make sure an insurance claim isn't approved. We're just happy nobody appeared to be hurt; as this one could have ended even more badly.

Ahh, YouTube: the equivalent of morning cartoons for us grown-ups, only now we drink coffee with our Fruity Pebbles. The post title pretty much sums this up. As more people get their hands on SRT8 Dodge Challengers, more videos of wanton tire massacre will surface. Today's round comes via MyRide, which set about tagging the tarmac at Willow Springs with a silver example. When the Camaro finally comes out, we expect to see approximately one bajillion videos exactly like this, with at least half sporting the inevitable Dead Milkmen soundtrack. New York 2008: Hyundai Genesis Coupe doing power slides

The 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is the new rear-driver that enthusiasts have been waiting for, and the automaker showed the assembled mass of media just how fun its hot new ride is. Hyundai pulled out all the stops at its press conference, including hiring a couple of Hollywood's finest female stunt drivers to unveil what is perhaps its most exciting vehicle ever. Oh, what fun, a luxury sport sedan advertising smackdown. Lexus has returned a volley after Audi made a shot across their bow with a TV spot swiping at Lexus and implying that a self-parking car is for non-driving drivers. Like that kid in class who never knew quite how to shoot back a response, Lexus has produced a couple of spots that are almost, almost badass. The spots, titled "Etiquette" and "Doughnut" juxtapose imagery of the GS 460 partaking in power oversteer antics to a soundtrack of operatic aria. That's cool, the Lexus 4.6 liter V8 does have a muscular snarl, and the GS can at least keep up with the pack. What's uncool is the snooty tagline, admonishing "just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should." Yeah, nannying is such a come-on to purchase. The tagline for "Doughnut" is even worse - "Yes, you can. And no, you shouldn't." Doesn't that just makes the "screw you" center in your brain light up? To create spots with badass imagery and hooligan undertones, only to soft-pedal the tagline and shroud it all in some sort of veil of "that's beneath us" does not sound the klaxon for enthusiasts. The car itself looks to be fun, if they've managed to put some discipline into the suspension, a real manual transmission, and dial back the electronic joy-killers.
