When the smoke cleared this weekend at the inaugural Ken Block Invitational Gymkhana Grid event at Toyota's Irwindale Speedway, Tanner Foust had claimed the top spot. The head-to-head event, which had drivers like Foust, Vaughn Gittin Jr., Andrew Comrie-Picard and host Ken Block cording brand-new tires in a matter of minutes, pitted powertrains (AWD or RWD) in the same brackets to keep things interesting. After several rounds of eliminations, it came down to just Foust and Block for the final - both drivers in similar 550 horsepower AWD Ford Fiestas. In the best-of-three sprints, Block ran nearly flawlessly, but Foust demonstrated inhuman levels of car control (720-degree spins just inches from a barrel) to take the first two races and the resulting overall win.

On a related side note: Earlier in the evening, Michael Essa, driving GSR Autosport's 350R (a BMW V10-powered 3 Series), topped Vaughn Gittin to take the win at the Discount Tire burn-out contest. While other drivers spent their three minutes doing spins around the course, Essa simply cranked his steering wheel to the left and bounced off the rev-limiter (in third gear) until he disappeared into a thick gray cloud - liquidating his Nitto tires in 90 seconds of carnage.

Hit the jump to watch the complete battle between Block and Foust.

Click above to watch the video after the jump

We love burnouts as much as the next guy, but lets face it: Not every clip of tires spinning on pavement is a thing of beauty. Some are too short, the camera is too shaky or perhaps the burnout is just a sloppy mess. Hey, it happens. But every now and again, we come across something special - a true Rembrandt of burning rubber, so to speak.

Patiently waiting past the jump is just such a work of artistic genius, with a Snakeskin Green Viper playing the starring role. The beautiful, crisp HD video (shot at 120 frames-per-seconds on a very serious Red One camera) is chock-full of elegant pans, tilts and slo-mos with 19-inch Viper wheels spinning all the while. Proceed beyond the jump for three minutes of joy. You won't regret it.

Oh, and we love the smell of <strike>napalm</strike> burnt rubber in the morning...
Before us on the printed page was a bright silver LS sedan doing a burnout and... (gulp) drifting! The Japanese luxury carmaker's relentless pursuit of perfection has always been so categorically opposed to having fun while driving that the images seemed from another world altogether.

But indeed they are not. You see, the 2007 Lexus LS460 is the first LS sedan ever that allows its stability-control system to completely turned off. Once the big lady lets her guard down, the 4.6-liter V8 producing 380 hp and 367 ft-lbs. is totally and utterly at the mercy of your right foot, which makes burn outs and drifting possible for the first time in a Lexus LS sedan. In fact, we'd venture to guess that Angus Mackenzie and company over at Motor Trend are the first to perform this feat in a Lexus LS sedan, if not the first to record it on film, though they certainly won't be the last. And to think, the even more powerful hybrid LS600h is still yet to arrive.

Special thanks to Motor Trend for furnishing us with these pics, and to photographer Mark Bramley for capturing the moment.

[Source: Motor Trend - Oct. 2006, subscribe here]
Continue reading World's First: Lexus LS460 gets loose

World's First: Lexus LS460 gets loose originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 28 Aug 2006 20:15:00 EST.
