Colorado's specialty "Committed to a Cure" license plate was rolled out in 2005. According to the women behind it, the goal was to "create broad awareness about the breast cancer crusade," and Coloradans have paid $50 to put the plates on their cars. A recently passed bill in the Colorado Legislature will add another $25 to that fee, and that extra surcharge has compelled the current plate's designers to ask for it to be retired.

The $25 will be applied to a fund that pays for treatment for uninsured women who have breast or cervical cancer. Carol Hickman, who had the original idea to create such a plate for Colorado is behind the movement to retire the current plate, says that since "there's no research component... it's not going to the overall purpose of committed to a cure." If the disease itself isn't being addressed with the surcharge, Hickman feels it's better not to allow the current plate to be used.

The uninsured women who have breast cancer and would benefit from treatment assistance would probably call that an overly strict definition of the word "cure." There is also the fact that no portion of the $50 vanity plate fee -- paid for 28,602 plates -- has gone to breast cancer research or treatment: half of that money goes to the DMV to pay for the plate and license services, the other half goes to highway maintenance.

A new plate breast-cancer-themed will be unveiled by November 1. Current plate holders have the option of trading plates when the new design arrives, or keeping theirs until 2012. The $25 surcharge will be optional until then.
Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. If you test drive a Ford, Lincoln, or Mercury before June 1, Ford will give $20 to the foundation, up to $1,000,000. Dealers can match the contributions up to $1,000 per store, and you can choose which local Komen affiliate you would like to receive your donation.

There are two ways to take advantage of the charity offer: before you go for your test drive, log on to www.fordcares.com and print out the registration form. After your test drive, the dealer will give you a code to enter on the Ford Cares site, and that will activate the donation. Or, if you're in a Komen Foundation Race for the Cure, your race packet will have a registration form you can take to the dealer before your test drive. You can read the full press release after the jump, and now you have a great <strike>alibi</strike> reason to test drive that Shelby GT500...
Continue reading Ford adds charity benefit by giving $20 to cancer foundation for each customer test drive

Ford adds charity benefit by giving $20 to cancer foundation for each customer test drive originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 30 Apr 2009 08:01:00 EST. Only 2,500 were built and the sale of each went to helping fight breast cancer through donations to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure charity. As we all know, one special version of the Mustang is not enough, so Galpin Auto Sports of Pimp My Ride fame has gone and "Galpinized" a Mustang convertible that will be given away as the grand prize in the Warriors in Pink Mustang Sweepstakes.

The Galpin Warriors in Pink Mustang is a bit more flashy than its factory sibling, sporting hot pink rally stripes over black paint, pink headlight splitters, a new grille and spoiler, a lowered suspension and 20-inch pink and black rims. The Warriors in Pink logo has also been hand painted on the back between the taillights for a custom touch. Electronic upgrades like a Kenwood nav system with 7-inch touchscreen are also included, along with new pink and black leather upholstery. Unfortunately, an untouched 200-hp V6 sits underhood, but we suppose this car is meant to be seen rather than driven.

If you're interested in winning the Galpin Warriors in Pink Mustang, or just think fighting breast cancer is a good thing, you can enter the sweepstakes before December 31st by visiting FordCares.com.

[Source: Galpin Auto Sports]

Gallery: Galpin Warriors in Pink Mustang

Continue reading Galpin builds special Warriors in Pink Mustang for charity

Galpin builds special Warriors in Pink Mustang for charity originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 18 Dec 2007 15:57:00 EST. Komen for the Cure, an organization dedicated to finding a cure for breast cancer. Over the past 13 years, the Blue Oval has given more than $90 million in cash and donations to the group. Ford launched its Warriors in Pink campaign last year to help it focus its efforts in giving to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and this year plans to go beyond selling just Warriors in Pink branded apparel by offering the 2008 Mustang Warrior in Pink package.

Only 2,500 Mustangs will be built with the Warriors in Pink package, which itself includes everything one would get when ordering the Mustang Pony package. It's available on the V6 Premium Array Coupe and Convertible models, and will include a pink ribbon and Pony fender badge, pink striping on the rocker panel, and pink stitching on its charcoal leather seats, steering wheel and floor mats. The car itself will be available in three colors: black, metallic silver and performance white. Ford expects the sale of these cars to generate around $500,000 in funds for Susan G. Komen for the Cure along with some other fund raising efforts being planned.

Ford's official press release on the Warriors in Pink package can be found after the jump and gallery of high-res images can be viewed by clicking above or below.

[Source: Ford]

Gallery: 2008 Ford Mustang Warriors in Pink Package

Continue reading Ford reveals 2008 Mustang with Warriors in Pink package

Ford reveals 2008 Mustang with Warriors in Pink package originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 11 May 2007 17:51:00 EST. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. We're glad the series switched off the topic of product, as we were becoming increasingly frustrated with its back-against-the-wall, underdog-pulls-it-out attitude towards Ford's current situation. This episode, however, highlights Ford's giving nature, and give it has. The company is about to reach $100 million in total contributions made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. We meet the Warriors in Pink in this episode, who are foot soldiers funded by Ford and charged with the mission of eradicating breast cancer. We also spend the day at the track with Champ Car driver Katherine Legge during her recent race at Road America where she slid behind the wheel of a special car wearing Warriors in Pink livery, i.e. a baby pink paint job. Unfortunately Katherine scratched up that pretty paint job pretty good when she lost control of the car, hit the wall and virtually disintegrated the ride. The crash looked worse than it was and the safety measures did their job, as Katherine was fine and returned to racing five days later.

[Source: Ford Bold Moves]
Ford Bold Moves - Episode 16: The Warriors (and one wicked crash) originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 19 Oct 2006 18:18:00 EST.
