Volkswagen has discovered that a previous recall of 362,000 vehicles (1999-2002 Jettas and 1998-2002 New Beetles) for a defective brake light switch actually affects a much larger range of vehicles. The German automaker is extending the recall to an additional 790,000 vehicles that include 1999-2006 Golf and GTI models, 2001-2005 Jettas, 2001-2007 New Beetles and the 2004 R32. The possibility exists that brake light switches in these vehicles may have been installed wrong, which could lead to their remaining on all the time or not working at all. In an extreme possibility, some vehicles with automatic transmissions might be immobilized if the brake light switch can't be activated so that the transmission can be shifted out of Park. When the new recall begins in April, VW dealers will install a new brake light switch free of charge for owners of the affected vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced that Volkswagen AG will recall 362,000 vehicles in the United States for a brake light switch that has the potential to malfunction. The recall affects certain 1999-2002 model year Jettas, some Jetta III from 1999-2000, and also the 1998-2002 New Beetles. This is evidently a recall of a previous recall -- the brake lights might not operate at all or may stay lit due to an incorrect installation the last time the cars were brought in to resolve the problem. 

Also heading up today's recall list: 30,793 Chevrolet Corvettes from model years 2005 and 2006, for the roof separation issue we first told you about in our Chevrolet Corvette P-Funk Edition Rankles Owners story back on April 21.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced that General Motors is recalling over 400,000 pickup trucks due to malfunctioning brake lights. While the automaker is unaware of any accidents resulting from the problem, trucks also outfitted with cruise control lose that functionality as well. Trucks affected are the 2004-2006 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups and 2006 Isuzu i-280 and i-350 trucks.
