Only about a week ago did the company Epic EV makes its very first delivery of the Torq Roadster to a customer. Before that, our colleagues at Translogic spent some time with company founder Chris Anthony and were the very first to get some seat time in this Morgan-Three-Wheeler-Meets-Tesla-Roadster EV.

You may recall, Chris Anthony has been involved with some some very special EVs, including the ill-fated Aptera, the DeLorean EV, the all-electric wakeboard boat and an EV ATV.

The Torq Roadster is a natural extension of his work in electrified transportation, and while somewhat spartan, keeps up nicely with the EV world's performance standard-bearer, the now-cancelled Tesla Roadster, in the performance department: 0-60 miles per hour happens in about four seconds and this very wide trike (80.5 inches) can pull 1.3G while cornering.

Watch Translogic host Bradley Hasemeyer take it for a spin below.
Continue reading Translogic test drives the Epic Torq three-wheeled EV roadster

Translogic test drives the Epic Torq three-wheeled EV roadster originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 18 Apr 2013 19:00:00 EST.
The Translogic crew has trekked northward to Ashland, OR, to ride the epically electrified Brammo Empulse R motorcycle. With a six-speed transmission that enables both huge accelerative potential and 100+ mile per hour top speeds, as well as a maximum range of 121 miles, the Empulse R case on paper is pretty solid.

As it turns out, the case the EV bike makes for itself on the street is rock solid, too - at least that's the impression we're given from the huge smiles in the video below. Translogic also chats with Brammo CEO Craig Bramscher, and catches up with the progress of the racing team. Check it out.
Continue reading Translogic goes two-wheeling with the electric Brammo Empulse R motorcycle

Translogic goes two-wheeling with the electric Brammo Empulse R motorcycle originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 04 Apr 2013 19:31:00 EST.
The Translogic team took some time to swing by the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory recently to chat with Ann Devereaux, the deputy lead for entry, descent and landing for Curiosity, the Mars science lab. If anyone knows what it takes to to move a project like Curiosity from concept to touch down, it's her. Over the course of the quick segment on the rover program, host Bradley Hasemeyer learns about the extensive real-world testing that went into bringing the rover to life as well as the staggering amount of computer modeling it took to prepare for the rover's descent.

While the Curiosity program is only supposed to last two years, NASA is currently looking into ways to bring samples from the red planet back to Earth. That will be a substantially more ambitious project, but with the brightest minds in the field on the case, we wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility. Check out the latest Translogic episode below.
Continue reading Translogic takes a closer look at the Mars Curiosity rover

Translogic takes a closer look at the Mars Curiosity rover originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 22 Oct 2012 20:00:00 EST.
The crew from Translogic seem to be on a water power kick. Not too long ago, host Bradley Hasemeyer tried his hand at a water-powered jet pack, and while cool, the machine's ridiculous price tag seems a bit out of the realm of reality for common folk.

Now Translogic has turned its attention to the FlyBoard; a water-powered contraption that uses a snowboard-like base and two hand-held nozzles. The whole contraption lands at just under $7,000 and can be operated using any jet ski. That's still pricey, but more in line with what well-to-do folk looking for a toy can shell out - plus we can now see a business case for waterfront entrepreneurs to offer pay-per-ride attractions, meaning you're probably much closer than ever before to trying out a jet pack for yourself.

Hasemeyer seems to get the hang of operating the contraption easily enough, though his short stint at the controls doesn't lend him the expertise to pull off any stunts. Still, this looks like the easiest and least-expensive way to fulfill your Iron Man fantasies here in the real world. Check out the episode below for a look.
Continue reading Translogic tries out water-jet-powered Flyboard

Translogic tries out water-jet-powered Flyboard originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 09 Oct 2012 17:45:00 EST.
BMW was one of the biggest corporate supporters of the 2012 London Olympics, earning the right to be its official car sponsor. But it wasn't just ponying up a few dozen 7 Series for the IOC that got it this plum gig. BMW made a commitment to meet specific CO2 emissions targets for the vehicles it provided.

BMW supplied about 4,000 vehicles to the London Olympics organizers, everything from motorcycles to electric Minis to hybrid 5-Series sedans to diesel X5 SUV's. Our sister site Translogic went to the Olympics to get a taste of the breadth and depth of the BMW Olympic fleet.

So, we think the crew at our sister site Translogic have lost their minds. Either that or they're trying to steal our jobs.

While nominally a show and blog about mobility, most weeks Translogic is discovering all manner of geeky automotive technology, while driving alternative-fuel vehicles powered by electricity, the sun, wood, or whatever crap they can find. This week, however, for the 100th show, they straight-up went to the track to drive supercars. At Disney World. Speedway.

Take that, greenies and transportation wonks. Everyone loves to flog roadgoing sex from Lamborghini and Ferrari, even - make that especially - Translogic host Bradley Hasemeyer.

Scroll down to watch the excitement.
Continue reading Translogic celebrates 100 episodes, goes to Disney World

Translogic celebrates 100 episodes, goes to Disney World originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 26 Apr 2012 12:30:00 EST.
We've seen a lot of motorized bicycles over the years, but none look quite like the YikeBike. It looks like a miniature nineteenth century Penny Farthing bike that has no pedals and a backwards handle bar. But once you go beyond the looks of the YikeBike, the engineering is pretty interesting.

The YikeBike can be folded up to the size of a suitcase, it can be had in various composite materials including carbon fiber, and it is electrically powered. It even captures energy via regenerative braking. The downside? It only goes 12 miles per hour, and it could cost as much as $3,800. Oh, and it's impossible to look cool while riding a YikeBike.

Translogic's Bradley Hasemeyer traveled to England to try the YikeBike For himself, and the five-minute video is available after the jump. Yes, it looks awkward, but we'd be happy to give it a go ourselves.
Continue reading Translogic circles back to check out the YikeBike

Translogic circles back to check out the YikeBike originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 Feb 2012 16:57:00 EST.
The Lightning GT all-electric supercar has been inching its way towards production for years now. The last time we talked about itwas November 2010, but it's back thanks to Translogic.

The video series from our colleagues at AOL Autos took a trip to Europe and managed to score the very first drive of the Lightning GT before anyone else. Not even Top Gear has sat in this thing and it's being developed in their backyard.

The specs for the car as they stand today are 400 horsepower from its electric motor powering the rear wheels for a 0-60 time of around 4.5 seconds and a maximum range of 150 miles. The folks behind the Lightning GT even claim that their lithium-titanate batteries (sourced from the U.S.) can be recharged in just 10 minutes when paired with a big daddy ultra powerful off-board charger.

Bold claims for sure, and we'd likely describe the Lightning GT as vaporware if Translogic didn't just drive it. Drive it they did, though, so follow the jump to watch Translogic host Bradley Hasemeyer be the first to put foot to floor in the Lightning GT.
Continue reading Translogic visits Europe, first to drive the Lightning GT

Translogic visits Europe, first to drive the Lightning GT originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 09 Feb 2012 19:28:00 EST.
Rapid prototyping is the process of turning math and chemistry into a physical item. Well, that is our extremely dumbed-down explanation, because the real explanation is soaring hundreds of feet over our heads. Still, it's a process that is used rather extensively in the automotive industry because it allows engineers and product development teams to quickly produce a part from scratch, and then see how it would fit on an actual car.

Translogic, along with host Bradley Hasemeyer, ventured to Michigan to visit with General Motors at its Warren Tech Center. Inside, Hasemeyer was able to get up close and personal with the rapid prototyping process, and GM even minted the Translogic crew a special rapidly made item to take with them.

When Translogic's Bradley Hasemeyer helmed the Seabreacher, he used the craft to run right at the water's edge. Now, Hasemeyer has traveled down to Miami, Florida to check out a new craft that will have him rising up above the wet world beneath him. It's called the Jetlev R200, and it's jet pack powered by water.

Hasemeyer straps himself into the near-$100,000 rig, and proceeds to spend some time attempting to slip the surly bonds of Earth. We say "attempting" because it seems Bradley could use a few more minutes with an instructor. We were hoping for soaring, but we ended up with skimming. And maybe a little crashing, but thankfully, no drowning.

We kid because we're jealous, Brad... Click past the jump to see why this thing looks like an absolute blast.
Continue reading Jetlev R200 water jet pack takes TLX to new heights

Jetlev R200 water jet pack takes TLX to new heights originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 11 Jul 2011 19:58:00 EST.
Bradley Hasemeyer has driven some unique vehicles. We've seen him take the helm of a Tango EV, the dolphin-shaped Seabreacher and the electric Z-Kart. Now, Hasemeyer gets behind the wheel of a vehicle that hits a little closer to our Autoblog hearts, the Lexus LFA.

Don't expect a smoky, sideways review of the car - after all, this is Translogic, and the gist is to dive into the technology behind the machine. What you can expect, though, is a well-made video filled with great information... and that's exactly what's waiting for you after the jump.
Continue reading Lexus LFA gets broken down by Translogic

Lexus LFA gets broken down by Translogic originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Jun 2011 19:25:00 EST. Translogic hits the streets in a Tango EV - Click above to watch video after the jump

The Tango electric vehicle looks like a cross between a G-Wiz and Goldmember's Corbin Sparrow. However, it has a hidden talent buried underneath its tandem seating configuration: It's quick - very quick. What does that mean exactly? Bradley Hasemeyer and the AOL Translogic crew decided to trek to Spokane, Washington and talk to the man behind the machine, to find out.

The brainchild of Rick Woodbury, the Tango EV is an electric two-passenger car capable of sub-four-second 0-60 mile per hour bursts. At just 39-inches wide, the Tango is narrower than a Honda Goldwing motorcycle. It's no cream-puff piece of plastic, either. Woodbury says you ought to be quite safe behind the wheel of the Tango thanks to its FIA-certified roll-cage and reinforced doors.

It's a tire-smoking electric two-door that looks as odd as it does fun. Whir past the jump to watch Translogic take the Tango EV for a spin.
Translogic goes for a 260-horsepower swim - Click above to watch video after the jump

Translogic went to swim the fishes. No, not in a mafioso graveyard but within the canopy of a submersible known as the Seabreacher, the brainchild of Rob Innes and Dan Piazza, co-founders of Innespace Productions. It's a new breed of watercraft capable of running both on and under the water, and occasionally soaring over it.

Okay, so the "over" and "under" portions of the piloting experience may be brief, but there's no doubt they're thrilling. The Seabreacher is powered by a 260-horsepower 1500-cc Rotax four-stroke engine that benefits from a supercharger and intercooler. All that power is used to propel the Seabreacher to speeds of up to 50 miles per hour over the water, or 25 mph when under the surface.

Translogic's Bradley Hasemeyer straps into the passenger seat, which sits directly behind the driver, for an introduction to the Seabreacher's controls. Soon, Hasemeyer gets a shot at the front seat, and the entire experience can be viewed in the clip floating in the shallow end after the jump.

What's the best way to get your motoring kicks for less while consuming zero fuel and emitting only adrenaline? Riding a Zero motorcycle sounds like a lot of fun, until you get to that part about it only having two wheels. A golf cart is only amusing when it's gas-powered and you've stuck a tee in the governor. The answer lies somewhere in between, and George Fortin from San Clemente, California, has put together his own version of the solution.

Our friends at Translogic paid Fortin a visit because he's the proud owner and creator of the Z-Kart. It's an all-electric go-kart that rides on a quartet of motorcycle tires and is powered by a DC motor and four lead-acid batteries. The frame is built from recycled polyethylene, and Fortin built it himself from scratch. Total charge time for the Z-Kart is just three hours from a 110v outlet.

According to Fortin, the Z-Kart is capable of exceeding 50 miles per hour. However, he changed the gearing to bring it back down to a more-reasonable 40 mph. The differential in the Z-Kart was taken from a small off-road buggy, and the engine feeds juice to the wheels via a chain drive and jack shaft.

Translogic's Bradley Hasemeyer chats with George about his creation before taking the Z-Kart out for a spin. Check out the electric action in the video after the jump.

Our in-company pals at Translogic decided it was time to add a new stamp to their passports. They gathered up their video equipment and hopped on a plane. Destination: Japan!

Bradley Hasemeyer and the Translogic team descended upon the Asian island nation to film a multi-part adventure, exploring different facets of the unique culture. First up on the agenda is the subject of modification. Hasemeyer kicks his trip off by checking out a group of folks who love tricking out their scooters. The mods add up quickly and the 250cc "Big Scooters" are fitted with everything from neon lighting to full air suspension setups.

Moving on from the new-school world of scooter modding, Translogic examines the more classic Kaido Racer scene. This very unique styling endeavor gets its inspiration from the old-school FIA Group 5 racing league that included such legendary cars as the Porsche 917, Ferrari 512 and the Ford GT40 Mk 1. Now, the Japanese have obviously taken serious liberties in their own four-wheeled homages, but the result is a style that is nothing if not distinct.

After scaling up from scooters to cars, Hasemeyer gets even bigger and shifts his focus to the van modding world. Starting with such a large canvas, the Japanese van culture goes absolutely crazy and transform their vans into creations that defy explanation. You'll have to hop the jump and watch the video to see the owners explain their obsessions.

Our brethren over at AOL Autos have just launched a new video series called Translogic. Hosted by the always-effervescent Bradley Hasemeyer, who we're convinced is somehow related to J.D. Roth, and the equally bubbly Caitlin Thompson, Translogic's goal is to introduce viewers to the cool, techy side of transportation in four weekly installments that add up to one mondo episode per month. You'll also be able to subscribe to the larger monthly episodes in iTunes once they complete the first four installments.

They've already released episodes 1.1 and 1.2, which you can view over at the Translogic website. In the duo's first two outings, Bradley and Caitlin visit Tesla, get a ride in an Ariel Atom (we know what that's like), talk to the man behind the Velozzi turbine-powered green supercar, and explore one of our all-time favorite topics: jet packs.

Head on over to check them out and let us know what you think in the comments. The AOL Autos team reads Autoblog everyday just like you and would appreciate some thoughtful suggestions from the community on how to keep improving Translogic.
