A vast majority of hotels frown upon smoking inside the building these days, but Brad Keselowski doesn't follow the rules. During his introduction at the 2013 MiilerCoors Distribution Convention, the reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup champion smoked the tires of his Miller-sponsored Ford Fusion stock car, adding a pair of thick, black stripes to the carpeting of the Marriott World Center's conference room.

This definitely isn't a high-quality video, but it's the perfect vantage point to watch Keselowski lay down some rubber and receive a well-deserved standing ovation after pulling up in front of the crowd. Check out the short-but-sweet video posted below.
Continue reading Watch NASCAR racer Brad Keselowski do a burnout... in a hotel conference room

Watch NASCAR racer Brad Keselowski do a burnout... in a hotel conference room originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 08 Mar 2013 19:15:00 EST.
It's been a huge month, leading up to the Super Bowl of NASCAR, the Daytona 500. This is the first year of the new Car of Tomorrow, the "Gen Six" car, and all of the drivers have been trying to figure out its intricacies. The Ford Fusion and Chevrolet NASCAR SS has joined the field and its street-legal equivalent, the SS, was introduced. A huge wreck in the Nationwide Series race the day before the Daytona 500 tore a car in half, tore a hole in the fence, sent car parts flying into the crowd and injured some 33 spectators.

And then, of course, making just her 11th Sprint Cup Series start, there was Danica Patrick on pole position. She'd lead the way for the 43 cars on the grid to start the 200 laps of the 2.5-mile oval called the Daytona International Speedway, with its five-story-high turns banked at 31 degrees and the 3,000-foot front stretch banked at 18 degrees.

Perhaps all that excitement is why James Franco, the honorary race starter there to promote Disney's new film, Oz the Great and Powerful, yelled "Drivers, and Danica, start your engines!" to begin the 65th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship...
Continue reading Race Recap: 2013 Daytona 500 runs 200 laps, six of them count [spoilers]

Race Recap: 2013 Daytona 500 runs 200 laps, six of them count [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 24 Feb 2013 22:40:00 EST.
Dodge is leaving NASCAR on a high note. The automaker snagged the 2012 Sprint Cup series championship on Sunday when Penske and Brad Keselowski took the checkered flag at the Ford EcoBoost 400 at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. The championship win marks the fifth such title for Dodge and the company's first since 1975. That last championship victory came at the hands of none other than Richard Petty.

That's a long time, but Penske has been waiting a spell for its first series win, too. The team first entered the NASCAR Sprint Cup series in 1972 but never quite managed to seal the deal. In 1993, Rusty Wallace brought the team as close as it ever came: second place. But after overcoming a few mechanical issues early in the season, Keselowski and Penske stayed consistent enough to see themselves seeded fourth in the Chase. After taking the checkers at Chicagoland, Keselowski became an early favorite for the win, and his performance at Homestead-Miami sealed the deal.
It would seem Gaia herself did not want the 54th running of the Daytona 500 to take place. After being delayed more than 24 hours by water falling from the sky in the form of rain, fire threatened to end the race early with just 40 laps to go when Juan Pablo Montoya slammed his car into a jet dryer truck under caution. Watch the video of the incident after the jump.

The jet dry truck, which is basically a heavy duty pickup with a helicopter jet engine attached, burst into flames on impact, spilling hundreds of gallons of burning jet fuel and diesel onto the raceway. Fortunately, both Montoya and the driver of the jet dryer truck were not seriously hurt, but the burning fuel threatened to end the Daytona 500 after 160 laps.

Twitter had a field day with the incident. The account @NASCARJetDryer tweeted "The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated..., #imaight!" Brad Keselowski tweeted his view of the fire from behind the wheel of his No. 2 Miller Light Dodge Charger on an iPhone, which he actually had with him in the car. Fortunately the entire field was parked under a red flag at the time. Our favorite tweet came from @SpeedSportLife, which commented on the direction Montoya took to hit the jet dryer truck: "See what happens NASCAR drivers turn right???"
Continue reading Spoiler Alert: Despite the elements, Daytona 500 finally finishes [w/video]

Spoiler Alert: Despite the elements, Daytona 500 finally finishes [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 28 Feb 2012 01:04:00 EST.
NASCAR handed down its ruling yesterday on Carl Edwards' retaliatory wreck of Brad Keselowski during the Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway last Sunday. The Roush Fenway Racing team driver will be subjected to a three-race probation that covers the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway on March 21, the Goody's Fast Pain Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway on March 28 and the Subway Fresh Fit 600 at Phoenix International Raceway on April 10.

What does probation mean for Edwards? Not a whole hell of a lot. The best description we could find of this peculiar punishment was "little more than monitoring actions." That is to say, unlike a suspension, Edwards will race the next three Sprint Cup races. The fact that Edwards won't face much consequence for his actions last Sunday is in keeping with what NASCAR officials said in January about putting more responsibility in the hands of the driver. That said, NASCAR president Mike Helton remarked that, "... there is a line you can cross. When you cross that line in our opinion, we're going to get involved with you."

In addition to the probation, NASCAR plans on getting Edwards and Keselowski in a room together along with team owners Jack Roush and Roger Penske to iron out this feud. We don't know about you, but that sounds close enough to the plot of Days of Thunder that an epic rental car race on the beach is almost certain to occur on the way to dinner afterwards.

NASCAR had said it wanted a return this season to the bad boy days of oval racing where drivers settled disputes on the track rather than saying "Aw, shucks" in front of the camera afterward. On Sunday, America's favorite motorsport got what it asked for when Carl Edwards used his No. 99 Roush Fenway Ford to intentionally wreck Brad Keselowski and his No. 12 Dodge on Lap 323 of the Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The two were traveling around 190 miles per hour at the time when a tap from side by Edwards sent Keselowski's car airborne and crashing into the outside wall. On-air commentators quickly noticed in replays that the white gloves worn by Edwards made a quick, sharp turn of the wheel towards Keselowski's car right before the crash. At the time of the wreck, Keselowski was headed for his first top-10 finish of the season.

The incident has sparked questions about whether retaliation on the track has gone too far in NASCAR. And while Edwards has been painted by many in the press as the bad boy in this situation, Keselowski has a reputation as a wrecker himself. Earlier in Sunday's race on Lap 40, he clipped Edwards car on Turn 2. Long before that, Keselowski had spun Edwards last April at Talladega on the final lap to secure a victory, a wreck that caused some injuries in the grandstand as well. Keselowski's other feuds with Denny Hamlin and Juan Pablo Montoya are also well known.

Edwards reportedly admitted to officials after the race that the wreck was intentional, though he did not expect Keselowski's car to go airborne. The affable Aflac spokesman may be suspended for a race, though NASCAR officials have said they would take their time to investigate the incident before making a decision. Follow the jump to see the crash in question as it happened and make your mind for yourself: Did Edwards go too far, or did Keselowski have it coming?

Most NASCAR fans love a good crash, because there are few things in sports more spectacular than flying metal at 200 mph. Crashes are far less exciting (downright scary) when debris from those crashes make it into the stands, as seven race-goers at Talladega can attest.

Carl Edwards' car was clipped by Brad Keselowski on the last lap of the race, sending the number 99 Ford into the fence. Kaselowski was in Edwards' draft on the last lap, and when he made his move to take the checkered flag, Edwards tried to block too late, resulting in a massive wreck. Keselowski won the race in a finish for the ages, but the resulting crash shows just how dangerous 200 mph racecars can be.

The wreck could have been far worse if it weren't for an amazing new fence that kept the Edwards car from killing scores of onlookers. Instead, five of the injuries were not considered to be serious, while the other two weren't considered life threatening, with one woman reportedly suffering a broken jaw.

Just as impressive as the minimal injuries and Edwards' ability to extricate himself from the car unscathed, was this finish. In true Ricky Bobby style, Edwards removed himself from his wrecked race car and ran to the finish. Well played. Hat tip to Leonard!

[Source: MSNBC]
Continue reading REPORT: Seven NASCAR fans injured at Talladega in Carl Edwards crash [w/VIDEO]

REPORT: Seven NASCAR fans injured at Talladega in Carl Edwards crash [w/VIDEO] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 27 Apr 2009 10:02:00 EST.
