If we're being completely honest, we haven't exactly been in love with the aesthetics of the sixth-generation Mercedes-Benz SL-Class. It's mostly a front-end issue, with its glowering eagle-eye headlamps and upright, dinner-plate-sized Three-Pointed Star coming across to us as overwrought. That's particularly troublesome for a roadster whose history has of the most elegant designs of all time in its back catalog. Somehow, the new R231 generation's brash visuals seem more at home on this Brabus 800 Roadster to us.

That's probably because the high-dollar German tuner has turned up the wick on the SL's visuals even further, with carbon fiber bodywork, a more aggressive aero kit, matte hood scoop and complex two-finish wheels. It's all-the-way committed to its brashness, in other words - and justifiably so. Anything with 800 horsepower and 1,047 pound-feet of torque has earned the right to look however it wants, right?

Brabus started with the SL65 and its not-exactly-underpowered 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12, and went to town, fitting their own turbocharger and intercooler system, along with a less-restrictive exhaust system with driver-selectable sound levels and new engine electronics. The result is a 3.7-second 0-62 mph time, an electronically limited top whack of 217 mph... and one seriously compromised toupée.
Continue reading Brabus 800 Roadster is a power-mad aristocrat

Brabus 800 Roadster is a power-mad aristocrat originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 06 Mar 2013 08:29:00 EST.
At no point during our recent drive of the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG did we ever think, "You know, this thing sure is slow." After all, Merc's range-topping SL comes fitted with a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 capable of sending 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. But just in case you're still all "meh" about what the SL65 throws down, Brabus will gladly come to your rescue with this, the 800 Roadster.

As its name suggests, the 800 Roadster ups the V12's power figures to 800 horsepower and - wait for it - 1,047 pound-feet of torque. Don't get too excited, though - that torque number has been electronically limited to a measly 811 lb-ft since, you know, the transmission would probably explode if you tried to put the full force through it. Nevertheless, these represent increases of 79 hp and 73 lb-ft over the standard SL65, and that means the 800 Roadster can shoot to 62 miles per hour in just 3.7 seconds - two-tenths of a second quicker than the Merc its based on. More impressively, hitting 124 mph takes just under 10 seconds, and the droptop will finally top out at an electronically limited - limited! - 217 mph. Holy smokes.

To manage all of that speed, Brabus has engineered a special carbon fiber aero kit that reduces lift, and a unique control module for the SL65's active body control suspension lowers the ride height by one full inch. The 800 Roadster rides on new 20-inch wheels, and a unique limited-slip rear differential was added, featuring a 40 percent locking rate that further enhances performance when you're attempting to control the beast at its limits. Interior upgrades include new leather and alcantara surfaces throughout the cabin, including a leather-clad trunk.

Brabus will be showing off the new 800 Roadster as part of next week's Geneva Motor Show festivities. As for pricing, it hasn't been divulged as of this writing, but it isn't like the standard SL65 is all that attainable, so...
Continue reading Brabus to storm Geneva with 800-hp version of Mercedes SL65 AMG

Brabus to storm Geneva with 800-hp version of Mercedes SL65 AMG originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Feb 2013 08:00:00 EST.
Brabus has completed its makeover program for the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake, with resultant menu ranging from a quick spruce to an all-day overhaul good for 619 horsepower, 737 pound-feet of torque and a top speed of 200 miles per hour.

An aero kit is involved, naturally, and if you thought the slippery wagon was finicky looking before, the Brabus tweaks won't change your mind. The front spoiler lip, sport fenders and wraparound skirting have been engineered to fit on any wagon with or without the AMG bodykit. The Bilstein-developed suspension offerings begin with sport springs, or you can grab all the pork with a completely new suspension that lowers the car by 35 millimeters. Wheels range in size from 17- to 20-inches, in six different designs.

Every engine flavor on the Mercedes-Benz stylewagon is looked after; the diesel CLS250 and 350 CDI BlueEfficiency getting modest and easily installed upgrades that also maintain the Shooting Brake's various driving modes. In Sport mode the 350 CDI can get from standstill to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. Gas is where it's at, though, the CLS500 BlueEfficiency getting worked up to 500 hp and 531 lb-ft and a top speed of 186 mph. There are a further two tuning choices for the CLS63 AMG, the top-flight option unleashing 619 ponies, 737 lb-ft, the double-ton terminal velocity and a 0-62 mph run of 4.2 seconds.

The press release below has more information, the high-res gallery above has the star of the show.
Continue reading Brabus goes to work on Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake

Brabus goes to work on Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Oct 2012 11:33:00 EST.
Hard to believe, but BRABUS and Smart have been building cars together for 10 years now. Worldwide, more than 50,000 customized cars have been built by the team. To celebrate, the two are producing just 100 specially-equipped cars.

The 10th Anniversary model starts with a smart fortwo BRABUS with the 102hp turbocharged engine. The car is then slathered in liquid silver paint and given titanium-look headlamp surrounds and red BRABUS logos.

Inside, passengers get heated, hand-stitched, black leather seats with 10th Anniversary logos, red trim bits and a dash badge noting the car's serial number. The car's start button is integrated into the shifter.

If you're looking to give your Mercedes-Benz an added dose of performance, look no further than Brabus. The aftermarket tuning house specializes in customizing Daimler's finest, and doesn't stop at upgrading the engine and running gear, either. With packages like the iBusiness suite, Brabus will turn your S-Class, for example, into a 219-mph high-tech office on wheels. In other words, it'll make it more like a private jet. But what if you want your jet to feel more like your customized Mercedes? Brabus can help with that, too.

The new Brabus Private Aviation division is set up in response to customer demand and follows a similar project launched recently to outfit yacht interiors. It allows discerning and well-heeled clients to either retrofit the cabins of their existing private jets or commission the accoutrements to be fitted to new aircraft direct from whatever aerospace concern is building their new private jet.
The focus is on both luxury and business capabilities, which Brabus is currently displaying with two concepts at the European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition in Geneva.
If given the choice, we'd grab the keys to an all-electric Smart ForTwo way before its gasoline-powered sibling, if for no other reason than it would mean we wouldn't have to put up with that horrid automated manual transmission. But such faint praise isn't really fair to the Brabus Electric Drive. After all, it's got 80 horsepower on tap, which is plenty for the little urban runabout, and its 100 pound-feet of torque ought to be available from zero rpm.

Brabus has also seen fit to lower the Smart ED 10 millimeters closer to the pavement, which, along with the 16-inch front and 17-inch rear monoblock wheels, should improve the way it handles. Less convincing an upgrade is the onboard sound generator... though perhaps one strategically pulled fuse might make short work of that oversight.

Here's an age-old recipe for awesome pie: Take one small chassis, add one massive engine, sprinkle with forced induction and serve smoking hot. Brabus has followed that recipe to the letter with the new Bullit Coupe 800 unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.

The brawny C-Class features a bored-out version of the 5.5-liter V12 that typically powers the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. With 6.3 liters of displacement and two turbos shoving air down the engine's throat, the car is good for a limited 800 horsepower and 811 pound-feet of torque. If Brabus could have found a transmission capable of standing up to the ludicrous amount of power on tap, the car would be spitting out 1,047 lb-ft. With its wings clipped, the meanest C-Class of them all still manages to hit 62 mph in around 3.7 seconds.

Just when you thought matte black paint had grown stale, Brabus builds a car worthy of the hue. Look below for the full press release.
Continue reading Brabus Bullit Coupe 800 is German for "hot rod"

Brabus Bullit Coupe 800 is German for "hot rod" originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 06 Mar 2012 20:29:00 EST.
Brabus has taken the time to work over the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe in the company's trademark over-the-top style. The result is the Brabus Bullit Coupe, which is headed for a debut at the Geneva Motor Show this week, complete with an 800-horsepower version of the same V12 found under the hood of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. That kind of craziness is so beautiful, it almost brings a tear to our eye.

The engineers at Brabus bored out the block to 6.3 liters of displacement, up from 5.5 liters in factory form. Throw in a pair of turbos and you have a vehicle capable of dumping a staggering 1,047 pound-feet of torque on the rear tires.

Or at least you would if Brabus didn't have to electronically limit final output to 811 lb-ft of torque. The company says there simply isn't a transmission out there capable of standing up to that kind of twist. Even with the limited grunt, the Bullit Coupe can pop off a 0-62 mph run in 3.7 seconds on its way to a top speed of 229 mph. Pure brilliance.
Continue reading Brabus bringing 800-HP "Bullit" C-Class Coupe to Geneva

Brabus bringing 800-HP "Bullit" C-Class Coupe to Geneva originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 05 Mar 2012 11:29:00 EST.
The Smart Brabus electric drive Fortwo will be available in 12 countries by the end of the year. Parent company Daimler notes the model will include touches such as 17-inch alloy wheels, an "electric green" interior. The diminutive runabout will deliver about 80 horsepower, though the German automaker hasn't specified a single-charge range.

Meanwhile, Smart's Brabus ebike will have an electric motor that will deliver 500 watts of power, enough for a top speed of 25 miles per hour. It will also be available at Smart dealers by the end of the year. Smart isn't disclosing pricing on either the Brabus ForTwo EV or the new ebike but you can see both in our gallery.

Last month, Smart said it would start selling a special-edition version called the Sharpred in Europe starting this May. Smart will offer the red and black model in 71- and 84-horsepower versions in both hardtop and convertible configurations, and will make 1,800 Sharpreds.

Daimler last year sold about 102,000 Smart vehicles globally in 2011. While that number marked a 4.6 percent increase over 2010, Smart vehicles accounted for just 7.5 percent of all Daimler cars sold in 2011.
The German aftermarket specialists at Brabus have entered the eco battle with the unveiling of a prototype EV based on the Mercedes-Benz E-Class at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. Rather than extracting more power out of the E-Class' gasoline engine, Brabus decided to rip out the gasser and replace it with electric-only hardware.

The prototype gets a suitably subtle and sexy name - the High Performance 4WD Full Electric - with "Performance" referring to the E's impressive 429 horsepower and 2,360 pound-feet of torque and "4WD" implying each wheel is fitted with a Protean electric motor. Lastly, Brabus' prototype packs a monstrous 56-kWh lithium-ion battery pack to provide the juice.

The HP4FE is capable of scooting from 0 to 62 miles per hour in 6.9 seconds and can keep on blasting on down the road for up to 217 miles (at a constant speed of 62 mph) before that massive battery pack becomes fully depleted. Brabus says the prototype tops out at 137 mph in Sport mode, or 118 mph in Eco mode.

But being a Brabus, exterior enhancements are a must and besides its slightly modified body, the prototype E-Class sits on 19-inch wheels wrapped in performance rubber. As for price, Brabus says the prototype isn't for sale... yet. Follow the jump for full details on this torque-laden electric machine.
Continue reading Brabus reveals prototype High Performance 4WD Full Electric E-Class

Brabus reveals prototype High Performance 4WD Full Electric E-Class originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 08:59:00 EST.
Brabus has been making supersedans out of Mercedes-Benz four-doors since 1996 when it introduced the first E V12 that could only go 205 miles per hour. With each successive sedan, the German tuner managed to inch that top speed ever higher until recently when it claimed a top speed of 230 mph for the latest E V12 based on the current generation E-Class. As it goes with the standard cars, whatever the E-Class gets can't be far behind for the CLS-Class. And so Brabus has introduced its second CLS-based super saloon, the Rocket 800, at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show sporting the same mechanicals as the latest E V12.

What that means is stuffing a twin-turbocharged (or biturbo, as the Europeans call it) version of the V12 engine that Mercedes uses in its 600-Series cars into the welcoming bay of a CLS. The monster motor has had its capacity increased from 5.5 liters to a more a generous 6.3, which helps it produce the car's namesake 800 horsepower. Torque is also up to a claimed maximum of 1,047 pound-feet that's electronically limited to 811 lb-ft, which we presume is to prevent the powertrain from annihilating itself. Backed by a seven-speed automatic, Brabus' own limited-slip diff and a range of final drive ratios, the Rocket 800 can reach an ultimate speed of more than 230 mph in certain configuaration, but is limited to just 217 mph for on-road excursions. 0-62 mph happens in just 3.7 seconds.

Of course, to be a Brabus you have to look the part, and the Rocket 800's exterior is adorned with all manner of carbon fiber filigree that performs the very real task of directing air where it needs to go (either into the engine or across a spoiler to keep the car planted). It looks suitably more menacing than a standard CLS or even the AMG model, but not so garish that you wouldn't want to be seen in one - something we haven't always been able to say about Brabus products.

Smart has teamed with Swedish clothing firm WeSC to create the special edition Smart Brabus tailor (yes, another one), and it's scheduled to be revealed at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. It's powered by a 101-horsepower turbocharged gasoline engine and features a matte and high-gloss golden exterior from Brabus. The tailor-made Fortwo gets jet black alloys and a body kit.

Inside, the Smart Brabus by WeSC gets standard air conditioning, leather seats and a leather steering wheel. WeSC has even designed special headphones that give a "nod to the car's look, as can be seen in the perforated black ear pads and high-gloss golden highlights," according to Smart.

The special edition Fortwo and WeSC-designed headphones will be available starting in spring of 2012, but Brabus is taking advanced orders for the car and its questionable aesthetics right about... now, though we don't have any delusions that it will be available in the States.
Continue reading Smart Fortwo Brabus by WeSC gets two-tone gold treatment and its own headphones

Smart Fortwo Brabus by WeSC gets two-tone gold treatment and its own headphones originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 09 Sep 2011 15:44:00 EST.
The 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show is nearly upon us, which means automakers will be trotting out more new or updated models in the coming weeks. Brabus, while not a major automaker, will also be there, and it's bringing something an all-new creation to further its stable of insanely fast machines. We don't have any details to spill regarding this latest Brabus bullet, but the tuning house has just released this photo to tease our emotions.

Judging by that headlight and side mirror, we're going to assume that Brabus has applied its wrenches to the 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG. Brabus has built ludicrious-speed-capable CLS sedans in the past, and it appears the German tuner will add a new version to its fleet.

Stay tuned for more information, as we'll be certain to find this car when we touch ground in Germany.
Brabus teases Frankfurt show car originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 29 Aug 2011 15:30:00 EST.
Black Series? Who needs one when you've got Brabus? Try this on for size: 0-62 in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 231 mph. In a four-seat E-Class convertible.

So, how did the German tuning house manage to convert a boulevard cruiser into a certified bruiser? Well, for starters, they took the V12 from the Mercedes-Benz S600, gave it a whole mess of new moving parts and breathing gear, quad intercoolers, bored it out from 5.5 liters to 6.3 and dropped it into the E-Cab's engine bay.

The result is 800 metric horsepower (788 by US standards) to make this the most powerful and the fastest four-seat convertible on the market. Of course it's a rather lofty market, at €478,000 ($680k), but with all that power and attention to detail to go with it, can you really be surprised? Not as surprised as the owner of that Black Series AMG will be when you and three of your best friends go ripping by in the left lane.
Hard as it might seem to believe from its decidedly more spartan packaging, the Smart ForTwo is made by the same people responsible for the Maybach limousine and countless Mercedes-Benz luxury automobiles. But as seems to be the craze these days, the Daimler city car division has teamed up with a British clothing label called Boxfresh for a substantially more luxurious version.

The special one-off starts with a Brabus-spec cabrio, packing 31 more horsepower than standard for 101 - not exactly earth-shattering output numbers here, but a lot for such a tiny car. Boxfresh has resprayed it in what looks like a matte gunmetal finish; the interior is swathed in a rather sumptuous-looking tan leather. A heavy twill canvas folding roof tops it all off.

As you can see from the many artful close-ups in our image gallery, the attention to detail looks immaculate. We dare not ask how much such a trim job cost. This is, after all, a one-off for the time being, with the commercially-available product of their collaboration set to be announced later this year.

One way or another, it's not likely to make the jump Stateside - we just hope this isn't what Brabus was hiding under the tarp in that video from last week.
Smart Fortwo gets the deluxe treatment from Boxfresh originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 Jun 2011 18:29:00 EST.
Of all the auto marques on the market, Smart isn't exactly the first we'd associate with high performance. That's where Brabus comes in.

The longtime Mercedes-Benz tuner has emerged as something like Smart's own AMG - that is to say, the factory-approved tuning house of choice - offering an array of aftermarket accessories for the diminutive city cars. But once in a while, Brabus also cranks out something truly unique.

In 2003, Brabus squeezed a twin-turbo V6 into the Smart Roadster. In 2006, Brabus followed up with the ForFour Race Concept that turned the ill-fated four-door Smart into a veritable hot hatch.

Brabus was keen to show it off for the official Smart website in the UK, and in the process hinted at the next show car coming down the road. Hard to say what it is, since all we see is a tarp, but considering that the ForFour and Roadster have long since kicked the bucket, it's fairly safe to assume it's based on the ForTwo - the core Smart product and the last remaining model Brabus hasn't yet tinkered with to the same extent. Follow the jump to see for yourself.
Continue reading Brabus teases new Smart concept, we scratch our heads

Brabus teases new Smart concept, we scratch our heads originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 Jun 2011 18:59:00 EST.
The Smart brand, looking for a sales lift in China, has enlisted the lanky likes of Kobe Bryant for its "Big, In The City" ad campaign. A newly released video has the internationally known NBA star assuming the role of a quick thinking/driving man of both style and action with a keen sense of aim.

With the aid of a shiny black Smart Fortwo Brabus that he - or perhaps a stunt double - throws around corners and through traffic, Kobe comes to the aid of a damsel in distress with flair as he chases down an art thief and utilizes his on-court abilities to administer a chase-ending coup de grâce.

The campaign will reportedly undertake a 25-city Chinese road trip, the highlight of which is an appearance by the Los Angeles Lakers star at a Smart customer party in July. Hit the jump for some Smart Brabus and Bryant action.
Brabus iBusiness 2.0 - Click above for high-res image gallery

Brabus does bonkers. So when it decided to cook up the latest iteration of its rolling ode to executive connectivity, it went all out - both under the hood and inside the leather-clad cabin - so lets work from the inside out.

The conversion of the rather staid Mercedes-Benz S-Class into the Brabus "iBusiness 2.0" begins in the boot, with a Mac Mini mounted in a leather-lined tray inside the trunk. The Mac connects up with a 15.2-inch TFT, 16:9 aspect ratio display that mechanically unfolds from the alcantara-coated headliner and can also be used as an auxiliary display for the - not one, but two - iPad 2s mounted in the electronically deployed and adjustable custom tables mounted behind the two front seats. The tables secure both the tablets and a Apple Bluetooth keyboard, and allow the Russian mobster in back to chat with his Swedish princess over Apple's Facetime video conferencing system.

Naturally, all this tech isn't any good without solid connectivity, and to that end, Brabus has fitted the S with a WiFi network comprised of UMTS and HDSPA networking to wireless wire everything together. More impressive, the German tuner developed a custom app for the iPads that allows backseat passengers to control every aspect of Mercedes' COMAND infotainment system. Jeeves will not be pleased...

When it's time to crank up the tunes, a 64-gig Apple iPod Touch is mounted in the rear center console and sends music to either the standard S-Class sound system or a pair of Sennheiser Noise Gard headphones, which can also be used to plumb in one of a few hundred channels provided by the wireless DVBT television receiver.

And naturally, since this is Brabus, the package wouldn't be complete without a serious dose of pavement-pummeling power. The Brabus 800 iBusiness 2.0 lives up to its name with 800 horsepower and 1,047 pound-feet of torque pulled from the twin-turbocharged V12, shuttling the S to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and on to an electronically-limited top speed of 219 mph. If you're less interested in the power and more enthralled by the tech, Brabus is offering the complete iBusiness 2.0 package for any S-Class - from the lowly S 350 to the aforementioned S 65 - but if you take your life on the road seriously, why opt for anything less? Full details in the press blast after the break.

It's become quite clear that Mansory and Fab Design should leave SLS-tuning to the experts. Brabus has pulled back the wraps on its 700 Biturbo, and the results are <strike>pants-tightening</strike> impressive.

Brabus has taken the 6.2-liter SLS AMG V8 and attached a pair of turbochargers to the already-excellent mill. Output has gone from 563 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, up to 700-hp and 626 lb-ft of torque. Brabus has also gone ahead and changed the intake and exhaust manifolds, engine mapping and exhaust system on the Mercedes-Benz flagship.

In fact, Brabus has gotten down to the nitty-gritty with its 700 Biturbo at the Geneva Motor Show. Traditionally, twin-turbocharged engines have a pair of turbos both spinning in the same direction. Brabus has fitted a right-turning and left-turning exhaust to the respective sides of the engine, and this allows for optimal air flow into the engine.

All of this work has produced a luxurious grand tourer that hits 0-62 miles per hour in 3.7 seconds, and can run on to top speed of 213 mph. Brabus has managed to do all of this without slapping on eye-searing paint an ill-advised body kit (though obviously there's an extensive bit of aero-tweakery present), and for that, we thank them. (Next time, though, maybe we can find someone around to close the hood...)

Brabus has released its tuning package for the 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS range ahead of its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show. As with all things Brabus, the package for the CLS leaves no stone unturned, from an aero and appearance package to the suspension and, finally, the engine.

Outside, the car gets a revised front bumper with bigger air intakes, new LED daytime running lights and a front splitter. There's also a set of gilled fenders sporting the Brabus logo and side skirts that give the car the appearance of an even lower stance and helpful entry lights so you don't bash a shin at night.

Keeping things stuck to the ground is a Bilstein suspension supporting your choice of six styles of Brabus rollers, ranging from 8.5x17s to monster 10.5x20-inch trash-can lids. In a bid for the eco vote, Brabus has focused its tuning efforts on the Mercedes-Benz BlueEfficiency diesel engines. The CLS 250 CDI BlueEfficiency gets a 31-horsepower bump and an astonishing 413 pound feet of torque.

On the higher-spec CLS 350 CDI, the engine mods are dual-mode. In eco mode, the car gets pushed to 509 lb-ft from 457, while horsepower stays the same. Hit the sport mode button, and you're looking at climbing to 309 hp from 261. That translates into a 5.9-second 0-60 sprint and the inevitable 155 mile per hour top speed. Want more? See the complete press release after the break and be sure to peruse our high-res image gallery below.
