Times are tough for the Porsche family. Amidst the merger with Volkswagen, their company just suffered a $6.6 billion loss. But we didn't think things were this bad for the descendants of Ferdinand Porsche until Bonhams announced they would be liquidating that family's watch collection to the highest bidder.

Okay, we're exaggerating just a bit. The Porsche family stands to make a lot of money out of the Volkswagen merger, and the collection is being auctioned off for charity. And while we have no idea what charity that is, we have to assume it's not the Porsche family themselves.

As it turns out, the family's interests extend beyond the automobile. Not only does their Porsche Design Group have its own range of watches, but some fourteen years ago they bought Eterna, one of the largest independent watchmakers in Switzerland. Eterna fabricates Porsche Design watches as well as their own brand, and several of the rarest examples will be included along with others among the 49 watches crossing the auction block on December 2 in London.

Among those pieces Bonhams is highlight are included a rare 18kt gold Porsche Design prototype and an Eterna presented to family scion Ferdinand Oliver Porsche on his 40th birthday, along with rare timepieces from Rolex and Omega as well as Panerai (which makes watches for arch-rival Ferrari), Jaeger LeCoultre (which partners with Aston Martin) and Breitling (in league with Bentley). Follow the jump for further details, and check out the images in the gallery below.
Bentley Art Project - Click above for high-res image gallery

Here's what we love about Bentley. While workers at other automakers sit around and scratch their butts in their growing downtime, at Crewe, they put their spare time to good use. Back in March, we brought you news that Bentley's craftsmen were crafting bespoke furniture while they waited for production to pick back up. Now the British automaker has put its designers to work creating works of art.

The pool of artists in Bentley's styling department were given a broad mandate to create artwork inspired by their workplace, and 22 transformed everything from canvas to plexiglass, bronze to leather into an impressive array of pieces, all of which you can view in our high-resolution gallery below.

The collection will be auctioned off by Bonhams on December 1 to benefit The Christie cancer research center in Manchester. Full detail in the press release after the jump.

Bonhams at the Quail 2009 - The Auto Union didn't sell

The Bonhams Auction at the Quail in Monterey was expected to bring some of the biggest auction numbers of the week. It did end up bringing some large figures, but mainly in the number of unsold headlining cars. We were eagerly anticipating the bidding on the Auto Union Type D, the ex-Evel Knievel Ferrari Daytona Spider, The ZL-1 Camaro, and the 1937 Bugatti Type 57S Coupé among others. None sold. The Auto Union bidding stalled at $6 mil, while the featured Bugatti hesitated long enough at $5.2 mil that it also went unsold. Altogether, 45 lots didn't sell. What did sell did reasonably well though.

There's a full list of results after the jump, but the top seller was the The ex-William Boyd "Hopalong Cassidy", unique coachwork,1933 Duesenberg Model J Torpedo Convertible Victoria that went out the door for $1,437,000. Other notable sales included a trio of cars that went at $804,500 each: the 1952 Ferrari 212 Inter Vignale Coupe "Bumblebee," an ex-Otis Chandler,1961 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster, and a 1931 Bentley 4½ Liter 'Birkin Style' Tourer with original Supercharger. Other favorites were the 1975 BMW 3.0 CSL 'Batmobile' that sold for $150,000, the 1981 BMW M1 that went for $147,800, and the pristine 1987 Buick GNX that brought $70,200.

The history of the notorious Silver Arrow racers parallels that of the nation which bore its birth. In the years leading up to WWII, Adolf Hitler was bent on world conquest - not just on the battlefield, but on the race track as well. Convinced that motor racing was the perfect venue to exhibit what he viewed as Germany's superiority, the Fuhrer commissioned Germany's top engineers at both Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union to develop a generation of advanced racing machines that would later become known as the Silver Arrows. The 1938 Auto Union D-Type was Hitler's favorite.

The cars reigned victorious in the 1930s, but with the outbreak of the war, racing in Europe ground to a halt. The following decade Nazi Germany lay in ruins, Hitler was dead, and the Soviets seized the D-Types from the Auto Union factory in East Germany. With an Iron Curtain cutting off contact between the Soviet Bloc and the Western world, enthusiasts and historians were convinced the Silver Arrows remained intact somewhere in the Communist empire, but all the while they were being brutally dismantled. Although many of the Mercedes pre-war racers survived, few of the Auto Unions did. Only three of these D-Types are known to remain intact.

The example you see here, Chassis 19, was painstakingly restored to original condition, and was set to hit the auction block at Christie's two years ago until it was withdrawn at the last minute due to unanswered questions over its heritage and provenance. With the questions answered and its pedigree assured, Bonhams is now offering this extremely rare and most desirable piece of automotive history at its upcoming auction at the Quail Lodge this coming August, where it is expected to fetch in excess of $8 million. But with previous estimates having placed it closer to $12 million, it stands a real chance of breaking the $12.2 million record set by the 1957 Ferrari 250 Testarossa at the RM Auction in Maranello just last month. Check out the press release after the jump and the high-res pictures in the gallery below.

Gallery: Auto Union D-Type Silver Arrow

[Source: Bonhams]
Continue reading Auto Union D-Type Silver Arrow back on the auction block at Bonhams in August

Auto Union D-Type Silver Arrow back on the auction block at Bonhams in August originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 04 Jun 2009 18:00:00 EST. To date, the yearly event has generated a whopping £14 million in sales, and with good reason: The auction always features a tempting array of classic British sportscars and such, and this year will be no different. There will be a 1961 Aston Martin DB4 Series III fetching an estimated £100k ($150k), a 1970 DB6 Vantage Volante worth a projected £350k ($530k) and more. One element this year's auction will have that didn't feature in years past, however, are protesters.

Seriously? At a classic car sale? The enthusiasts will be demonstrating against the proposed construction of a Tesco chain supermarket on the site of the old Aston factory there, which they regard as an historically significant site. Aston Martin Lagonda Limited moved its manufacturing facilities to Gaydon in nearby Warwickshire and stopped assembling new Astons at Newport Pagnell when the last Vanquish rolled off the line there in July 2007. Since then, the site has remained home to the Works Service that maintains and restores old Astons and Lagondas, but prestigious as it is, there's only so much space a classics garage needs. Some 2,000 letters of protest against the construction of the supermarket have been sent to date, but the most enthusiastic among the outraged are set to gather at the site this weekend and put on a little show for some of the company's best customers in the hope that the site may be preserved with more dignity than the frozen food section that's planned instead.
Bugattis, Ferraris, an Maseratis are commonly among the blue-chip properties at classic car auctions, but Citroens don't usually rank among the big-ticket items - especially not Seventies models - but at Bonhams' recent Retromobile auction in Paris, one rare Citroen sold for a high bid of 337,500 Euros (about $440k), assumed to be a record for the French marque. The car in question is a rare 1973 DS23, converted by coachbuilder Henri Chapron to a convertible - one of only three DS23 convertibles built, and the only one with fuel injection.

The sleek profile cut by the special drop-top DS prompted Citroen to add a convertible option to their regular catalog, selling 1365 examples over the course of some fifteen years. The sale of this original could hardly have come at a better time, as Citroen prepares to re-enter the premium segment by reviving the DS nameplate, to be previewed next month by the DS3 Inside concept at the Geneva show. Bugatti Atalantes don't come up for sale very often, so when one unused example was unearthed from the garage of the reclusive late Dr. Harold Carr, enthusiasts and collectors alike stood up and took notice. The rare barn find 1937 Type 57S rolled across the Bonhams "Retromobile" auction block in Paris this weekend as scheduled, where it sold to a European collector for the equivalent of $4.4 million. While that may sound like a chunk of change - and certainly is by most standards, especially in this economy - it's only half of the highest estimates placed on the Bugatti's value upon discovery. You can bet that, after decades of neglect, its new owner will put in another hefty sum to have it restored to pristine quality before it starts hitting the concours circuit around the world. Thanks to Zack for the tip.

Gallery: 1937 Bugatti Type 57S Atalante

[Source: AOL]
Bought the Farm: barn-find Bugatti Atalante sells for $4.4M originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 08 Feb 2009 12:06:00 EST.
Close your eyes and imagine opening a deserted garage door, only to find a forgotten four-wheeled treasure sitting there in perfect condition. What would it be? We have a feeling we'll get all sorts of answers in the comments section, but for many enthusiasts, the answer would be, without hesitation, the Bugatti Type 57S Atalante. And that's exactly what the children of the late (and appropriately named) Dr. Harold Carr found in their father's garage.

The Atalante is among the most beautiful, the most coveted and the most iconic of Bugattis ever produced. Not to be confused with the even rarer Atlantic, of which only two of the original three remain in existence, the 57S Atalante was made in a limited run of 17 examples, and a quarter of them are housed in a museum in rural France. This one went missing half a century ago, only now to be found again. It was originally owned by Earl Howe, first president of the British Racing Drivers' Club, and changed hands several times before the reclusive Dr. Carr mothballed it. Estimated values for the car are all over the map, with values as high as £6 million (about $8.8M USD) being discussed. Naturally, as rare as it is for a classic like this to change hands, its real value will be determined by how much a well-heeled collector is willing to pay for it when it rolls onto the block in February at Bonhams' "Retromobile" auction in Paris. Follow the jump for all the details.

Gallery: 1937 Bugatti Type 57S Atalante

[Source: UK Telegraph; Bonhams]
Continue reading Barn Find of the Decade: 1937 Bugatti Type 57S Atalante

Barn Find of the Decade: 1937 Bugatti Type 57S Atalante originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 02 Jan 2009 07:01:00 EST.
A few weeks ago we would have baulked at the thought of someone paying $7 million for a car, except that some crazy Brit paid a record $10.8 million for a California Spyder last month. Still, it seems like a lot of money to pay for a car, even for this one-off racing prototype Jaguar E2A that Bonhams will be auctioning off in Monterey this August. Undoubtedly the car's biggest draw is its link between the legendary D-Type race cars that won Le Mans three times and the E-Type production cars. It was also driven competitively by Dan Gurney, Walt Hansgen, Jack Brabham, and Bruce McLaren. While we don't know if this will be enough to demand $7 million, we will be on hand in Monterey to bring you the results, as well as additional coverage of all the events during the Pebble Beach weekend in mid-August.Thanks for the tip, Alex!

The oldest Rolls Royce known to be a runner is going up for auction at Bonhams in London on the 3rd of December. It'll cost you somewhere around $4 million, though having more in reserve would be a good plan. Someone else might want to give the old starter handle a whirl. That handle's attached to 103-year-old running gear that was lovingly restored in the 1950s by racer Oliver Langton. Only three owners have dented the leather seat with their backsides over the life of this car, remarkable when you can conjure F-Bodies that've passed through more hands in their short, tragic lives.

[Source: Motor Authority]

Oldest running Roller set to be auctioned originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 19 Oct 2007 12:33:00 EST.
The rain and the champagne have been flowing at Goodwood, and so too have the pounds sterling, evidenced by Bonham's setting a sales record with $12.3 million worth of vintage metal sold. Top honors after six hours of bidding went to a 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C-2300 Spider, for which somebody parted with $2.8 million. Six other cars went for more than $440,000, including Lord Carnegie's 1954 Bentley R-Type Continental that fetched $509,000. In ample demonstration of the bidding fever, even a Leyland transporter went $124,000 -- no less than $100,000 above its estimated sale price. The fifteenth annual Bonham's auction is now in the record books as the fourth most valuable auction the UK has ever seen.

We thought you might like a peak inside the auction tent. A fairly small catalog didn't mean there was a lack of things to see. Check out the gallery for yourself to see the eclectic mix of lots. The 1958 GMC Pickup you see above belonged to one Steve McQueen. Perhaps you've heard of him.

It'll be among a host of other former possessions of McQueen's going up for auction later this week at the Petersen Automotive Museum in L.A. Said to be one of the late actor's favorite personal vehicles, the truck, powered by a 336 CID V8 was given some additional under-the-hood TLC to make it a bit of a sleeper. The "MQ3188" on the tag refers to the ID number assigned McQueen when he was sent to reform school as a boy (in fact, if you go through the different lots being offered, you'll see a few other old vanity tags of McQueen's bearing the same number).

Three vintage motorcycles owned by Steve are also up for grabs, as is the actual '67 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow 2-door he drove in The Thomas Crown Affair.

[Source: Bonhams & Butterfields via Luxist]
Buy Steve McQueen's '58 GMC truck originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Nov 2006 11:07:00 EST.
