The next 1- and 3-Series cars from BMW, as well as the Z2 roadster, are rumored to be getting a new range of turbocharged three- and four-cylinder gasoline engines as part of BMW's push to cut emissions and fuel consumption. Of the five powerplants reportedly in development, three are 1.35-liter three-cylinder motors developing between 163 hp and 241 hp, with the two 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engines putting out 273 hp and 321 hp, respectively. Sky Motoring says that the four-pots will be reserved fo

6BMW working on range of 3-cylinder engines?

According to a report on Sky Motoring in the UK, BMW is working on a new range of 3- and 4-cylinder engines for use in its next-gen 1 Series, 3 Series and Z2 Roadster. If there is indeed an inline-three engine in the pipeline, we'd be shocked to see it installed in BMW's bread-and-butter 3 Series, but it may be plausible for the entry-level 1 Series.

30REPORT: BMW Z2 gets green light, concept headed for Frankfurt

A little more information is out on the BMW Z2 that looks to be shown at this year's Frankfurt Auto Show. According to Auto Bild, the roadster built on the next 1 Series platform will be joined by a coupe variant, just like the previous Z4 – but unlike that car, the Z2 will be a radical rethink.

1BMW Project i fleshed out?

BMW has been making a big deal of its Project I, the aim of which is to launch a new series of fuel-sipping vehicles. We heard about a vehicle called the Megacity the other day, and that's reportedly going to be offered with a hybrid drivetrain. According to Autobild (via 4 Wheels News), there's another model in the pipeline known as the Z2 and it will combine light weight with a turbocharged 1.6L engine mated up with an electric motor to offer 47 miles per gallon (5L/100km). 13Rumormill: BMW Z2 still in the works

Is the rumored little roadster from BMW on track for a 2011 debut? Auto Motor und Sport seems to think so. They even have a rendering by renowned artist Mark Stehrenberger to prove it. If we are to believe the rumors, the BMW Z2 should be closer to what the original Z3 was. That is, more of an entry level roadster to compete with the premium versions of the Mazda MX-5, compared to the more upscale Z4 that just debuted, which is more of a Porsche Boxster rival.

6BMW may build hybrid Z2 compact roadster

Following the upcoming introduction of BMW's new Z4 roadster, the Munich automaker is considering a second, smaller roadster called the Z2. If the Z2 is built, it will likely be derived from the 1-series and - unlike the more powerful Z4 - the smaller car would probably use a four cylinder engine. It's also being reported that the Z2 could get a hybrid drivetrain. If it does, it would likely be the mild hybrid system that will debut in the new 7-series next summer. That system consists of a moto
