<br />
How do you win by failing? Satire, naturally. And that's exactly the tactic that Italian motorcycle manufacturer <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/aprilia">Aprilia</a> is using against World Superbike rival <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/bmw">BMW</a>. Both European manufacturers released brand new literbikes in the same year and have been doing battle both on the sales floor and the race track ever since.<br />
<br />
BMW has proven that it knows how to build a proper sportbike with its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/bmws1000rr">S 1000 RR</a>, coming out of the gates swinging with a 193-horsepower wallop and the most sophisticated electronics package available on the street. The Bavarian company has also shown its marketing chops, most memorably with the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/03/05/video-bmw-s-1000-rr-pulls-off-the-old-tablecloth-trick/">viral tablecloth video</a> we featured a few months back.<br />
<br />
But it's Aprilia that has the greater racing experience, and that's coming to the fore this season in competition. At present, the Italian marque is leading the Superbike manufacturer's championship with its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/apriliarsv4">RSV4</a> while BMW is, ahem... second to last. Check out the video <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/06/22/video-aprilia-rsv4-takes-on-the-tablecloth-fails-but-still/#continued">after the break</a> and see how Aprilia can win while failing.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;"><em><strong><small>BMW S 1000 RR pulls off the old tablecloth trick - Click above to watch the video <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/03/05/video-bmw-s-1000-rr-pulls-off-the-old-tablecloth-trick/#continued">after the break</a></small></strong></em></div>
<br />
Ah yes, the good ol' pull-the-tablecloth-off-the-table-without-sending-dishes-flying routine. The oldest trick in the book? Possibly, but <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/bmw">BMW</a> has taken it upon themselves to update the classic demonstration in a major way. How 'bout upping the ante with 24 complete place settings around a giant rectangular table? Yeah, that'd do it.<br />
<br />
Just how is BMW planning to remove said tablecloth? Using a new <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/bmws1000rr">S 1000 RR</a> superbike, that's how. Will it work? Well, it's really a question of physics, right? Take 193 horsepower and a 0 to 60 time that's just shy of 2.9 seconds. Add in one rider with a quick set of wrists and shake well. Garnish with celebratory wheelie.<br />
<br />
We highly recommend that you <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/03/05/video-bmw-s-1000-rr-pulls-off-the-old-tablecloth-trick/#continued">click past the break</a> to see it all go down on video. It's very much worth your time.<br />

<br />
We are amidst one of the most persistent bouts of winter weather many parts of the world have ever seen. Chalk it up to Punxsutawney Phil predicting six more weeks of this dreaded season, or perhaps just a good old fashion case of cabin fever, but either way, the crew at <a href="http://www.maxbmwmotorsport.com/">Max BMW Motorsport</a> couldn't wait another second to give the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/bmws1000rr">2010 BMW S 1000 RR</a> a good <em><a href="http://www.atwistofthewrist.com/">Twist of the Wrist</a></em>. What? You gonna let a few feet of ice stop you?<br />
<br />
Take your regular old 193-horsepower Beemer, fit a set of Michelin Pilots with cleats and you have the makings of a good snow cone business. After watching the video, we think the new BMW S 1000 RR looks ready for battle - the exhaust note alone will confirm that. Plus, you can choose from four unique color selections, as well as BMW's typical A' la carte menu of safety and performance options.<br />
<br />
Not convinced? The claimed best-in-class power-to-weight ratio may just quicken your pulse. If you find yourself sitting comfortably behind closed doors warming your toes by the fire while you await that first ride of spring, don't fret! Looks like Germany may have actually come up with a cure for the winter blues. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/02/19/face-off-at-center-ice-2010-bmw-s-1000-rr-w-video/#continued">Hit the jump</a> to watch the video.<br />

<br />
It takes a ton of engineering prowess to create any functional internal combustion engine, but especially one that's capable of spinning itself up to 14,200 RPM... without blowing itself to bits in the process, of course. Such high rotational speeds are rarely seen on the street - except in high-performance motorcycle engines such as the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/10/officially-official-bmw-unleashes-all-the-details-on-s-1000-rr/">BMW S 1000 RR</a>'s new 1000cc four cylinder mill.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://autoblog.com/make/bmw">BMW</a>'s most powerful production motorcycle engine cranks out 193 horsepower at 13,000 RPM and 82.5 pound-feet of torque at 9,750 RPM. Reliably. Perhaps the most impressive piece of engineering in such a high-strung engine is the valvetrain, which in this case is comprised of two intake and exhaust valves per cylinder made of lightweight and strong titanium. Each valve is operated by tiny single cam followers with camshafts driven by a very short sprocket driven via an intermediate gear.<br />
<br />
This technology was borrowed from BMW's Formula 1 racing endeavor and is put spectacularly on display in the video that you'll find <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/02/19/video-bmw-s-1000-rr-valvetrain-at-full-bore-shocks-and-awes/#continued">after the break</a>. Trust us, seeing the valves clicking away at 14,200 RPM is not to be missed, and be sure to keep an especially close eye on those springs as they spin on their perches while constantly being pounded into submission from overhead. Amazing.<br />
<br />

<br />"We intend to take the four Japanese head-on. We did not intend to build a motorcycle like Ducati does or KTM does. We wanted to build a mainstream motorcycle." There were a number who doubted Pieter de Waal, Vice President of BMW Motorrad USA, when he <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/19/whats-german-for-bargain-bmw-s-1000-rr-superbike-to-be-price/">uttered that sentiment</a> back in April regarding the company's new S 1000 RR, but it seems the Bavarian motorcycle manufacturer has come through on its promise of attractive pricing for its latest superbike.<br /><br />With a base price of $13,800, the new S 1000 RR is within spitting distance of the Yamaha R1, Suzuki GSX-R1000, Kawasaki ZX-10R and Honda CBR1000RR, which is the most expensive of the Japanese literbikes at $12,999 (plus $1,000 for ABS). As a refresher, the new Beemer - which puts out 193 horsepower at 13,000 RPM, 82.5 lb-ft of torque at 9,750 RPM and weighs 455.3 pounds with a full tank of gas - boasts the best power-to-weight ratio of any bike in its class.<br /><br />Naturally, there are desirable options that can quickly move the bike away from the bargain category, including a package that adds ABS brakes and traction control for $1,480. Click past the break for the complete rundown.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-s-1000-rr">2010 BMW S 1000 RR</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-s-1000-rr/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/bmw_s_1000_rr_13_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-s-1000-rr/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/bmw_s_1000_rr_23_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-s-1000-rr/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/bmw_s_1000_rr_24_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-s-1000-rr/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/bmw_s_1000_rr_26_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-s-1000-rr/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/bmw_s_1000_rr_29_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: BMW]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/17/bmw-s-1000-rr-now-available-for-pre-order-at-13-800/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>BMW S 1000 RR now available for pre-order at $13,800</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/17/bmw-s-1000-rr-now-available-for-pre-order-at-13-800/">BMW S 1000 RR now available for pre-order at $13,800</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 17 Jul 2009 09:27:00 EST. <br />BMW has finally pulled the wraps off its new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/bmws1000rr">S 1000 RR superbike</a>, and let's just say we're anything but disappointed. First, the most important bits: 193 horsepower at 13,000 RPM, 82.5 lb-ft of torque at 9,750 RPM, 455.3 pounds with a full tank of gas. For those keeping track - which is probably just about anyone interested enough to read this post - those statistics are enough to give the big Beemer the most horsepower and best power-to-weight ratio of all literbikes intended for public consumption.<br /><br />Technophiles and anyone else wanting to post the best lap times possible will also be pleased to know that the S 1000 RR will be available with factory ABS and an extremely advanced traction control system. There's also an HP Gearshift Assistant that will allow for full-power clutchless upshifts.<br /><br />Surely the most controversial element of the bike's otherwise conventional styling will be the asymmetrical headlights, which are the only immediately noticeable link to the rest of BMW's motorcycle lineup. Expect U.S. sales to begin early in 2010 for what's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/19/whats-german-for-bargain-bmw-s-1000-rr-superbike-to-be-price/">expected to be a rather attractive price</a>. Want to know more? Click past the break to see a video of the bike in action and BMW's official press release.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-s-1000-rr">2010 BMW S 1000 RR</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-s-1000-rr/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/bmw_s_1000_rr_13_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-s-1000-rr/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/bmw_s_1000_rr_23_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-s-1000-rr/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/bmw_s_1000_rr_24_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-s-1000-rr/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/bmw_s_1000_rr_26_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-s-1000-rr/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/bmw_s_1000_rr_29_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br />[Source: BMW Motorrad]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/10/officially-official-bmw-unleashes-all-the-details-on-s-1000-rr/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Officially Official: BMW unleashes all the details on S 1000 RR superbike (w/VIDEO)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/10/officially-official-bmw-unleashes-all-the-details-on-s-1000-rr/">Officially Official: BMW unleashes all the details on S 1000 RR superbike (w/VIDEO)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sun, 10 May 2009 10:01:00 EST. <br />The street-going version of BMW's upcoming <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/11/bmw-reveals-race-ready-s-1000-rr/">S 1000 RR</a> is scheduled to debut at the World Superbike race on May 29th at Miller Motorsports Park. That's exciting news in and of itself, but we're especially intrigued after hearing that the German manufacturer plans to price the premium machine within spitting distance of its Japanese rivals.<br /><br />"We intend to take the four Japanese head-on. We did not intend to build a motorcycle like Ducati does or KTM does. We wanted to build a mainstream motorcycle," says Pieter de Waal, Vice President of BMW Motorrad USA. That would put the price of the BMW well under that of other European superbikes like the Ducati 1198 or KTM RC8.<br /><br />The figure we've been hearing is that the S 1000 RR will be priced within 10% of the Japanese liter bikes, which would put the German machine at around $15,000, but we're not likely to know for certain for at least the next few weeks. Still, consider our interest piqued.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr-streetbike">BMW S 1000 RR streetbike</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr-streetbike/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/2009-bmw-s1000rr_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr-streetbike/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/2009-bmw-s1000rr-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr-streetbike/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/2009-bmw-s1000rr-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr-race-livery">BMW S 1000 RR race livery</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr-race-livery/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/bmw_s_1000_rr_large_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr-race-livery/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/bmw_s_1000_rr_large_3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr-race-livery/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/bmw_s_1000_rr_large_5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr-race-livery/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/bmw_s_1000_rr_large_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr-race-livery/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/bmw_s_1000_rr_large_4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.dealernews.com/dealernews/Breaking+News/BMW-Relying-on-US-for-Future-Growth/ArticleStandard/Article/detail/593391?contextCategoryId=2704">Dealernews</a> via <a href="http://www.asphaltandrubber.com/news/bmw-s1000rr-priced-japanese-superbikes-cheaper-ducati-ktm/">Asphalt and Rubber</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/19/whats-german-for-bargain-bmw-s-1000-rr-superbike-to-be-price/">What's German for "bargain?" <br />BMW took the wraps off its upcoming S 1000 RR World Superbike contender as the Motorrad division showed the new bike in its official race colors at the Intermot show in Cologne, Germany. Taking a good look at the photos, we can see that the bike is indeed very compact. Look through the numerous cutouts and vents in the fairing and you'll see how neat and tidy the new literbike is. Next year, new BMW factory riders Ruben Xaus and past Superbike champion Troy Corser will ride the 190-horsepower S 1000 RR in competition against the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/06/honda-announces-new-cbr600rr-and-cbr100rr-fireblade-for-u-k/">Big</a> <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/29/suzuki-unveils-2009-gsx-r1000/">Four</a> <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/28/kawasaki-updates-entire-motorcycle-line-for-09/">Japanese</a> <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/08/yamaha-introduces-2009-r1-with-big-bang-firing-order/">superbikes</a>, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/29/ducati-1098-r-180-horsepower-364-pounds-traction-control/">Ducati 1098 R</a> and the new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/22/officially-official-aprilia-rsv4-superbike/">RSV4 from Aprilia</a>. It should all be very exciting to watch.<br /><br />Expect a street-going version shortly, with 1,000 units of the new model due for 2009. Unlike past Beamers, the S 1000 RR uses an inline four-cylinder engine mounted transversely in the frame with a standard chain drive. Suspension bits also follow the normal telescopic formula up front with a traditional coil-over out back, eschewing BMW's past Telelever, Duolever and Paralever designs. BMW has officially pulled the covers off of its S 1000 RR race bike, which will sprout a production model next year. General Director of BMW Motorrad Hendrik von Kuenheim says that the company is committed to building 1,000 units of the new model next year. Featuring a 1000cc inline-four transversely mounted between the frame rails and an upside-down front fork, the RR is rather conventional by BMW standards. This has allowed the Motorrad to keep the bike as compact as possible, which can be attested to by the fact that it has been spotted lapping tracks in Yamaha R6 bodywork. So far, no specifications have been given regarding power levels, but we fully expect it to be competitive with the Superbike front-runners. Traction control is also reportedly put to good use. Judging from the extensive use of (bare) carbon fiber, we'd expect the weight to be on par with the competition, as well. There's an entire speech pasted after the break, so be sure to check it out.<br /><br />BMW plans to crack the top ten next year in World Superbike racing and is expecting podium finishes the following year. Considering the fact that the Big Four Japanese manufacturers literally have a head start measuring a few decades on BMW, it's probably wise to set attainable goals for now. Though we're looking forward to more details regarding the S 1000 RR superbike, at least we have some <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr/755354/">pretty pictures</a> to gaze at until then.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr">BMW S 1000 RR</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/bmw_1000_rr_large_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/bmw_1000_rr_large_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/bmw_1000_rr_large_3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/bmw_1000_rr_large_4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/bmw_1000_rr_large_5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: BMW]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/17/officially-official-bmw-s-1000-rr-race-bike/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Officially Official: BMW S 1000 RR race bike</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/17/officially-official-bmw-s-1000-rr-race-bike/">Officially Official: BMW S 1000 RR race bike</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 17 Apr 2008 10:14:00 EST.
