AddBMW Teases Electric Vehicle For 2013

BMW's concept for "sustainable" urban driving took a couple of steps closer toward reality earlier this month, when the Bavarian automaker offered up more details for its all-electric Megacity car during a technology conference in Munich. The four-passenger MCV is still in development but sketches released by BMW's chief designer, Adrian van Hooydonk, show a knife-like shape with very short overhangs and a windshield raked nearly to the headlamps. It's reminiscent of the horizontal lines of VW's

AddRendered Speculation: A look at what the BMW "i10" Megacity might look like

Come 2013, we know that BMW will launch a sub-brand called Megacity that will consist of battery electric vehicles aimed at urban use. We have no real idea what the first Megacity car will look like, but someone has taken a crack at trying to figure it out.

AddBMW has high-volume plans for carbon fiber that go beyond Megacity

Carbon fiber has been a big success in the automotive aftermarket for years now. From interior trim pieces to strut bars on down to spoilers, the material is extremely popular and for many reasons. First, it's lightweight yet very strong. Second, it just plain looks good. And finally, it begs for attention from other car enthusiasts. While the aftermarket has been hot for this stuff for some time now, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have not exactly warmed up to widespread use of the spa

AddBMW confirms Megacity electric car for 2013

BMW has used the Beijing Motor Show to announce that it will have its much-talked-about Megacity electric car on the market by 2013. Previously, the German automaker had only hinted that it would produce the urban runabout in the first half of the decade. Also of note is that the Megacity EV will be launched under a new sub-brand, much in the same way that the automaker has used its Mini branch to enter into lower-market segments without taking the chance of tarnishing the well-earned reputation

9BMW, SGL announce new carbon fiber plant in Moses Lake, WA

BMW has just announced that the company will join forces with Seattle-based SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers LLC to build a new manufacturing facility in Moses Lake, Washington. Don't get too excited just yet. The plant won't be cranking out CF bits for your 3 Series so that you can have a roof that looks like the one on your neighbor's M3 (shown above). Instead, BMW says the $100 million facility will be creating carbon-fiber reinforced plastics for the upcoming Megacity vehicle. At the same time,

AddReport: BMW evaluating sites for North American carbon fiber plant

A report from Washington State television station KXLY claims that BMW is looking to build another manufacturing facility in North America, but it doesn't appear to be a vehicle assembly plant. The TV station claims BMW and partner SGL Group will announce plans to build a carbon fiber plant in Moses Lake, WA within the next few days or weeks. The site would reportedly bring 200 jobs and $200 million to the region; very good news in an economic downturn. BMW officials had reportedly touched down

11Add Lightness: BMW signs joint venture to further carbon fiber research

Now that steel and aluminum are vying for top billing as the metal of choice in Automobile Land, carbon fiber is often considered the next logical step towards reducing the prodigious weight of today's cars and trucks – especially for high performance and eco-friendly vehicles. The problem, though, is that the material is still prohibitively expensive and difficult to work with for mass production.
