If you love the idea of the 5 Series Gran Turismo but don't want a vehicle quite that large, BMW's got something baking in the oven that you may very well be interested in: a 3 Series Gran Turismo. Just like its larger sibling, this wagon that's masquerading as anything other than a wagon will sport a fastback-like rear roof design that covers up a larger cargo hold than the standard 3's trunk.
BMW's new 5-series Gran Turismo is just now going on sale in Europe and will be coming to U.S. dealers in the next few weeks. However, the Munich brand is already looking at expanding the powertrain lineup. Here in the U.S., we will get the 535 and 550 GT with turbocharged six- and eight-cylinder gas engines. The current EU lineup adds BMW's marvelous 3.0-liter diesel six.
BMW will be showing the production version of the 5-series Gran Turismo next week in Frankfurt and we'll have driving impressions coming in the next few weeks on Autoblog. The folks at AutoCar in the UK however, have already had an opportunity at the wheel of a GT that we won't be getting when the car goes on sale here later this year. The 530d Gran Turismo is powered by 241 hp variant of BMW's 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder diesel similar to the engine available here in the 335d and X5 35d.
BMW Blog is citing an unnamed company insider that reportedly has intimate knowledge of the next-gen 5 Series as saying the new 2011 model will be offered with two separate hybrid powertrain packages. Both the mild system used in the upcoming 7 Series and the more advanced 2-Mode drivetrain that's set to debut in the X6 ActiveHybrid – which was co-developed with General Motors, Chrysler and Daimler – will supposedly be on the menu.
