We weren't aware of any plans for BMW to start up The Hire series again. Perhaps the owner of what looks to be a 3 Series in the following clip knows something we don't, and is looking to audition for the role of The Driver.

In any event, the wheelman attempts to squeeze between two cars on the highway, but quickly learns that lane-splitting is best left to those on two wheels. Any passing room that existed quickly disappears, but clearly, that's not enough to stop the driver. Click past the jump to watch the chaos unfurl.
Continue reading BMW driver's squeeze play fails to go as planned

BMW driver's squeeze play fails to go as planned originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Jul 2011 15:01:00 EST.
Are you currently suffering from BMW M5 withdrawal? Autoblog is here to help, and we'd like to offer up a video that will allow you to cope while you wait for the production version of the newest M5 to be revealed. BMW is still testing and fine-tuning the F10 M5, but the German automaker has been kind enough to bring a camera along to capture the more exciting bits.

Test drivers examine how the M5 responds to wet weather, steep inclines and smoky launches. Here's a spoiler for you; it handles all of that quite well. But you don't have to take our word for it. Click past the jump to see for yourself.
Continue reading BMW M5 gets sideways and leaves long trails of rubber

BMW M5 gets sideways and leaves long trails of rubber originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 May 2011 14:58:00 EST.
Unless you're a tween vampire or the cyborg known as Joan Rivers, you are going to age. BMW understands that as people get older they may not be able to put in the same level of work they once could. It's not just BMW employees that are fighting father time, but the entire work force is inching toward the age of AARP eligibility. In Germany, more than a fifth of the country will be over 65 by the year 2020.

BMW has found its older workforce has a greater level of patience and overall skill, compared to the young Teutonic bucks running around the assembly line. The increased patience runs against a decline in strength, vision and flexibility. That is not a good combination for people required to perform precision tasks. Rather than simply ignoring the needs of their older workers, BMW has found a way to work with them.

Managers at one particular assembly plant switched workers around so that one line was staffed with an older crew. In seven years, the average age for a BMW employee is projected to be 47, inspiring the re-arranged shift.

The result? Productivity went up seven percent, absenteeism fell below the plant average and the defect rate for the line dropped to zero. Sounds amazing, but it was surprisingly easy to accomplish. BMW asked these workers what they needed to be more comfortable on the job, then actually listened to the answers. For example, if a worker mentioned that their feet hurt, BMW supplied them with special shoes and installed wooden floors. If another worker needed a place to sit, they installed a modified hairdresser's chair <strike>out of a Z4</strike> so the employee was comfortable but still able to perform. In total, BMW says they made 70 small changes and the whole project only cost them $50,000.

A new website called DontBlogAboutThis.com has surfaced, currently populated with two photos and two videos. The photos show an odd looking BMW 6 Series wearing skinny tires, a matte paint job and a don't-look-at-me-no-please-look-at-me bumper sticker. Is it the new BMW Hipster Series? The site also notes that these photos are not spy shots - which we know is true since we looked up the domain registration information. The site is owned by BMW.

The two videos, which you can watch after the jump, reveal only a little more than the photos. Whatever is under the hood of this BMW is running very quietly. In fact, it seems to be mostly road noise that we hear before the slightly creepy Heroes-esque music comes in.

What does it all mean? Honestly... we have no clue. We know that the BMW M6 has ceased production so maybe the engineers are deciding to head in a different direction. Could this be powered by hydrogen, Bangle Blood or is an electric boogaloo 6 Series is on the horizon?
Continue reading Video: BMW registers dontblogaboutthis.com, we can't help it

Video: BMW registers dontblogaboutthis.com, we can't help it originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 07 Sep 2010 19:58:00 EST. Hotshoe Nick Heidfeld recently treated a crowd of laborer's at BMW's Munich factory to the spectacle of a big-dollar race car being treated like a hand-me-down Reliant, complete with a body-damaging finale. The shriek of a high-strung F1 racer while it slides around doing lurid donuts is a thing to behold, but the smile quickly fades when the front splitter gets tangled up in the curbing and ripped off the nose.
