Automakers are always looking to push the boundaries with experimental technology, but BMW seems to be ahead of the curve with respect to autonomous vehicles. Previously, BMW was sticking to closed circuits to show off its TrackTrainer. Now, however, the German automaker is venturing out on to public roads, and it's doing so with an automated 5 Series fitted with advanced ConnectedDrive technology.

The system is enabled with a push of a button, once a driver has reached a highway. After it's allowed to work its technical sorcery, the ConnectedDrive system takes over acceleration and braking duty. If the system detects a slower moving vehicle in front, and no vehicles to the side, it's capable of passing said traffic.

BMW is hard at work teaching its prototype how to deal with more traffic situations, such as construction sites and intersections. As the system continues to learn, it will only get better at making sure you're non longer needed. Click past the jump to learn more about this autonomous BMW prototype, and be sure to get a closer look by clicking through the gallery.
Continue reading BMW begins testing autonomous car tech on highways

BMW begins testing autonomous car tech on highways originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 30 Aug 2011 17:31:00 EST. What's the best way for BMW to highlight its ConnectedDrive system? Thievery, of course.

BMW's latest online spot features the ConnectedDrive Vision roadster from this year's Geneva Motor Show and details how the system's connected functionality can help out in your next jewelry heist.
Owners hooked up with BMW ConnectedDrive now have the ability to access real-time traffic information from any internet connected device through the system's recently launched web portal.

The traffic information - provided by connected taxis and fleet vehicles - is much more accurate than traditional methods, and the new implementation will allow drivers to check traffic conditions before they get behind the wheel. The BMW Routes Portal is available now and will be ported into the My BMW Remote app when it launches this fall.
Good news, Apple fans. BMW has turned up the level of smart phone integration in its vehicles in a big way. The company will be showing off its new ConnectedDrive system at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The swank tech not only boasts Bluetooth wizardry and a text-to-speech function that will allow drivers to access text messages, memos, emails and the like from their Blackberry, it will also work with Apple iOS4. That means that the system clicks with the latest iPhone.

But wait, there's more.

The German manufacturer is also introducing something it calls iPod Out that's designed to make the most of using Apple music players in the vehicle. There's even a handy docking system for the iPad in the back seats. What's more, BMW will offer a mobile hotspot system with ConnectedDrive so that passengers can surf the web without burning up their data plans. Welcome to the brave new world. Thanks for the tip, Chris!

BMW ConnectedDrive has been upgraded, turning the automaker's vehicles into the world's best four-wheeled email client. Beginning this autumn, iDrive will be able to connect to BlackBerry phones via Bluetooth and iDrive will be able to display email on its LCD screen. A voice output function is an optional add-on, giving your Bimmer the ability to reads your messages to you. The email functionality bolsters the office functions already included in BMW ConnectedDrive that allows compatible smartphones to pass calendars, text messages and even music player functions to the iDrive system in BMW vehicles.

The first BlackBerry phone that supports ConnectedDrive email is the Pearl 3G, though more will become compatible soon. The key to it all is Bluetooth, which expands the communication and entertainment capabilities of the iDrive system while also enhancing safety by reducing distraction. All BMWs equipped with the Professional navigation option can add the email function once it officially hits showrooms this fall.
