Audi has unveiled Black Edition versions of the A6 and A7 in the UK. Each model will roll from the factory with a set of rotor-design wheels and feature a lower sports suspension borrowed from the company's S Line kit. Designers swapped out the standard grille, license plate surrounds and window trim for blacked-out pieces, and the cabins wear piano black accents. Black Edition models also offer up sport seats swaddled in Valcona leather. The packages will be available on A6 sedan and Avant models, as well as the A7 sportback.

The Black Edition packages are based on the Audi S Line specification, which means tricks like navigation, audi drive select suspension, parking assist and LED tail lamps are all part of the party. Buyers in the UK can expect to see their vehicles be available for order this month, but will have to wait until early 2013 to take delivery. Prices start at 35,010 pounds for the A6 Sedan Black Edition and rack all the way up to 50,575 pounds for the A7 Sportback Black Edition.

We've reached out to Audi to see if North American buyers will get a shot at the new trim lines, and will update this post as soon as we hear word back. In the interim, you can check out the full press release below.

*UPDATE: Mark Dahncke, product and motorsports communications manager with Audi of America, has confirmed the A6 and A7 Black Edition models will not be sold in the US. The Black Editions will only be available in the UK.
Continue reading Audi launches Black Edition models in UK *UPDATE

Audi launches Black Edition models in UK *UPDATE originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 06 Nov 2012 18:32:00 EST.
I always figured that the first six-figure Nissan I drove would have an Infiniti badge on the front, but this $107,600 as-tested 2013 GT-R Black Edition has given lie to that notion.

Since July, I've been fortunate enough to be in some wickedly quick cars, including an SLS AMG Coupe and Roadster, Camaro ZL1, Corvette 427 Convertible, TT RS, Panamera GTS, 911 Carrera S, E63 AMG Wagon and Shelby GT500. I think that under real-world road conditions, though, this Black Edition has got to be the quickest one of them - and not by a little.

Driving Notes

Given that the GT-R has always been galactically rapid, it's a bit hard to suss out the difference between this car and past model years in street use, but kudos to Nissan for aggressively updating the GT-R on a nearly annual basis. This Black Edition (curiously painted Solid Red) extracts 545 horsepower and 463 pound-feet of torque from its 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6. For comparison's sake, the GT-R launched here in 2008 with a piffling 480 horsepower.

What does the Black Edition add? Well, aside from nearly $10,000 to the MSRP, you get a handmade dry carbon fiber wing and lightweight six-spoke Rays alloys (nice forged pieces with black finish and polished lip), along with a pair of Recaro seats and red leather trim on the shifter, seats and door panels. That's a whole lot of cash, but at least the new wheels save a hefty 2.2 pounds per corner.

While the GT-R is a Nissan, it's clearly a supercar in its genetic makeup, so it should come as no surprise that it's not just happy to fire up and immediately run off to the corner grocery in cold weather like a Sentra. You'll want to warm it up a bit more deliberately than you might with an ordinary car. Doing so helps avoid a recalcitrant gearbox when moving between Reverse and Drive modes and avoids low-speed throttle hiccups.

A gripe: Why does Nissan insist on keeping the GT-R's obnoxious reverse warning beep? Unlike other models, the GT-R issues a warning chime in reverse, but it's only heard inside the cabin - it's like your own private garbage truck simulator. A cursory search around the web among GT-R forums would seem there's no easy fix to this bizarre inclusion.

Despite nicer materials in the Black Edition's cabin, like lesser all-wheel-drive heroes from Subaru and Mitsubishi, it's immediately clear that any stray dollars on this vehicle's program went into go-faster bits, not into the interior. The GT-R still feels cheap inside, from some of the switchgear to the gearshift lever itself.

The GT-R has been derided as an unemotional car by some enthusiasts - we've heard that driving it is "too easy" or that it's so accomplished that it's boring to go fast in this car. Rubbish. While it isn't as tactile as, say, a 911, the GT-R still demands quite a bit from its driver, if only because the outside world insists upon hurtling itself at the GT-R's windshield so quickly. And regardless of suspension mode, the ride is just plain rough, making even a daily commute rather more vivid.

Enthusiasts looking to purchase a Nissan GT-R will need to dig deeper. Nissan has announced pricing for the 2013 model, which starts at $96,820, nearly $7,000 more than the 2012 car.

You may remember that the 2008 GT-R started under $70,000, so the sticker shock of a 38.6 percent price increase in six model years is not insignificant. That said, Nissan can counter that no supercar within $100,000 can touch the GT-R when it comes to performance bang for the buck.

Like we told you back in November, the 3.8-liter, twin-turbo V6 cranks out 545 horsepower and 463 pound-feet of torque for 2013, an increase of 15 hp and 15 lb-ft. The zero to 60 sprint takes a jaw-dropping 2.7 seconds, according to the automaker.

The GT-R Black Edition also returns with a starting MSRP of $106,320. It's mainly unchanged for 2013 save for a new dry carbon fiber rear spoiler. Hit the jump to read over the Nissan press release.
Continue reading Nissan raises GT-R base price to $96,820 for 2013

Nissan raises GT-R base price to $96,820 for 2013 originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 21 Jan 2012 12:26:00 EST.
You'd expect a car labeled Black Edition to actually be, you know...black. Whether it's a Porsche, a Hummer or a Unimog. But then again Mercedes-AMG's top line of performance models are called the Black Series, and you can get those in any color you want. So maybe it's a page out of that playbook that Mazda has taken with its latest special edition.

Mazda's latest specials are available exclusively in the UK, and celebrate the success of the MX-5 GT race car. It's available on both the MX-5 Miata hardtop roadster and the Mazda2 five-door hatch, and while either can be ordered in green, red or white, it's the black trim on everything from the roof to the wheels that sets them apart and gives them their name.

Only 500 examples of the MX-5 Sport Black shown above will be offered, while the Mazda2 Black will give birth to 618 offspring, each packing all the bells and whistles to go along with the darkened trim. Details in the press release after the jump, with images in the high-res gallery.
Continue reading Mazda UK's Black edition MX-5 and Mazda2 can be had in any color... as long as it's not black?

Mazda UK's Black edition MX-5 and Mazda2 can be had in any color... as long as it's not black? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 26 Jul 2011 18:01:00 EST.
Porsche has just unveiled the newest addition to its stable: the 2012 Porsche Cayman S Black Edition. Along with that sinister paint scheme, the vehicle packs an extra 10 horsepower over the standard Cayman S and rolls on unique 19-inch Boxster Spyder wheels. That bumps the final pony figure up to 330 hp, which helps the vehicle scoot to 60 miles per hour in a scan 4.6 seconds.

Outside, all of the vehicle's chrome accents have been painted black for the ultimate stealth look, and that theme carries on indoors. Black is the only available interior color, though brushed stainless steel and aluminum accents are littered throughout the cabin for a little flair. Even the gauges have been doused dark, and a Sport Design steering wheel is part of the package, too.

The Cayman S Black Edition toes the same line as the Boxster S and 911 Black Editions by offering the Porsche Convenience package as standard equipment. The 500 buyers lucky enough to sink their teeth into this model will be treated to adaptive bi-xenon headlights and rain-sensing wipers, among other kit, and navigation is standard, as well.

If you like what you see, Porsche will kindly ask for $67,500 for the pleasure of ownership. Hit the jump for the full press blast.
Continue reading 2012 Porsche Cayman S Black Edition joins the dark side

2012 Porsche Cayman S Black Edition joins the dark side originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 May 2011 12:59:00 EST.
As part of Porsche's spread here at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, the German automaker is showing both of its new Black Edition cars - murdered-out versions of both the 911 and Boxster. But Porsche has done more than simply paint the cars black. Both models get a host of new standard equipment, and in the case of the Boxster, a slight power upgrade over its standard S variant.

The 911's 3.6-liter flat-six continues to put down 345 horsepower, but the Boxster gets a mind-blowing 10-hp bump over the standard 310-hp 3.4-liter powerplant. Both cars can be had with either manual or PDK dual-clutch transmissions, and fuel economy (19/26 for the Boxster and 19/27 for the 911) is surprisingly good for cars that are presumably this good to drive.

The Boxster S Black Edition will set you back $65,200, while the 911 commands $81,300, or $91,300 if you want the wind-in-your-hair Cabriolet experience. See both cars for yourself in the high-res galleries of live shots below.
Of course not. So while everyone else is going for blinged-out shiny this and sparkling that, Porsche Design has re-released its cutting-edge P'9522 mobile phone all in black.

The feature set is the same as the existing, award-winning P'9522 released last year, which means it's made of solid aluminum and packs fingerprint authentication, WiFi and GPS, to short-list just a few of its features. But instead of the shiny stuff, the special edition - mimicking the original Porsche Design Chronograph I and the instruments on competition-spec 911s - is decked out in the matte stuff, all without the need for a vinyl wrap and giving RIM a run for its nomenclature money.

Check it out in the high-resolution image gallery below and the press release after the jump.
While the Gelandewagen is no joke in its own right, Daimler's own ultimate terra bully would roll right over it. Unimogs have been around for about fifty years, and were originally designed as go-anywhere, do-anything work trucks. The U500 Black Edition Unimog is still akin to a vehicular Chuck Norris, but luxed-up to the point that you'd hate to mar the blingy pedals with muddy boots.

England's BigLorryBlog had a chance to bruise the earth with one of these, and found it an object of workmen's desire. The U500 they sampled was not outfitted with any hard labor devices, so the ride was a bit bouncy, but nobody was complaining from the leather clad driver's perch with its own suspension. At €250,000, it's not cheap, but the good stuff never is. Here's what you say when someone questions your buying decision: "Buy the best, cry once. Now get outta my way before I make your Paseo scrap."

Thanks for the tip, Dan!

[Source: BigLorryBlog]
G500 not enough? Ford of Europe planning K.I.T.T.-inspired Focus ST Black Edition

Click the image above for more high-res shots.

Ford's finally done it. In an effort to quell our burning lust for the Euro-Focus here at home, they seem to have neglected to issue an English press release for its newest special edition hot hatch. While the indecipherable French-translated text our colleagues over at the Jalop procured is bad enough, equally confusing is the marketing scheme behind the Focus ST Black Edition. Supposedly, the Hoff's epic '80s serial Knight Rider was the inspiration for the design of this L.E. model, and although some of us around Autoblog HQ were products of the Reagan decade, we're pretty sure that K.I.T.T. was never based on a Blue Oval offering. But we digress.

The real news is that the Black Edition ST gets an appropriately sinister paint job, matched with orange graphics and trim, along with 19-inch OZ Superturismo WP wheels wrapped in Dunlop SP Sportmaxx rubber, sized 225/35Z R19. On the inside, the standard ST Recaros remain, albeit with matching orange trim, while piano black inserts and a new sport steering wheel make the package a cohesive whole.

Power is still provided by the 2.5-liter turbo'd five-pot found in the standard ST, pushing out 223 HP and 236 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,600 and 4,000 RPM. Only 50 Black Editions will be made available, and if you're brave enough to follow the jump, you can read the entire translated press release. A "Knight to wrinkle" it is.

[Source: Ford, Jalopnik]

Gallery: Ford Focus ST Black Edition
