Ferrari 599XX - click above for hi-res image gallery

Few words have greater impact when mashed together than "Ferrari" and "GTO." While there are rivals at times, the most expensive car in the word for the last three decades has been the original, Daytona Coupe battling, Le Mans winning Ferrari 250 GTO. Designed by Giotto Bizzarrini and raced into history by Phil Hill, few cars wear the moniker "legendary" quite as well. After all, only 39 were ever made.

But, like Leah, there is another. The mighty Ferrari 288 GTO. Developed -- like Porsche's 959 and 961 -- for Group B action, few if any cars set our hearts so totally on fire. Know nothings might scoff at the 2.85-liter displacement, but those of us in the know will point to the two turbochargers, two intercoolers and 400 stampeding horses. We might even tell them that if they turned the boost pressure up from 11.6 psi to something a bit higher, 600 hp is well within reach. However, the 288 GTO isn't, as just 272 examples (though some say 273) were made. Compare that to the 1,315 Ferrari F40s that were built. A car we should point out, that's basically a 288 GTO with a body kit.

Now there might be three. EVO is reporting that Ferrari is about to let loose a new GTO upon the world in the form of a 700 horsepower monster called the 599 GTO. Obviously, it's an evolution of the street 599, and in fact EVO's claiming it's the racetrack only 599XX for the street. During a recent interview, Ferrari CEO Amedeo Felisa told the Brit mag that when the 458 Italia debuted, the 599 was internally reassigned to the "Sports Car" division, instead of where it used to reside, as a "GT."

More interestingly, should it come to fruition, the 599 GTO will have specs to make Enzo owners smack their own foreheads. 700 hp will come from the raising the 6.0-liter V12's redline to a stunning 9,000 rpm. A faster transmission should shave gear change times down from 100 milliseconds to an essentially F1 quick 60 milliseconds. And it will be light. Everything should add up to a 3.2 second dash to 60 mph and an Enzo-matching top speed of 217 mph. Though if the 599 GTO went a little bit faster than that, we wouldn't be all that surprised. Tip of the Ferrari branded $50 Kimi Räikkönen baseball cap (no, really) to Kevin!

It's not much of a shock to find an automotive mash-up on eBay Motors. However, it's rare that one of those Frankencars is a combination of one vintage Italian exotic with an even rarer and more exotic body on top, all assembled by the genius responsible for much of the hardware in the first place.

Initially intended to be a Bizzarrini GT America, this striking red coupe has been assembled on top of a Lamborghini 400GT chassis carrying the very V12 Giotto Bizzarrini designed for the marque of the bull before striking out on his own. It's more than the melding of one man's portfolio of work, the seller says it's a true Bizzarini because the car was actually finished in Livorno, Italy by Giancarlo Reali, former coachwork chief for the Bizzarrini operation.

While the car is in need of some elbow grease to render it fully stunning, that doesn't make it a bargain at a $250,000 starting bid. Given that this car seems to have actual pedigree that's sorely lacking from most of the stock offered on eBay, that price may not be as outlandish as it first seems for a one-off put together from 40-year-old leftover parts.

Gallery: Bizzarrini-Lamborghini

[Source: eBay]
eBay Find of the Day: Lamborghini-Bizzarrini Targa one-off originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 24 Jun 2009 10:05:00 EST.
Back in May we brought you the news that Bizzarrini would be reviving the P538 name with a brand new supercar, and while we only had renderings at the time, we can now show you a few photos of the ongoing construction of the car. Based on the full monocoque chassis of the Arbitrage GT, the P538 will utilize carbon fiber bodywork and a Chevrolet LS7 V8 offered in naturally aspirated and turbocharged form courtesy of Lingenfelter Performance Engineering. The company plans to have no less then four cars completed by the end of the year, at least one of which is slated to undergo testing at Nardo in November.

Any day with a new Italian supercar is a good day. Today, then, is such a day, brought to you by one of the most stoic names inside or outside the business. Those in the know will recognize the name as belonging to Giotto Bizzarrini, the sportscar guru whose career brought him to the likes of Ferrari, Lamborghini, Alfa Romeo and Iso. Among his most famous creations were the iconic Ferrari 250 GTO and the enduring Lamborghini V12 whose latest evolution can still be found in the Murcielago and Reventon. In the 1960's Bizzarrini went independent and built, among others, the original P538S. Although it didn't do very well at Le Mans - spinning at the start of the 1966 running and failing to start in '67 - the P538S gathered a following as one of Bizzarrini's greatest designs.

What you see above is a modern interpretation of that legendary vehicle. The new Scuderia Bizzarrini P538 borrows its chassis from the Galmer Arbitrage GT, the wicked-looking Thai supercar we brought you nearly two years ago. Like the Arbitrage, and following the spirit of the original Corvette-powered P538S, the new Bizzarrini prototype is powered by a mid-mounted Chevrolet LS7 V8. Bodywork is suitably stunning, looking something like a cross between a Lotus, a Koenigsegg and a Porsche Carrera GT, but with its own unique flavor. Although it does not seem that Giotto Bizzarrini was involved in the project himself, he is said to have given his approval.

This isn't the first effort to revive the Bizzarrini name since the company folded in 1969, but if it actually rolls into even limited production after its official unveiling (scheduled for this month at Italy's famed Nardo high-speed test track) this month, it may succeed where other efforts - including the 1998 Kjara hybrid sportscar and the GT Strada 4.1 concept shown at Geneva '05 - previously failed.

(An example of Kasumba's evolution of mask themes into automotive designs is shown in this portfolio).

Kasumba is the founder and president of the African Automotive Design Association. The Italian engineering group is led by Leone Martellucci.

Gioto Bizzarrini was one of Italy's leading automotive engineers and designers in the '50s and '60s, whose creations include the Ferrari 250 GTO, Lamborghini 350 GTV, Iso Rivolta and Iso Grifo A3 (a racing version of which won Le Mans in 1964). The A3 design moved with Bizzarini when he launched his own company, where it became the Bizzarrini 5300 GT Strada, and the 5300 GT Corsa (a racing version). The '5300' designation reflects the 5.3-liter Chevy smallblock that sat beneath the long hood.

[Source: Car Body Design]

African design and Italian engineering create "New Strada" supercar originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 16 Aug 2006 09:01:00 EST.
