When we think of the term "hybrid," at least in its vehicular sense, we tend to conjure up images of cars like the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight. These machines are so named due to their dual powertrains, most generally consisting of an internal combustion engine and an electric motor and battery.

Really, though, a hybrid could be any vehicle that gets its motive force through multiple sources... no matter what those sources may be. Hence, Lexus' newest hybrid concept proudly carries its moniker despite the complete lack of an engine. It does, however, have a 240-Watt electric motor powered by a 25.9-volt lithium battery pack, along with... pedals?

That's right. Though it managed to escape our attention up to this point, Lexus actually displayed a duo of hybrid electric bicycles at last year's Tokyo Motor Show, and the Japanese automaker is now touting the bike as part of its sponsorship of the Great British Bike Ride.

According to Lexus, the frame is constructed of carbon fiber (the same composite that makes up Valentino Rossi's MotoGP bike, gushes Lexus) and uses an eight-speed internal gear system sourced from Shimano, in reference to the LS 600h's eight-speed automatic. There are no plans to put the bike into production. Want to know more? Check out the high-res image gallery below and see the press release after the jump.

Ever wonder what F1 engineers could make if they didn't have to comply with the regulations governing the sport? Well, here you just might have your answer. Only it's not a car, it's a bicycle.

The product of British engineering firm BERU F1 Systems, the Factor 001 very well might be the pinnacle of road bikes. Without having to comply to the regulations of any particular cycling series, BERU was able to start from scratch and design the bike the way they best saw fit. The carbon fiber monocoque frame is painstakingly built according to the customer's specifications and measurements and features carbon-ceramic brakes and an LCD touch-screen that displays biometrics and various other readings.

BERU will only produce a few hundred examples of the Factor 001, which may come down more to the time factor: each example takes six engineers a week to build. Currently on display at London's Science Museum and at Harrod's department store, prices - are you ready for this? - start at a whopping £22,000. That's about $34 grand in American greenbacks, in case you weren't cringing enough already. Details in the press release after the jump.
Now the gang from Stuttgart is offering another option for you (assuming you still consider breathing to be green). The 2007 Mercedes Bike Collection features mainstream "Fitness" and "Trekking" models and an über-cycle Racing version with a carbon-fiber frame. All models get disk brakes, and the Trekking version also has an automatic halogen headlight powered by a dynamo mounted in the hub. The aluminum-framed Fitness and Trekking models come in three frame sizes and start at $1,300 and $1,700 respectively. The racing bike starts at $5,200. Presumably, they'll also offer a custom-fit rack to go on the back of your big diesel-powered GL320. The complete Mercedes press release is included after the jump.

[Source: Mercedes-Benz]

Gallery: 2007 Mercedes-Benz pedal power lineup

Continue reading Mercedes-Benz rolls out new line of bicycles

Mercedes-Benz rolls out new line of bicycles originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 28 Feb 2007 18:35:00 EST.
