The best-selling vehicle in all the land last year was, of course, the Ford F-Series pickup. If our math is correct, that makes its string of sales crowns 31-years long. While last year's performance of 645,316 units sold is far from the 900,000+ sold in 2001, 2004 and 2005, it was still enough to best the F-150's main competitor and second-best-selling vehicle of 2012, the Chevrolet Silverado, plus that truck's twin, the GMC Sierra, combined.

This year's list of the top 10 best-selling vehicles in the US doesn't hold a lot of surprises, but there are a few items to note. Look closely and you'll see that the Toyota Camry, long America's best-selling car, nearly overtook the Silverado for the list's second spot. Last year was probably the Camry's best shot, as an all-new Silverado and Sierra will go on sale soon and likely put first runner-up honors out of reach.

There were two vehicles bumped from the list year: the Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Cruze. The Cruze made its first and only appearance on the list in 2011, but strong competition from redesigned competitors like the Honda Civic, which reappears on the list for 2012, kept its sales flat. The Fusion's absence is also likely due to its fiercely competitive segment. Redesigned for 2012 and with more production capacity than ever before, however, could see it on next year's list.

Ford is celebrating its 350 millionth vehicle. That is an impressive number, spanning back 109 years. The lucky 350 millionth vehicle happens to be a 2013 Ford Focus, which, appropriately enough, is the world's best-selling car for the first six months of this year.

The Focus in question has been built at Ford's Rayong, Thailand plant, the automaker's newest production facility. The Blue Oval invested $450 million into opening the complex in May to produce the Focus, a globally sold vehicle.

In acknowledging its milestone, Ford has released some other fun numbers to sift through. With all of its global production facilities, those 350 million vehicles produced average out to 8,797 units a day - 367 vehicles every hour, or one new car every 10 seconds. See, right there? Ford probably built a new car in the time it took you to read that last sentence or two.

Take a look at the press release below to read all about this impressive milestone for the originator in automobile mass production.
Continue reading Ford Focus is company's 350th millionth vehicle and world's best-seller so far this year

Ford Focus is company's 350th millionth vehicle and world's best-seller so far this year originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 31 Aug 2012 18:45:00 EST.
The figures have been tallied for the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. in 2011, and not surprisingly, the Ford F-Series pickup truck is king of the heap once again. Dealers sold a total of 584,917 F-Series units in 2011, beating out the second-place Chevrolet Silverado by 169,787 units. The Toyota Camry filled out the podium with 308,510 sales, which left the top three unaltered from their 2010 rankings. Fourth place went to the surging Nissan Altima, which jumped from its seventh place position last year. Likewise, the Ford Escape enjoyed a jolt in popularity as well. While the aging CUV took the 13th spot last year, the Ford sold 254,293 units to take fifth place in 2011.

That bumped the Honda Accord and its Crosstour variant to sixth place. Interestingly enough, the Honda duo just barely beat out the Ford Fusion by 5,000 units. Were the two Honda models to be split, the Fusion would have easily knocked the Accord further down the list. Likewise, the Toyota Corolla and Matrix teamed up to edge out the Chevrolet Cruze for ninth and tenth places, respectively.
We know... the suspense was killing us, too. We'll spare you the sleepless nights and get right to the list of America's best-selling cars and trucks for 2010:

As you can see, the Ford F-Series was the best-selling nameplate in 2010 for the 34th straight year, followed by the Chevrolet Silverado. The Toyota Camry, which managed to edge out the Silverado for second place in 2009, came in as the third-best-seller in 2010, its numbers down by about 7.5 percent from 2009. Also down were sales of the fifth-place Corolla (by nearly 10 percent).

We're just speculating here, but we'd guess there's one rather obvious reason Team Toyota's sales figures have fallen, and it's spelled R-E-C-A-L-L. Even so, those are still mighty impressive numbers, particularly in light of the amount of bad ink the Japanese automaker has endured this year. Every other vehicle in the top ten was up in sales, with the two Ford models earning gains of over 20 percent each. For reference, click here to see last year's list of best-sellers.
Mouse over the clock in the lower right-hand corner of your PC. Alternatively, if you're a Mac user, look at the little iCal widget down at the bottom of your screen. Whoa, look at that! It's 2010. January 6th, to be exact. And that means the final sales tallies of all automakers for the year-that-was are in. As you may have noticed yesterday, none but Subaru, Kia and Hyundai are likely to be entirely pleased with their YTD performances, falling as they did compared to sales in 2008.

Wouldn't you know, though, that not one of those three upwardly trending automakers earned a single spot on the Top 10 Best Selling Vehicles chart? To see a Korean automobile on the list, you need to expand the search to the Top 17. This fact reminds us yet again that by and large the American population tends to be a rather predictable bunch.

Think you can guess what the best-selling vehicle of 2009 was? We won't lie... you probably can. In fact, it's been the same vehicle for the past 28 years straight. Want to know what it is? Find out, along with the rest of the Top 20, after the jump.
Some believe that it could indeed happen, and it's not even another pickup truck that is threatening the Blue Oval's bread-and-butter full-size pickup, it's the Toyota Camry. Let that sink in for a moment... alright, let's continue. The Camry already posted better sales numbers than the Chevy Silverado, the perennial second-best seller to the F-Series, for the month of April. In fact, the Silverado suffered a sales drop of 24.7 percent to 37,231 units while the Camry grabbed 40,016 sales in the same month. Still, even after the Camry's great sales month, the Silverado holds the edge when the entire year-to-date sales numbers are compiled, and the F Series still sits atop the list for now. Consider too that the Ford truck will get a major redesign for the upcoming model year. So, while high gas prices will likely continue to put pressure on full-size pickups, let's not jump to hasty conclusions just yet.

[Sources: Chevrolet, Ford, Toyota, the Auto Channel]
The end is nigh?
