The Bentley Continental GT with the W12 is rated at 12 city/19 highway on traditional premium, 8 city/14 highway on E85, and easily less than that on an excited right foot. When we drove the Continental GT V8 at launch we were told that official EPA mileage could be rated as high was 24 mpg on the highway, and that, even with the right-foot factor, would be a generous improvement over the W12 for sacrificing just 67 horsepower and almost nothing in performance. It turns out Bentley told the truth, the official EPA numbers are 15 city/24 highway.

According to FuelEconomy.gov, the 12 combined mpg of the W12 is raised to 15 combined with the V8. Better yet, drivers will save $1,000 on premium unleaded every year, the V8 needing $3,400 worth of the explosive liquid, the W12 needing $4,300. On top of the fact that the V8 is roughly $18,000 less than the W12, with those annual savings you'll be able to add a couple more ties to your collection every year, or one bespoke shoe. Start with the right foot - that's where the action is.
Bentley Continental GT V8 hits 24 mpg highway originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 13 May 2012 18:32:00 EST.
All things being equal, we'd generally rather have more cylinders than fewer. But Bentley upset that particular applecart with the latest Continental GT. Not only is the 500-horsepower V8 version less expensive than the 567-hp W12, it also boasts better handling (thanks to less weight in the nose) and better fuel economy, too - all with a scant 67 less horsepower.

So why would anyone want the twelve-cylinder version? That's a good question, and one which Bentley is apparently not afraid to ask itself.

Some customers will likely opt for the W12 for snobbery's sake or because their last Conti had one, but the crew at Crewe aren't about to let that stand at the extent of it. So word has it that the British automaker is gearing up to substantially improve its W12 engine in due course.

So what will those improvements encompass? Hard to say, but sources in the UK suggest a similar process that brought the Audi-sourced V8 up to Bentley specifications. The speculation is also that an eight-speed automatic is in the cards to replace the current six, and that hybrid technology is under consideration, too.

Aside from the fuel economy aspect, however, we ought to be looking at around 600 horsepower from the updated W12 - and that's just in base trim, with the Speed model and maybe even a new Supersport version to pack even more.
Bentley improving W12 to justify over V8 Continental originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 20 Feb 2012 10:02:00 EST.
Back in 2008, Milanese design studio Zagato got together with Bentley to create the Continental GTZ, a coachbuilt version of Crewe's prolific luxury coupe. Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, the design had some beautiful elements, but the GTZ wasn't supposed to be a one-and-done affair. For a handsome fee, Zagato offered to rebody anyone's Continental GT to mirror the show car; no more than nine examples were to be built. Unfortunately, it looks like nobody was willing to shell out the €800,000 asking price (a bit over $1M USD - plus the donor car's MSRP) to have theirs converted.

As a result, it seems that only the one example was made. But - good news, everyone! - that solitary example, in two-tone silver and green - is now in the United States and available for sale. This is said to be the actual show car, based on a Continental GT Speed, that debuted at the Geneva Palexpo two and a half years ago. The one-of-a-kind creation has just 870 miles on the odometer and promises to endure as a unique collectable. However, that uniqueness carries an insane price tag: Bentley San Francisco, the seller, is looking for a $1.1 million starting bid (on a $1.45 million Buy It Now price). No bids have been registered thus far.

When one of Volkswagen's higher-end marques unveils a new version of one of its core products, you know one thing for certain: the debut is just the beginning. Because after the first new version rolls out, there will be a veritable landslide of variants to follow.

That's the case with the Porsche 911, that's the case with the Lamborghini Gallardo and that's certainly the case with the Bentley Continental. The GT coupe was the first to be updated, the Flying Spur sedan is sure to follow in due course, and we can presume to see Speed and even Supersport versions as well. But before they come along, the Crewe has official lifted the veil on the GTC drophead.

The convertible model follows the lead of the updated Continental GT, only with a folding fabric roof. That gives the 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12 and all its 567 horsepower ample opportunity to fill the cabin with its silken rumble and gracefully tousle the hair of its occupants.

We'll be driving the new model within a couple of weeks, but in the meantime, this is our first look, so check it out from the Volkswagen Group pavilion here in Frankfurt in our gallery, or watch some B-roll after the jump.
Continue reading 2012 Bentley Continental GTC wafts onto stage [w/video]

2012 Bentley Continental GTC wafts onto stage [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 16:41:00 EST.
Luxury automakers like Bentley have been enjoying increasing success in the Chinese market. But with every factory owner and their cousin clamoring for a new Continental Flying Spur, some will invariably demand something a little more unique. So to satisfy its most demanding clientele, Bentley has teamed up with high-end furniture craftsmen Linley to create a special edition specifically for China.

Only ten examples of the Linley special edition will be offered in the Asian country, each outfitted with such unique features as Santos rosewood veneers around the cabin with intricate marquetry inlay, a specially crafted humidor in the rear console, branded treadplates, rhodium-coated plaque, contrasting piping on the leather upholstery and a leather bag with cashmere blanket.

We won't ask how many yuan the special edition will sell for, because even if we lived halfway around the world, this would still be far out of reach. The closest we'll get, then, is the press release after the jump and the high-resolution images in our gallery.
Continue reading Bentley teams up with Linley on exclusive Continental Flying Spur for China

Bentley teams up with Linley on exclusive Continental Flying Spur for China originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 06 Sep 2011 14:30:00 EST.
The 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show is just around the corner, where Bentley is set to reveal its brand-spanking-new Continental GT Speed. Our intrepid spy photographers caught this Conti prototype out on the street completely uncovered, meaning there's little left for us to speculate about before the supercoupe's debut.

The Speed model is set apart from its kin by a more aggressive lower fascia and different exhaust outlets, but don't let the subtlety fool you - the real story is what's under the hood. Mum's the word on exactly what we can expect in terms of power, but seeing as how the last Continental GT Speed produced 600 horsepower, you'd be right to expect numbers north of that for the new one.

We'll have the full details come mid-September, if not sooner...
Next Bentley Continental GT Speed caught undisguised originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 17 Aug 2011 19:01:00 EST.
For an automaker with just two model lines, Bentley sure has a lot of room to expand in the coming year or two. With the newly facelifted Continental GT now out on the market, a new Continental GTC drop-top expected to be unveiled in Frankfurt, after which we can expect the next Flying Spur, and then the inevitable Speed variants of each bodystyle.

The Mulsanne is also expected to spawn a new coupe and convertible, and reports of new model lines, including an SUV, have been circulating. But in the middle of all of this expansion, Bentley is preparing to downsize (in a sense).

It's been no secret that Continental range will add a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine option alongside the 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12 currently on offer. And now comes word that the new mill will drop at January's Detroit Auto Show.

No word on output just yet, but you can expect it to undercut the 567 horsepower of the current twelve by some margin. And as Alex Nunez reports at ConsumerSearch, the lighter engine is tipped to provide a sportier drive than the larger mill it joins.
Bentley to debut V8 Continental at Detroit show originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 31 Jul 2011 11:02:00 EST.
Bentley's Continental range has, well... "spurred" a whole line of derivatives: the GT coupe, the GTC convertible, the Flying Spur sedan, Speed and Supersports versions of each, a string of special editions.... And like other such proliferative products - say, the Porsche 911 or Ford Mustang, for examples - when one is updated, it starts a whole new game of dominoes.

So after the Continental GT was updated this past September with a fresh face and a whole host of changes, we knew it would only be a matter of time before the others would follow. And according to reports, the next one down the line is the cabrio.

Word has it that the new Continental GTC will be unveiled one year after the coupe was revealed at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show. So what can we expect when it does? Well, the same fresh bodywork as its fixed-roof counterpart and its refresh interior as well as its revised flex-fuel 6.0-liter twin-turbo W-12 and six-speed automatic transmission, only with a folding fabric roof.

A less costly V8 model is still expected to come at some point down the road, as will the more powerful Speed versions and the Flying Spur sedan. Just one Bentley at a time there, boys.
Bentley to unveil new Continental GTC in Frankfurt originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 08 Jul 2011 17:29:00 EST.
The first generation of Bentley's Continental range spawned as many variants as its engine has cylinders. Over seven years of production, they including the GT coupe, the GTC convertible and the Flying Spur sedan, in three levels of engine output (standard, Speed and Supersports), with countless special editions and factory-sanctioned coachbuilt variants (like Zagato's GTZ and Touring's Flying Star) along the way.

So what's next in the pipeline? Well, now that the second-generation Continental GT has hit the market, we can expect the whole rigamarole to start anew. While the range will expand southwards with a new V8 engine option, rumors have begun to surface over the northward expansion with a new Supersports model.

Tipped to be even more extreme than the stripped-out, pumped-up, flex-fuel first-gen Supersports, the new version based on the new Continental GT could benefit from a more aggressive aero package with spoilers and vents aplenty, and a potentially even more powerful engine. Word has it that production could be capped at 100 units, and that Bentley could be planning a surprise unveiling at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. That said, we'd be a little surprised if Bentley jumped right from the Conti GT to the top whack Supersports - if they follow tradition, other bodystyles and a Speed-series of models will arrive first.

The Baltic Sea, sitting off the coast of Finland, is a white wasteland of ice and snow during the winter portion of the calendar. Local hero Juha Kankkunen, a four-time World Rally Champion, looks out over that vast expanse and sees a blank slate on which he can make his mark. What exactly is that mark? It's 200 miles per hour... on ice.

Kankkunen is no stranger to going fast over less-than-ideal driving conditions. However, his rally cars never hit 200 mph and he wasn't driving them on 70 centimeters worth of ice, four kilometers away from the Finnish coast. This fast Fin had previously taken a shot at the 200-mph mark, back in 2007 using a Bentley Continental GT. He came up just short, but his official speed of 199.83 mph did shatter the previous ice speed record of 184 mph, which was set in 1995 in a Bugatti EB110 Supersport.

This time around, Kankkunen was piloting the Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible, which boasts 621 horsepower under the hood. The only modifications made to the car included a roll-cage, Pirelli winter tires, a rear parachute and some light aero mods to help with stability on the rather slippery surface.

His Bentley gurgling at the start line like a British school boy who just discovered Pop Rocks, Juha Kankkunen pushed the accelerator to the velvety soft carpet of his Supersports ice rocket. One thousand meters later and the world has a new record for driving quickly over ice... 205.48 mph. Onnittelut Juha ja Bentley!

Bentley shooting brake, anyone? Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera can hook you up. The Milanese coachbuilder unveiled the Flying Star at last year's Geneva Motor Show, and stole our hearts in the process. But since the shooting brake debuted and its order books opened, Touring has only made three examples of the custom creation.

No wonder, as the coachbuilder says it takes 4,000 man-hours to transform a Continental GTC (still the outgoing model, we gather) into the long-roofed coupe. But thanks to increased investment in the form of new equipment and staff, Touring can now reportedly be working on up to five vehicles at a time.

Each example still takes six months to deliver, with total production limited to 19 examples. Fortunate buyers can specify from a range of customizations, including the twin-turbo 6.0-liter W12 in states of tune ranging from 552 horsepower (base) to 621 (Supersports).

2012 Bentley Continental Flying Spur Series 51 - Click above for high-res image gallery

The Bentley Continental has become the default choice for the upper crust of car buyers that it's become known as the Toyota Camry of the luxury market. The thing is, not everyone wants to pull up the country/yacht/private club in the same thing everyone else is driving. It'd be a shame, though, if more individualistic customers were deterred from considering the Bentley, because it's one heck of a car. So to offer a little extra touch of individuality, Crewe has rolled out the Series 51.

Already available on the Continental GT coupe and Continental GTC convertible, the Series 51 edition can now be ordered as well on the Continental Flying Spur sedan. The choice trim level gives customers a broader range of color options, including two-tone exteriors, three-tone interiors, special veneer choices, and new nine-spoke, graphite-finish 19-inch alloys unique to the Series 51 (and different from the 14-spoke dubs on the coupe and convertible versions). Crewe's design team has put together 14 special color combinations for the Bentley Continental Flying Spur Series 51 (which also challenges for the title of longest name yet), but buyers can specify an infinite array of combos of their choosing.

Along with the Series 51, Bentley has announced new front-fender air vents for any Flying Spur, as well as blue brake calipers, and the inclusion of a new touchscreen infotainment system on the Spur or the Supersports coupe and convertible - an upgrade that was far overdue. Full details can be found in the press release after the jump, along with the high-resolution images in the gallery below.

This is what happens at SEMA: you're strolling the aisles minding your own business, you turn your head and then a cluster of mighty malicious metal rocks you like a pow! straight out of vintage Batman. Holy Toledo! In this case it was the Savini Wheels booth, loaded up with a sedan and four coupes that should be parked outside the Legion of Doom. A Rolls-Royce Ghost inscribed with the ominous phrase "The Omen Machine" (probably meant for Lex Luthor), sits among a Lamborghini Murcielago with white-carbon-fiber-accented rims, Mercedes SLS AMG, Bentley Continental GT and a Ferrari 458 on a delicious set of spokes.

We couldn't get any more information on the cars or wheels because the hall wasn't open yet... but what more do you need? Beastly cars for bad, bad men are in the high-res gallery below.

Bentley has managed to make a lot out of one model line. From the Continental has emerged coupe, convertible and sedan bodystyles, in standard, Speed and Supersports engine specs, with a smattering of special editions along the way. But that's only the tip of the proverbial iceberg compared to what the Flying B marque has in store for the new model, according to reports from across The Pond.

What Bentley appears to have in its sights for the diversification of the freshly-unveiled new Continental is similar to what we've seen over at Porsche. The Stuttgart-based automaker rolls out different variants of the 911 on a regular basis, to the point that the current-generation model has over a dozen derivatives on the market. The addition of a new V8 model to slot in under the current W12 will have a multiplier effect on the Continental's catalog, but beyond that, Crewe is reportedly planning further special editions.

The aim of the broadening range would be, according to reports, to maintain interest in the Continental and help even out peaks and valleys in the company's sales charts. One way or another, we're looking at a future filled with machine-turned aluminum and quilted leather, and those are two things of which we can never get quite enough.

2011 Bentley Continental GT - Click above for high-res image gallery

The Mulsanne is still fresh. The new Continental GT has just arrived on scene. Bentley will undoubtedly have its hands full creating another couple of variations of each, but it's not about to stop there. According to emerging reports from the British Isles, Crewe is planning a four-door coupe or five-door hatch to take on the likes of the Aston Martin Rapide and Porsche Panamera.

The reports come courtesy of Auto Express, who spoke with Bentley chief Dr. Franz-Josef Paefgen about the company's plans for the future, and this is what reportedly came up. Although styling is anticipated to follow the cues from the new Continental, the four-door coupe, if approved, would likely borrow its underpinnings from the Audi A7 while employing the new 4-liter V8 being co-developed with Audi. Pricing, meanwhile, could undercut the Continental and give Bentley a new entry-level model. One with a sleeker roofline to boot.

Paris 2010: 2011 Bentley Continental GT - Click above for high-res image gallery

Bentley has provided its Continental GT with a total refresh for the 2011 model year. The styling has been updated and the luxury coupe is expected to gain a second engine option. The traditional 6.0-liter W12 unit will still be available albeit with more power, but Bentley has also let slip that it will offer a new V8 engine. This eight-cylinder unit will apparently be a twin-turbocharged Audi engine which is potentially capable of 550 horsepower. Now, word from Autocar suggests that Bentley would like to pair that engine with Audi's S tronic dual-clutch transmission.

The S tronic unit is currently employed throughout most of the Four-Ringed family lineup. Adding it to the Bentley will present an interesting challenge, however, due to the fact that the underbody of the Continental GT has a nice ZF six-speed automatic transmission-shaped hole. The ZF automatic is the gearbox used for the W12. Bentley's engineers are now doing feasibility studies to see if they can get the dual-clutch gearbox to fit.

Considering that Bentley's enormous engines would put many a freight train to shame, unveiling the Continental Supersports as the most powerful in the company's history is saying quite a bit. But that doesn't mean it's lacking room for improvement. Leave it to Anderson Germany, then to find that extra bit of oomph.

The Deutsche tuning house that recently gave us the 590-horsepower tuned Balboni edition Lamborghini Gallardo has now turned its attention to the Supersports, cranking up the muscle from 621 horsepower to 685. The power boost comes courtesy of a remapped ECU, a new air filter and a variable exhaust that also has the benefit of dropping 38 pounds off the Supersport's already-reduced curb weight.

The example you see here, decked out in matte silver with 22-inch modular alloys and a refitted interior, has also been fitted with Anderson's new body kit. Only 300 sets will be produced, capable of fitting the standard GT, GTC and Speed models as well. After that, we don't doubt Anderson will start work on modifying the next-gen Continental. Have a closer look in the high-res image gallery below.

2011 Bentley Continental GT live debut - Click above for high-res image gallery

Here is your first glimpse at the redesigned 2011 Bentley Continental GT as it makes its world debut at the Paris Motor Show. Earlier, we mentioned that it will receive a nearly four percent price hike over the previous model, which is nothing compared to the overall improvements the new car has received.

Like any car, it has good and bad angles (obviously, the exception to this rule is the Maserati GranTurisumo which looks beautiful from every angle...) - we'll hold off final judgment until we can see it outside in natural light, not surrounded by a mob of flash bulbs and clamoring journalists. See for yourself in our high-res gallery of live images below.

2011 Bentley Continental GT - Click above for high-res image gallery

Bentley recently pulled the digital wraps off of its redesigned 2011 Continental GT to get your heart pumping a bit. Today the British automaker wants to get your wallet pumping. Pricing has just been announced for the new Conti and the MSRP rises by just under four percent - an increase from $182,800 (2010 Continental GT MSRP) to $189,900.

What does that four percent rate hike get you? A lot actually. The W12 engine produces more power to the tune of 567 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque; an increase of nearly three and eight percent respectively. The interior has been upgraded and features a welcome-to-the-modern-era-finally navigation system as well as an increase of 46 mm of rear seat legroom. This is good news for any Continental GT owners looking to date taller supermodels.

What can't be measured by facts and figures is the updated appearance of this handsome car from Crewe. The new lines on the 2011 Continental GT look downright Muscle Beach without detracting from the overall elegance. The fenders arc and crease beautifully, grabbing the lines started by the nose, flowing into the shoulder and then back out into the tail.

The 2011 Bentley Continental GT may be getting a four percent price increase over the outgoing model, but that $7,100 buys you a whole new ultra-luxe touring experience. Check out all the details in the press release after the break.

With the new Bentley Continental GT on its way, you can bet it's just a matter of time before the rest of the Continental family - GTC convertible and Flying Spur sedan - join the coupe under the knife. But if you can't wait for the new Spur - or fear your existing one will soon look out-of-date - Wald International has announced a series of aftermarket upgrades to the big sedan that ought to set yours apart.

The package is primarily visual, adopting a fresh aero kit comprised of a new front bumper (incorporating bigger vents and LED running lights), side skirts, a rear bumper with faux-diffuser, and itty-bitty little spoilers on the trunk lid and side windows. A quad-pipe exhaust system is also on offer, along with extra carbon fiber trim and spoke-tastic new wheels.

Check it out in the gallery below, and keep your eyes peeled on this space for the next-generation Spur to come Flying along any month now. Thanks to everyone for the tips!
