2010 Barrett-Jackson Orange County Auction - Click above for high-res image gallery

The first Barrett-Jackson Orange County auction is about wrapped up Costa Mesa, California today, and while the numbers might have been a bit lower than hoped-for this time around, there were still good prices for top-level machinery. Barrett-Jackson knows what it's doing, and Orange County is definitely a car-lovers' paradise, but there will surely be some doubters about this venue's long-term viability.

Take a look at the attendance though - at the turnout of vendors and manufacturers, of bidders and gawkers - and you'll see that the only thing lacking was an abundance of really high-quality offerings. For every numbers-matching LS6 '70 Chevelle SS convertible, there were ten daily-driver VW Beetles. The overall take was boosted by several charity lots, as is often seen at Barrett-Jackson events, but beyond that cluster of noteworthy vehicles, there wasn't much for bidders to excited about.

There was a fringe benefit to this, however. It gave us a chance to wander around the grounds a bit more than usual. To that end, we've pulled 50 of our favorite photos from the hundreds we shot over the weekend and posted them in the wrap-up gallery below. Clicking through should give you a sense of what it was like to be at Barrett-Jackson's OC event this weekend. You'll find the good, the bad and the fugly in there, but each and every one of these cars sold, so who are we to judge?

1979 Chevrolet Corvette Custom - Click above for high-res image gallery

Ever see an IMSA race from the late '70s or early '80s? If so, you probably saw one of the Greenwood widebody C3 Corvettes thundering through the field. Those massively-flared fenders barely contained the fury of the twelve-inch wide rear slicks as they clawed for traction. For fans of those racing cars, there was good news from the Greenwood garages, too. At the time, John Greenwood offered those body kits, as well as suspension and engine upgrades for the street, much like Callaway or Pratt & Miller do today for the C6 Chevrolet Corvette. At this weekend's Barrett-Jackson auction in Orange County, a particularly nice example of Greenwood's handiwork crossed the block.

We half-expected Bruce Wayne to be the high bidder, as this car was done up in a Dark Knight-worthy ebony that accentuated the flares and spoilers in bat-tastic fashion. The info card even referred to the ride as the "Batvette," which struck us as an ideal moniker. Powered by an original and stock L-82, with glass tops and aluminum wheels, this matching-numbers, 18,200-original-mile Corvette sold for just under a dollar per odometer mile: $18,000. 1962 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible - Click above for high-res image gallery

Check eBay Motors or Craigslist for a '62 Cadillac convertible and you're likely to find a slew of them for less than ten grand. A particularly nice example might fetch twice that. So why did this particular Series 62 convertible bring in $40,000 at the first Barrett-Jackson auction in Orange County, California? Probably because OC-dwellers loves them some Louis V.

Louis Vuitton roofWhile this Series 62 Custom Convertible was pretty stock underhood, the car featured a tangerine metal-flake paint job courtesy of House of Kolors, a custom touchscreen sound system with over 1000 watts of power, and ginormous 22-inch wheels. All that aside, it was the monogrammed top and interior that really put this special caddy into the 40K range. What seemed like a square mile of genuine Louis Vuitton leather and "vinylized Egyptian cotton" - just like the handbags! - was used to fabricate the custom top and to cover almost every interior surface save for the gauges. Whether this car will be driven or used as a tear-down for its handbag raw materials is a question only the new owner can answer. Check out the gallery below.

1990 Lamborghini LM002 American - Click above for high-res image gallery

Not only is this one of just 48 Lamborghini LM002 Americans produced, but it's the only "Rambo Lambo" we've ever seen finished in color-shifting DuPont ChromaLusion paint. That may be a good thing, depending on your personal sense of style and how it meshes with your image of Lamborghini. These Italian Hummers were built for military use but never really caught on. Maybe those expensive and fragile Countach V12s in the engine bay had something to do with it. Even after Lamborghini switched to the more robust Diablo mills, the trucks were still relegated to private service, mainly in the fleets of wealthy sheiks and celebs.

The 5.2-liter, 420-horsepower Diablo V12 in this particular LM has just 3,068 original miles on it, and in addition to the chromatic color-shift paint, it features bespoke magnesium wheels, revised hood and trim, along with polished aluminum skid plates. It once belonged to renowned wildlife artist Christian Lassen, who had it painted this quad-toned hue. At Barrett-Jackson's inaugural Orange County auction, this LM002 hammered home $75,000. 1970 Plymouth Road Runner "Hammer" - Click above for high-res image gallery

This big-block '70 Plymouth Roadrunner was at SEMA last year, but many readers may better remember it from its appearance as a feature car in Hot Rod magazine, a spot on the television show RIDES, and its big-screen debut in The Fast and the Furious franchise. Vin Diesel's character, Dom Toretto, showed up in the closing minutes of Tokyo Drift behind the wheel of this malevolent Mopar, and it made enough of an impact that it returned in the 2009 follow-up as well.

Underhood, there's a supercharged 500-cubic-inch Mopar wedge pumping out 750 horsepower. To those familiar with the car, it's known simply as Hammer. The bidder who brought home this Plymouth also got a GMP limited edition 1:18-scale die-cast model of the car. Its closing bid of $175,000 made Hammer one of the top sellers at the 2010 Barrett-Jackson Orange County auction. Check out our mini-gallery below.

Project American Heroes Chevelle - Click above for high-res image gallery

The top seller in Barrett-Jackson's first Orange County auction on Saturday was a very special Chevy Chevelle. Built by Route 66 Motorsports and chronicled by Super Chevy Magazine, it's known as the Project American Heroes Chevelle, and it brought a cool quarter of a million bucks for the Armed Forces Foundation. This Chevelle is the third in a series of souped-up muscle cars built for this particular charity, which supports the families of injured veterans.

The car itself is a 1970 Chevelle, with an intercooled, supercharged GM Performance Parts LSA engine where you might expect to see an LS5 or LS6 big block. Detroit Speed & Engineering did the suspension, the binders are Baer's new "6P" brake system, power is routed through a TCI Automotive 6x 6-speed 4L80E transmission, and the end result of these and about 30 other component contributors is one badass Chevelle that sold for $250,000 on Saturday afternoon. As with just about any car auction, the words "Shelby" and "Cobra" always translate to lots of money. This was the case at Barrett-Jackson this year, with two of the top cars bearing the Cobra moniker. The first, CSX2091, is a clean 1963 289 Cobra with a fully rebuilt motor generating 417 horsepower. The second is chassis CSX2281, a clean Wimbledon White 1964 289 Cobra that's been through various upgrades, restorations, and rebuilds over the years, but is currently in prime condition.

Bidding for both cars quickly shot into the six figures, with each car finally topping the $400,000 mark. The white Cobra reached $478,500 and the black Cobra took $401,500 after auction fees. Those figures would have been the top selling cars for the auction except for a 1964 Chevrolet Corvette that inexplicably sold for $550,000. Hit the jump for more details on the two Cobras.

There were plenty of charity cars up for auction at Barrett-Jackson the last few days, but perhaps the one that benefited the most worthy cause was donated by GM. They brought out a 427 Limited Edition Corvette Z06 worth more than $80,000 to Scottsdale and promised to donate the entire proceeds of the sale to the American Red Cross to help those who were affected by the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

Fortunately, the bidders in attendance hadn't exhausted all of their funds by the time the car crossed the block, and a generous buyer put down a $200,000 offer for the car. You can visit www.redcross.org or text HAITI to 90999 to donate yourself, and although you won't go home with a new Corvette, you'll be helping out a very worthy cause.

We said earlier that the Bonneville Boss Transporter with its Proud American land speed rocket was the most unique vehicle at the auction. Well...we might just have to take that back. Behold this "1952 Watson Roadster" (that's what it's registered as, at least) built by the Blastolene Brothers, better known as the Indy Special. You might remember some of the other Blastolene creations including Leno's tank car, the Hemi Trike, and Piss'd Off Pete.

The Indy Special is everything you'd expect from a Blastolene-built car. Like Leno's, it has a 1792ci M47 Patton tank engine, although naturally aspirated, producing 910 horsepower and 1500 lb-ft torque. At 270 inches long and a weight of 8400 lbs the sheer size is enough to impress just about anyone. Just about everything on the car being hand-built including the aluminum body, and we've heard it cost over $400,000 to make. That makes the final price of $280,500 actually seem reasonable.

First Production 1966 Shelby GT350 - Click above for high-res image gallery

There are quite a few Shelby Mustangs here at Barrett-Jackson, but if we could only buy one it would be this '66 GT350. What's so special about it? For starters, it's the very first one built. It's also got everything we would want in a classic Shelby - Wimbledon White paint with Blue Le Mans stripes, 4-speed transmission, 15-inch Cragar wheels, Goodyear blue dot tires and a fully-restored 289ci V8. The car also comes with its original owner's manual, SAAC club documentation and is listed in the Shelby American World Registry.

What's it worth? The market has spoken and it's said $247,500. That's quite a bit of cash, but like we said, if there's any Shelby here that we would buy, this would be it. Hit the jump for a full description of the car courtesy of Barrett-Jackson.

2011 Ford Mustang Daytona 500 Pace Car - Click above for high-res image gallery

The 2011 Mustang was just introduced a few weeks ago in Detroit, and already one lucky buyer will be able to get his hands on the very first modern 5.0 Mustang available for sale. That particular Mustang also happens to be the pace car for the upcoming Daytona 500 next month, making it all the more special. It's the first time a Ford has set the pace for the Great American Racing in forty years. Yes, Ford announced that they will be 50 replicas of the car, but this is the real deal.

There are quite a few other benefits that come with this particular car. Both Mark Fields and Carl Edwards were on stage with the car, and between the two of them they threw in a trip to the Daytona 500, VIP access to the Ford hospitality center, a tour of the pits, and a lap of the track in the passenger seat with Edwards. Not bad at all. Did we mention that proceeds from the sale will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation? With all those incentives, the final price of $330,000 made it the most expensive car of the auction so far.

Ring Brothers Mustangs at Barrett-Jackson - Click above for high-res image gallery

We've been fans of the Ring Brothers since we first laid eyes on their Reactor Mustang at the SEMA Show back in 2006. The quality of the materials used and the bespoke designs made it perhaps the most beautiful classic Mustang we've ever seen. Since then they have followed up with the RAZOR Camaro and Ford Fairlane Afterburner, both equally impressive cars.

While it probably takes the Ring Borthers hundreds if not thousands of hours to build each car, but bidders at Barrett-Jackson had the chance to immediately get their hands on not one but two Ring Brothers creations. The Reactor Mustang as well as another '67 Fastback nicknamed "Copperback" were both up for sale at no reserve. The Reactor Mustang topped out at $253,000 and the Copperback went home to a new buyer for $159,000, both bought well in our opinion. For more details on each Mustang just follow the jump.

Petty's Garage Custom 2009 Dodge Challenger - Click above for high-res image gallery

There are several charity cars up for auction this week at Barrett-Jackson, but this custom Dodge Challenger owned by Richard Petty might just be our favorite. Built by Petty's Garage, the Challenger is painted in legendary Petty Blue and features a 426ci Hemi V8 with 585 horsepower and 560 lb-ft torque. Other modifications include hand-fabricated body components, upgraded suspension, Brembo brakes, and a center exhaust.

As we mentioned, the all of the proceeds of the car will go to charity, and the $130,000 selling price of the car will go a long way in benefiting the Petty Family Foundation and its charities including Victory Junction and Paralyzed Veterans of America. 1975 Bonneville Boss Custom Hauler and Proud American LSR Car - Click above for high-res image gallery

You might recognize this unique vehicle from when we spotted it at Cars and Coffee a few months back. It's the Bonneville Boss transporter and Proud American land speed rocket car, and it's undoubtedly the most unique vehicle up for sale at Barrett-Jackson this weekend. We don't know what's cooler - the one-off, 32 foot, 5-axle hauler or the death wish of a rocket that sits on top.

The transporter and rocket car were part of SPEED TV's fantasy bidder contest, and even after trying to come up with a number, we had absolutely no idea what it would go for. We could see it easily getting into the six figure range, but as it turns out only a bid of $42,000 was needed to win, making the final price of the car $46,200. First Production 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe - Click above for high-res image gallery

For the last few years Barrett-Jackson has become the place to sell "production firsts" like the Dodge Challenger, Corvette ZR1, and Shelby GT500 KR to name a few. For 2010, it seems we've run out of new muscle cars to auction off, but Cadillac decided to take advantage of a captive and wealthy audience to unload the very first production 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe. We'd probably be more interested if it was a CTS-V Coupe, as we don't see a run-of-the-mill two-door CTS becoming a collectible, regardless of when it was produced.

Still, we can't fault Cadillac too much for bringing the first CTS Coupe to Barrett-Jackson, since all of the winning bid minus the cost of the car will be donated to the College for Creative Studies. The top bidder doesn't get this exact car, but instead gets to special-order his or her own CTS Coupe with the choice of color, engine, transmission, trim, and any options. So what's it worth? The car sold yesterday for a respectable price of $95,700 including buyers commission.

Hurst Mustang Convertible Pace Car at Barrett-Jackson - Click above for high-res image gallery

Last year Hurst brought out their spectacular 50th Anniversary Dodge Viper to Barrett-Jackson, selling it for $275,000 to benefit their favorite charity, Victory Junction. They are back again for 2010, this time with the Mustang Convertible Pace Car that was actually used in the Mustang Challenge race series. The car was donated by Woodhouse Auto Family, Hurst Performance Vehicles and other suppliers to help children attend Victory Junction's newest Camp for Kids in Kansas City.

The car features plenty of performance upgrades including a Roush supercharger, Eibach suspension, Magnaflow exhaust, 20-inch Hurst wheels and a custom white interior. Being an official pace car, it's also got the cool light bar and headlights that can alternately flash. All of that combined with the motivation of charity brought a final bid of $120,000. The 2011 Shelby GT350 seemed to have a polarizing effect when it debuted at Barrett-Jackson's opening gala event on Monday night. Some of you loved it and others instantly objected to everything from the looks of the car to the $33,995 price tag that doesn't include the base car. With 500 horsepower from the new 5.0-liter V8, there's no arguing that the 2011 GT350 has plenty of performance potential, but is another $60,000+ Mustang what people really want?

The first thing we did when we arrived in Scottsdale last night was to make a bee-line to check out the car in person. We also caught up with Jim Owens, Shelby's Vice President of Marketing and Communications, who talked to us about the car. Follow the jump for what we learned about the 2011 GT350.

2010 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction Preview - Click above for high-res image gallery

What a week to be in Arizona. Governor Jan Brewer declared a state of emergency yesterday following the worst storm that AZ has seen in decades, and not only are we spending the next several days here, but we're actually going to be in a tent most of the time. Granted, Barrett-Jackson's tent is the largest ever built by man and can probably withstand quite a storm, but for some reason that doesn't make us feel much better.

Even so, the flooding, 50-mph wind gusts and tornadoes (yes, there was actually a tornado warning in Phoenix last night) won't stop us from covering the annual auction week here in Scottsdale. It took a six-hour, white knuckle drive from Los Angeles, but we're here and ready to soak in more fine classic cars than most people will see in their lifetime. We'll be covering all the highlights from the Barrett-Jackson and RM auctions this weekend. Car companies have been quick to donate money in the wake of the earthquake, and now special edition vehicles are hitting the auction block to provide still more assistance. Chrysler announced that it was donating a 300C with 300 signatures from A-list celebs like Tom Hanks and Merryl Streep (full story coming soon), and now General Motors is following up on its $100,000 cash donation with a special edition Corvette.

The Vette in question is one of 427 Special Edition 2008 Corvette Z06 models with former Corvette Plant Manager Will Cooksey's signature and vehicle number on the center console. The Special Edition Z06 is also the only 2008 model that sports Crystal Red Metallic Tint Coat paint, a Stinger-style stripe on the front hood and fascia and a painted Z06 spoiler. This Vette becomes more prestigious due to the fact that it is the 427th and last copy of the limited series. The Z06 will be auctioned off at the 39th annual Barret-Jackson event on January 23. Former Beach Boy Al Jardine's Hemi 'Cuda - Click above for high-res image gallery

Al Jardine, a founding member of the Beach Boys, was definitely not feeling good vibrations with this one. His restored Hemi Cuda recreation was stolen in St. Louis in 1975. It was returned that same year, but the authorities never removed the convertible from the stolen vehicle database.

The car was slated for auction at this year's Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, but when a Motor Vehicle Department official noticed that the numbers on the car didn't match those on the title, the Phoenix police impounded the classic. Turns out the car wears remakes of its original VIN, but the 'Cuda was given a new VIN when it was re-registered after being stolen.

The St. Louis police gave the all-clear, though, so the Plymouth has been released and will make it to the auction dais. It will probably be playing, softly, "Don't worry baby, everything will be all right..."
