This beaten and battered 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 prototype is proof that you can buy just about any type of vehicle at Barrett-Jackson. The car was used as an SVT test car to develop the 2013 Shelby GT500, and was piloted at race tracks like Sebring Raceway and at Ford's Arizona proving grounds. Even Carroll Shelby himself had a stint in the car to test its merits.

From the look of it, the GT500 prototype is still in testing condition. There is plenty of dirt and grime still on the front of the car, and various wiring and diagnostic equipment are still inside the vehicle. Even so, the car is a piece of rolling history, and the bidding represented that. As an added bonus, the winner gets the opportunity to buy the first production 2013 GT500 from Ford.

The Shelby commanded $300,000 - all of which was generously donated by Ford to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. You can see our live photos of the car above or watch a video of its auction after the jump.

Barrett-Jackson 2012: $300,000 takes home 2013 Shelby GT500 prototype [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 21 Jan 2012 23:11:00 EST.
Way back in 2009, a small but hopeful automaker called Devon Motorworks came to life with a somewhat shocking vehicle that it planned to sell as a true bespoke American supercar. Sadly, and for a number of reasons (not the least of which was the bankruptcy of its major parts donor), the Devon GTX never made it into the hands of the public.

That doesn't mean Devon never assembled any cars. As you can see, there's at least one Devon GTX thundering down the road. The first Devon GTX, serial number one, went up for auction at the 2012 Barrett-Jackson event in Scottsdale. Powered by the engine and running gear of a 2008 Dodge Viper, this car is completely street legal with a 2012 special construction title.

And now it has a new owner, bought for the sum of $220,000 after a final gavel price of $200,000. We don't know if that's a steal or an overpayment, but either way, we think the GTX is pretty cool. See the car in all its chrome and black glory in our high-res gallery of live images below, plus the video after the break, where you'll also see its official auction description.
Continue reading Barrett-Jackson 2012: One of two Devon GTX supercars reaches bid of $200,000 [w/video]

Barrett-Jackson 2012: One of two Devon GTX supercars reaches bid of $200,000 [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 21 Jan 2012 22:40:00 EST.
What price would you pay to own a piece of history? We're thinking that might depend on what sort of historic significance we're talking about... or, in the case of this 1964 Cadillac Hearse, how morbid that history may be.

As you may remember, Barrett-Jackson in 2011 auctioned off a 1963 Pontiac Bonneville ambulance that some thought carried John F. Kennedy's body to the hospital after his fatal shooting. Turns out the provenance of that machine was very much in question, and bidding stalled at just $120,000.

Following up that unimpressive sale a year prior, Barrett-Jackson decided to bring out a car who's history was never in question: the car that carried the casket containing JFK, along with his wife, Jacqueline Kennedy, from Parkland Memorial Hospital to the airport at Love Field.

Regardless of the fact that it is known to have carried JFK's body, it only garnered a high bid of $160,000. After fees, the new buyer will pay $176,000.00 to own this 1964 Cadillac Hearse. Check out our live images of the car at Barrett-Jackson above, and read more about it after the break.
Continue reading Barrett-Jackson 2012: 1964 Cadillac JFK Hearse garners final bid of $160,000 [w/video]

Barrett-Jackson 2012: 1964 Cadillac JFK Hearse garners final bid of $160,000 [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 21 Jan 2012 22:30:00 EST.
What's "the most famous television car in the world"? We suppose that depends on who you ask, but to many, nothing but the General Lee could possibly hold the title. Of course, there wasn't just one General Lee. In fact, scores of orange Dodge Chargers were filmed for "The Dukes of Hazzard," and most of them never survived their first televised escapade.

Not so Lee 1, so named because it was the car that famously jumped over a Hazzard County police cruiser in the very first episode of the hit series. If you've ever seen the opening credits, you know the car we're talking about... it flew 16 feet in the air over a distance of 82 feet. And, as you may have guessed, it didn't exactly stick the landing.

No matter. Because of its notoriety, Lee 1 was saved from destruction and restored over a period of 16 months. And, due to that same famous history, we thought it might draw plenty of attention from the crowds at the 2012 Barrett-Jackson auction. In reality, bidding ended at just $110,000. That makes the final sale price a seemingly paltry $121,000.

If you're as excited as we are by the 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1, it might be wise to understand the historical significance of those three letters at the end of Chevy's retrofied muscle car. Way back in 1969 - a year some consider to be the apogee of Camaro history - the automaker built just 69 ZL1s, each powered by an aluminum-block 427-cubic-inch V8 that was otherwise unavailable in the Camaro and built specifically for drag racing.

The '69 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is highly coveted by collectors, and a perfectly stunning example was auction at the 2012 Barrett-Jackson event in Scottsdale. Though this particular ZL1 saw plenty of use on the drag strip, it's been completely restored to like-new condition. We just drove the new 2012 ZL1 (full report coming soon), so we were keenly interested in seeing this one cross the auction block. The final bid came in at $410,000, putting the actual sale at $451,000.

Most, if not all, know the story of the 1948 Tucker sedan. Yes, there was a movie, and it's well worth watching. But even if you've never seen or heard of a the machine, one look at Preston Tucker's Torpedo is all it takes for you to realize it's something special.

Just 51 Tucker Torpedo sedans were built before the company went out of business. Those were 51 special machines, though, with a rear engine (like the iconic Volkswagen Beetle and Porsche 911), disc brakes and fuel injection - a combination practically unheard of at the time.

Perhaps it's the so-called Cyclops Eye, though, that is most interesting about the Tucker Torpedo. This third headlight moves with the car's steering wheel, helping the driver see around turns. Such technology may not be uncommon today, but in 1948, it was revolutionary.

The final bid came in at an impressive $2,650,000. That means the new owner will pay $2,915,000 to drive this Tucker home.
Of all the concept cars ever shown off to a fawning public, one of the coolest has got to be this 1954 Desoto Adventurer II Coupe. It was originally built in 1954, and it sits atop a Chrysler Imperial chassis with a body designed and built by Ghia.

It's not surprising that this Desoto Ghia concept looks so beautiful with names like Savonuzzi and Exner listed as its designers. Take special note of the sliding rear window, which allows this car to be converted into a sort of reverse convertible.

Including all fees, this concept sold for $1,430,000.
For the first time since 1973, a Pierce-Arrow Silver Arrow has gone up for auction. Just five of these historic machines were ever built, and only three are known to exist today. So, it's rare. But it's also fast. In 1933, when the Silver Arrow went on the market, its top speed of 115 miles per hour was extremely impressive.

So, when a Pierce-Arrow rolled down the block at the 2012 Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, there were plenty of eyes glued on the stage. And there were also bidders. Deep-pocketed bidders, in fact. Before the gavel fell, bidding quickly passed the million-dollar mark, with several interested parties.

The final bid came in at an even $2,000,000 and that means the final selling price was $2.2 million. Check out our live photo gallery of the 1933 Pierce-Arrow above and watch it cross the break on video after the break.

Barrett-Jackson 2012: 1933 Pierce-Arrow sells for $2 million [UPDATE: w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 21 Jan 2012 19:25:00 EST.
We all dream of one day walking into a long-abandoned barn in the middle of nowhere and finding a classic muscle or race car, needing little more than some freshening to be restored to its previous glory. But that never happens, right?

Wrong. As evidenced by the 1965 Shelby GT350 that is being auctioned at the 2012 Barrett-Jackson auction. As the story goes, this car was still in the possession of its original owner (purchased on September 29, 1965) until 2009, and had only accumulated 44,000 miles. Since then, it's seen only basic care and maintenance to make it suitable for the road, but the entire body, paint and interior are all original and untouched. We hope it forever stays this way... a car is only original once, and it can never be unrestored.

We figured there might be a lot of interest in the car, but even we underestimated just how much. The final bid for the car was an astounding $350,000 with the final price set at $385,000 after auction fees.

Check out a video of the car hitting the auction block and read more about its story after the break, and check out our high-res images live from Scottsdale above.
Continue reading Barrett-Jackson 2012: 1965 Shelby GT350 barn find headed to a new home [UPDATE: w/video]

Barrett-Jackson 2012: 1965 Shelby GT350 barn find headed to a new home [UPDATE: w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 21 Jan 2012 18:38:00 EST.
Earlier this week we showed you the recently-unveiled 2013 Chevrolet Corvette 427 Convertible at Barrett-Jackson. Chevrolet didn't just bring the car to display, though, and announced that it would be auctioning the very first production example for charity.

There was plenty of excitement as the Corvette was brought up on the auction block, and bidding quickly skyrocketed past the six-figure mark. During the middle of the auction, a few extra goodies were thrown in, including a Jeff Gordon racing suit and a VIP trip to the 2012 Daytona 500, and soon thereafter bidding quickly went passed the half-million-dollar mark to finally rest at $600,000. The new owner of the car? Ron Pratte, the same man who has generously bought many previous charity auction cars at Barrett-Jackson over the last several years. To top it all off, Eddie Vannoy even added on another $100,000 donation to the price of the car, all of which will be going to benefit the AARP Drive For Hunger.

The time has come for the custom widebody Mustang from Galpin Auto Sports to find a new owner. Built by Galpin for industrial company SPX, this specially built Mustang features a hand-built body that widens the car by an incredible nine inches highlighted by PPG Candy Apple Red paint. Under the hood is a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 producing over 700 horsepower, and it has also been fitted with forged three-piece wheels, a custom suede interior, upgraded exhaust system and more.

Whether it was the look and sound of the car or whether bidders were simply feeling generous, this attention-grabbing pony car nabbed a final bid of $160,000, all of which will be donated to benefit the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
When Steve Saleen launched his new company, SMS Supercars, back in 2008, he announced that he would be expanding his portfolio of vehicles to include the muscle car offerings from Chevrolet and Dodge. First up was the 570 and 570X Challenger, followed soon after by the 302 Mustang.

Now, Steve Saleen's muscle car trifecta is finally complete, as SMS officially unveiled the 620 Camaro at Barrett-Jackson this week. The car maintains the styling cues featured on both the Challenger and Mustang with an aggressive front splitter, side skirts, rear diffuser, butterfly hood and chrome 20-inch wheels. Inside is a custom leather interior, and under the hood, the 6.2-liter V8 has been supercharged to 620 horsepower and 570 pound-feet torque.

In addition to unveiling the car at Barrett-Jackson this week, SMS actually auctioned off the first production example last night. This particular car was also a special "Bondurant Edition" in honor of Steve Saleen's former racing teammate, Bob Bondurant, and the two decided to donate the proceeds from the sale to two charities: Cox Charities and the Make A Wish Foundation of Arizona.

So, how did the car do? Bidding for the SMS 620 Camaro eventually reached the $100,000 mark, meaning the two charities will be getting a significant donation and the lucky new owner just got a nice tax write-off. Did we mention a Bondurant three-day performance driving school is included with the car?

You can see photos of the 2012 SMS 620 Camaro in the gallery above, and check out a video of the car being auctioned off at Barrett-Jackson in the video after the jump.
Continue reading SMS Supercars unveils 620 Camaro, auctions first example for charity at Barrett-Jackson

SMS Supercars unveils 620 Camaro, auctions first example for charity at Barrett-Jackson originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 Jan 2012 17:32:00 EST.
Last week, Chevrolet announced its latest special edition Corvette, the 2013 427 Convertible, as a sendoff to the C6 before the C7 arrives for 2014. Now we've had our first look at the car in the flesh, as Chevrolet is showing it off for the first time here at Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale, AZ.

Setting the 427 Convertible apart from the standard Corvette are special graphics, badges and unique wheels, but most importantly, it gains the Z06's 7.0-liter 505 horsepower V8 under the hood, making it the most powerful drop top Corvette to ever come from Bowling Green. This example also sports the 60th Anniversary Package that includes Arctic White exterior paint, Pearl Silver Blue racing stripes and a Diamond Blue leather interior. What really makes this particular car special, though, is that it's the very first production Corvette 427 Convertible and is set to be auctioned off for charity tomorrow afternoon. We'll have live auction results and more pictures then, but for now, check out our live gallery of photos above.
Barrett-Jackson: 2013 Chevrolet Corvette 427 Convertible debuts originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 Jan 2012 10:30:00 EST.
For the last several years Ford has partnered with Barrett-Jackson to auction off some very special vehicles for charity. Past cars have included the first production examples of the Shelby GT500KR and Shelby GT as well as special one-offs like last year's Grabber Blue Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca, all of which have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

For 2012 Ford is once again auction off a Mustang for charity, but this year's car is a little different. Up for grabs will be a 2013 Shelby GT500 development car used by SVT to hone the production 'Stang. This prototype was run extensively at Sebring and the high speed oval at Ford's Arizona proving grounds and was even driven by Carroll Shelby himself during the development process. The car has some unique features including a full roll cage and Recaro racing seats, but it will likely remain a museum piece as it can't be registered for road use.

There will be hundreds of collector cars going up for auction at Barrett-Jackson this month, but few will be as interesting as this custom creation nicknamed the "Lockheed Lakester". The car, registered for road use as a 1917 Crow Lakester Custom, was hand-built from the wing tip tank of a Lockheed Super Constellation and uses a mix of automotive and aircraft parts. Wedged inside the tank is a 1.8-liter turbocharged Hemi four-cylinder mated to a five-speed manual transmission, and the two-person cockpit features gunner seats and an air-speed indicator in lieu of a speedometer.

We'll be bringing you live coverage of Barrett-Jackson later this month, so be sure to check back for more photos of the "Lockheed Lakester" and more in just a few weeks.
1917 Crow Lakester Custom headed to Barrett-Jackson originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 Jan 2012 14:32:00 EST.
For the past several years, SPEED has invited classic car fans to participate in the Barrett-Jackson auction with the Hagerty Fantasy Bid contest. Viewers compete to correctly guess the sale prices for select vehicles, and those who accumulate the most points come away with prizes.

SPEED will be holding the contest once again for 2012, and today announced that it will be sweetening the deal for participants - a customized 2011 Shelby GT500 with 750 horsepower. The car has been upgraded with a Ford Racing supercharger system, adjustable suspension system, Wilwood brakes and a few unique visual enhancements.

Lest you think your lack of knowledge of the classic car market leaves you no chance at winning this special Shelby GT500, don't fret. Simply making a fantasy bid during the auction automatically enters you to win the car, regardless of its accuracy. Of course, if your guesses are spot-on then you have a chance to win a variety of prizes, including a 60-inch Samsung television, gift cards, fuel cards and an iPad 2.

The Hagerty Fantasy Bid starts on January 19th, and you can register over at www.speedfantasybid.com starting on January 13th. Hit the jump for more details about the contest and the Shelby GT500 giveaway.
Continue reading SPEED TV giving away customized Shelby GT500 as part of Hagerty Fantasy Bid at Barrett-Jackson

SPEED TV giving away customized Shelby GT500 as part of Hagerty Fantasy Bid at Barrett-Jackson originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 04 Jan 2012 18:30:00 EST.
As the Poison frontman is wont to sing, every rose has its thorn. Indeed, if the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Bret Michaels sold at the 2011 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction was that flower, his latest consignments are as painful as pricked fingers.

Michaels will be offering three vehicles at the sale, to be held January 15-22, 2012. The first (and the only marginally interesting one) is a 2004 Bentley Continental GT. The other two are Blue Oval SUVs that might more appropriately be found on a used car lot: A 2004 Lincoln Navigator and a 2011 Ford Explorer.

Clearly, it was nothin' but a good time for Michaels at last year's Barrett-Jackson, where his non-original Camaro fetched a remarkable $200,000. That's about five times what it might have sold for without playing the celebrity card. But hey, at least it was a '69 Camaro and Bret even threw in an autographed guitar.

This year, however, Michaels' consignments look like what the cat dragged in. While Barrett-Jackson is known for its unabashed embrace of celebrity cars of dubious quality and provenance, these offerings just hit a wrong note.
Continue reading Bret Michaels selling family truckster and more at Barrett-Jackson

Bret Michaels selling family truckster and more at Barrett-Jackson originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 31 Dec 2011 14:02:00 EST.
The annual Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, AZ is less than a month away, and car aficionados from around the country are already gearing up for the six-day collector car sell-a-thon. One of the vehicles up for grabs will be this custom widebody Mustang that we first told you about in August. At the time, this ponycar was a mere rendering, but since then Galpin has completed the Mustang and readied it for the auction in January.

Like several of the cars that cross the block, the proceeds from the sale of the widebody Mustang will be donated to charity, specifically the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, thanks to the generosity of SPX, the company that financed the construction of the car. We're guessing there won't be any trouble finding eager bidders to donate their hard-earned cash, as this Mustang comes with a 700-horsepower supercharged 5.0-liter V8 between the front fenders, a red suede interior, custom PPG paint, a 1000-watt stereo and more.

You can read more about the Galpin widebody Mustang and the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in the press release after the jump, and be sure to look out for our live coverage of the Barrett-Jackson auction next month.
Continue reading Galpin widebody Mustang ready for its charity auction at Barrett-Jackson

Galpin widebody Mustang ready for its charity auction at Barrett-Jackson originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 29 Dec 2011 09:29:00 EST.
There was a touch of controversy when Barrett-Jackson auctioned what had been purported to be the 1963 Pontiac Bonneville ambulance that transported John F. Kennedy to the hospital the day he was assassinated. There is no such doubt about this (at least, not at the time of writing): the 1964 Cadillac Hearse (Lot #1293) that carried JFK's casket to the Dallas airport.

Built as a showpiece for a funeral director's convention that took place just before the assassination, it was bought by a Dallas funeral home when the convention ended. The very next month it was put to a use no one could have expected. It has has just three owners, and will be up for auction at the 41st Annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction, Jan. 15-22, at WestWorld of Scottsdale, Arizona. Follow the jump for a fuller history of the car.
Continue reading Barrett-Jackson to auction hearse that carried JFK in Dallas

Barrett-Jackson to auction hearse that carried JFK in Dallas originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 18 Dec 2011 18:03:00 EST.
Galpin Auto Sports has teamed up with specialty manufacturer SPX and Barrett-Jackson to create a custom widebody that will sell for charity early next year.

Inspired by the 1969 Boss 429, this Mustang features a hand-fabricated metal widebody kit that adds an incredible nine inches to the width of the car, functional side scoops above the rear wheels, and a functional hood scoop from an actual Boss 429. Under the hood is a Ford Racing supercharger system that boosts the 5.0L V8 to 700 horsepower. For the interior, Galpin added custom red suede and black leather seats and upholstery and a 1000-watt JLT audio system. To top it all off, the car is painted in a PPG Candy Apple Red hue.

The car is scheduled to make several appearances, including Barrett-Jackson's Las Vegas auction and SEMA before going up for auction at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction in January, with the proceeds from the sale to benefit St. Jude Children's Hospital.
