If you hadn't watched a single grand prix yet this season, hadn't read any F1-related news or even glanced at a headline, and hadn't spoken to a single racing fan for the past couple of months, you'd likely be shocked to find out how this season has unfolded so far, with the back-markers going from checkered pasts to checkered flags over the course of the winter break. But even at the break-neck speeds which modern F1 cars travel, you wouldn't need an elaborate explanation to catch up with the parade. All you'd need would be to look at the expression on the face of this weekend's race winner and you'd be there. Follow the jump to catch a glimpse.

Gallery: 2009 Bahrain Grand Prix

Continue reading SPOILER ALERT: Spraying the Bubbly at the 2009 Bahrain Grand Prix

SPOILER ALERT: Spraying the Bubbly at the 2009 Bahrain Grand Prix originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 26 Apr 2009 16:23:00 EST. But if you're planning on catching the taped rerun or have the race TiVo'd, go no further. For everyone else, though, read on to find out how the tables turned for the leading F1 teams on the shores of the Persian Gulf.

Everyone who speculated that, after two dismal races at the start of the season, Felipe Massa might have lost his edge, were firmly put in their place as the Ferrari driver pulled out a spectacular performance to dominate the race virtually from start to finish. His team mate Kimi Raikkonen battled it out with the likes of countryman Heikki Kovalainen (McLaren) and Robert Kubica (BMW) to cross the finish line in second place, giving Raikkonen the lead in the drivers' championship with 19 points. The 1-2 finish for the Italian team, however, was not enough to catapult Ferrari into the lead in the constructors' championship, which is now topped by the BMW Sauber team who had a spectacular day under the Middle Eastern sun. Kubica took the first pole position for the team on Saturday in qualifying, emerging on the final step of the podium by the race's end. His team-mate Nick Heidfeld came in an impressive fourth place, ahead of Kovalainen's McLaren-Mercedes. But while BMW finally showed that it is a serious contender, things did not go so well for McLaren, the British team that came to Bahrain in the lead for both titles. Wunderkind Lewis Hamilton had qualified in 3rd place, only to drop a crushing seven positions at the start of the race before hitting former team-mate Fernando Alonso. Hamilton finally crossed the finish line in a shocking 13th place, a full lap after the Ferraris and behind even Force India's Giancarlo Fisichella.

Despite Bernie Ecclestone's initial support of his colleague Max Mosley, Ecclestone is now publicly urging the embattled FIA president to cancel his planned trip to Bahrain to oversee the grand prix there this coming weekend.

The humiliation which Mosley apparently pursued in a disturbing sexual escapade involving multiple prostitutes in a sado-masochistic nazi-themed orgy was outdone only by the embarrassment which resulted from the public revelation of the episode in the British tabloids. Following the news breaking, Mosley declared he would proceed as normal as if nothing had happened, but Ecclestone says his colleague should think again. Citing public opinion and predicting that the royal family in Bahrain "wouldn't like it" if he came to their country, Bernie expressed concern that the news at the event would be dominated (pardon the expression) by Mosley's scandal instead of remaining focused on the race itself. Mosley's "business as usual" approach may require some further thought, to say the least. Thanks for the tip, Schwag of Tulsa!

Two Ferraris and two McLarens, side-by-side, but which McLaren was up front was a surprise. Felipe Massa took his fifth career pole position, with McLaren's young superstar-in-the-making, Lewis Hamilton, swapping with teammate Fernando Alonso and taking second. Kimi Raikkonen grabbed third so the Ferraris would again line up behind each other on the grid, while Hamilton's teammate and reigning F1 champion Fernando Alonso was behind him, alongside Kimi. That was the highest qualifying spot for Hamilton so far and this youngster seems destined for a pole.

Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica made the third row an all BMW Sauber affair. Still early in the season, they seem like the team most likely to pressure the top two teams this year. Things so far have been dominated by McLaren and Ferrari, but BMW and even Renault, seem like they are right there. Giancarlo Fisichella managed to get his Renault into seventh ahead of Mark Webber (Red Bull), with Jarno Trulli (Toyota), and Nico Rosberg (Williams) rounding out the top ten.

The stage was set. Would Massa hold on or would the more seasoned drivers behind him force him into an error and sweep past? Would Hamilton move up another step on the podium to become the youngest-ever British winner of a Grand Prix? Ferrari and McLaren, head-to-head, with a strong BMW Sauber duo ready to pounce if any of the front four got too aggressive and bungled the start. Follow the jump to see how it went.

Continue reading Spoiler Alert: F1 2007 Bahrain Grand Prix

Spoiler Alert: F1 2007 Bahrain Grand Prix originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 16 Apr 2007 08:37:00 EST.
