We enjoy highlighting artists who turn their brushes, lenses or whatever medium they fancy towards the four-wheeled things in life. San Francisco-based artist Sabrina Chun has done just that with her series called Blackprints: Car Designs Reimagined, which is currently enjoying an overabundance of funding on Kickstarter.

In the series, Chun has taken eight iconic autos and created inverse black-and-white profile views of each. The cars include the Porsche 911, '67 Mustang GT500, Shelby Cobra, Lamborghini Countach, Volkswagen Microbus, Ford Model T and pop culture icons like the Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters and the DeLorean from Back to the Future.

The prints will be available in two sizes, mini (6x9 inches) and jumbo (24x38 inches), and they're printed on 80-pound card stock made of recycled paper using environmentally friendly soybean-based ink and solvent. What's more, this is some very reasonably priced art; a pledge of just $34 or more will get you all eight mini prints, while a pledge of $139 or more scores you all eight jumbos.

If you'll indulge us donning our art critic hats for a moment, what we like about Chun's Blackprints is not only the fact that she's chosen eight excellent cars to feature, but the works will hang equally well on the wall of a garage or living room. They seem so simple, but you'll soon lose track of time staring at features you've never noticed before that only reveal themselves in the light of Chun's negative spaces.

TIme Machine Restoration Delorean DMC-12 - front three-quarter view - video screencap

Fans of the Back to the Future trilogy will be pleased to learn that Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown's modified 1981 DeLorean DMC-12, better known as a time machine, is on display at Universal Studios Hollywood in California after a painstaking museum-quality restoration over the past year. While Universal used a handful of cars during filming from 1985 to 1990, this particular vehicle is referred to as the "Hero A" car, as it was the only Delorean featured in all three films.

The Time Machine Restoration Team was tasked with bringing the car back to its original state during its first appearance in Back to the Future, complete with its plutonium-powered flux capacitor (later versions were modified to develop power for time travel from lightning and garbage). From what we can tell, the team's work appears flawless.

While we are still waiting for the official announcement from Universal regarding the project, the team has put up a slick teaser video that you can watch below and has posted a bunch of pictures on its Facebook page. Enthusiast of the films or not, both are worthy of a closer look.

Lego Back to the Future DeLorean Time Machine

You mean to tell me you created a time machine... out of Lego bricks?

So, we may have taken a bit of poetic license with that line, but still - as a group of automotive-obsessed children of the '80s, there could hardly be a better toy with which to relive our childhoods than a Lego Back to the Future DeLorean Time Machine. Pay special attention to the mini Marty and Doc Brown figures, which include costumes from all three movies, a skateboard, hoverboard and life preserver red vest.

The BTTF kit, originally submitted at the Lego Cuusoo user-submitted design site, passed through a lengthy review process by Lego before being approved for production. One of the designers, Masashi Togami, is a part-time contractor for the Lego Cuuso site and will donate his one-percent royalty to a worthy cause: the Michael J. Fox foundation for Parkinson's Research.

Pricing and the date of availability aren't yet available, but a video detailing the Cuuso review process and the DeLorean time machine can be seen below.

Since first hearing about the restoration project to bring the Back to the Future DeLorean DMC-12 time machine back to life, we haven't heard that much about the progress. The project was supposed to be "concluded" over the summer, but it turns out finding original parts or creating all new ones for a fictional time machine isn't as easy as it sounds... actually, it doesn't even sound that easy.

As an update for the museum-quality restoration being given to the neglected "A car" from the original BTTF movie, Bob Gale, co-writer and producer of the movie trilogy, shows us some of the painstaking work that goes into bringing such an iconic movie car back to life.

Joe Walser and Terry Matalas have led the restoration team, which has completely disassembled Doc Brown's DeLorean, and are working to rebuild the car from the ground up. This includes redoing the interior, all of the electronics (with the critical flux capacitor) and even the car's signature stainless steel body parts. One of the remade pieces includes the metal receptacle in which plutonium was placed to get the required 1.21 "jiggawatts" of power to make time travel possible; this was the original time machine, so no Mr. Fusion here.

Like the first BTTF move, this story is "to be... continued," but Gale says that the project is now expected to be completed next month, and it will be on permanent display inside Universal Studios Hollywood.

This is Cooper. Cooper has awesome parents. Cooper's parents made his stroller/push-car into the time-traveling DeLorean from Back to the Future. Yes, we are very jealous of this tot.

According to his mother Cory, who published pics of her son's awesome costume and matching car on Flickr, the inspiration was from a vest. From the gallery's description: "It all started with a red puffy vest Cooper already had and a side comment from my husband about Marty McFly in late September. I've always loved Back to the Future, and love cars since I was little and grew up going to car shows with my Dad"

The process started with a $25 Step2 push car. From there, Cory spent several weekends and weeknights throughout October creating a DeLorean out of cardboard, tape and paint. The final step was the application of electroluminescent wiring by Cory's husband, Jeremy, to create the DeLorean from Back to the Future: Part II (note the hover wheels and "Mr. Fusion").

He may be too young now to fully appreciate the unrivaled incredibleness of this Halloween costume, but hopefully Cooper will look back with fondness one day on the effort taken by his parents to build this terrific tribute to BTTF.

Grand Theft Auto IV Back to the Future Mod

There are an abundance of modifications available for the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV, but few are excellent as the example found in the video below. A fan of both the car-thieving game series and the Back to the Future movie franchise managed to bring his two loves together by crafting a Marty McFly skin for game's Niko character. That's hardly impressive, but whipping up an accurate recreation of Doc Brown's time-travelling DeLorean DMC-12 in the game is something else entirely. YouTube user seedyrom34 has developed a detailed vehicle skin complete with an interior with a working flux capacitor.

That's not all, either. The car features a working keypad for punching in dates and times. When the car has plutonium and the time circuits are active, the player can "time travel" on command, laying down two streaks of fire and jumping into the future or past in the process. Please excuse our geekgasm.

The mantra of the builder of this R/C DeLorean replica from Back to the Future is: "куда мы идем, нам не нужны дороги." According to Google Translate, that's Russian for, "Where we're going, we don't need roads." Appropriate, eh?

With a painted foamcore body and blue LEDs, this Mr. Fusion-equipped DMC-12 sits on a quadrotor platform and is powered by a distinctly non-nuclear lithium-polymer battery juicing four motors, a speed controller and stabilizer. Back to the Future Delorean DMC-12 A Car

Back to the Future Delorean DMC-12 A Car restoredWe've seen plenty of Back to the Future DeLorean DMC-12 replicas pass through the halls of the internet. In that time, we've always assumed the original movie car was tucked away safely in a museum somewhere. As it turns out, that wasn't the case. Of all the vehicles created for the three films, the most detailed hero car, otherwise known as the A Car, was left on display outside. The ensuing years of suffering in the elements weren't kind to the DMC-12, and Bob Gale, co-writer for the BTTF saga, is now working to have the vehicle completely restored to its original condition.

Joe Walser, J Ryan and Terry Matalas are currently working to get the car back to its former glory, but the project needs help. The craftsmen may not need roads where they're going, but they do need anyone with photos of the original A Car or parts from any of the movie DeLorean models to reach out via TimeMachineRestoration@gmail.com or the restoration's Facebook page. Very cool.

Steve McQueen's Le Mans driving suit

Two bits of automotive movie history at a Profiles in History auction held earlier this month have drawn massive bids from collectors. As you may recall, Steve McQueen's racing suit costume from Le Mans was poised to go under the gavel with the auction house estimating the Gulf Oil suit would fetch between $200,000 and $300,000. Hemmings says that by the time the last bid came in, the suit had fetched a staggering $984,000, thereby proving that when it comes to celebrity auctions, few names can draw dollar bills quite like McQueen. The actor's Porsche 911, which he drove in the film, recently sold for $1.25 million.

McQueen's Le Mans suit wasn't the only big draw, however. The same auction also saw a DeLorean DMC-12 used in the filming of Back to the Future III pull sizable bids of its own. The flux-capacitor-equipped gullwing met the auction house's estimates with a towering final bid of $541,200. Great Scot, indeed.

Back to the Future III DeLorean DMC-12

There are reported to be just three surviving Back to the Future Delorean DMC-12 movie cars left in existence, and only one of those is held in a private collection. Next month, you'll have a chance to take it home. One of the stainless-steel wonders used in Back to the Future III is headed to the Profiles in History auction block. The Icons of Hollywood auction will feature a litany of items from the trilogy, including the vest worn by Michael J. Fox's character Marty McFly and a remote-control hoverboard. This has the makings of the best Halloween costume ever.

According to the auction house, the DMC-12 was used in 1955 drive-in move scene where Marty heads off into the Old West. The vehicle was built specifically for off-road use, though the auction doesn't specify exactly what sort of modifications were made to the gullwing machine to handle bouncing through the desert sand. The auction house expects the vehicle to roll away with a winning bid between $400,000 and $600,000. Hit the jump for the full press release.

DeLorean Electric

Given the car's iconic classic/futuristic status, it's no surprise that the DeLorean DMC-12 is a popular car for DIY electric car conversions. That an honest-to-goodness official DeLorean EV is coming from Humble, Texas' reborn DeLorean Motor Company itself, though? That we did not see coming. It makes sense, though. If you're gonna build a time machine electric car, why not do it with some style?

Announced Friday night at the DMC Texas Open House, DMC said it plans to work with electric car startup Epic EV to get an all-electric DMC-12 into production by 2013. Epic is the company started by Aptera co-founder Chris Anthony that is working on the Torq and Amp vehicles (and some rather clever videos). Early reports say the Electric DeLorean will have a maximum speed of 125 miles per hour and offer 260 horsepower for something like $90,000-100,000. The gullwing doors should remain, but we're not sure where the motor will go (the original DeLorean used a rear-mounted engine), let alone the battery pack. This isn't the first time a DeLorean with an alternative powertrain has been talked about. Before his death in 2005, John DeLorean hinted that a hydraulic hybrid drivetrain might find a home in a relaunched DMC-12. That never happened, of course.

Specific technical details on the upcoming DeLorean Electric are sparse, but we're pretty sure it will be able to recharge its 1.21 gigawatt-hour battery instantly when connected to the right power source. You know, until the inevitable Mr. Fusion model gets the green light.

Christopher Lloyd Back to the Future Delorean Garbarino ad

The DeLorean used in the Back to the Future movie trilogy may be the single most memorable movie vehicle for anyone who grew up in the 1980s (as did the vast majority of the staff here at Autoblog). And so, whenever we hear anything having to do with the car, the movie or its main characters, we sit up and take notice.

No surprise, then, that a company may want to make use of all that nostalgia to market itself - apparently, even one based in Argentina that we'd never heard of called Garbarino. The superstore apparently has all manner of high-end gadgetry, and it's hocked the skills of one Christopher Lloyd - forever known to BTTF fans as Doctor Emmet L. Brown - to help sell them.

You may remember a couple of videos that were floating 'round these parts a little while ago featuring Doc Brown and his time-traveling gullwing. It seems those were viral teasers intended to drum up some nostalgic interest ahead of the real deal.

We'll get this out of the way right off the bat... these are just commercials for an Argentinian electronics store and aren't going to set your BTTF-filled world on fire. Regardless, it's good clean fun, and it gives us yet another reason to ogle over a certain nuclear-powered DeLorean and its flux capacitor (which is what makes time travel possible...). Doc Brown

It's been 26 years since Christopher Lloyd donned a lab coat and portrayed lunatic genius Doc Brown in the Back to the Future franchise. This year, though, Lloyd jumped back into the lab coat to revisit his role in an Argentinian TV commercial.

The commercial shills for an electronics store, and proudly feature both Doc and his DeLorean DMC-12. Even cooler, the DeLorean used for close-ups in the commercial is one of the actual originals used in the filming of the movie. Look closely, though, and you'll see that the machine used for the stunts is actually an old and heavily disguised Toyota Celica... apparently, nobody was in the least bit interested in damaging such an iconic movie prop.

No matter how happy our childhoods were, most of us have ended up with at least a few regrets that stick out in our mind. For whatever reason, random happenings tend to stick out as pivotal events in our life's chronology. Swinging at that ninth inning pitch in the dirt in little league. Not having the nerve to ask Suzy Creamcheese to prom. Being the last to the party with the Flock of Seagulls haircut. Sometimes, things that shouldn't be significant at all become just that - lodging in our cranial craws like grains of sand in an oyster. All of which explains how I came to find myself sheepishly appealing to the Mercedes-Benz PR team for an SLS AMG to drive to the 25th Anniversary showing of Back to the Future.

Allow me to explain.

We internet types don't always condone the idea of waking up at the crack of dawn on Black Friday for some mad-dash holiday shopping, but if there was ever a product we'd wait in line for, this might just be it. Starting this Friday, November 26, Nike will be selling its brand-new Dunk 6.0 DeLorean shoe, modeled after what is perhaps the most iconic movie car of all time, the DMC-12 from Back to the Future.

Our favorite stainless-steel sports car has been reinterpreted in the form of this seriously sweet pair of kicks, featuring a matte silver, no-sew constructed upper body. The shoe's sole mimics the DMC-12's 80's-tastic taillights, and there's even a Belfast stamp on the tongue, giving a hat tip to the Irish factory where John Z's machines were originally produced. It even comes in a gullwing-inspired box.

No official details have been released as to how many pairs of these special shoes will be produced or what they will cost, though a few online sources have cited that 1,000 pairs will be available worldwide. Knowing our luck, these hot kicks will surely sell out faster than you can shout, "Eighty-eight miles an hour!"

Back to the Future fans recreate the Libyan chase scene - Click above to watch video after the jump

The Puente Hills Mall sits on an unassuming piece of blacktop in City of Industry, California. If you drove by it, you wouldn't give it a second glance... unless you are a keen-eyed fan of Back to the Future. Called the Twin Pines Mall, and later the Lone Pine Mall, it served as the location where Doc met Marty to have him film his newest invention. It's now the 25th anniversary of that film, and fans are gathering for a week-long celebration of their favorite movie.

Someone brought their BTTF DeLorean replica to one of the events being held at the Puente Hills Mall and, with video cameras rolling, recreated the scene where Doc gets shot by the Libyans. Showing up in their VW Bus, they gun down Doc and chase after Marty as he speeds away into the past. Check it out in the video after the jump.

Translogic takes a look at the DMC 12 - Click above to watch video after the jump

The crew from Translogic had a chance to spend some time with one of the most iconic cars of the '80's - the DeLorean DMC-12. Co-host Bradley Hasemeyer took the time to look into the cars over three episodes by stopping into the DMC of California shop to see how the cars are continuing to survive, what owners are doing to update the machines and what's on the horizon for the stainless gullwing. While the DeLorean originally hit the scene with a lowly 130 horsepower, the company has managed to squeeze nearly 200 ponies from the 2.8-liter V6 with some creative engine work.

You can even have a DMC-12 built nearly brand-new for you right now if you have the cash. The company strips a donor car down to its individual pieces, swaps the standard steel frame for a stainless bits and goes from there. Hasemeyer doesn't say exactly how much that will set you back, but we can imagine it's not cheap, especially for a car that would get the run around by your run of the mill Honda Accord. If you squint your eyes a bit, and possibly drink a very large amount of tequila, your eyes might find a slight (read: extremely remote) resemblance to the DMC DeLorean in the old 1980s-vintage Dodge Daytona -- minus, of course, the Delorean's trademark gullwing doors. Plus, it seems as if every other '80s Daytona is finished in a shade of light silver that could be mistaken at first glance for an unfinished stainless steel skin. Sort of.

It makes sense, then (okay, not really) that at least one enterprising person with a suitably-warped sense of vision saw fit to build his very own Mr. Fusion-powered Dodge Daytona Time Machine, and we give him solid marks for effort. Except. perhaps, for not wiping the dust off his camera lens (see what we mean around the 1:00 minute mark) before shooting the video.

If you're like us, you're probably wondering why someone would go to the trouble of recreating a BTTF Time Machine using a Dodge Daytona? We'll let the builder explain:
Being an adult, I have realized that without winning the lottery or inventing the latest, greatest thing, I am never gonna have the money to buy a Delorean. Well, I could probally get the money together, but I am pretty sure my wife will not let me spend it on a 28 year old car... but I sure as hell can afford an old 1980's Dodge Daytona!

Volkswagen Polo Commercial - click above image to watch the video

A few months ago, we found ourselves aimlessly and fortuitously wandering around the nether regions of a Los Angeles based press fleet's deep storage unit. Total "no cameras" zone. We stumbled in deeper and deeper, past the A8s used for Transporter 3, past the bright pink Mattel Barbie VW Routan and matching pink Barbie New Beetle Convertible with a motorized make-up valise that emerges from the trunk. Suddenly, lo and behold, there's a red 2009 Volkswagen Polo in all its Euro-only glory. Can we drive it? No. Please? No. Come on, man - just a quick drive? No, also - no.

So why is a Volkswagen Polo socked away in the very back of a warehouse? For a commercial, man. And it's actually a pretty nifty commercial, reminiscent of the town square scenes in Back to the Future. They even use the same Universal Studios back lot to film the new Polo spot. However, instead Marty McFly leading Biff and the baddies into the back of a manure truck, the commercial transitions to a Grease-like drag race between the Polo and some sort of chopped '50s zeitgeist flame job convertible - we'll go with custom Buick Roadmaster (or... 1953 Packard). Anyhow, we're not going to spoil the ending, beyond letting you know that the Polo wins. Make the jump to watch the video. UPDATE: ha ha ha.

Toyota Tacoma Truck concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

Today, we hearken back to the days when Toyota's trucks were simply called, uh... Toyota Trucks. Suddenly, its 1985 all over again. We may be getting somewhat tired of the constant retro influences invading today's automotive marketplace, but we'll gladly give the Japanese automaker a pass if it finds a way to put the Tacoma Truck Concept - better known to many as the Back to the Future Truck - from last year's SEMA Show into production.

We'd take the BTTF Truck exactly as it sits in concept form, complete with the cream pearl exterior with retro black graphics. Inside, the multi-toned brown and beige surfaces are period perfect, though it may be tough finding an adequate supply of 20 year-old Recaro fabric. Stick with the solid front and rear axles along with the standard four-wheel drive too, but we'd prefer to see a slightly more powerful powerplant up front (diesel anyone?) than the stock 159-horsepower 2.7-liter.

As far as driving impressions go, PickupTrucks.com managed to snag some seat time in the not-so-futuristic truck, finding that it handles dirt roads with aplomb. Toyota admits that this particular concept was assembled a bit too hastily to tackle the real tough stuff, but the hardware is all there to make for a real-life off-road rambler with a few more weekends worth of wrench spinning. So, could it ever enter production? Normally, we'd say there's a snowball's chance in... the Sahara. But, you know, never say never.
