The 2012 Toyota Aygo is here with better looks, better fuel economy and emissions and better equipment. It's the supermini's first serious overhaul since it was introduced in 2005, and it borrows some of its aesthetic chops from the recently unveiled 2012 Yaris. A bulldog-y stance is emphasized with a jutting lower front bumper with a wide trapezoidal opening, while the lines above have been slenderized.

The carryover 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine has been tweaked for efficiency; its 67 horsepower and 69 pound-feet of torque remain the same, but rowing the five-speed manual will now get you 65.7 Imperial (54.7 U.S.) miles per gallon combined. You'll also hear less of it and the transmission due to increased sound deadening.

Trim options will include new hubcaps, seven exterior hues, a new unified finish on the instrument panel, and a new steering wheel backed by paddle shifters. It might look like just another tiny Eurocar, but the previous Aygo still earned the title of The previous Stig's favorite car, and that's a recommendation not to be trifled with. Pricing and other details will follow closer to its on-sale date, for now, there's a press release after the jump with more info.
Continue reading Toyota l'eggos updated Aygo

Toyota l'eggos updated Aygo originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Jan 2012 10:29:00 EST. Ferrari, McLaren... even newcomer Caparo has joined the frey. But this has to be the farthest contender off the mark, if not the most worthy of the name "pretender" at least.

Our friends at The Hollywood Extra have a spy shot and an artist's rendering of a clone, of all things, wearing the F1 nameplate. The car, which appears to be a carbon copy of Toyota's cut-price Aygo, is made by Byd, one of the many Chinese automakers turning out carbon-copy clones of mainstream vehicles already on the market elsewhere in the world. The shocker: it's purported to have a list price equivalent to $3,500 in Chinese Yuan. That's right, the price of this car is probably less than a single tire on an actual F1 car.

They already have the Yaris taking care of the B-segment market, why on earth would they want to import something even smaller? One word: SMART.

According to Inside Line's sources, Toyota may bring the Aygo, already a popular city-car in Europe, over to the U.S. in two-door form to battle the SMART by DaimlerChrysler. Even though D.C.'s mini-mobile hasn't even hit our shores and proven itself in a viable segment, Toyota may be expecting a blockbuster and doesn't want to be left out in the cold when a possible contender is waiting in the wings.

If Toyota does decide to bring a 'micro' to the States, expect it in 2008, along with the possibility of competition from the usual suspects, Honda, Nissan and Subaru.

[Source: Edmunds' Inside Line]
Toyota Aygo may make it to U.S. originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 20 Sep 2006 08:39:00 EST. The Aygo and its compatriots were driven 10laps (32.5 miles) around Silverstone and none were able to beat thegreen feat of the Aygo and its 1.4L diesel.
While we're just getting used to the idea of the cheap n' cheerful Yaris subcompact Stateside, in other markets,Toyota has an even less expensive offering for sale, the Aygo.

Building on the discount front wheel driver, the quizzically-named Aygo For Sports looks like a cheekyJapanese take on what a lovechild spawned from the loins of a Citroen 2CV and a Meyers Manx might look like. Theroofless concept relies on structural side arches that remind of Citroen's Pluriel, and it does away with the standardAygo's rear seats in favor of teak flooring.

Word is that the drivetrain is bog-stock, meaning that either incorporates Toy's 1.0L VVTi or 1.4Lengines, either of which points to a bit of a chore given the concept's 17" wheels (stock fitmentsare 13"-14").

Still, looks like a harmless bit of fun.
