It's no secret that automotive designers build large clay models of their cars while working out a final design. But let us axe you something: What happens when a design is approved and the car is put into production? Deconstruction. And boy, it sure looks like fun.

Jaguar gave its XF sedan an updated skin for the 2012 model year, and now that the car has been on sale for many months now (we've driven it, in case you forgot), it's time for the sculptors who built the original life-size clay model to take it apart in the most violently awesome way possible. That's right - with axes. Is this the way they do it in England all the time? We have no idea, but it sure seems like a good stress reliever.

We've said it once and we'll say it again: When it comes to pranks, we defer to the infallible wisdom of the prophet Vincent Vega, who once said, "Don't f*** with another man's vehicle." The reasons are innumerable and shouldn't require listing here, but in case you need a refresher, allow us to direct your attention to the video after the jump.

A prank war in Australia escalates in spectacular fashion when one warring party plants an axe in the roof of the other's car. Understandably, this doesn't sit well and prompts the be-axed car's owner to blow his entire life savings on the sweet nectar of revenge.

He enlists the help of four metal fabricators who took over a month to construct a massive 42-foot-tall axe of his own. The Paul Bunyan-style weapon of minor destruction weighs in at over a ton, and as you might guess, has no problem cutting the offending prankster's Holden nearly in two.

Now, this video is awfully well produced to be some spontaneous bit of prank revenge, and the acting is spotty at best, but that doesn't make the video any less entertaining. Hit the jump to check out the carnage for yourself.
Continue reading Why taking an axe to your friend's car is a bad idea

Why taking an axe to your friend's car is a bad idea originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 Jan 2012 19:59:00 EST. Flagging sales and no major new products in the pipeline mean Ford execs are likely to close the book on Mercury for good, and it could happen as early as 2012. Both industry experts and Mercury's own dealers are predicting the brand won't be around much longer. In fact, a recent survey of 125 dealers found that nearly four out of every five dealers were concerned that Ford is planning to dump Mercury.

Sales for Mercury last year totaled 180,848 units in the U.S., less than eight vehicles a month per franchise and the lowest total for the label since 1960. Remember, Chrysler killed the Plymouth brand because its sales dropped to 246,000 units per year and GM said goodbye to Oldsmobile when its annual tally dropped to 289,000 vehicles. So where does that leave Mercury? According to one expert, it leaves Mercury on life support. Of course, we've heard similar reports before, and yet Ford brass continue to pledge support for Mercury with their words. Too bad they refuse to do so with decent products.

[Source: Automotive News - Subs.
