Amelia Island 2013: Lamborghini celebrates its golden anniversary

Lamborghini celebrated its 50th anniversary at the Geneva Motor Show with the introduction of the ultra-limited-production Veneno, but the 2013 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance had an even rarer Lambo on stage. Parked next to the all-new 2013 Aventador Roadster, Lamborghini displayed the world's only Miura Roadster from 1968.

It wouldn't be a Lamborghini display without the Countach, of course, but there were also some of Italian marque's more unique models, including a 1971 Espada, a 1969 Islero and a 1966 350 with its exquisite backward-bent A-pillars. Lamborghini North America COO Michael Lock was also on hand at the show confirming that two of the three Veneno models have been sold to US buyers.

What Dreams May Come

The Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster left me stupefied. Despite my experience with countless other high-powered exotics on a variety of racing circuits, including nearly all of its Gallardo siblings, the all-wheel-drive, 700-horsepower flagship dropped my jaw to the ground.

Less than 24 hours earlier, I had been sitting on an airplane at 39,000 feet studying press releases about the Italian automaker's newest range-topping convertible. While everything looked spectacular on paper, I was genuinely concerned that its new cylinder deactivation system and open-roof configuration would spoil some of the fun - soften its personality, to be more specific.

Yet here I was, approaching 150 miles per hour on a front straight after dropping off the 20-degree banking at Homestead-Miami Speedway, and the Aventador Roadster had extinguished those thoughts like a cold bucket of water on a lit match. The scissor-door supercar was screaming near redline - my heart rate was only a few ticks behind - and I was near speechless.

Lamborghini Aventador Roadster is sold out

Well, that happened quickly. The $441,600 Lamborghini Aventador Roadster is, according to reports, already sold out in every market around the world until at least the middle of 2014.

Boasting a 6.5-liter V12 that churns out a heady 690 horsepower, there's little wondering why the cars are so popular. But with its finicky carbon fiber rooflet, $3,700 gas guzzler tax and and an MSRP that sits considerably higher than the hardtop version's price tag, the Aventador Roadster requires a very specific type of buyer. Lamborghini isn't saying how many of the new dropheads have been sold, but we're told hand raisers won't get their keys until mid-summer at the earliest.

Lamborghini invades Miami with Aventador parade, high-speed runs at airport [w/video]

Lamborghini is only starting to throttle the engines on its 50th anniversary celebrations. The company lined up fifty of its Italian jobs for a cannonball run down the south runway at the Miami International Airport, the Aventador Roadster breaking 200 miles per hour, then ran them all through the streets of Miami to be properly introduced to one of their most ardent clienteles.

Contrary to the appearance of the image above, no airplanes had to wait to taxi behind the ground-based flyers. Not that any of them would have had to wait long, though, since the 700-horsepower Aventador Roadsters were exceeding the lift-off speeds of commercial airliners by at least 30 mph.

Ciao Bella, Lamborghini's Aventador Roadster looks smoking hot in LA

After having all of the official details dropped a few weeks ago, and judging the significance of the price tag just a bit later, we're finally getting our first look at Lamborghini's newest drool-inducer, the Aventador LP700-4 Roadster. News flash: It's just as good-looking in person as it is in stock shots.

That's right, if our fresh gallery of images from the show floor are any indication, buyers with fat-enough bank accounts to put the 700-horsepower V12 Lambo in the garage will not be disappointed with it aesthetically. The sharply creased supercar bodywork looks, arguably, more impressive in topless form than it does as a coupe, which is really saying something.

Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster priced from $441,600 for US

European pricing for the 2013 Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 Roadster was released when the model was officially introduced early this week, but we had to wait a few extra days to see how much customers over here should expect to pay for the topless supercar. Now, Lamborghini has announced that US-bound versions of its new roadster will run $441,600, which doesn't include the $3,700 gas-guzzler tax, meaning the Aventador Roadster will wear a base MSRP of at least $445,300.

As a refresher, this new roadster is a topless version of the 700-horsepower, all-wheel-drive Aventador, and it features a two-piece removable top made of carbon fiber (each weighing in at around 13 pounds) that can be stored in the front trunk. Performance figures include a 0-60 time of under three seconds and a top speed of 217 miles per hour. Lamborghini is currently taking orders for the Aventador Roadster with the car set to go on sale next summer.

Lamborghini Aventador Roadster may debut next week in Miami

The last time we saw pictures of the Lamborghini Aventador Roadster, it was doing some cold-weather testing in Sweden. But from the sounds of it, the official unveiling of the car will take place at a much warmer locale in Miami, Florida. According to TeamSpeed.com, the open-top version of the Aventador will be introduced on November 12.

If this is the case, it definitely makes sense seeing as how popular both convertibles and Lamborghinis are in Miami. Unlike the current softtop convertibles that Lamborghini offers, the Aventador Roadster is expected to have a removable two-peice carbon fiber hardtop.

It isn't clear if the Aventador Roadster's unveiling has anything to do with the South Florida International Auto Show that kicks off this Friday and runs through November 18.

Lamborghini planning four-seat Aventador concept for Geneva?

For Geneva, Lamborghini is rumored to be expanding the seating capacity of its Aventador supercar. UK magazine Car reports the Italian supercar builder is working on a four-seat Aventador GT concept to display next to its Roadster sibling.

The publican says the family-friendlier coupe will get an extended wheelbase, two small rear jump seats not unlike the Porsche 911 and possibly rear "suicide panel" doors. Their story goes on to say the possibility of the four-seat Aventador is unclear, but would be decided based on marketability, not feasibility. Previous reports have indicated that Lamborghini is still working on its Estoque four-door concept despite it not having a green light for production.

As for the long-rumored Aventador Roadster, Car says we should expect a retracting hardtop-style roof instead of the Erector-set-inspired cloth top on the Murciélago - that news would appear to conflict with earlier reports of a removable roof panel.

Lamborghini Aventador Roadster caught keeping it cool

According to our spy photographers, the blurry black missile you see above is none other than the Lamborghini Aventador Roadster out for some cold weather testing in Northern Sweden.

While there's a good bit of camo trying to hide the drop top, look closely and you can see a few more lines on the roof than usual. While we fully expected to see a cloth top akin to the cover on the Murcielago Roadster, this bruiser looks to be wearing a carbon fiber shell up top. At this point, it's unclear whether the top will be stowable on board or whether owners will have to hire someone to drive along behind them with the roof in tow.

Is there anything more magical than a 700-horsepower V12 crammed into a convertible carbon-fiber shell? The answer is no, there isn't. The hardtop version can crank all the way up to 217 mph. It remains to be seen whether or not the roadster version will be able to maintain that lofty mark.

Lamborghini packing a surprise or two up its sleeve for Geneva?

It was quite a while back that Lamborghini promised it would have something new for every major auto show. That seemed quite the claim at the time, particularly for a company with a two-car model lineup, but with a few exceptions here and there, the Italian automaker has been keeping pace famously. So what has Sant'Agata Bolognese got in store for us for the upcoming Geneva Motor Show? A surprise - or two - from what we hear.

All indications are that the Aventador Roadster is ready to go. With 700 horsepower and no roof, that would be more than enough to garner its fair share of attention and then some. But that's not all.

According to the trusty old rumormill, Lamborghini has got something else in store for Geneva. Just what it is, we don't know. It could be the final production version of the Sesto Elemento, which likely wouldn't be very different from the concept version we've already seen. It could be, as is usually the case, another special edition Gallardo. But it could be a proper new debut.

If it is, we could be looking at the new third model - be it a sedan or a crossover - or maybe the Gallardo's replacement. We'll have to wait and see just what Lamborghini has in store, but if Stephan Winkelmann and company plan on sticking to the formula, they could opt to show the Aventador Roadster at another show and keep the spotlight on whatever surprise they're allegedly working on.

What's the only thing better than a 700-horsepower super-coupe? Why, a 700-horsepower supercar roadster, of course! Since the last two V12 supercars from Lamborghini - the Diablo and Murcielago (not to mention the Reventon) - both spawned open-top derivatives, we knew it would only be a matter of time before the Aventador would follow suit.

Now the word on the street (and by street, we mean the internet chat rooms) is that Lamborghini has got the Aventador Roadster all but completely ready to go, and that it is likely to present the roofless despot at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

We're hearing that the Murcielago Roadster's notoriously useless umbrella roof contraption has been replaced by something more functional, which we can only hope for. One way or another, we'll be finding out soon enough, as the Swiss auto expo is only a few months away.

Lamborghini Aventador Roadster leaked by EPA?

Automakers try to keep upcoming models secret, meting out limited details on their own terms until the vehicle in question makes its debut. But the best laid plans of mice and men, wrote Steinbeck, often go awry. And in many cases, it's government agencies that can be held responsible, whether it's the vice-president leaking information or a patent offices releasing regulatory sketches.

In this case, it appears to be the Environmental Protection Agency and its fueleconomy.gov website, which has apparently let slip the arrival of the 2012 Lamborghini Aventador Roadster. The information in the EPA data sheet is roughly the same as the existing Aventador coupe's, but it's not these sorts of details that count here. After all, how many Lamborghini drivers are really that concerned with fuel economy or carbon emissions?

Now, this should come as no surprise, as we've been expecting the open-air Lambo to arrive at some point, particularly since its predecessors - the Murcielago and Diablo before it - offered convertible models. But this appears to be our first real confirmation.

There's been no shortage of new Italian exotics hitting the streets lately. Recent additions to the stable have included the Pagani Huayra, the Ferrari 458 Italia and the Lamborghini Aventador. But do you notice something missing? That's right: roadsters. Not one among these three are currently available with the wind-in-your-tupée experience, but that should change in due course.

Reports of convertible versions of both the 458 and the Huayra have already surfaced, and now we can begin looking forward to the Aventador Roadster - at least, that's what reports coming in from Italy would have us believe. With little indication of where it's getting the information information, Autoblog.it and its English-language counterpart EuroCarBlog.com are anticipating that the successor to the Murcielago Roadster and the Diablo VT Roadster before it will arrive sometime next year.

Considering that the Aventador is already sold out for the next 18 months, it would probably have to be quite late in 2012. But one way or another, you can bet it's coming at some point.
