Jaws dropped last month in Geneva when Lamborghini took the wraps off the Aventador J. Looking like the bastard love-child of an Aventador coupe and a KTM X-Bow, the Aventador J packed the same 700-horsepower V12 into a visceral roadster body.

The fleeting beauty and startling reality of it, however, is that Lamborghini only made one. It reportedly sold for $2.74 million and went home from the Palexpo with an unnamed collector. So if you missed your opportunity to see it in Switzerland, the closest you may ever get is with the video after the jump.
Continue reading Lamborghini gives us one last glimpse at the one-of-a-kind Aventador J

Lamborghini gives us one last glimpse at the one-of-a-kind Aventador J originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 29 Apr 2012 14:02:00 EST.
This year's Geneva Motor Show served up a scintillating buffet of vehicles, but the Lamborghini Aventador J may very well have been our favorite. With no roof, no windshield and all of the insane running gear of the standard Aventador, the roadster is the embodiment of exotic. But according to Top Gear, the car went from design sketch to reality in record time. Designer Filippo Perini told TG he first sketched up the Aventador J in mid-January after CEO Stephan Winkelmann asked his crew to to come up with something special for Geneva.

Despite the apparent similarities between the Aventador and the new Aventador J, the two models share only a handful of body components, including the front hood, fenders, headlights and rear fenders. Everything else is bespoke just for the concept.

If you like what you see as much as we do and want to take one home, too bad. The world's only Aventador J is already sold to an unnamed collector for the lofty sum of $2.74 million at current conversion rates.
Lamborghini Aventador J Geneva star conceived, built in six weeks originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 13 Mar 2012 17:32:00 EST.
We don't typically lose control of our faculties at the sight of the latest supercar. In most cases, the vehicles are slightly different shades of the same theme: high horsepower, low slung, two seats and a super-exclusive price tag to match.

While the Lamborghini Aventador J certainly fulfills all of those criteria, the roofless wonder also boasts the sort of brash ostentatiousness that's been missing from the upper echelon of automotive engineering recently. The roadster design is so perfectly over the top, we can't help but love it. Lamborghini has crafted a quick montage depicting the vehicle's development, from lowly CAD design to the untold multitude of parts and pieces that go into assembling the final product.

This clip is too brief to satiate our manufacturing geekery, but it's better than nothing. Look below to check out the video for yourself. It may be the closest any of us actually get to glimpsing the 700-horsepower behemoth.
Continue reading Lamborghini takes us through the development of the Aventador J

Lamborghini takes us through the development of the Aventador J originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 09 Mar 2012 12:46:00 EST. The Volkswagen Group is comprised of 11 brands producing 240 vehicles across 49 factories throughout the world. So the best way to show off the range of the VW family is to cram a few thousand journalists and VIPs into a massive makeshift stand to outline the Group's goals, what's in the pipeline and what you'll be able to buy later this year.

To that end, VW pulled out all the stops on the eve of the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, bringing along 10 vehicles from across the range. We'll be delving into the details of each over the next two days of show coverage, but before that happens, you can read all about what we saw tonight from the cheap seats after the break.
Continue reading Volkswagen Group previews its wares on eve of Geneva show

Volkswagen Group previews its wares on eve of Geneva show originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 05 Mar 2012 16:55:00 EST.

The Aventador J adheres to a pretty simple recipe, namely dispense with everything unnecessary to going fast.

Let's cut to the chase here: Yes, it's a real car, and yes, it's for sale. Lamborghini makes that point clear at the end of its press release, and we imagine the furor among the 1% to get that first spot in the queue will be enough to rival the 99% on iPad 3 launch day.

The Aventador J adheres to a pretty simple recipe, namely dispense with everything unnecessary to going fast, like the climate control and nav systems. Lambo has also given the roof and windshield of the Aventador LP700-4 coupe the Sawzall treatment, fitting small wind deflectors instead. The company says it's going for a two-seat sport-bike effect, so it's done some other interesting things to lower the curb weight of the J.

Notable here is the use of a new carbon fiber fabric called "Carbonskin" that Lamborghini claims is soft enough to be used on the seats and interior trim. Carbon fiber is used in more traditional ways throughout the rest of the car - in the bumpers, designed to increase downforce, the front air scoop, complete with winglets, and in the huge rear diffuser.

Powered by the same 700-hp 6.5-liter 12-cylinder as the standard Aventador, the all-wheel-drive J is capable of speeds over 300 kph (186 mph), meaning the driver and passenger had better have their helmets at the ready.
