Great news, midsize sedan buyers! The Italian/American brain trust at the helm of the Pentastar has decided to keep the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger around for another two models years. Previously, past owners Cerberus had signaled its intentions to cull the slow selling duo after the 2010 model year, but according to reports, Fiat says that there weren't really any solid plans to replace the twins and it's not really feasible to pull out of the segment entirely until its own Italian-bred successors are ready.

Perhaps the automaker's new owners can find a way to make the platform a bit more competitive for its final two years in production. Next year's Sebring will see a few minor updates that should at least improve the ugly duckling's appearance, not the least of which is the deletion of the car's awkward ribbed hood. Current projections indicate that a more extensive freshening is in the works for 2011 for the Sebring and possibly a wee bit earlier for the Dodge Avenger, which isn't in quite so dire need of a facelift.
The pair are still relative newcomers to the scene, but the competition has delivered Chrysler's midsizers a sound drubbing both in the press and on the sales charts. The problem is that development costs money, something that's currently hard to come by. Thinking strategically, the unloved and outgunned Chryslers might seek solace by relocating to the Nissan Altima's platform. The Altima is one of the best - and best-selling - vehicles on the market. Put plainly, we would dive on an Altima's keys to avoid driving these Chryslers.

A relationship between Chrysler and Nissan already exists, with plans for Chrysler to port the Ram over for Nissan to rebadge as the next Titan, and a version of the Versa wearing Pentastar badging for the South American market is in the mix, so it's not like the two companies are strangers to each other. If Chrysler decides that it still wants its own platform, a partnership with another company to do the building might still be in the cards. Project D is about finding the most economic way to bring a competitive midsize sedan to market, including shrewd lash-ups.

According to Kicking Tires, Chrysler hopes to have a partner chosen by the end of the first half of 2009, with Nissan already being acknowledged as one of the possibilities.

[Source: Kicking Tires]
Could Chrysler's "Project D" be a Nissan? originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 10 Jan 2009 12:59:00 EST. Chryslerberus is recalling all 181,000 of those vehicles sold during that time to fix an electrical defect that affects unused connectors on the tire pressure monitoring system. Apparently, corrosion can cause a short, and owners could experience their vehicles failing to start, stalling once underway, or some other affectations of the electrical components, including the cruise control. Formal notices are going to be sent out later this month, and dealers have been instructed to locate the problem and seal the affected circuits. Named to head Project D in January of this year, the program is creating new mid-sized cars that would replace the Sebring and Avenger and have actually have a chance against the Camcordimabu.

Chrysler says that there was no conflict, but other outlets have reported that Donoughe clashed with CEO Bob Nardelli and so-called Acting Chief Innovation Officer Peter Arnell. Arnell is an outside marketing consultant who also worked with Nardelli at Home Depot, and apparently came up with the Celine Dion/Pacifica campaign (does anyone remember that?). Project D is tasked with developing Chrysler's next-gen midsize cars and also investigating ways for the automaker to be more competitive. (Not allowing demonstrably inferior product like the current Sebring and Avenger to ever see the light of day would be a great starting point.)

We know Chrysler has the talent to get this right, it's only a matter of how much upheaval it will take to do so. And since the new Sebring and Avenger aren't due until 2010 or 2011, whatever Chrysler comes up with better be awfully good, since most people's experience with them will be via the rental fleet gulag. Mark Chernoby has replaced Donoughe as vice president and chief engineer for Chrysler's future mid-size product team.

[Source: Wall Street Journal via Autoweek]
Chrysler product developer quits after 2 months on the job originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 30 Mar 2008 10:01:00 EST. But unlike the former stalwart for unbridled criticism, the Pontiac Aztek, one of the main gripes has been the deplorable interior Chrysler saw fit to torture its customers with. According to a supplier sourced by Automotive News, a crack team of designers - dubbed "Project D" -- has been assembled to address the ills inside Chrysler's mid-sized sedan.

The team is comprised of senior managers and directors who are returning as contract employees after walking out the door during the recent round of buyouts. We wish them the best of luck and hope, despite Chrysler's current cash crunch, that they can finally offer consumers some of the up-market materials found on the Sebring's closest competitors.

[Source: Automotive News - Sub. The announcement is loaded with flowery prose that name-drops Richard Petty and talks of the Charger nameplate's race heritage (the Intrepid era is conveniently overlooked). That, says Dodge, is why it was a natural decision to campaign the full-time COT as a "Charger." We think it's mostly because the "real car" version of the Avenger is lame. Seriously, we'd take an old Spirit R/T over a new Avenger R/T any day.

Thanks for the tip, John!

[Source: NASCAR]
Sticker Swap: Dodge switches NASCAR COT from Avenger to Charger originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 28 Nov 2007 17:32:00 EST. The recall affects both 2007 and 2008 models, and owners should expect to receive notification next month to replace either the wiring or the motor itself.

[Sources: USA Today, The Truth About Cars, Detroit News]
Chrysler recalling Sebring and Avenger yet again originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 05 Oct 2007 17:02:00 EST.
It isn't just any day when you get to drive dozens of different vehicles that aren't even on sale yet. Chrysler made today just such a day at its Chelsea, MI proving grounds, as the Pentastar rolled out its entire 2008 lineup for automotive journalists to inspect and drive. We were able to drive everything except the 600-hp Viper for 2008 and the new Dodge and Chrysler minivans, which was a bit of a downer, but not nearly enough to spoil an otherwise fun day.

The driving route lined up for us included artificial road hazards, hairpin turns, and a few straightaways that demonstrated just how impressive the 6.1L Hemi SRT engine really is. Other than the aforementioned Viper and minivans, Chrysler left the keys in literally everything else, from the SRT 300C to the Sprinter van and Ram 3500 flat-bed. AutoblogGreen was also on hand to drive Chrysler's new two-mode hybrid system equipped with a Hemi engine in the Aspen SUV, and we'll tell you just how that went as soon as the embargoes are lifted (or as soon as someone else opens the floodgates.)

One of the most popular events of the day was an off-road course where we could see just how capable the Jeep lineup really is. Even the JT concept was on-hand for the rough housing, and the end result was some very dirty metal and a few dinged-up quarter-panels.

We'll be bringing you more posts from this event throughout the day today and tomorrow, but for now you can check out some high-res pics in the gallery below.

While (potential) buyers sniff around The Chrysler Group, DaimlerChrysler is still working to keep the brand in fighting shape for its (potential) future owner, announcing that Dodge will return to Japan after a 5-year absence. Four models have been announced to go on sale through its local subsidiary, DaimlerChrysler Japan Co: the Caliber, Avenger, Charger, and Nitro.

Since 2002, when Dodge shipped its last Viper to Nippon, independent importers have maintained the Chrysler Group flag. Even though fewer than 1,000 Chrysler-brand vehicles were sold in the first quarter of this year, the president of DaimlerChrysler Japan, Hans Tempel, declared "No matter what the outcome of Chrysler is, we will continue making our business more profitable in Japan."

Diesel-powered Jeeps and Dodges are also being considered for the Japanese market, though no sales goals have been quoted.

The one recall is actually three recalls across a variety of models for different issues. The largest affects 328,424 Dodge Durango SUVs produced between 2004 and 2006. There is an integrated circuit in the instrument cluster of these Durangos that could overheat. The second recall affects 149,605 Jeep Liberty SUVs produced between 2006 and 2007. The blower motor on these Liberties could fail, particularly in hot weather. Finally, the third recall affects the brand new 2008 Dodge Avenger sedan. About 10,994 Avengers are being recalled for problems with their door latches. This fairly major recall follows another recall Chrysler announced in late February that involved 51,000 vehicles requiring reprogrammed software for their anti-lock brakes. Unfortunately for Tom LaSorda and crew, these recent recalls are not exactly the best foot the Chrysler Group would like to put forward for potential bidders that are considering purchasing the automaker.
Aw Snap!
If you're a working professional in your mid-30s with an annual income around $60,000, take notice: Dodge will be working hard to entice you to buy a new Avenger. Don't think you'll be safe by turning off the TV, either. The Avenger will be on the internet and in your video games, as well. Dodge is marketing its new Avenger to the 30-something demographic with a series of ads that tout technology and performance. Cup-holders that heat and cool your liquid and a MyGIG sound system with 20 gigabytes of hard drive space will be front and center in the ads. Another spot will highlight Avenger's "Natural Performer" attributes. You'll even see the Avenger in Tom Clancy's "Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter" video game from Ubisoft. We assume the Detroit Free Press means the Avenger will be in G.R.A.W. II actually, since G.R.A.W. has been out on store shelves for some time now.

The Borg will supply the hardware as well as the electronic controls and support for integrating the system with the rest of the platform. BW has a line of products specifically aimed at adapting AWD to front-drive platforms. Known as iTrac, the suite of products is designed to interface with stability and traction control systems. With everything working in concert, the Interactive Torque Management (ITM 3e(C)) system is designed to offer the sure-footed dynamics of an AWD chassis with no fuel economy penalty. At highway speeds, power transfer to the rear wheels is reduced, lowering friction and allowing for better fuel economy.

Whether or not AWD is entirely necessary (a full suite of four snow tires and a prudent driver are often nearly as effective) remains to be seen, but it is popular. With the buying public being sold on AWD as a safety feature, it benefits manufacturers when they can offer it on more of their models, and it's a further benefit when the platform doesn't need much re-engineering for the extra hardware.

UPDATE: PRNewswire has issued a correction stating that the release should not have specified the Chrysler Sebring at all. The news applies only to the Dodge Avenger.

[Source: Borg Warner via prnewswire - Sub Req'd]
BorgWarner gets tapped to provide AWD system for Avenger originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 13 Feb 2007 16:31:00 EST. We're unclear as to where Dave got the info, as the Chrsyler Group has not officially released the Avenger's pricing except for its starting price of $18,220 plus a $675 destination charge, which was announced at the Detroit Auto Show last week. We've contacted the Chrysler Group to try and get confirmation that Dave's info is accurate, but the right person there has yet to get back to us. Regardless, the pricing info provided by Dave is right below. The base SE model is only available with the 173-hp World Engine four-cylinder, while the SXT can be optioned up to the 235-hp V6. The R/T gets the V6 standard, and one can also choose all-wheel drive for an additional two-grand. Thus, a loaded V6 Avenger R/T AWD would top out at about $24,870. You can get a Ford Fusion SE with a 221-hp V6 and AWD for less at $23,885, though a top of the line Fusion SEL AWD starts higher at $25,120.

Avenger SE (base): $18,220

Avenger SXT (mid-range): $19,120

Avenger R/T: $22,870

Avenger R/T AWD: $24,870

Earlier we brought you the images and details on the Avenger, which followed closely along the lines of the pre-production show car unveiled at the Paris show. The range-topping R/T spec shown will be available with either front or all-wheel-drive channeling 235 HP and 232 lb-ft of torque through a six-speed AutoStick transmission.

Check out the image gallery for all the pics from the Avenger's unveiling by clicking here or on any of the images below.

For our comprehensive listing of everything from Detroit, click here.
Detroit Auto Show: Dodge takes the wraps off the Avenger originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 09 Jan 2007 15:39:00 EST. We've already seen the "concept" in Paris, which was more of a lightly veiled production vehicle than a full-on design exercise. And we've already discussed the styling infinitum and decided that pulling cues from the Charger was a smart move, but that rear quarter panel is an utter mess of shapes.

Dodge will offer four different models to consumers on this side of the Atlantic: SE, SXT, R/T and R/T AWD. Yup, that's right, you'll be able to outfit your Avenger with all-wheel-drive.

Power will come courtesy of one of three engines: a base 2.4-liter inline four, a 3.5-liter V6 (mated to a six-speed Auto Stick) or a flex-fuel 2.7-liter V6. The flex fuel engine will produce 189 HP and 191 lb.-ft. of torque, while the hotted up version, sporting the 3.5-liter six will make 235 HP and 232 lb.-ft. of twist. Torque will be electronically limited in first gear to avoid excessive wheel spin and the dreaded torque steer.

The interior accoutrements include a bevy of delightful beverage-centric items, including the Chill Zone storage compartment mounted in the dash and the heated/cooled cup holders that are available in the Avenger's platform sibling, the Sebring. You'll also be able to get the MyGIG entertainment system, rear-seat DVD, and Sirius.

Pricing will start at $18,895, which is about $1,600 less than it's outgoing counterpart.

The full press release is available after the jump and be sure to check out the gallery by clicking here.

Continue reading Detroit Auto Show: 2008 Dodge Avenger

Detroit Auto Show: 2008 Dodge Avenger originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 09 Jan 2007 01:42:00 EST. A few days after shots of a preproduction Dodge Avenger base model hit the web, our good buddy Ray Wert III over at Jalopnik runs across what appears to be an R/T version on a Michigan highway. We stand by our claim that the Avenger looks much better wearing the trimmings of a performance model than it does in the plain duds of a base model. Not much is known about the mechanicals that will be found in the R/T, but for what it's worth, the Sebring, which shares the same platform, employs Chrysler's 3.5-liter V6 producing 235 hp as its top-end powerplant. Whatever powerplant is under the hood of that black Avenger, apparently it wasn't powerful enough to pull away from the all-seeing eye of Wert's camera phone.

[Source: Jalopnik]
Spy Shots: Dodge Avenger R/T originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 13 Dec 2006 19:00:00 EST.
