Employing complex scientific formulas and methodologies probably best described as "Whatever we felt like choosing," Automobile has named its All-Stars for the 2013 model year. The 11 vehicles earned their trophies for being "the best and most significant" offerings to the mag's staff and contributors, and while we were surprised to see a couple of them on the list, none of them were shocking. In no particular order, they are:

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (seen above)

Porsche Boxster

Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S

Audi A7

Ram 1500

Volkswagen GTI

Random notes: The least expensive vehicle on the list was the Ford Focus at $16,995 however, it was the $24,495 Focus ST that was actually driven; the least expensive vehicle as-tested, when such indication was given, was the $28,265 BRZ; the most expensive vehicle as-tested was the $75,615 Porsche Boxster S, hurdling the price of the A7 by nearly $4,000; the greatest disparity between base and as-tested price was the Ram, from the $24,395 skin-and-bones truck to the $54,335 Laramie Longhorn Crew Cab; the GTI was viewed through the history of its birthplace, Wolfsburg.

Automobile Magazine recently spent the better part of three days getting to know 28 of the latest and greatest cars on the market to pick its Automobile of the Year, and today it announced that the 2012 Tesla Model S was given this coveted award. As much as the all-electric Model S means to the automotive world, we'd be surprised if it doesn't snag a lot more hardware in the next few months.

The Model S beat out cars like the 2013 Cadillac ATS, 2013 Ford Fusion, 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S and 2013 BMW M5 with its sleek design, luxurious and tech-filled interior and, of course, its unique electric powertrain that offers both an incredible all-electric range and equally eye-popping performance.

To narrow down the top candidates for the award, Automobile took all the cars out for two days of road testing and then spent another day at Gingerman Raceway in Western Michigan, and the performance aspect of the Model S seemed to surprise and/or impress a lot of the magazine's staff more than anything else. To prove how fast the car is, they did a drag race to 100 miles per hour with the Tesla and the new M5, and the Model S won. The 265-mile driving range and 17-inch touch-screen display won points for the car, too.

Scroll down for a quick video from Automobile that goes into detail why its staff chose the Model S, and shows some great driving shots of the car as well. We've also put together a gallery with the Model S and the nine other cars that made the short list for the award, so be sure to check them out below.
Continue reading Tesla Model S wins Automobile car of the year [w/video]

Tesla Model S wins Automobile car of the year [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 01 Nov 2012 11:29:00 EST.
The new Volkswagen Scirocco is a highly sought-after sport coupe, made even more desirable by the fact that we don't get it here. But is that exclusivity enough to make it more tempting Volkswagen than an original 1987 Scirocco? To help find out, Jason Cammisa of Automobile magazine went to Germany to pit the original Scirocco against the current model that we don't get to play with.

Its interesting to look at the way the two cars stack up on paper. The '87 Scirocco that belongs to Cammisa makes 175 horsepower and 150 pound feet of torque from a 2.0-liter 16-valve inline-four engine. Cammisa's 2.0-liter engine is larger and more powerful than the 1.8-liter found in the original car, but it sure makes this comparison interesting. The 2012 Scirocco utilizes a 1.4-liter turbocharged four pot to make only 160 horsepower but 177 lb-ft. Meanwhile, the wheelbase of the new car is exactly seven inches longer than the OG Scirocco. Oh, and the 2012 model is more than 700 pounds heavier.

Scroll below to see how the two cars stack up - it may be a lot closer than you think. Extra points for anyone who can pick up on the Inglorious Basterds reference. After watching, hit up the comments section and tell us which car you would rather have.
Continue reading Head 2 Head pits new VW Scirocco pitted against last model sold in U.S.

Head 2 Head pits new VW Scirocco pitted against last model sold in U.S. originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 29 Aug 2012 19:28:00 EST.
If you were to compile a list of the greatest sports sedans ever made, what would you put at the very top?

Raise your hand if you said the BMW M3. Now, everybody, put your hands down.

But what if we told you that BMW's standard-bearer was actually created in response to a four-cylinder-powered Mercedes-Benz produced for competition that the factory didn't even want to be a part of? History books tell us that the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 made its first major impact on the world scene when a young Ayrton Senna piloted one to victory at the Nürburgring in a promotional race in 1984.

BMW responded in 1986 with the E30 M3. It boasted more power and less weight, and the two machines did battle in touring and rally racing for the next decade. But which one is a better car?

Automobile Magazine decided to find out. One stock 190E 2.3-16 and one stock M3 (though a later Sport Evo model, making the comparo a bit lopsided) were procured in Germany and driven 'round the 'Ring. We won't spoil the video by telling you which was declared the victor, but we will tell you that host Jason Cammisa purchased one of them and shipped it home.

Ann Arbor, Michigan, is best known for the University of Michigan, punk rock progenitor Iggy Pop, and foodie favorite Zingerman's Delicatessen. We know, you're wondering why you should care. Well, it's also now home to three of the four major monthly car magazines.

Hearst Corporation has announced that Road & Track will be moving from Newport Beach, California, to Ann Arbor over the summer, joining its other automotive title, Car and Driver. Automobile also calls Ann Arbor home, as does R&T's new editor-in-chief, Larry Webster. He will take over for current boss Matt DeLorenzo on June 4.

Webster had been automotive editor at Popular Mechanics since January 2010, and worked for Car and Driver for years before that. He has a mechanical engineering degree from Lehigh University and counts racing and vintage car restoration among his hobbies. Scroll down to read the full press release.
Continue reading Road & Track hits the road, makes tracks to Ann Arbor, Michigan

Road & Track hits the road, makes tracks to Ann Arbor, Michigan originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 31 May 2012 18:00:00 EST. 'Tis the season, boys and girls. Sure, the holidays are around the corner, but with the end of the year in sight, it's time for every magazine and its sister (publication) to choose its favorite car(s) for the year. And the latest to do so is Automobile magazine.

The venerable glossy book has already announced its 2012 Automobile of the Year, the Audi A7, along with its Man of the Year (Kia design chief Peter Schreyer), Technology of the Year (the trifecta of turbocharging, direct injection and variable valve timing) and Design of the Year (Fisker Karma). But now Automobile has revealed its ten favorite cars for the annual All-Star list.

The final list represents an eclectic cross-section of American, European and Asian vehicles - all available in the U.S., naturally - including the:

It seems we at Autoblog are not the only group of enthusiasts who are ready to announce to the whole world their love for the Audi A7. The men and women from Automobile Magazine have named Audi's coupe-like five-door hatchback as their 2012 Automobile of the Year. There's a whole article worth of reasons why the A7 has won the coveted trophy, so if you're interested, we suggest clicking here to read all about it yourself.

In related news, Peter Schreyer, chief design officer for Kia, has garnered the magazine's 2012 Man of the Year award for the contributions he's made to the Korean company's overall design aesthetic. We wholeheartedly support that notion. 2012 Technology of the Year laurels go to the "Turbo Tech Trifecta," that being Automobile-speak for turbocharging, direct injection and variable valve timing. Finally, the 2012 Design of the Year has been awarded to the Fisker Karma. We're betting that last decision will be the most controversial.

Doug the puppet and his handler John trekked to the headquarters of Automobile Magazine in order to show off the 2012 Ford Focus. John and Doug arrive in the office of editor Jean Jennings, and things don't exactly get off on the right foot.

After their initial introductions, Doug and John discuss the 2012 Ford Focus in front of the magazine staff. A boring PowerPoint presentation leads to some track time with the car, and it's all captured in five short videos.

Thanks to one very suspicious-looking press kit from Acura, the city of Ann Arbor, Michigan had a bit of a bomb scare on its hands this afternoon. The Japanese automaker sent a special-edition package to our friends at Automobile magazine in conjunction with the release of Thor. That kit happened to find its way into a recycling bin outside of the publication's Michigan office. A stand-up citizen reported what they thought was a bomb, which resulted in the evacuation of parts of downtown.

A helicopter was reportedly called in to provide an eye in the sky for a few hours as well.

We can't blame the authorities for taking action. The Automobile offices are situated directly across the street from a Federal building, and with the ne'er-do-wells of the world plotting revenge for the termination of the nefarious Osama bin Laden, a little caution is more than warranted.

Former Car and Driver executive editor and veteran automotive journalist Mark Gillies has signed on with the Volkswagen PR machine as product and technology communications manager. Gillies spent 28 years making the rounds among automotive publications, working as an editor at David E. Davis, Jr.'s Automobile Magazine, and churning out copy for England's CAR and Autocar. Gillies also spent time hunting down stories for AutoWeek and Classic & Sportscar.

In his new role at Volkswagen, the former scoop will report to Scott Vazin, the company's newly-hired vice president for public relations formerly from Nissan. As a former journo, Gillies will be shouldered with helping to promote new VW products and technologies.

Gillies' new boss has been working in the automotive PR business for more than 20 years, getting his start at Mitsubishi in 1990. From there, he moved on to a job at Nissan, finishing his time there as general manager of Corporate and Public Communications in Europe.

Vazin starts his new job on April 18, followed by Gillies on May 1.

David E. Davis, Jr., with wife Jeannie and son Matt

Talking about my dad just after the day of his death, I'm sort of forced to quote him. Right up to the last, he was "one tough summbitch" as he would say in praising anyone worth their salt. He saved that Burnside, Kentucky, inner country boy just for such moments as these.

His amazing wife Jeannie Luce Kuhn Davis (one of the great names in the annals of stepmothering) and I drove up to the hospital yesterday before I had to get to the airport to head to New York City, where I am writing this now. Jeannie was in her Chrysler minivan - her favorite for hauling dogs and people, in that order - me in a nice Saab 9-5 sedan. We'd brought the two big Italian Spinone hunting dogs, Tavi (for "Ottavio") and Pucci (for "Puccini"), to the hospital the two previous days so they could give some love to their bedridden master. Jeannie was going to bring them again in the afternoon since my dad and everyone else on the floor got such a kick out of them with their silly bearded faces and warm affection.

In the morning my dad was fine and we had a good last bye-bye, saying we'd see each other really soon again anyway. After all, all post-op tests revealed that he was now completely cured of any cancer and he'd be heading home in maybe five or six days to heal up completely. We were all telling as much to the many well-wishers who phoned the room.
Davis, Jr." src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2011/03/david-e.-davisjr-250.jpg" style="border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; margin: 4px; float: right;" />David E. Davis, Jr. has died at age 80. The longtime Car and Driver editor, Automobile Magazine founder and man with his fingerprints all over this great business of ours passed away unexpectedly after complications from bladder surgery at 5:15pm Eastern on Sunday. A hugely witty man with a talent for honing a magazine's voice and recognizing and refining talent in those around him, Davis stands among the founding fathers of modern automotive journalism.

In recent years, Davis had returned to C/D as a columnist after helping to get pioneering digital auto magazine, Winding Road, off the ground. He has held sway over nearly every great print title in the American auto journalism world at one point or another, including Road & Track and Motor Trend, and earlier in his professional life, he cultivated a distinguished career in the automotive ad business, where he was instrumental in the creation of General Motors' seminal "Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet" campaign, among others.

As an editor, publisher, ad man, racer, mentor and raconteur extraordinaire, Davis leaves an indelible mark on the industry. As a family man, he leaves behind his beloved wife, Jeannie, a daughter and two sons, including our own European Editor, Matt Davis.

Ever eloquent, where others might simply inquire "How are you?", Davis was known for asking colleagues and friends "Is your life a rich tapestry?" Davis' own life was certainly a vibrant and detailed work of art. Everyone in auto world owes this icon a debt of gratitude... and some of us even owe him our careers.
David E. Automobile has compiled a list of the 2011 model year vehicles deserving of all-star recognition. To show off each choice, the buff book has enlisted illustrator Daniel Stolle to turn each vehicle into a child's toy. The list of 2011 Automobile All-Stars features:

BMW 3 Series

As much as we'd like to say that we didn't see this one coming... well, we did. But, despite the fact that it would seem to be the obvious choice to take home the Automobile Magazine Automobile of the Year award, the voting crew claims that it "wasn't a shoo-in."

In fact, claims Automobile, "the Chevrolet Volt endured more scrutiny and skepticism than any of the nine other semifinalists." We don't doubt it, either. There's no denying that the Volt has and will continue to receive more close scrutiny than just about any other vehicle that will be introduced this year or any other, and the voters are well aware of this fact. In other words, if the Volt wins a bunch of awards and turns into a major flop, the award-givers will have plenty of explaining to do....

Fortunately, it seems that the Chevy Volt is mostly worthy of the admiration it is receiving from the automotive press (the Volt was also named the 2011 Motor Trend Car of the Year). Automobile Magazine calls the Volt a "game changer," and, with its innovative powertrain that should allow a large number of owners to drive almost completely without the use of gasoline, it's hard to argue with that assessment.

Click past the break for a video of Automobile's Editor-in-Chief, Jean Jennings, explain why the Chevy Volt is a worthy recipient of its Automobile of the Year award. Have you prepared your Car of the Year bingo board? The end of 2010 is upon us and this means two things: 1) We are a step closer to fulfilling the Mayan's end of the world prophecy, and 2) Automotive publications, both in print and online, are beginning to share their "Best of" vehicle picks.

Automobile Magazine has just announced finalists for its own 2011 Automobile of the Year award. Grab your markers, check your cards and see if you have any of the following vehicles in play:

Audi A8

BMW 5 Series

Buick Regal

Cadillac CTS-V Coupe/Wagon

Chevrolet Volt

Ford Fiesta

Hyundai Sonata

Jaguar XJ

Jeep Grand Cherokee

Nissan Leaf

Taking a page from Motor Trend, Automobile will be announcing its winner by means of its Facebook page. The lucky vehicle will be announced November 16th at noon EST, but in the meantime, you can read why each vehicle made the cut in the press release after the jump.

Remember the Mini Mission Control in the special edition Camden - the one that was obscenely annoying? There are something like 1,300 audio phrases within Mission Control, and Mini gives owners the audio files on an SD card. That means you can record your own phrases in new voices... or use voices that are already out there... like K.I.T.T.'s.

Automobile swapped the three limey characters for that of the Knight Industries Two Thousand, so taking the car out of Sport mode gets the warning, "Don't touch turbo boost. Something tells me you should touch turbo boost." That's more like it. For the rest of the Frankenstein results, check out the video after the jump.

Car and Driver 1972 Pinto race car - click for high-res image gallery

Time was, automotive magazines used to do stuff that was awesome. This IMSA Pinto is evidence of that. Car and Driver built this car in 1974 to illustrate that racing on a big scale for a modest budget was possible. The car grabbed the pole position in half the races it entered that season and won outright at its second race at Charlotte. Surely more powerful than the emissions- and oil-crisis choked street Pintos of the day, this race car is better suited to road courses than hugging the wall at Talladega, but it's likely loads of fun either way.

The car had been sold off by Car and Driver back in 1974, and was subsequently restored by Don Sherman, now of Automobile Magazine, but a C/D alum, in 2005. Sherman had his nostalgic fun with the car before selling it to Fox Motorsports. Fox has added some more beans to the Pinto's powerplant, and now has it up for sale on eBay Motors. You've got seven days to scrape some dough together and go vintage racing in the car that started Pat Bedard's respectable - if short - racing career.

When Automobile magazine put together a list of potential all-star cars, 39 new models made the initial cut from the Audi A3 and (Euro-edition) Honda Civic to the Ferrari 599GTB Fiorano and Tesla Roadster. From that selection, only ten cars ascended to the winner's circle.

Each of the 39 finalists makes a solid case for being included, although a few did raise an eyebrow -- we really enjoy the Malibu and love the G-Class, for instance, but didn't expect to see them here. The ten that took honors are all worthy to a wheel, but again, an eyebrow or two did take note -- neither the aforementioned Ferrari nor the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG made it, but the Camaro and BMW Z4 did.

Don't let that take anything away though; these things are subjective, and every winner deserved it. Even the Dodge Ram 1500. Click here for the full list of winners and reasons.

2010 Volkswagen GTI - Click above for high-res image gallery

It's funny how publications have a personality. It shouldn't be funny, as obviously all publications have an editor and said editor has a collection of likes and dislikes, but we still find it amusing. Here's a for instance. This year, our pals over at Motor Trend went ahead and named the Subaru Outback their Sport Utility Vehicle of the Year. Besides the obvious issue (a jacked up station wagon counts as an SUV?), this selection makes perfect sense considering that in 2008, the Subaru Forester won the same award. Funny, huh?

Therefore, it should surprise no one that Automobile has named the 2010 Volkswagen GTI their Automobile of the Year. Why? Because they did the same thing back in 2007. Really? Yeah, man... really. Only this time, we're not sure how ha ha funny we find this selection. It's more funny odd. For one thing, the 2010 GTI really isn't all that different than the 2007 GTI. Same powerplant, same suspension, same hard points. All that's really new are some body panels and an electronic differential, the latter of which is suspect during sustained, high-speed back country driving.

All that said, the new GTI is a fine car - we said so ourselves a few months back. However, we just don't see it as COTY material. In fact, if we were to select a single car to shower praise down upon... we're not even sure where we'd start. Some of us (ahem) would no doubt push for the Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 because for the money it just can't be beat (or for that matter, for twice the money). Still others would pick... the Ford Fusion Hybrid. So what do we know? Oh wait, two of us are on the Internet Car of the Year jury...

Car magazines do crazy things for money these days. Case in point: Automobile Magazine (and co-testers from sister mag Motor Trend) got roped into an interesting comparison test that you will not be reading in the latest issue. Why? The whole thing lives at 6versus8.com, a domain set up just to host this single comparison test that highlights the result of Lincoln's bet that its V6-powered MKS EcoBoost can beat some of the best naturally aspirated V8-powered sedans from Europe.

The test pits the 2010 Lincoln MKS EcoBoost against the Jaguar XF, Mercedes-Benz E550, BMW 550i and Maserati Quattroporte. As you might imagine, the test has to be un-leveled a bit for the MKS EcoBoost to stand a chance. The challenge is a 3.76-mile hill climb up Colorado's Loveland Pass... at 11,900 feet above sea level. Ah, there it is. The MKS EcoBoost makes the least horsepower and is the second heaviest car in this group, but at these elevations, the twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 will maintain its power level while the naturally aspirated V8 engines gasp for breath.

Pike's Peak champion Rod Millen was hired to drive, the Colorado State Patrol closed off Route 6 in 30-minute intervals for each car's run and a top notch film crew with a helicopter was hired to document the proceedings. Long story short, the grand production produced five videos (you can view them at 6versus8.com or after the jump) in which we see the Lincoln MKS EcoBoost claim second place behind the BMW 550i, though it did nab honors for the highest top speed during the hill climb.

So... back to the original point we were making. It seems to us that this is less editorial than advertorial. Automobile and Motor Trend say they rented the other vehicles for this test because, honestly, would you loan your sedan for a comparison test that was clearly tilted in your opponent's favor? And what did the magazines get in return? From what we can see, two double-page spreads in the current issue of Automobile (and perhaps MT) that we're guessing cost more than enough to cover the price of producing this elaborate "comparison test". And why does it not appear in the magazine itself? Probably because Automobile and Motor Trend don't think it's editorial either.

Follow the jump to watch all five videos for yourself and let us know what you think in the comments.

[Source: 6versus8.com]
Continue reading Lincoln MKS EcoBoost earns second place in 6versus8.com showdown, should we care?

Lincoln MKS EcoBoost earns second place in 6versus8.com showdown, should we care? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 05 Oct 2009 15:58:00 EST.
