Alfa Romeo has proven itself capable of crafting some of the most achingly beautiful automotive works of art on the road today. Unfortunately, their driving dynamics and performance numbers rarely seem to cash the checks written by their sumptuous bodywork. Nowhere is that schism more evident than with the Brera, a fantastically angular design with disappointing dynamics.

That's where aftermarket tuners come in. Over a year ago, Alfa teamed up with Prodrive to create the Brera S. The venerable British house of motorsport tightened up the suspension and steering and yanked out the heavy all-wheel-drive system to bring the sport coupe's drive closer to the aggressive level of its styling. Some evidently felt the result was a good starting point, but that it needed a little more oomph, prompting Autodelta to join the fight with the Brera S 3.2 Compressore.

By bolting a supercharger to the 260-horsepower, 3.2-liter V6 and remapping its ECU, Autodelta - one of the world's foremost Alfa tuners - has coaxed out an impressive 347 stallions. But while removing the all-wheel-drive system helped shave 220 pounds off the Brera's curb weight, the London-based tuning house felt it needed a substitute, so they've fitted a limited-slip differential to handle the extra power. They'll also soften the suspension a touch from Prodrive's hard line at a client's request.

Customers looking for the convenience of a four-door can also get most of the same modifications in the form of the Autodelta J4 3.2 C, based on the 159 sedan. Both models were unveiled in London at MPH09, the live-action auto show where Autodelta exhibits its latest offerings each year. Follow the jump for all the details in the press release and have a stroll through the photos in the high-resolution image gallery below.

Gallery: Autodelta Alfa Romeo Brera S and 159 J4 3.2 Compressore

[Source: Autodelta]
Continue reading Besting Prodrive: Autodelta unveils tuned Alfa Brera S and 159 J4 3.2 Compressore at MPH09

Besting Prodrive: Autodelta unveils tuned Alfa Brera S and 159 J4 3.2 Compressore at MPH09 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 09 Nov 2009 19:20:00 EST.
European reviews of Alfa Romeo's mid-range line-up invariably yield the same conclusion: the Brera, Spider and 159 are impossibly beautiful (take our word for it if you haven't seen one in the flesh), but the performance just isn't there. That's where Autodelta comes in. The British tuning house specializes in dialing up the performance quotient on Alfas, and after pumping up the Brera and Spider with its top-of-the-line J-series packages, Autodelta has turned its attention to the 159 sedan.

The result of a year and a half of development, the 159 J4 2.2 C promises to fill the dynamic void of the standard saloon. Rather than starting with the heavier 3.2-liter V6 (which is coupled to Alfa's Q4 all-wheel-drive system), Autodelta takes the 185hp 2.2-liter JTS direct-injection inline-four and bolts on a Rotrex C30-74 supercharger to boost output by 60 horses up to 245. Autodelta has also replaced the stock plastic intake manifold with a new aluminum one to cope with the extra power and fitted new NGK Iridium IX spark plugs, a new electronic limited slip differential, new springs and dampers, bigger brakes, a quad-tipped stainless exhaust, 19-inch OZ Botticelli HLT rims with custom Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT rubber, and a full aero kit, along with trimming out some unnecessary weight and tinkering with the ECU.

Unlike a Lamborghini or Ferrari, you won't put future generations of your family at risk by purchasing one. Of course, the extreme power of those notable Italian exotics is sacrificed at the altar of affordability. Enter London-based tuner Autodelta, which will be unveiling this 405bhp version of the Alfa GT Coupe at the Spring Italian Car Day in the UK this weekend.

The Autodelta GT 3.7 Super is obviously based on the Alfa GT Coupe. The original 3.2L engine is enlarged to 3.7L and blessed with a small Rotrex centrifugal supercharger that boosts power up to 405bhp and torque to 375 ft-lbs. Motor Authority also reports the car is fitted with a new radiator and oil-cooler, as well as a custom exhaust with quad chrome-tipped tailpipes. Styling remains largely unaffected save for a new front bumper that allows more live-giving air to reach the motor and a set of 19-inch OZ Racing wheels.

Autodelta is bringing a range of cars to the Italian car celebration this weekend that also includes its GT 3.2 Super, the 348bhp supercharged Brera J5 3.2 C, the 147 GTA AM 3.2 Super, 147 GTA AM 3.7 Super and finally, the 146 2.0.

[Source: Autodelta, Motor Authority]

Gallery: Autodelta Alfa GT 3.7 Super

Continue reading Autodelta unveiling Alfa GT 3.7 Super with 405bhp

Autodelta unveiling Alfa GT 3.7 Super with 405bhp originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 04 May 2007 18:24:00 EST.
Few people would argue that the Alfa Romeo Brera, Spider and 159 aren't among the most beautiful cars gracing the road - few people with any taste, anyway. Unfortunately, while the legendary Italian marque has made a huge comeback in the styling department, reviews suggest the driving dynamics, in this range at least, leave a lot of room for improvement.

That's where Autodelta steps in. The British tuning house is the world's expert on Alfa Romeos, and they certainly weren't going to back down from the challenge of improving the performance of this most beautiful of Italian automobiles. Autodelta's latest innovation is a simple reprogramming of the 3.2-liter V6 engine's ECU that yields an extra fourteen horsepower and twenty-three lb.-ft. of torque, boosting the former up to 274 and the latter up to 260. That may not sound like much to those used to tuners strapping on turbos and intercoolers, but Autodelta squeezed out that extra power while improving both delivery and fuel economy. (If you're still looking for superchargers and spoilers, Autodelta's got plenty of that, too: check out the 348-hp Autodelta Brera J5 3.2, hitting the market in less than two weeks.)

Over on this side of the pond, we're anxiously awaiting Alfa Romeo's impending return to the US market. And when the infatuation with the Alfa's beauty wears off and the dynamic flaws begin to show, American buyers will have Autodelta to call.

The Alfa Romeo Brera is quite possibly the most beautiful car on the market, but reviews have lamented the lack of "go" to accompany the "show". Alfa tuners extraordinaire Autodelta have answered the call with the Autodelta Brera J5 3.2 C.

The first Autodelta based on the new generation of Alfas (Brera, Spider, 159), the J5 3.2 C ups the performance ante with modifications to the engine, suspension, exhaust system, upgraded wheels and tires, and improved aerodynamics through revised bumpers front and rear. The "C" designation stands for "Compressore": the supercharger is supplied by Rotrex (who also make the unit for the Koenigsegg CCX). The unique supercharged direct-injection 3.2-liter V6 produces 348 hp (an 88-hp boost over stock), driving through all fours to propel this beauty to sixty in a scant 5.3 seconds.

With Alfa Romeo poised to mount its new attack on the American market, we hope Autodelta makes the trip too.
