Autocar took an Ariel Atom V8, BMW HP4 superbike and X-Games gold medalist Liam Doren's Citroën DS3 rallycross ride to an airstrip for a drag race. Sadly for all the drivers and for us, the clouds took to the sky and poured more and more rain on the track before the big race.

It's still a fun theoretical battle. The 550-kilogram Ariel Atom brings a 3.3-liter V8 with 475 horsepower, 268 pound-feet of torque and a 748-hp-per-ton ratio. The engine-restricted, 1,300-kg DS3 Rallycross rocks a 2.0-liter four-cylinder set for the day to about 560 hp, 600 lb-ft and - because of its variable boost - anywhere from 454-577 hp-per-ton. The HP4, naturally, does the most with the least, its 169 kg hauling a 1.0-liter engine with 163 hp, 83 lb-ft and a screaming 757 hp-per-ton.

It's a shame the weather didn't allow the entrants to show all they could do, especially the two-wheel-drive Atom. Nevertheless, it does demonstrate how critical the amount of available traction is to get the most from high-performance machinery, and there's lots of launch-controlled action and a winner crowned in the video below.
Continue reading Ariel Atom V8 pitted against Citroën DS3 racer and BMW HP4 superbike

Ariel Atom V8 pitted against Citroën DS3 racer and BMW HP4 superbike originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 16 May 2013 16:57:00 EST.
Autocar's Steve Sutcliffe took the 2014 Maserati Quattroporte on a spin along snowy mountain roads to test it for a specific brief: as a limousine for the chauffeured class. It's sporting credentials are impressive: Twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V8, 532 horsepower, 475 pound-feet of torque in casual circumstances that rises to 532 lb-ft in overboost, a 0-to-60 mile-per-hour sprint of 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 191 mph.

However, citing Maserati's desire to not just increase its sales to 50,000-per-annum by 2015, but to sell many more of its cars in China, Sutcliffe wanted to find out if the livery side of the Quattroporte could match its sport sedan side. So after taking the pilot's seat and trying out the sport settings, Sutcliffe hops in back to test out the CEO's seat.

Then he compares the Quattroporte against the long-wheelbase Jaguar XJ with its supercharged V8, a sedan that's 15,000 pounds less expensive than the Maserati. It doesn't take long for him to find that one of them is a clear winner when it comes to transporting VIPs. To find out which one, enjoy the video below.
Continue reading Autocar compares new Maserati Quattroporte to Jaguar XJ

Autocar compares new Maserati Quattroporte to Jaguar XJ originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 07 Jan 2013 17:01:00 EST.
Bring together a 550-horsepower Jaguar XKR-S and a rain-soaked skidpad, and it's almost impossible to not end up in a sideways drift... accidental or on purpose. With that in mind, the gang over at Autocar got a hold of the monstrous XKR-S for the latest installment of "Will it Drift?," only they raised the stakes a little by attempting the feat with a blindfolded driver

We've driven the XKR-S a number of times here at Autoblog (including a First Drive, Review and Quick Spin), so we weren't at all surprised to learn that blind drifting in the car is possible. But what is remarkable is the ease at which it happened. This, of course, can be credited as much to the car as to the driver, Steve Sutcliffe. Check out the impressive video for yourself, which is posted after the jump.
Continue reading Can a Jaguar XKR-S be drifted while blindfolded?

Can a Jaguar XKR-S be drifted while blindfolded? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 27 Dec 2012 18:40:00 EST.
It's been eight years since the Porsche Carrera GT debuted. It feels like an eternity. Manufacturers relish nothing more than exceeding the performance envelope of their old halo models, and with a rash of idiotically fast machines like the McLaren P1, Ferrari F70 and Porsche 918 Spyder soon headed to market, the crew from Autocar took the time to revisit the last real German supercar on a track. So, how has the Carrera GT aged?

According to Autocar, it's still worth every ludicrous cent of its asking price. Sure, there are modern examples from the 911 stable that cost less and serve up 90 percent of the performance, but the Carrera GT continues to deliver foolish thrust and precise handling nearly a decade after it was created. You can check out the video review below to see for yourself.
Continue reading Watch Autocar play with the Porsche Carrera GT

Watch Autocar play with the Porsche Carrera GT originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 04 Nov 2012 20:01:00 EST.
On one side of the Renault Twizy ledger you have a mid-engined, rear-wheel drive "coupe" with instant torque and a RenaultSport-tuned suspension. On the other, you have the equivalent of 17 horsepower. None of those figures would keep Autocar's Steve Sutcliffe from getting to the bottom line, which was to see if he could make the Twizy drift.

Before you ask, no, the video does not contain any electronic music nor a panda in a suit. But it's still worth watching the segment below. As an added bonus, we've included a video of the scissor-doored city car hooking up on the dyno, as well.
Continue reading Yes, Virginia, you can drift a 17-horsepower Renault Twizy

Yes, Virginia, you can drift a 17-horsepower Renault Twizy originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 25 Jun 2012 16:57:00 EST.
There may only be one Aston Martin One-77 left to buy, but not a single journalist has been allowed to actually drive the thing yet. Autocar scribe Steve Cropley gets the closest yet - riding in it with chief engineer Chris Porritt on wheel duty, and Porritt lays out some of the whats and whys of the baddest road-going Aston ever.

Starting off with how the coupe is the ultimate expression of all Aston has learned from its other cars on the VH platform, Porritt discusses the four-foot long chunk of aluminum billet in the center stack, why the engineers chose a single-clutch transmission, and the reason for the line, "It has to do 200 miles per hour. Whatever it does after that is almost immaterial." There's eight minutes of One-77 education in the video after the jump.
Continue reading Ride along in the Aston Martin One-77 with its chief engineer

Ride along in the Aston Martin One-77 with its chief engineer originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 22 Feb 2012 18:58:00 EST.
Okay, this is an easy one. If we told you to pick a performance winner between the Nissan GT-R and the BMW M5, we're guessing the vast majority of you would pick Godzilla to come out on top. Both vehicles feature over 500 horsepower, but the BMW weighs over 400 pounds more, and the GT-R counters with one of the world's most impressive all-wheel-drive systems.

That didn't stop the Autocar team from pitting the M5 against the GT-R in a test of acceleration, cornering, braking, G-force and general feel. Given the GT-R's 0-60 time of 2.8 seconds and its reputation for otherworldly handling, you know how this one is going to play out. But will the Nissan super coupe take all five tests? To be honest, a few of the tests were a bit closer than we would have thought. Hit the jump to check it out.
Continue reading This is the difference between a sports sedan and the GT-R

This is the difference between a sports sedan and the GT-R originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 09 Feb 2012 16:58:00 EST.
Flip through the pages of CAR, EVO or Top Gear, and it's obvious the British motoring press has an unhealthy obsession with getting sideways. Not that we can blame them. We enjoy a healthy dab of oppo as much as the next guy, but when the Pistonheads hive-mind starts crying foul about opposite lock shenanigans, you know it's getting out of hand.

Despite this, AutoCar has started up its own version of Blendtec's puerile "Does it Blend?" series with Will it Drift?

After putting the latest BMW M5 to the test, next up is Mugen's interpretation of the Ariel Atom. But will its 270 horsepower four-pot be enough to overcome the R-compound rubber? And if it does, is the wheelbase too short to keep the slide going? Hit the jump to find out.
Continue reading Mugen Ariel Atom... will it drift?

Mugen Ariel Atom... will it drift? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 Jan 2012 19:42:00 EST.
The 2012 BMW M5 is something of an anomaly. Despite its size and weight, the big luxury sedan is actually quicker than its less corpulent sibling, the BMW M3, around a road course. With a 552-horsepower twin-turbo V8 engine capable of sucking down small communities, there's no arguing the M5's power. But fast cars aren't necessarily fun. Take the Jaguar XKR, for example. It's blisteringly quick, but comes saddled with a traction control system that requires an advanced degree in computer science and a thorough comprehension of black magic to completely disengage. Roasting the tires in the big cat hardly seems worth it.

The M5 is no such beast. The goons at Autocar recently took the portly bruiser out for a little parking lot fun to see just how the machine performs once things get sideways. It would seem that the muscle-bound German is a willing dance partner. Hit the jump to watch the video for yourself.
Continue reading Autocar gets sideways in the 2012 BMW M5

Autocar gets sideways in the 2012 BMW M5 originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 01 Jan 2012 20:01:00 EST.
Autocar's ex-racer scribe Steve Sutcliffe sat himself in the middle of the BAC Mono - which is the only place to sit, actually - and came away with a helmet full of glee. The £79,950 single-seater apparently drives just like an F3 car, an effect created in part by its 1,190-pound weight, 280-horsepower, four-cylinder Cosworth engine and its F3 suspension. Sutcliffe said it handles better than a Lotus Elise, which one might expect of a race car for the road, but that it also drives better, too.

Briggs Automotive Company is making 35 Monos this year, but they're all spoken for. Next year's run of 50 is also sold out. So while you wait for 2013 and a bunch of money to afford it, there's the video after the jump to keep you entertained.
Autocar is reporting that Land Rover may be looking into super-sizing its new Evoque mini-crossover. Word has apparently come down from shadowy sources inside the company that indicates executives are looking to add a fourth model to the Land Rover line. If you believe what you read on the internet, that vehicle will slot between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport in terms of size and price (what this would mean for the LR2/Freelander, we're not sure), but will likely be built on the bones of the smaller Rover. The creation even has a name; "Grand Evoque," which sounds more than a little like a character pulled out of George Lucas', um, mind.

Autocar indicates that the mooted Grand Evoque will even wear similar styling to its smaller forebearer. That includes making use of a traditional five-door design to allow for easy ingress and egress with coupe-like aesthetics. Autocar says that the motivation behind crafting a mid-sized CUV for the Land Rover line comes from the fact that American buyers are pumping cash into the segment at a blistering pace and that the Chinese market is similarly ripe for an explosion.
Land Rover to Biggie-size Evoque? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 22 Jun 2011 15:29:00 EST.
We got right up close and personal with the all-new Lamborghini Aventador when our own Matt Davis spent some quality time with the latest raging bull, and the exotic supercar earned itself plenty of high praise. But if our opinion on this newest Lamborghini isn't enough for you, we would like to offer up another point of view. Steve Sutcliffe of Autocar secured some time with the Aventador and, despite the rain, put together an informative video review.

The clip, which you can view after the jump, is filled with wet-weather drifts, insight from Sutcliffe and the other-worldly howl from that 6.5-liter V12 engine. We're going to end it here so you can stop reading and start watching.
Continue reading Autocar and the Lamborghini Aventador are slingin' in the rain

Autocar and the Lamborghini Aventador are slingin' in the rain originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 May 2011 17:59:00 EST. 2012 Renault Twizy - Click above to view video at Autocar

Autocar got its hands on the 2012 Renault Twizy and took the opportunity to put the electric scooter-cum-city car through its paces. The two-seat runabout isn't due until March, 2012, when it'll hit the streets of Europe hoping to be the next big thing in the microcar segment.

While the diminutive Renault may look like a glorified golf cart, and manages a lowly 47-mph top speed, it picks up with gusto and handles well, thanks to its mass being concentrated close to the ground. As you may imagine for a car of its size, it zips around a tight cone course with no issues.

Couple the Twizy's impressive dynamics with an 80-mile range, and you have a viable scooter alternative for those who just can't stand the incessant buzzing of a 50cc engine. The chances of the Twizy ever arriving in the States is nil, thanks to its microscopic girth and limited range. Head to Autocar to see the review for yourself.
Autocar puts the Renault Twizy through its paces originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 07 May 2011 11:07:00 EST.
The Caparo T1 is the devil on four wheels. There are widespread tales of the T1 attempting to harm anyone who tries to tame it. Autocar must've heard these stories and decided to leave the driving to two-time Formula One World Champion Mika Hakkinen.

The T1's unusual layout allows for a passenger to ride slightly behind the driver. That's the vantage point from which Autocar magazine's Mark Tisshaw took in the action. His narrative is a bit dry, but we're assuming that's because Hakkinen and the Caparo fried his senses. Click past the jump to watch footage of a Caparo T1 not harming anyone. Thanks for the tip, Tim!

Awesome. Guttural. Vicious. Even though the youngest of the 100 McLaren F1 models produced was built 13 years ago, the machine still conjures some of the very best words the English language has to offer polite society. It was only a matter of time before someone lined up the old king of the roost against the new McLaren MP4-12C to find out which is the better weapon for assaulting track records. Autocar has done exactly that, and it's been so kind as to work up an excellent video of the experience.

Which car comes out on top? We'd hate to spoil the fun by saying so here, but it's worth noting that McLaren didn't set out to build the MP4-12C to overtake the F1 in either brute strength or finesse. Instead, the newcomer lives in a category all its own. Hit the jump to take in the action for yourself.

Does a Jaguar crossover make sense? If you're Adrian Hallmark, Jaguar's Global Brand Director, it certainly does. Speaking to Autocar, Hallmark said that Jaguar "needs a crossover and needs to stop being a saloon-based company." We're a bit confused as to exactly why Jaguar needs a CUV when the typical Jaguar shopper could easily afford something from the Land Rover showroom.

Hallmark adds that a Jaguar XF wagon will appear shortly. That, we like, but with Jaguar making noise about a crossover, we find it hard to imagine an XF station wagon ever rolling into US showrooms. Hallmark goes on to say that lightweight cars will become part of the brand's future DNA.

Wait, so how does this crossover fit in with the brand again?

People love running the Nissan GT-R against anything else they can think of... as long as it has four wheels, it must be compared to the Japanese coupe. We've read countless stories of Godzilla taking on cars far above its power grade and price range, yet the stories and videos keep popping up. To be honest, we would compare the turbocharged Nissan to a Wal-Mart shopping cart if it meant we could score some more heavily-bolstered seat time. Autocar seems to agree with this notion, because they lined up a Nissan GT-R, a Formula 3 racecar and a rain-soaked racetrack.

Steve Sutcliffe of Autocar managed to talk himself behind the wheel of a Red Bull Formula 3 racer, and he ran it for a few laps around a wet track. He set his best time, then jumped into the GT-R. Did he manage to better his time in the purpose-built racer? See for yourself by checking out the video after the jump.

Of all the phrases in the English language, few are likely to as accurately describe what it's like to drop the hammer on the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport as "absolutely crackers." That is if you're trying to keep things PG, at least. The crew from Autocar managed to beg, borrow and steal their way into the cockpit of what is perhaps our era's pinnacle of production automotive engineering for a quick blast through the European countryside. Fortunately enough for all of you, they were also kind enough to video the whole shebang.

With a total of 1,200 horsepower and 1,100 lb-ft of torque, the Super Sport is the standard Veyron on amphetamines. If you're brave enough, this horse will theoretically gallop all the way to 268 mph. Of course, you'd need a stretch of highway long enough to not only hit those speeds, but to come back down from them as well. There's no need to worry, they're not driving that black-and-orange one again, so hit the jump to see Autocar's take on the Veyron Super Sport.

Ariel finally put together its long-awaited Atom V8 and handed to the keys to <strike>some lucky sonofa</strike> Autocar to take the eight-pot pocket rocket out for a spin. Matt Prior got some seat time in the light-weight sportscar and provides great insight into this new Atom. Phrases from Prior include; "fastest production car anyone has ever driven," "utterly brilliant" and "TEE HEE HEE."

There are a lot of stats to wrap your head around, but this one seems to sum up it up best: The V8 Atom produces 900 horsepower per ton. By comparison, the Bugatti Veyron produces around 530 horsepower per ton. There's more, but why spoil it when you can hop the jump and watch Prior's jealousy-inducing spin.

Porsche 911 C4S vs the Porsche Cayenne Turbo around Millbrook - Click above to view the video after the jump

According to the Porsche, the 4,784-pound, 500-horsepower Porsche Cayenne Turbo gets from zero to sixty in 4.4 seconds. The 3,219-pound, 385-hp 911 Carrera 4S with PDK takes 4.3 seconds to run the same distance. With such remarkably close acceleration times, Autocar wanted to see if the Cayenne Turbo could hang with the 911 around Millbrook's 1.39-kilometer Outer Handling Circuit. The answer: A lot better than expected. Follow the jump to watch Steve Sutcliffe run both Porsches ragged. Top tip, Steve!
