Visitors to the upcoming Brussels Motor Show - which starts January 11, and is expected to draw some 350,000 visitors - will have to focus all of their attention on the vehicles this year, as event organizers have asked the automakers to keep the eye-candy "appropriately dressed" on the show's floor and exhibits.

Apparently, there were reports of lewd behavior (by male visitors, not the models) at last year's event. This prompted Joelle Milquet, Belgium's equal opportunities minister, to fire off a letter to Belgian car federation Febiac, the company behind the event. "A motor show is a place where you go with your family, we have to question the stereotypes we are passing on to children and young adults," Milquet wrote.

It seems that the spokesmodel's attire is coming under attack quite a bit these days. As you may recall, the Belgian minister's actions come on the heels of Chinese authorities chastising the Beijing Motor Show over its scantily clad models at its most recent event. Does this mean SEMA will eventually become a family-friendly event too?

What do you think - Should automakers stop bringing so-called booth professionals to auto shows?

The Sao Paulo Auto Show is in full swing, and General Motors has chosen the event to showcase the manufacturer's newest subcompact, the Onix. Penned specifically for the Brazilian market, the little creation rides on the same platform as the Chevrolet Sonic and Buick Encore. Buyers can look forward to sinking their teeth into a 1.4-liter, four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission as well as a MyLink infotainment system.

GM is on a war path to expand its B-segment offerings in South America, and the Onix is the latest fruit of those efforts. The manufacturer has shoveled $5 billion into Brazil since 2008, according to CEO Dan Akerson, and the Onix was entirely engineered and designed in the country. Brazil is the third largest market for GM products outside of the US and China.
Chevy unveils Onix subcompact hatchback in Brazil originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 22 Oct 2012 16:00:00 EST.
With the New York Auto Show one month away, 'tis the season to tease the next big thing. For Nissan, that "big thing" is the 2013 Altima. The Altima is by far Nissan's best selling vehicle here in the U.S., and the long-running sedan is in dire need for a fresh new face.

To tease the Altima, the creative types at Nissan decided to eschew the darkened or obscured photograph in favor of, well, a darkened and obscured video. Oh, and the video last all of eight seconds, and four of those ticks are reserved for the Nissan logo. The brief glimpse reveals a sky shot of the Altima that shows off some elegant curves and pronounced headlight fixtures.

The YouTube description adds that the new sedan boasts "a low, wide stance and sculpted profile that makes for quite a dynamic appearance." That's not a lot to go on, but Nissan hopes you'll hit the jump and watch the video anyway.
Continue reading Nissan teases Altima ahead of New York debut

Nissan teases Altima ahead of New York debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 02 Mar 2012 08:30:00 EST.
The 2012 Detroit Auto Show is off to a galloping start. Organizers estimate more than 750,000 people are expected to show up to take in the newest hardware from the world's automakers. Sunday saw 102,918 people attend the exhibition, which is an increase of more than 3,800 people from last year. Likewise, Saturday turned out to be the largest opening day for the Detroit Auto Show in five years. All told, 195,024 people strolled through Cobo hall to take in the sights. This year, the show features more than 500 vehicles, so there's plenty to see.

And it's not just wild exotics and far-flung concepts, either. With key new reveals like the Dodge Dart, Ford Fusion and Cadillac ATS, visitors can take in models they can expect to see on the sho room floor within a few short months.
Chevrolet has pulled the wraps off of a hotter version of its Sonic. The 2013 Sonic RS is headed for an international debut at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show next month, and onlookers can expect to see the hatch curtsey with the same 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine found in uplevel Sonics, tuned to yield 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. Speaking from experience, we can say that those figures are good enough to slather a grin over even the most hardened cynic's face. The RS also brings along a few exterior treatments, including a new front and rear fascia, rear spoiler, side sills and five-spoke alloy wheels.

More importantly, the 2013 Chevrolet Sonic RS packs a lower, stiffer suspension for improved handling. General Motors isn't saying just how much lower or stiffer the pieces are over the base Sonic, which leads us to believe the changes aren't large enough to raise any eyebrows.

Inside, the Sonic RS features sport seats and a sport steering wheel along with aluminum sport pedals and a new gauge cluster treatment. So far, there's no word on how much the Sonic RS will cost. Hit the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading 2013 Chevrolet Sonic RS bows before Detroit Auto Show debut

2013 Chevrolet Sonic RS bows before Detroit Auto Show debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 19 Dec 2011 09:55:00 EST.
Maybe you've seen My Fair Lady - the musical story of an ordinary girl turned into someone altogether more elegant. Now meet Miss Fairlady.

Borrowing the name from the original JDM version of the Nissan Z, Miss Fairlady is the Japanese automaker's program for training its show-stand attendants. As might be expected, the program follows traditional Japanese values like the importance of appearance, manners and pride in one's employment.

Perhaps most importantly - and counter to most car show models we've encountered at other automakers' show stands - a Miss Fairlady is well-versed in everything about the company, from its senior executives to the products they're there to promote, so they're prepared to answer your questions instead of tilting their head in confusion. Follow the jump to watch and see these beautiful spokesmodels get schooled.
Continue reading How Nissan trains its "Miss Fairlady" show stand models

How Nissan trains its "Miss Fairlady" show stand models originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Dec 2011 14:57:00 EST.
According to Automotive News, there may be a new Lincoln concept headed to this year's Los Angeles Auto Show, based on Ford's global small car platform. Information on the car is scarce for now, as Ford is keeping its lips buttoned on the rumor. Though the company won't spill its guts on the possible luxury compact, anonymous insiders claim designers are plugging away as we speak and the car is forthcoming.

We first got a glimpse at a possible Lincoln-branded compact at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, where the automaker debuted the Concept C (pictured above). This concept was powered by a 1.6-liter EcoBoost inline-four mated to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, so perhaps this new, Los Angeles-bound concept is simply a further evolution of the funky little Lincoln from a few years back. The Concept C was said to ride on next-gen (2012) Focus architecture, after all.

The move would certainly make sense for Dearborn, as Cadillac and Mercedes-Benz both have luxury concepts penned and aimed at production. For now, we're left to wait until the LA Auto Show in November to see what the Blue Oval's luxury department has in store.
Running around the country to events like the New York International Auto Show taking pictures and writing about cars seems like a pretty cushy job, doesn't it?

Try doing that with the pressure of impending deadlines, overbearing editors and the constant fight for the best angle on the 2012 Nissan GT-R with an unruly mob of sharp-elbowed writers and photographers. Now imagine that strain on three hours of sleep and a steady diet of bad coffee and worse buffet. Still sound like your cup of tea? Then Nissan has a contest with your name on it.

The makers of the green-as-envy Leaf and the world-beating GT-R are looking for one lucky customer to live the fast-paced automotive journalist lifestyle at this year's New York Auto Show. To enter, post a video of yourself discussing the most innovative feature on your Nissan to the manufacturer's Facebook page by April 12.

The winner will get an expenses-paid trip to New York for the press days at this year's show. That means exclusive in-person looks at the 2012 Nissan GT-R, the Murano CrossCab and Nissan's promised all-new compact car. The contest is open to anyone who thinks they can handle the strain that is automotive journalism. If you can wake up at 6 a.m., stay on your feet until 2 a.m. and still manage to get an automotive honcho to stop dodging your knife-edged questions, the game is yours.

The contest opened April 1, so if you haven't shot your video yet, your behind schedule with a fast-approaching deadline. Pull a winning video together by April 12, and you'll be spending April 19-21 rubbing elbows with the automotive elite and, well... the likes of us. Miss the due date and you'll have to settle for watching the action from your couch. Fire up your camera and get moving, but not before you read all the details in the press release after the break.

Look very closely and you may notice the subtle changes Toyota has made to its Matrix for the 2011 model year. If your eyes are still failing you (as were ours at first glance), we'll point them all out. There are new wheels across the board, Smart Stop technology has been added to curb pedal misapplication complications, and the automaker's "Toyota Care" complimentary maintenance plan is now standard. That wasn't too difficult, was it?

As was the case last year, the 2011 Matrix is again offered in Base and S trim levels with a standard 1.8-liter four-cylinder (132 horsepower) or a more powerful 2.4-liter four-cylinder (158 horsepower). The standard powertrain is front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive optional on the higher trim level with the larger engine. Those seeking a bit more driving excitement (well, at least visual excitement) need to add the optional Sport Package to their S model, as it adds 17-inch alloy wheels, underbody spoilers, and a painted rear spoiler. Oh, we almost forgot... a new color, called Spruce Mica, joins the exterior palate for 2011.

Next time you walk up to a BMW at an auto show, you won't be left to merely read the specs and imagine what the car looks like in more worldly conditions. BMW is equipping its stands at "Major American Auto Shows" with a iPads that will present interactive content in English and Spanish, along with a configurator, videos and photographs and to schedule a test drive. The BMW iPad techfest is going on now at the South Florida International Auto Show in Miami and expect it to appear in your own backyard soon.

According to The New York Times, the 42nd installment of the Tokyo Motor Show will continue to shrink next year. Organizers have decided to move the shindig to a new, smaller convention center that is closer to downtown Tokyo. The show hasn't actually been staged in downtown Tokyo in some 24 years. For 2011, the event will also run for just 10 days instead of the traditional 14, and the date has been moved from October to December. The changes have come after last year's event where multiple big-name automakers skipped Tokyo in favor of other higher profile auto shows.

Not too long ago, the Tokyo Motor Show was the largest automotive event in Asia, but it has since been eclipsed by the likes of China's Beijing Motor Show and Shanghai Motor Show events which alternate years. With high-end marks like Ferrari and BMW rushing to the wealth of new money in the People's Republic, odds are the Tokyo show won't recover anytime soon.
Those painfully trendy hamsters and their brand-new Kia Soul managed to nab Nielson's Most Effective Automotive Ad Award. Of all the car ads out there, the 2.5 million TV viewers polled by Nielsen remembered the most about the clever spot from Kia. And why not? The adorable anthropomorphic animals and good tunes featured in the ad manage to make a solid impression. It beat out Cadillac's commercial featuring Kate Walsh and an ad for the Chevrolet Silverado starring Howie Long.

Nielsen's been handing out the awards at the New York Auto Show for four years now. Last year, Ford took top honors with a commercial that featured real-life women test-driving the Ford Focus for the first time. Hit the jump to see Kia's winning rodents.

While I'm not likely to get a lot of sympathy, do be aware that I'll be wearing out a lot of shoe leather, this week, during the two day press preview of the Geneva Motor Show. By my preliminary count, I expect more than 50 news conferences, with as many as 75 cars and concepts to make their debuts at the sprawling PALExpo conference center.

Put another way, that's nearly as many vehicles as were previewed at the most recent Los Angeles, Detroit and Chicago shows combined. And that's good news for those who worry that the classic car show is an endangered species.

Well, actually, it is. There's a growing consensus that car shows simply aren't doing what they're supposed to, which is to move metal. "Auto shows don't sell cars," insists the oft-controversial Mike Jackson, chairman of the nation's largest dealer chain, AutoNation.

2011 Ford Edge Sport - Click above for high-res image gallery

Ford rolled out its 2011 Edge, with a triad of engine choices, in Chicago this morning. As we mentioned earlier, the 2011 variant will offer the all-new EcoBoost 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The four-cylinder turbo, with direct-injection, promises 20-percent better fuel economy without sacrificing performance or suffering emission penalties (Ford has yet to release any specifics on horsepower, torque or fuel economy). The standard engine will be a 3.5-liter V6 (285 horsepower and 253 lb-ft of torque), while the Edge Sport (pictured above) is fitted with a 3.7-liter Ti-VCT V6 (305 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque).

The front fascia is completely reworked with a new fresh look, while the rear is only slightly updated - the greenhouse appears untouched. Mechanically, the brake system has been upgraded with larger rear rotors, improved pad composition and a revised brake booster. The Edge SEL and Edge Limited wear standard 18-inch tires - now one-half inch wider, with 20-inch tires optional on both. The Edge Sport has (gulp!) 22-inch wheels standard, a class-exclusive says Ford.

Inside, the dashboard has been completely redesigned around the centerpiece MyFord Touch infotainment center. Standard on the Edge Limited and Edge Sport, the system utilizes a 8.0-inch full-color touch-sensitive LCD screen in the center console. Complementing the main display is the revised instrument panel with dual multi-tasking 4.2-inch information panels on each side of the speedometer that are operated via five-way spoke-mounted thumb switches on the steering wheel. With about a gazillion different features, including the ability to have your Edge welcome you by name when you enter the vehicle, the industry-leading MyTouch system keeps getting better and better - its revised application in the 2011 Ford Edge only serves to reinforce the message. Check out the video and press release after the jump.

With manufacturer attendance dwindling at expos worldwide, now might seem to be just about the worst time to launch a new motor show. But that's exactly what the Earl of March and his team at Goodwood are planning. That is, if the latest reports from England prove accurate.

According to the report, the 2010 Goodwood Festival of Speed - a longstanding fixture of the automotive calendar - could be preceded by a car show featuring displays from manufacturers and even a 3.5-mile track on which prospective buyers would be able to take the new cars for test drives.

Word has it that Alfa Romeo - this year's "featured marque" in commemoration of the Italian automaker's centenary - will use the event to debut the new Giulietta. And with the future of the official British International Motor Show still up in the air, Goodwood could step in to fill in.

General Motors feels it has a lineup stuffed with vastly improved products and it wants to get as many customers behind the wheel of a new Chevy, Cadillac, GMC or Buick to prove its point. Anyone can head over to the local dealership for a test drive, but the General is reportedly looking for even more ways to get you to evaluate a new GM product, including test drives right at your local auto show.

The Detroit News reports that GM is working with officials from COBO and the city of Detroit to set up a driving route so that consumers can test the automaker's products on-site. Vehicles likely be featured include new products such as the 2010 Buick LaCrosse, Chevy Equinox, GMC Terrain and Cadillac SRX. The test drive area at COBO is reportedly part of GM's totally revamped 85,000 sq ft exhibit space, which includes more interactive displays and plenty of areas to show off new technology like direct injection and the Voltec system. Obviously, the General needed to make some major changes, since it won't need displays for Pontiac, Saab and Saturn in 2010.

Customer test drives were piloted at the New England Auto Show earlier this year, where Cadillac reportedly put over 1,400 people behind the wheel. GM is also looking to set up drives at several other major shows, including Chicago in February, but the biggest push will take place in major metropolitan areas on the east and west coasts, where GM product consideration is weakest.

Auto show test drives make perfect sense, considering that millions of showgoers attend these events every year. People who pay $12 to look at cars in a crammed and crowded convention center are likely the exact same people to get excited about new products. Why not give them seat time and let the word-of-mouth flow?

This isn't the first time we've seen the drop-top Audi R8 Spyder. Images were leaked in early September, and we were there in Frankfurt for its official debut. That said, its unveiling at the LA Auto Show was less than climactic... other than the fact the Spyder was sporting a flashy bright-red bodywork.

New hue aside, the new convertible variant is a looker from its carbon-fiber mirrors to polished aluminum wheels. The blades are gone and it has gained 476 pounds in the transformation, but the standard Lambo-derived 525-hp V10 will still rip it to 60 mph in about four seconds flat. For the details (again), we've posted the press release after the jump.

Audi e-tron concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

We weren't exactly electrified by Audi's e-tron concept when it debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in blazing red paint this past September, but we did like the color. So, when the e-tron reappeared at the LA Auto Show this week wearing orange... bummer.

As a refresh, the e-tron concept uses four electric motors with a combined output of 313 horsepower (and a mind-boggling 3,319 lb-ft of torque) to move its 3,527-pound mass to 62 mph in 4.8 seconds. More impressive is its rolling acceleration from 37-75 mph in just 4.1 seconds. The top speed is electronically-limited to 124 mph. According to Audi, we'll see a production version in 2012.
With the LA Auto Show near at hand, Chris, Dan, and Editor Extraordinaire Paukert sat down and talked over some of the latest for Episode #155 of the Autoblog Podcast. First up is the surprisingly thorough re-rework of the Mustang, before we move on to talk about the early release of U.S.-spec Ford Fiesta pictures. Gazing at photos brings us to the Chevrolet Cruze, which has also been lensed in North American garb. The Chinese-market Buick Excelle is rumored as a possibility for our market, and we scratch our heads about that for a while. Toyota's handling of its gas pedal recall and Nissan's low-priced and well-integrated navigation unit wraps it up before we move on to some of your questions. Right before signing off, we jump back to talk briefly about the newly unveiled Audi A8 and Saab's sad fortunes. At one hour, 50 minutes, it's an epic. We blame Paukert.

As far as cars went, the Frankfurt Motor Show was the proverbial glut of riches, and the Tokyo Motor Show proved that you can't live life at the top all the time. Tokyo did, however, still provide plenty of aesthetic beauty, much of which had nothing to do with the automobiles. We won't call it a consolation prize, but it's certainly not something we're upset about.

Have a look at what arguably might have been the finest aspects of the Tokyo Motor Show in the gallery below - and the woman with the stuffed car on her head (it is still Tokyo, after all...). (*Translation: "The beautiful women of Makuhari Messe").

Gallery: The beautiful women of Tokyo 2009

Photos copyright (C)2009 Jonathon Ramsey / Weblogs, Inc.
Tokyo 2009: Makuhari Messe no Jyosei ha Bijin desu* originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Oct 2009 19:59:00 EST.
