The Toyota Prius V has a lot to recommend it, but adventurous and sporty styling is not in its repertoire. That's why this new Auris Touring Sports has our attention. Claimed to be the "first full hybrid estate car" in the compact class, this two-box Auris has genuine visual panache to go with its load-lugging capability and parsimonious fuel economy. In the metal, we think its v-shaped grille and headlamp treatment acquits itself better than it does on the new RAV4, a model that shares its new design language.

Built by Toyota UK, the Auris Touring Sports hybrid is powered by a familiar-sounding 1.8-liter gas engine paired with an electric motor, with total system output quoted at 134 horsepower. The model will also be available in a variety of gas or diesel trims if you prefer your vehicle sans electrification (a non-hybrid model is shown). It goes on sale later this year in Europe, but don't hold your breath to see one in North America.
Toyota showed off the Touring Sports version of the Auris next to the newly introduced Auris Hybrid at last year's Paris Motor Show, but didn't say much about it. Six months later, just ahead of the Geneva Motor Show, the company is crowing about that wagon going on sale with the Hybrid Synergy Drive, creating the Auris Touring Sports Hybrid.

The hauling version of the exceptionally popular Auris hatchback doesn't just add a hybrid wagon to the compact segment, Toyota says it offers class-leading load capacity of 1,658 liters with the Easy-Flat one-touch rear seats down. With the rear seats up, it offers 530 liters. The little big gulp is possible because the hybrid batteries have been placed under the rear seats instead of being in the luggage area.

It looks the same as the hatchback save for the fact that it's 285 millimeters (11.2 inches) longer behind the C pillar, has a redesigned tailgate and a lower load floor. Engines beyond the hybrid will match the rest of the lineup: 1.3-liter and 1.6-liter gasoline engines and a 1.4-liter D-4D diesel. There's a chance we'll see it in Geneva, if we don't there's a press release below to tell you all about it.
Continue reading Toyota Auris gets new Touring Sports variant

Toyota Auris gets new Touring Sports variant originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 19 Feb 2013 08:27:00 EST.
Cats generally don't like car rides. Cats universally detest veterinarians. Yet to showcase the die-for-it allure of the Toyota Corolla in New Zealand (which isn't our Corolla but the European Auris), ad house Saatchi and Saatchi asked, "What lengths would a cat go to for a ride if they loved it?"

The answer is the 90-second tale of a cat who intentionally puts himself through seven feline hells to feed his need for another ride in the new hatchback. To the vet. Implausible, yes. Humorous, also yes. You can watch the ad below.
Continue reading This cat thinks the Toyota Corolla is to die for

This cat thinks the Toyota Corolla is to die for originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 17 Oct 2012 15:03:00 EST.
Toyota may have given us the full spec-sheet on its revised Auris before the car made its official Parisian debut, but our first live look at the next-generation wagon nevertheless proves compelling. The longer, lower five-door looks the part of a better-handling hatchback - just the role that Toyota hopes the hybrid can play in the European market.

The Hybrid seen here is the second-generation gas-electric Auris, and it will be the top-level powertrain option for European buyers. Toyota expects that a full one-third of Auris buyers will select that Hybrid Synergy Drive model - the other two-thirds of buyers are expected to be evenly split between the diesel- and gasoline-powered versions of the car.

A replacement for the Toyota Matrix is indeed long overdue, but according to Automotive News, a successor to the Japanese automaker's tall hatchback won't be found in the new 2013 Auris hatchback.

Hiroya Fujita, chief engineer of the Matrix and the Japanese-spec Corolla, says that Toyota has no plans to offer the Auris in the United States, citing that demand for hatchbacks in the U.S. is still too weak. (Or is it?) Automotive News reports that Fujita declined to comment on a replacement for the Matrix, which still rides on the old MC platform that has underpinned the last three generations of Corolla models.

A brand new Corolla is in the pipeline for the U.S., but with no certain future for the Matrix in sight, AN suggests that Toyota's larger five-door may simply die.
Toyota says Auris isn't the next Matrix originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 17 Sep 2012 08:26:00 EST.
How do you follow up androgyny? With a Spanking Orchestra, obviously. Proving that the 2013 Toyota Auris has depths we haven't begun to comprehend, Toyota's Japanese ad agency has followed up the head-turning spot with Stav Strashko by kitting an Auris out with "spanking machines" and putting it on display at the Daikanyama Art Street festival.

The machines are computer-controlled hands that tap (or spank, if you prefer) the car to the programmed beat. As if that weren't enough, two pairs of free-standing hands, with arms, clap time at either end of the car. If there's a meaning to it, we're not aware of it, but it's fascinating to watch.

It isn't often - actually, never - that we get to say, "Ladies and gentlemen, we present The Spankers." You'll find them below, and the action begins in the first video at the 2:40 mark.
Continue reading Toyota Auris goes further off the rails with 'Spanking Orchestra'

Toyota Auris goes further off the rails with 'Spanking Orchestra' originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 31 Aug 2012 14:59:00 EST.
This one will take some puzzling. Toyota has released an ad for the company's brand-new 2013 Auris hatchback, complete with a topless model. It's not what you think, however. The agency behind the spot contracted Stav Strashko, a 19-year-old male model born in the Ukraine and raised in Israel for the role. Strashko has a distinctly androgynous appearance and has modeled women's clothing in the past. He says he gets mistaken for a female fairly often, but believes "the mind sees what it wants." This may very well be the point of the Auris ad.

After Strashko struts for the camera, the text on the screen reads, "Not trendy, not casual, not for everyone." If shock value was the intent, it seems to be working - the new five-door's ad has soaked up more than 650,000 views on YouTube since Sunday. Something tells us we should brand this one with a potentially Not Safe For Work tag. Check out the clip and a behind-the-scenes video below.
Continue reading Toyota shocks ad world with topless androgynous model

Toyota shocks ad world with topless androgynous model originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Aug 2012 16:58:00 EST.
The Toyota Auris has been comprehensively reworked, now only awaiting its Paris Motor Show debut. It's still a small package, but it's got a big burden: Toyota says it represents a "determination to engineer cars that are more appealing and dynamically engaging to drive while building on its long-established reputation for quality, durability and reliability."

In the appealing corner, the front and back have been sharpened, the stylistic tweaks making for an especially cutting schnoz that helps the new Auris achieve a coefficient of drag of 0.28. The whole car has been lengthened by 30 millimeters (about 1.2 inches) and lowered by 55 millimeters (about 2.2 inches); it's stance is lower than any other "mainstream C-segment" offering, according to the company. More practically, the roof gets Skyview - a huge panorama glass roof and the tailgate gets a wider opening.

Inside, the cabin gets upgraded appointments everywhere: soft-textured door grips, padded armrests on the doors, fabric-trimmed pillars, satin silver finishes, leather trimming on the dash on some models, a soft-touch covering on the IP's upper surface and baseball-stitched nappa leather around the steering wheel. There's also more space due to the new packaging, with rear passengers getting 20 mm more knee room and the boot getting 90 mm more load space - all hatchback models, including the hybrid, boast 360 liters of cargo room (12.7 cubic feet).

Dynamically, that lower stance should be of some assistance, and the use of high-tensile steel increases stiffness, lowers the hatchback's center of gravity and cuts weight by up to 88 pounds. The steering and suspension have also received unnamed revisions to make for a better drive. In addition to the top-flight Hybrid Synergy Drive model, powerplants on offer will be 1.3-liter and 1.6-liter gasoline engines and a 1.4-liter diesel.

If you'd like even more facts and figures on the 2013 Auris, you'll find them in the press release below.
Continue reading New Toyota Auris revealed ahead of Paris Motor Show

New Toyota Auris revealed ahead of Paris Motor Show originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Aug 2012 08:45:00 EST.
You've seen the Toyota GRMN iQ Racing Concept (lucky you!), and now it's time to divert your attention towards the rest of the Japanese automaker's wares being shown off at the Tokyo Auto Salon.

First up is the Toyota Prius G Sports Concept, which features the kind of gaping maw only the Mama Cylon could love. Rounding out Toyota's offerings is the TRD Auris GT Concept, which we think actually looks kinda nifty with its subdued body kit and blindingly bright yellow paint.

Lexus wasn't left out of the proceedings either, and its machines are arguably more interesting than its mothership's. There's the F-Sport CT 200h (a future production model) taking center stage with its unique alloy wheels, body kit and Recaro seats, which is joined by the IS F Club Circuit Sports Racer and a set of Club Performance Accessories for the IS F that include front and rear spoilers and a carbon fiber hood.

Last but certainly not least is the Gazoo Racing Lexus LFA supercar that raced at last year's Nürburgring 24 Hours race. See both sets of vehicular craziness in our high-res image galleries below, then check out all the details in the press releases after the break.

Toyota manufacturing plants are beginning to feel the backlash from the company's wave after wave of recent global recalls. The company just announced it will stop production at its European facilities for a total of 12 days in April. The plants are responsible for building the European Yaris and upcoming Auris hybrid, but since demand for the company's products are currently hanging out in dumpsters everywhere, workers will find themselves with a few extra days of unwanted vacation.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the European production stop comes on the heels of similar action here in the States. Toyota recently decided to "adjust production" at two of its factories here in the land of the free. Workers at those locations can expect the doors to be closed for a total of two weeks over the course of March and April.
Toyota isn't saying much about the refreshed 2010 Auris right now, waiting for the Geneva unboxing, but here are a couple of photos to get you excited. It looks like there will be little nips and tucks all around, such as new fog light enclosures and lower front grille profile. Standard runners will get six engine choices, and the Auris HSD Hybrid will arrive for those who insist on going green. It will go on sale this Spring. A short press release is after the jump, and a coupe of high-res images await your eyes below.

And now for your viewing pleasure, we bring you these live shots of the Toyota Auris HSD Full Hybrid Concept (seriously, could Toyota have come up with a longer name?). Technically, the vehicle shown in our image gallery below is listed as a concept car, but every indication is that it's not all that different than what will be rolling out of Burnaston factory in England sometime during the second half of 2010.

We wouldn't necessarily count on the dash-mounted solar panels that feature trays to recharge your electronics - though, how cool would that be? - but the rooftop cells may make it into production to help keep the cabin cool on sunny days as a similar system already is optional on the 2010 Prius. In any case, Toyota's 1.8-liter four cylinder and Hybrid Synergy Drive ought to ensure stellar fuel economy and carbon emissions of below 100 g/km - both important considerations across the pond where gas is especially pricey and taxes are high.

Hit the jump to reread the press release and refresh your memory on all the little concept-appropriate details.
In the UK and other parts of the world, they get the Auris, a three- or five-door hatch-type-thing. While Toyotas in the United States are sleepy affairs, the Auris is ringing in 2008 with a sporty, well-equipped SR180 version. Looking great with a lowered suspension from Toyota Motorsport and blacked out rear glass, the Auris appears intimately involved with the pavement. There's a subtle spoiler atop the hatch, which always gives a nice finish to the back end of this style car, and the wheel arches are nicely filled with 17-inch alloy rims. Underhood, Toyota's D-4D Diesel provides 175 horsepower and a whopping 294 ft-lbs of torque through a six-speed manual while returning 38 mpg (US) on a combined cycle.

Equipment levels are up, providing the driver with such goodies as dual-zone climate control, automatic headlamps and wipers, and cruise control. Stability and traction-control systems are standard, too. It all sounds and looks very good until you run the roughly £18,500 price through a currency conversion - coming out the other side at about $37,000 greenbacks. Some people would sell a kidney on eBay for the opportunity to get something like this Stateside, and it certainly is a rare Toyota that makes us say "That's cool." If you're someplace where you can take advantage of it, order yours now for January delivery.

[Source: Toyota]

Gallery: Toyota Auris SR180

Continue reading Euro-only Toyota Auris gains sporty SR180 model

Euro-only Toyota Auris gains sporty SR180 model originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 27 Dec 2007 17:56:00 EST. Toyota will be updating the Matrix in Spring 2008 and the automaker is using the Mazda3 as its design inspiration (good choice) for the hatchback. The Corolla-based vehicle is already sold in Europe as the Auris and in Japan as the Blade. The US-based Matrix will have different sheet metal than in other markets but it may be taking on the Blade name since Toyota has registered the name with the US Patent and Trademark office. The Japan market Blade has a 2.4L engine producing 158 HP, which would be a big bump from the 126 HP that powers the current Matrix.

Based on the Auris, the Blade gets a sharper edge of style with a sculpted front end that's more aggressive than the bloated face of the Auris. Unlike what we told you yesterday, Toyota did not announce a powerful 280-hp V6 as an engine option for the Blade, at least it hasn't yet. At launch, the Blade will be powered by Toyota's 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, which Wikipedia lists as producing 157 hp and 162 ft-lbs of torque. Toyota didn't release official power figures for the engine's use in the Blade, so those numbers may turn out to be different. The engine will be paired with what Toyota calls its Super CVT-i, a continuously variable transmission with seven programmed "speeds" if people still yearn the kick-down of a cog, and will be available in front- and all-wheel drive. As a premium hatchback, the Blade also gets many electronic nannies including Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, side and curtain shield airbags, as well as a driver's seat knee bag.

Read more of our thoughts and check out the official press release from Toyota after the jump.

[Source: Toyota]
Continue reading Toyota officially launches the Blade

Toyota officially launches the Blade originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 21 Dec 2006 14:29:00 EST. The vehicle will reportedly have multiple trims, including one with a 280-hp V6 (!). The website happened to run across a parking lot full of Blades while test driving the Auris and snapped an album's worth of pics. From the pictures we can see the Blade has a different front end than the Auris that's sharper with a more traditional grille and aggressive lower front fascia. New wheels and clear taillights are also part of thep package. They report the Blades were being prepared to be shipped by sea, which means the car is destined for markets outside of Japan, though probably not the U.S. Score one for Nihon Car & Bike for the scoop, and we'll bring you more details of the Blade tomorrow after Toyota debuts the vehicle officially.

Follow the Read link to check out additional pics of the Blade, including a side-by-side comparison with a standard Auris.

[Source: Nihon Car & Bike]
Toyota about to brandish the Blade, upscale Auris with 280-hp V6 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 20 Dec 2006 11:02:00 EST. Today Toyota has taken the wraps off of the production version of the Auris to give Euro folk a peek at what to expect from the company's new C-segment hatch. Initially available in both three- and five-door hatchback versions, the Auris can be had with one of no less than five engines, two gas and three diesel. The petrol powerplants include a 1.4 VVT-i (97 HP) and 1.6 Dual VVT-i (124 HP), while the oil burners are a 1.4 D-4D (90 HP), 2.4 D-4D (126 HP) and 2.2 D-4D Clean Power (177 HP). With the latter engine, the Auris can hit 62 mph in 8.1 seconds. Euros can swap cogs with the Auris's 6-speed manual transmission or a MultiMode automatic transmission with paddle shifters on select models.

So now Toyota has actually unveiled two new Corollas in the past month, the Auris for Europe and the Axio / Fielder wagon in Japan. Both are two very different cars, and we couldn't find agreement from our sources about which one will be sold in the U.S. From what we gather, the U.S. will get a version of the Axio sold in Japan, though it will wear styling similar to the Auris and, for that matter, the Yaris that's already on sale in the U.S.

More pics and Toyota of Europe's complete press release after the jump.

[Source: Toyota via Autoblog Spanish]
Continue reading Europeans gets first look at Toyota Auris

Europeans gets first look at Toyota Auris originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 Oct 2006 13:23:00 EST. The new JDM Corolla is a subtle redesign and will not form the basis for future sedans sold stateside, which will draw more cues from the Auris and come equipped with a 2-liter engine.

The JDM version comes in two flavors - the Axio for the sedan and the Fielder for the wagon version. Power will come from a 1.8-liter inline-four, fitted to the automaker's Super CVT-i gearbox and will come standard with trick features, including electric-folding rear seats and backup camera.
Hatchback, Toyota hath named thee, and thy name is Auris. Based on the Corolla sedan and placed up-market from the sprightly Yaris, the Auris five-door hatch features design elements similar to its kid brother, particularly around the front end with its the bulbous hood, oversized headlamps and grille with prominent emblem.

With the popularity of hatchbacks over sedans a fact in overseas markets, the Auris will be sold in Europe. There are many variations of the Corolla sold around the world, and the one sold in the U.S. is not the same as the hatchback that Europeans are offered, so it's unlikely we'll ever see the Auris this side of the pond. There likely will never by an Aygo sold here, as well.

Auris is the Latin word for "good taste". Think it's fitting, or is it a misnomer?
