5Audi updates Q5 for 2013 with supercharged V6 and hybrid option [w/videos]

Introduced back in 2008, the Audi Q5 was about due for a mid-life refresh, which is exactly what the German automaker has given it. Not that you'd be easily able to tell from looking at it, though: the styling updates to the popular CUV are rather subtle, as are the enhancements to the interior, which center around the control surfaces. No, what's really new about the 2013 version of the Q5 is what lurks in the engine bay.

AddAudi Q5 Hybrid DOA

First, Audi announced that it would be offering both its Q7 large SUV and Q5 midsize SUV with optional hybrid powertrains. All summer long, it seemed that the German automaker went back and forth with its Q7, ultimately deciding to focus in on diesel technology in lieu of the hybrid. We were still expecting the Q5 to be offered with a hybrid option, but that now seems to unlikely. Autocar reports that Audi isn't happy with the crash-test performance of its nickel metal hydride batteries, though

AddJapan may get Audi Q5 hybrid around 2012

America got its first look at Audi's new Q5 mid-size SUV during the recent Audi Mileage Marathon. Those examples were powered by the company's 3.0L V6 diesel engine. So far there is no word from Audi on when or if Americans will ever be able to buy a Q5 TDI. For the moment the only Q5 powertrain confirmed for the U.S. is the 3.6L gas V6. When we got a preview of the Q5 in Germany last April, Audi officials discussed another possibility, a hybrid. Plans to introduce a hybrid version of the larger

AddAudi Q7 hybrid in hold, Q5 coming with lithium battery

Audi's first mass-production hybrid model was to have been the Q7 SUV beginning in early 2009. As Audi officials told ABG back in April, that program has been effectively canceled. Audi had been working on the development with VW and Porsche, whose Touareg and Cayenne share their platforms with the Q7. Audi R&D Boss Michael Dick has confirmed to Autocar that development of hybrids with nickel metal hydride batteries has been put on hold. Instead, the company will focus on lithium battery hyb

AddYes they will, no they won't: maybe Audi will intro Q7 hybrid in '09, or not

The only thing that seems to be certain about Audi's hybrid plans is that absolutely nothing is certain. Just since the Los Angeles Auto Show in November, Audi officials have said they will build a Q7 hybrid in 2009, then at the Detroit Auto Show in January they said they would build an A4 hybrid instead. In Detroit they showed an A4 hybrid powertrain and Product Mgr, Carter Balkom said that car was coming in 2009. More recently, Audi has indicated they wouldn't build a Q7 hybrid but would inste
