With just 75 built between 1959 and 1963, the Aston Martin DB4 GT is a rare breed. Of those, a mere six are the coveted lightweight models that cut weight by using aluminum components (instead of steel) and delete items like the radio, speakers, and heater. It's not very often that one comes up for sale, but this January, RM Auctions will be offering a pristine example at their sale in Scottsdale.

The car going up for auction is chassis #0175/L, the last DB4 GT Lightweight built. It underwent a total restoration in the mid-Nineties where it received upgrades like Dunlop racing tires, Dayton wire wheels, and a four-point roll bar. The car wasn't competitively raced in the Sixties, but several owners have competed with the car in various vintage races at tracks like Lime Rock Park and Laguna Seca.

Sound like your kind of car? RM estimates you'll need anywhere from $950,000-$1,000,000 to take this ruby beauty home. If you don't have that kind of cash, then you'll have to settle for the press release after the jump and the high-res gallery below.

Gallery: 1963 Aston Martin DB4 GT Lightweight

[Source: RM Auctions]
Continue reading Rare Aston Martin DB4 GT Lightweight going to highest bidder at RM's Arizona auction

Rare Aston Martin DB4 GT Lightweight going to highest bidder at RM's Arizona auction originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 Nov 2009 19:24:00 EST. At its press conference this morning, CEO Fritz Henderson let slip to members of the media that the automaker is engaged in talks with online auction site eBay "to revolutionize how people buy cars online." According to Henderson, GM has plans to try selling its vehicles online:

"Customers will be able to bid on actual vehicles just like they do in an eBay auction, including the option of choosing a predetermined 'Buy It Now' price... we'll be testing this and other ideas with our dealers over the next few weeks, and hope to expand and build upon them in the coming months... in all cases, our goal is to make the shopping and buying process as easy as possible for GM customers - on their time and their terms. Stay tuned."

Many individual GM dealers already use the auction powerhouse to sell vehicles, so the move isn't completely uncharted territory, but it isn't immediately clear how (or if) the automaker plans to integrate its dealer body within this process. Henderson was quick to reinforce that the company's plans with eBay are just an experiment, so as the CEO says... stay tuned.
Henderson: GM to experiment selling cars through eBay Motors originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 Jul 2009 10:58:00 EST. It's been working for years on eBay Motors, and now Canadian auction house RM Auctions is joining the fold.

Even those who don't closely follow classic car transactions may recognize RM as the auction house that set new records with the $10.8m ex-James Coburn 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder and then set 'em again with the $12.2m 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa at the annual Ferrari auction in Maranello. Ferrari has since launched an online benefit auction for research scholarships, and on August 9, RM will follow suit with its own premier online auction.

Registration starts July 10 and several enticing - albeit hardly record-worthy - vintage rides will be on offer, including a 1953 Cadillac convertible (pictured above) and a 1963 Corvette split-window coupe.
This year's Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS) should be even bigger than last year despite dropouts

Thanks to your suggestions, last month we added a Google Calendar after the jump so you can bookmark it and constantly receive updates as we add them. We appreciate all of your input and hope you find our calendar a useful tool. We also appreciate your comments listing events we might have overlooked or that are just near-and-dear to your hearts.

Highlights for January include the North American International Auto Show, which we will be covering extensively from Detroit; the Arizona collectible car auctions featuring Barrett-Jackson, RM Auctions, Russo and Steele and others; the La Jolla Motorcar Classic at The Cove; the Cavallino Classic from The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida; and the kickoff of the 2009 motorsports season with the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

As always, we want to give a shoutout to our two favorite sources; The New York Times automotive calendar for national and international stuff, and for local stuff here in Southern California, our buddy Dave Lindsay's SoCalCarCulture pages. Dave's photographic coverage of these local events is fantastic. So check out the January event calendar we put together for you after the jump and start adding to it. But what if a 1968 Checker Wagon in good condition and with the Factory Taxi option -- just the one you've been looking for -- is added at the last minute? How do you know how much to pay?

The guide gives you Checker prices broken down in three tiers for the sedan and the wagon, ranging from $7,200 to $20,500. It also lets you know to add another $3,500 for the Factory Taxi option, and a further 20-percent if it were a 1970-71 with the V8. It's the kind of tool that might help you never pay too much for a classic car at auction again. Or, at the very least, you'll know ahead of time that you're about to take a bath on that yellow submarine...

[Source: Cars That Matter]
Cars That Matter mobile price guide originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 08 Aug 2008 09:58:00 EST. Held on the last two holes of the Ritz's golf course, this year's event will host 250 rare cars from private collections and museums, the traditional RM Auction, and will also be GM's splashdown as the first event of the General's 100-year anniversary. It will include the auctioning or appearance of three one-of-a-kind vehicles, and a Trans-Am rumble honoring Parnelli Jones. And who doesn't like the sound of a Trans-Am rumble?

How can you get it? There's an automobile design flaw that's killing massive numbers of people. When it is revealed, "billions of dollars worth of personal injury and wrongful death litigation" will commence. Want to know what it is? Then head over to eBay and pay someone called "topshopper" $150,000 for the rights to the story.

This has got to be the most interesting auto-related auction we've seen all year -- which is saying something, with all that's flopped over the transom of eBay over the last twelve months. There's a even solution for this mystery mass-death-causing flaw, for which a (supposed) patent is pending. No word on whether topshopper holds the key to that as well. And topshopper, you'll be glad to know, has a 100% feedback rating for his or her two transactions over the last seven years.

We have no idea what it could be, but if you do buy the rights, please let us know first. We promise to give you credit. And when you're finished spreading the word on that story, we here at Autoblog have a map that can tell you where monsters and leprechauns live. We have a picture of a unicorn to prove it. Make your checks payable to Autoblog...

Thanks for the tip, John!
The above 1962 Ferrari 330 TRI/LM raced Le Mans in 1962, was crashed there in 1963, and then driven every day as a commuter car in New York City from 1965 to 1974 (back when the city that never sleeps was the city that just didn't give a damn). It surely cost a good looking penny when it was made, but this year it topped the auction sales sheets, going for $9.3 million dollars.

Perhaps it was due to this year being Ferrari's 60th anniversary, or rich folk just decided to put some of the best examples in play: eight of the top fifteen cars on the list are of the marque from Maranello. No other maker had even two cars on the list, although there were three cars that start with "D": Duesenberg, Delage and DeDion. Even the least expensive car on the list would get you a Veyron, a Murcielago, a down payment on a house, a Bentley GT as a winter beater, and an around-the-world vacation by private jet with spending money to spare: a 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Corto that sold for $2.82 million.

[Source: BusinessWeek via Carscoop]
The 15 most expensive cars of 2007; #1 could buy you 5 Veyrons originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 26 Nov 2007 12:32:00 EST. Christie's didn't give any reason for closing down the division, other than being the result of a "strategic review of its various operations." The house has sold some of the world's rarest, most expensive, unobtainable, and coveted vehicles. Most recently, the firm auctioned Steve McQueen's 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso at Pebble Beach (shown above). The car went for $2.31 million, almost doubling the highest estimate. The division will be closed as of this month.

August on eBay is the season of celebrity car flogging, with Sean Connery's 635 CSI and a BMW 320is owned by a post-Risky Business Tom Cruise going now. 50 Cent, perhaps making space at one of the mansions for the season's new rides, has thrown his chrome Lamborghini Murcielago into the mix. Inside is black leather with contrasting gray stitching, black carpet, and E-gear. Outside is the aforementioned reflective paint job, sitting on 20's. The whole package has done 1,060 miles, having been in magazines, on TV shows, and a YouTube traffic stop video...

According to the seller, the car has was also the subject of a huge stereo upgrade, but all traces of it have been hidden or removed. If you don't mind the shine factor -- the car doesn't scream for attention nearly as much as a yellow one would -- it's a remarkably decent looking package. And that makes us think something we never expected to be saying about Fifty: if it really is his car, we wish more rappers showed as much restraint with their rides.

On October 31st in Battersea Park, London, RM Auctions will be selling 50 cars from the private collection of Bernie Ecclestone at the Automobiles of London auction. What kind of cars does the notoriously particular F1 supremo collect: among the lot are a 1933 Marmon Sixteen Victoria Coupe, 1950 Ferrari 250 GT Europa Mk II (shown above), 1937 Mercedes 540 K Cabriolet B worth $7 million, 1933 Lancia Astura Roadster, and the obligatory 300 SL Gullwing. And because you just never know where Bernie's coming from, there's also a 1964 Ford Anglia.

The sale is expected to raise about 15 million pounds, which is the parking meter fund for a guy worth 3 billion pounds. According to his biographer, Ecclestone turns 77 in October, and perhaps "believes it's time to tidy up some of his private assets." Check out RM Auctions for more on the sale.

But best of all, it's going to have Bob Lutz <strike>offering</strike> auctioning a ride in his L-39 Albatross jet (which is actually a Czech jet, not German). And yes, your pilot will be Bob Lutz. Imagine the chance to find out what really happened to the Cadillac Sixteen and why China's Buicks are so cool while you pull 8 G's in an Immelman Turn at 466 mph and 16,000 feet. The auction is Saturday, but before you bid, a word of caution: if you win, we don't recommend bringing up CAFE standards while you're in the air. But please let us know what Bob's call sign is. Blue Devil? Maximus? Goose?

The rain and the champagne have been flowing at Goodwood, and so too have the pounds sterling, evidenced by Bonham's setting a sales record with $12.3 million worth of vintage metal sold. Top honors after six hours of bidding went to a 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C-2300 Spider, for which somebody parted with $2.8 million. Six other cars went for more than $440,000, including Lord Carnegie's 1954 Bentley R-Type Continental that fetched $509,000. In ample demonstration of the bidding fever, even a Leyland transporter went $124,000 -- no less than $100,000 above its estimated sale price. The fifteenth annual Bonham's auction is now in the record books as the fourth most valuable auction the UK has ever seen.

A high profile ejection of a respected collector car expert, rumors of shill bidding on company-owned muscle cars, and cars not getting their fair amount of stage time have all generated headlines from this year's biggest auction event, the Barrett-Jackson auction at Scottsdale, and those don't even address the biggest gripe most people seem to have - the seemingly insane high bids. For years people have commented on the super high prices muscle cars have been bringing at the Arizona auctions every January. Some have speculated that there might be something shady behind these gavel values, while others have simply been amazed.

We've vacillated over individual vehicles that don't seem to be "worth" six (or seven!) figures, but in the end understand that "worth" is determined by the buyer. At this year's auction we had a lot of fun getting caught up in the show and seeing some of our favorite vehicles throughout history, up close and in the flesh. It was a very exciting week of muscle cars, race cars, classics and customs, with a bit of drama thrown in for good measure. You might recall the story about Keith Martin, the editor of Sports Car Market, who was allegedly ejected from the Barrett-Jackson media center and the premises for his reported sleight of the proceedings and of company President, Craig Jackson. Not one to pass judgment or take sides, we decided to stay out of it. But this story seems to have legs. Follow the jump to find out why.

[Source: The Four Wheel Drift]
Continue reading Barrett-Jackson rumblings: Trouble in Westworld?

Barrett-Jackson rumblings: Trouble in Westworld? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 06 Feb 2007 12:32:00 EST. Gatti in London on April 24th. From there the 1911 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, Chassis No. 1574 was sold several times, including to Millard Newman in Florida, who had it meticulously restored and added to his collection. After Newman's death, the car's new owner put it through another extensive restoration, won several Concours awards, then brought it to Arizona where it was auctioned for $725,000, Friday. It was by far the best-preserved and most beautiful of three super rare Silver Ghosts auctioned at RM.

Make the jump to check out the two other Rollers that left the auction block.

Gallery: 2007 RM Auction, Scottsdale: 3 Rolls-Royce 40/50HP Silver Ghosts

Continue reading 2007 RM Auction, Scottsdale: 3 Rolls-Royce 40/50HP Silver Ghosts

2007 RM Auction, Scottsdale: 3 Rolls-Royce 40/50HP Silver Ghosts originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 20 Jan 2007 12:24:00 EST. We're always curious as to what those digital publishers are up to, so we downloaded a free copy (all issues of Winding Road are free to download, for those who don't know).

Winding Road: eBay Motors Edition differs from the standard mag in that it's aimed directly at those using eBay Motors to buy or sell a vehicle. Of course, it includes editorials from David E. Davis, Jr., as well as the spinoff's editor, Jim McCraw. We were particularly interested in the Future Classics section in which Winding Road staff gaze into the crystal ball and call out tomorrow's collectibles. This month's future stars are the just-arrived Shelby GT500 and the now-defunct Dodge Ram SRT-10. The Picks From eBay Motors section also includes vehicles the editors believe are a steal, and in this issue features GM's 1991-96 station wagons and the 1975-88 Volkswagen Scirocco.

If you're a Winding Road fan, you'll check out this new spinoff anyway, but if you've never taken the mag for a test drive, the eBay Motors Edition is a good place to start.
eBay Find of the Day - Winding Road: eBay Motors Edition originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 21 Sep 2006 16:27:00 EST.
After selling his very sweet MINI Mania-suped MINI Cooper S to the highest bidder for $33,800.00, Dale Jr. is in the process of unloading another of his magnificent stable inhabitants, a 2005 Corvette C6 with paint work of cherry red and flames and only 2,096 miles on the odometer. As a side note, he might want to start thinking about another venue besides eBay... the aftermarket upgrades alone probably cost close to the bidding price, minus the actual car. At any rate, the bidding is up close to $70K and Jr. has even offered to sign the hood, so pony up the cash (and save some to redo the paint if fire isn't your thing).

"Looking to upgrade his car collection," hmm? We're furiously scanning the tabloids for more information on the reason for Dale's fire sale, we'll keep you posted.
